john atwater spoke with someone who worked alongside those two officers. john? reporter: well, for the first time, we are hearing from the captain of the east boston district here. you know, it's not very often we see police officers get emotional but this captain knows full well he could have easily lost two men last night. they are alive today, in large part, thanks to their fellow officers. >> so many other people stepped up. we want to make them. they've done the right thing by us. we have to do the right thing by them. >> you've got to be so proud. >> oh, yeah. god! ah... yeah. there's no words. no words for what these guys do every day, last night. so i just want to support them. get them back -- make their

good. reporter: the captain here just so thankful. they held a prayer vigil with the police commissioner and mayor. both richard cintolo and matt morris still in critical condition but the commissioner says they are expected to survive. certainly a relief to their families, the department and, of course, this neighborhood. >> john, thanks so much for that report. we want to get to the breaking details on the investigation of the shooting. newscenter 5's rhondla in east boston. reporter: it was major chaos out here, boston police going in under heavy fire to pull out two of their officers in the house and take down the gunman, wearing combat gear too. >> two officers, officer cintolo and officer morris, were hit. >> shots fired! i need every officer available! reporter: just before 11 last night, police at the door of 136 gladstone street are met by a

was being threatened with a knife by his roommate. a domestic dispute partly about the temperature. >> obviously he quickly displayed a rifle and without provocation, basically opened fire. >> i think we have an officer down! reporter: richard cintolo and matt morris are both critical, nothing less than a calvary of officers moved in to save them. >> this was a tell. i walked the scene, i saw the blastics evidence. i saw the blood, massive amounts of blood. >> multiple officers heading that way. >> this is dangerous work. i want to commend the men and women of the boston police department. reporter: police killed the gunman, 33-year-old kirk figueroa, who wore a ballistic vest. he's a city constable with an out of state criminal record. >> we told them they were very -- we were very proud of

of sympathy and prayers were for them. reporter: the commissioner calling the officers outstanding members of the department. in addition, nine officers had to be treated for stress. they are now home recuperating. live in boston, rhondella richardson, wcvb newscenter 5. >> the two officers wounded, richard cintolo and matt morris, have collectively nearly four decades of service in the boston police department. tonight a show of support for them and all of the boston p.d. officers out from residents as you can see. there's the commissioner on hand as well. shaun chaiyabhat is live at mass general with the effort to save the lives of those officers. shaun? reporter: steve, first 48 hours are crucial for both of those officers' recovery. they are stable, thanks in large part to the doctors and nurses here at mgs and those fellow officers on the scene. >> when one of the doctors was

very fortunate that the patron st. michael was looking down on these two officers. reporter: officers matt morris and richard cintolo, recovering. both were shot multiple times. sources say officer cintolo was shot as many as three or four times. somehow missing vital organs. morris, not as lucky but rescued by a fellow officer at the scene. >> officer morris was hit in one of his main arteries in hig. their hands as well as apply a tourniquet which doctors later say probably saved his life. reporter: that officer had just been trained days before how to use that lifesaving tourniquet. morris, alive and grateful. >> he clearly said to me, i want to thank this particular officer. he saved my life. so he knows how close he was to death. his father knew how close he was to death. reporter: commissioner evans and the mayor met with the officers

out of surgery and saved by blood transfusions. >> if it wasn't for the blood that both officers were given quickly last night, i don't think both officers would have survived. reporter: and so that is why boston police will pay it forward, planning a blood drive with the red cross. live at mass general, shaun chaiyabhat, wcvb newscenter 5. >> 5 investigates uncovering a maze of aliases and a troubled past for the suspect, killed in the firefight with pe. anderson with even more new details. karen? reporter: in the last few minutes, we found a sixth alias for kirk figueroa, a man seeming to have several identities involving music, religion. in an apparent obsession with police and security. one of the aliases apparently used by kirk figueroa is this one, coco. here's his facebook page where at 9:00 last night, he posted a video of michelle obama. an hour before, about his

a few hours later, the shoot-out at his apartment in east boston. just one of the many contradictions uncovered by 5 investigates. the man with the seeming obsession with law enforcement, one side of that this vehicle. with the look of an unmarked police cruiser that was towed from the scene. on the side, it says elite, the name of one of figueroa's security companies. yet he has had his own run-ins with the law, for arson the record kept him from obtaining a private investigator's license in florida. his work history, scattered, including a stint as a correction officer in west virginia in 2014. we found at least five aliases. some of them he disclosed in documents obtained by 5 investigates. under one alias, mohamed almadi, offering police protection jobs for people interested in joining him to hunt down fugitives and

