emily: startling. cindy: 5:00 a.m. on a friday morning. that will wake you up. step outside this morning, and a little nip out there. it is breezy. that wind is really going to make a big difference this morning. the temperature is 48. we've had colder mornings. but that wind out of the north-northwest sustained at 14, it is gusting higher. look at that along the coastline. we're gusting over 20 miles per hour. so definitely making a difference out there this morning even though the temperatures don't look all that bad. we're running 50's north shore. low 40's in worcester county. mid 50's in the south shore, plymouth. the cape still running in the lower 50's. here's the deal. we've got clear skies, high pressure nosing in. so sunshine all day long, but this northerly wind is draining down cooler air. temperatures don't recover all that much. in fact, it's going to take until 9:00 a.m. to get you to 50 degrees, and we're still only in the lower 50's here at luncht lunchtime. upper 50's the best we do this

the merrimac valley. metrowest in the 50's. it's a bright beautiful day, but certainly cooler than what yesterday was all about. dress for it. now we want to get you to the roads. good morning, olessa. olessa: live look outside. here's a check of the expressway by the south bay mall. let's see the rest of your ride. problem-free as you travel int construction in the final stages on 128. pike is quiet. so is your trip north of town. so far trains and buses are starting the morning on schedule. that's a look at your traffic. >> there's no words, no words for what these guys do every day. emily: a lot of emotion from the boston police captain who realizes how close he came to losing two of his officers. a tremendous show of support

randy: that's where we find the eyeopener's sera congi this morning. sera, those officers are on the minds of so many this morning. sera: randy and emily, lots of prayers for the two officers as they remain in critical condition. meanwhile, the home here on gladstone street still cordoned off, the d.a. describing it as a crime scene complex as any. officers were saved wednesday night after a dramatic shootout with kirk figueroa, who was killed. captain kelley mccormick getting emotional as he talks about the quick action of other officers. >> we did everything within our capabilities to bring these guys home safe. when you shoot at officers, you're shooting at our community. whether it's my officer or one of my people who live here, it's the same thing.

sera: officer morris lost massive amounts of blood. both officers needed blood transfusions because of their injuries. they're right now in critical condition but improving. tonight there will be a vigil for the officers at 6:00 here on gladstone street in east boston. many are asked to wear blue in support of those officers. live in east boston, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: thank you. we now know why those officers were called to that home in east boston. a man called 9-1-1 s with a knife over a fight about the thermostat. sources say when officer richard cintolo arrived, he was shot as many as four times, but those bullets missed his vital organs. officer matthew morris wasn't as lucky. fellow officers applied a tourniquet. that probably saved his life. morris is grateful. >> he clearly said to me i want

so he knows how close he was to death. emily: the officer who applied the tourniquet had just been trained in how to use it days before. randy: 5:05. right now, two people are charged in the murder of an elderly man in orange. they're just hours away from facing a judge on these charges. the eye's antoinette antonio is in orange this morning to set the stage. antoinette: randy, those two suspects are expected to be arraigned later on this morning. and we're expecting t more about this case that's being described by investigators as a random attack. brittany smith and joshua hart were returned to massachusetts on wednesday. they were arrested last week states away in virginia. they are charged in the murder of 91-year-old thoms harty in his home in orange. his 77-year-old wife was seriously injured and still in the hospital. the day before the murder, smith and hart had been arrested for stealing her grandmother's car,

again, still a lot of questions about this case this morning, including the motive for the home invasion as well as the murder. we, of course, will stay on top of the situation and will be at today's arraignment later on this morning. live in orange, antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: the young woman accused of convincing her boyfriend to kill himself will be in court today. the lawyer for michelle carter will argue that statements she made to police out of her upcoming trial. in july, the supreme judicial court of the common law ruled the involuntary manslaughter case against carter will move forward. 18-year-old conrad roy killed himself by filling his truck with carbon monoxide gas in 2014. emily: commitment 2016. new numbers painting a picture of what could be an uphill battle for donald trump even as he lashes out at sex assault allegations. the eyeopener's erika tarantal

