it is only about 55 degrees. more on how cold it gets tonight. erika: thank you so much. arrests made in connection with the murder of an elderly man in orange. two suspects are behind bars this afternoon, taken into custody yesterday in virginia. newscenter 5's nicole estaphan is live in orange where she spoke with the son of the victim's wife. nicole? reporter: erika here's what we , know. police had both joshua hart and brittany smith in custody just a few days before the murder for stealing a car. before the murder. last week 95-year-old thomas harty found dead in his home, his 75-year-old wife joanna fisher seriously injured. police tell us, as far as they know, the two arrested, who are both from athol, have of no connection to the couple, though they do know east river road well. smith's grandmother lives here, in fact, the car they stole just a few days before the murder belonged to her. we spoke with joanna fisher's son, a retired state trooper. he says he is thankful for all

bush did issue an apology friday after the tape was released. erika: donald trump will be back in new hampshire this week. he will hold a rally on saturday in portsmouth. the event starts at noon. first lady michelle obama will be in new hampshire on thursday supporting hillary clinton and tim kaine. the event will happen in concord. full details have not been released yet. >> right now, the u.s. navy confirming two missiles were fired toward an american destroyer in the persian gulf. they were fired from territory held by shiite rebels in yemen. the missiles ld before getting near the u.s.s. mason. the launch comes after a united arab emirates ship was targeted several days ago from the same region. right now, a 9-year-old girl is recovering after she was shot on a boston playground. police say the gunmen were caught on surveillance cameras, but they have not been arrested. the shots were fired around 1:00 a.m. sunday on annunciation road in roxbury. police say there was a party in a nearby parking lot before gunfire broke out. that girl was taken to the

the public's help in finding those responsible. >> a hearing this week in the case of a young woman who prosecutors say convinced her boyfriend to kill himself. lawyers for michelle carter will argue that statements she made to police should be thrown out of her upcoming trial. it was in july that the sjc ruled the involuntary manslaughter case against carter will move forward. her trial is set to begin in december. 18-year-old conrad roy killed himself by filling his truck with carbon monoxide in 2014. five teens are dead following a wrong-way crash in vermont. police say steven burgoin was going the wrong way down i-89 outside burlington. they say he first hit a car around midnight, which burst into flames, killing all five teens inside. four of them were juniors in the same high school. police say burgoin then stole a police cruiser at the scene and caused a second crash. burgoin is in police custody in the hospital, where he is in critical condition. >> a large apartment fire is under investigation in bourne

announcer: you are watching newscenter 5 at noon. >> police in germany have detained a 22-year-old syrian man at the center of a nationwide manhunt. investigators now saying the man appears to have ties to the islamic state. he's believed to have been planning a bomb attack. the suspect had escaped police saturday during a raid of his apartment, where several hundred grams of volatile explosives were discovered. police say three fellow syrians recognized the man from the poster and turned him in. >> the suspect accused of killing two officers in palm

police say john felix will be arraigned tomorrow. investigators say he was heavily armed when he was arrested yesterday after a 12-hour standoff. they say felix shot the officers during a domestic disturbance call. officers jose vega and lesley zerenby were killed. hundreds attended a vigil last night honoring both victims. a third officer was hurt but is expected to recover. >> your economy this monday. samsung is halting production of their troubled galaxy note 7 smartphone. that's according to a south korean news agency. the move comes after reports that even the replacement devices of the phone have caught fire. the company would only say they're changing their output schedule to keep customers safe. gas prices continue to go up. analysts say the average price for a gallon of regular has risen four cents to $2.29 a gallon. the increase is being blamed on the rise in the cost of crude oil. over the last nine weeks, gas prices have gone up 13 cents. >> hurricane matthew is gone,

category one hurricane as we get to the middle of the week. it gets very close to bermuda wednesday night or thursday morning. it is going to curve through the north atlantic. it appears it does not pose a problem to the folks on the east coast. bermuda could be bracing for another storm. we will keep you posted. let's talk about matthew. the storm state to the south. some of that moisture -- we got sog that is the most we have seen this entire year from one storm in one day. the most since september of 2015. 3.5" is in nantucket. nearly three inches in north weymouth. very beneficial rainfall totals. that storm continues to pull away. high pressure is moving in.

i'm sure you have heard it or felt it. the wins didn't generate some clouds over the cape. does it since -- the winds did generate some clouds over the cape. it looks so nice out there. it is chilly. 54 degrees in boston, but the wind is active. out of the northwest at 17 miles it is dusting higher as it has all day long. 20 to 30 miles per hour. strongest winds along the cape. close to 40 in nantucket. this evening, 6:00 to 8:00 before the winds start to relax. this will allow the temperatures to go down. 55 on the north shore. we just hit 50 out in the

temperatures with mid-to-upper 50's. -- south of town, similar temperatures with mid-to-upper 50's. if you're headed to fenway, have a jacket with you. it will be about 55 for the first pitch. the sunsets at 6:09. the wind is gusting at 25 this evening. that will allow the temperatures to drop. frost advisory , cover up your plants. all of the county south of worcester under a freeze watch. temperatures in the low to mid 30's in most spots. on the coastline, 40's. city centers in the 40's as well. we have sunshine and lighter winds. temperatures shouldn't be over 60 degrees. mid 60's on wednesday. thursday is our next chance of seeing any rainfall.