he wrote about his rebirth as a baby into the nation of islam, after visiting an area of ethiopia and a mosque in south africa. figueroa is apparently rapping here. his most recent aliases shows a variety of posts, from beyonc? to a series about police shootings earlier this month. we know boston police are looking at some of this as they investigate figueroa and his past. the f.b.i. tells us they can't comment on the investigation. >> this is new at 7:00. tips from the public, helped boston police track down a sexual assault suspect. jose cepeda allegedly threw a woman to the ground and assaulted here in the park. dozens of tips came in and they led police to the arrest of the 32-year-old cepeda. he will be arraigned for assault and other charges. you can see it in this video

the attorney says his client was justified in the use of nondeadly force. sky 5 was over the scene when the chase ended in new hampshire. 32-year-old joseph flynn has pleaded not guilty to simple assault charges. his attorney says that flynn took action to prevent the suspects from fleeing. >> former speaker sal dimasi could be released from prison early as he fights cancer. federal prosecutors and the u.s. bureau of prisons have requested that his sentence be reduced to released immediately. dimasi was convicted in 2011 of concussion. he served almost five years of his eight-year sentence. a judge still has to approve this request. >> coming up, the ceremony today at logan airport for a sailor finally returning home. >> and a few showers around the south shore. how long that lastings. and which part of the weekend will be the mildest.

>> you're watching wcvb newscenter 5 at 7:00. >> new information about a fire in greenfield that killed four people. the state failure marshal says smoking materials were not throne away properly and there were no working smoke detectors. the fire killed a longtime massachusetts state employee, brian tower. their son and five-year-old grandson also died. >> state health officials have closed shellfish beds after dozens of people who ate raw shellfish got sick. this weekend is the oyster festival. there were reports of about 75 people with suspected norovirus in the past two days, mostly associated with eating raw shellfish at weddings or restaurants in the outer cape cod area. local businesses are recalling

reporter: and difficult for patients. carol says too often it's not highlighted. hence, her rally cry. stage iv needs more. >> we have different physical and emotional needs than early stage breast cancer patients. reporter: this thanksgiving, for a third year, carol has organized a charity turkey trot in wellesley to raise awareness and money. thousands attend. >> the funds go to metastatic breast cancer research. reporter: the community responding in al this natick is on the marathon route. checking it out one day, carol quickly befriended the owner. they specialize in home goods and art. but she 'ed fashion with compassion. this is the newly designated carol's corner. >> the proceeds from carol's corner go directly to dana farber breast cancer research. reporter: patrice goldman hunts for inventory. also, many have been moved to donate items.

you'll be able to see that what's left of this, around the cape cod canal, around chatham, then boom. it's offshore and the sky is clear. there's a little front coming through and the wind is starting to shift. we were 70 today. now we're 65 with that little shower. wind out of the west at 12 miles per hour. it's going from southwest, and in the process of shifting to the northwest. and look, the temperatures quickly fall into the 50's off to n here's the wind out of the northwest. 15 miles an hour in springfield. notice it's still southwest, plymouth and cape cod. front is moving east along with the showers and then the chilly air across the great lakes will simply flow in with high pressure. you've got a bright day coming up tomorrow but more typical fall type of feel to the air. starting out early, about mid- to upper 40's, boston. right around 40, worcester airport.

will feel even a little cooler than that. tomorrow, because of the chillier air mass, we're not going to be around 70. average high in the upper 50's. a few spots could touch 60 degrees. wind out of the north-northwest. it will switch to a light sea breeze in the afternoon. we've got a few photos in from bermuda. this is just scratching the surface. you do see trees that have been uprooted and downed in the bermuda over bermuda. now, it was packing category three type of winds. there was a report of a sustained wind at one time of 100 miles per hour with a gust to 128. that really peaked during the late morning. and it's pretty rare. only seven major hurricanes have come within 50 miles of bermuda since 1851 but only two, back in the 1920's, passed directly over bermuda. definitely some damage experienced there, although a