erika? erika: we're focusing on the battleground states, states that could go to either candidate. a new poll gives hillary clinton a six-point lead over donald trump. it was done both before and after the "access hollywood" video and the second debate. and a public policy polling survey done only after both events gives clinton and 11-point lead in the granite state. we should point out that poll was done for a democratic-leaning group. trump told a group in ohio the >> including giving the questions and answers to hillary clinton before a debate. i don't get them. i want them. i'm angry at the republicans. they don't get me the answers and the questions. erika: trump also called the growing number of allegations of sexual assault against him a coordinated attack between the media and the clinton campaign. clinton responded to the accusations for the first time

kind of campaign that the other side has run is by defeating my opponent and what he stands for. erika: clinton will appear today on the ellen degeneres show. trump will be in north carolina today before heading to new hampshire tomorrow. emily? emily: thanks. clinton, meanwhile, has submitted written answers about her private email se judicial watch filed a freedom of information watch. clinton responded 20 times that she couldn't recall information. she also claims no one ever told her that keeping a private server was legally questionable. now, the candidates are gearing up for their final debate before the presidential election. that is wednesday in las vegas. and i will be there. i'll have pre and post debate coverage. randy: a warning to those enrolled in the massachusetts

confusion during next month's open enrollment. and they say it's due to premium hikes and changes in eligibility. they're warning over 230,000 members to check their status and to shop around for better premium options. the board also says the connector placed thousands of people on mass health in 2013 without properly checking their status. many of us are wasting money at the grocery store. emily: the tricks that have you paying and these dogs here are safe after being trapped 60 feet under ground. what went wrong and how rescuers finally freed them. randy: what do you see in this video here? the unsettling theory causing a scare in michigan. emily: two boston police officers are still in critical condition after being shot wednesday night. officers richard cintolo and matthew morris were responding to a call in east boston when it happened.

it's all over the place with temperatures. they're going back down today. emily: but then we're going back up? cindy: we are! that's what happens. yesterday 72 degrees in boston. it was very mild for this time of the year, 10 degrees above average. that is not happening today. our air is coming right out of canada today. it's only about 30 in ottawa. you can see that colder air is working on in, so it's definitely going to be a cooler one morning. high pressure, though, building in, so as that happens, the winds are going to relax, and look how clear the skies are. just a few clouds here offshore. we're in great shape today. it's going to be a bright, beautiful day but a little chilly this morning and a little deceptive. you look at these temperatures. they're running mostly in the low to mid 40's. we've had much colder mornings this week, but the wind is making it feel chillier. 45 in beverly. 42 in worcester. even orange in the lower 40's. boston 48. plymouth 47. and still a couple 50's hanging

along the coastline. wind speeds about 10 to 15, even close to 20 miles per hour this morning. they will settle back as we get toward lunchtime, and there will be less wind this afternoon and notice sunshine pretty much all day long. it's a nice looking friday. just a lot colder than yesterday. 72. only 58 in boston. 56 worcester. still hanging in the mid 50's on cape cod. we may nudge toward 60 briefly toward metrowest and the merrimac valley. clear skies today. this evening winds. temperatures really drop tonight. just a heads-up. we've got a freeze warning now basically just outside of boston all the way back to 495 and right along the immediate coastline, it's a frost advisory. temperatures near or below freezing, and that could, you know, do some damage to plants. it could be a killing frost and freeze for many areas. keep that in mind. not the case in worcester county because the growing season has technically ended there.

lower 40's and close to 40 on cape cod. high pressure drops southward on sunday and a milder southwesterly wind takes hold. so of the two weekend days, saturday looks warmer. and this -- colder, rather, and this front off to the west is going to bring in showers as we head toward sunday night and monday. let me break things down saturday into sunday. saturday, your chillier day, and then look at sunday. mid to upper 60's, could even be close to 70. should get there on monday and a couple of mild days early nex right now. how are we looking, olessa? olessa: quiet. zakim bridge, leverett connector, no problems in both connections southbound heading toward the bottom of the screen. let's go to the maps and see the rest of your ride. traveling into town, construction picked up nice and early on the expressway near the o'neill tunnel. no more issues on route 3, 24, 95 nice and light as well. and we did have road work on 128 by great plain avenue. that project picked up early also. traveling north you're in good shape. so far trains and buses starting

two dogs rescued more than 60 feet underground. it started around 10:00 yesterday morning after winston and rosie somehow got stuck down a pipe. that pipe, 150 feet long, 12 inches wide. the rescue required a backhoe, police and fire and two different public works crews and six hours working on it. >> they were pretty excited about getting out of there. i'm sure they were a little thirsty as well. >> dogs are fine. dogs are in good health. well taken care of. very lucky. i'm glad it's over. randy: both dogs doing fine this morning. their owner says first thing on today's to-do list, clean up that backyard. emily: your economy this friday morning, asian shares were higher overnight including thai stocks which surged following an ease in uncertainty after the

olessa: yes, yes. this has many thinking they're looking at a ghost ship. take a look at yourself. the ghost ship was captured by a michigan videographer. he said it bobbed in the water for close to 30 minutes. experts say it's likely a lighthouse off the coast. and terrifying video in from mexico. a shark bursting out of a diver's cage with the diver inside. that great white was biting and lunged to get out. the diver got out and swam to the surface uninjured as the great white took off. the crew says they're lucky it's not a tragic adventure. does this look like a good time to you? randy: he was breathing a sigh of relief. emily: a gorilla escaped its

shower. the continued slide to unimagined depths is yet another blow to the ideal of participatory democracy. the next president will face daunting, unsolved issues that cannot be ignored. at the last debate they were ignored. on the list, liar, misogynist, email breaching and sex tape. while we support the i presidential debates, perhaps it is time to rethink how to best serve their most important audience, voters. moderators, no matter how well intentioned, seem powerless to steer discussions to substantive issues and away from streams of personal attacks that most viewers find more rebelant than informative. no question, this current campaign and these debates will constitute a new low. but if we can tweak and reform some parts of the voting process to bolster turnout, we can do

overnight construction picked up early. heading into boston in good shape. making your way south, route 3 nice and light out of weymouth. 24 from brockton. no delays along the pike or 128. 93 south also looking great. no issues on route 3. trains and buses on schedule. randy: right now we're getting some new details about the man accused of starting a fight -- firefight inside a boston -- east boston home. that gun two police officers. emily: sera congi is live with what we've learned this morning. sera: the mother of kirk figueroa tells the boston herald herald she spoke with her son just moments before the gunfire erupted here. yvonne figueroa saying he rushed off the phone with an abrupt "gotta go." 5 investigates found kirk figueroa had multiple aliases

companies in florida and other states that were focused on security and protection. figueroa also wrote about his rebirth into the nation of islam after visiting ethiopia and a mosque in south africa. he was a sworn constable in boston. kevin leary has held that job for 37 years and tells us that figueroa's self-published biography could have raised some red flags. >> where this gentleman seems to have had a lot of various jobs in a quasi e manner, that maybe he should have been looked at a little bit deeper. sera: the background check to become a constable does not include the f.b.i. database. police did not know about figueroa's run-ins with the law in georgia and arizona. the motive for the shooting at this point remains unclear. the two officers who were shot remain in critical condition. live in east boston this

randy: good morning. the eyeopener team ready with news to go on this friday morning. we're in east boston and orange. erika has new poll numbers. emily: first, hurricane nicole leaving a path of destruction in bermuda. that category three storm pummelling the small island with winds up to 115 miles per hour yesterday. peeling off roofs, ripping up trees, the storm has since spun off into the ocean, but we could feel the effects. cindy: that was the strongest hurricane to impact bermuda since fabian. randy: could be a mess. hopefully not a lot of serious injuries. cindy: we're still getting word. 90% of bermuda was without power. quite a storm. it's moving away. it's a category one hurricane at this point. look at the track. you can see it moving into the north atlantic so moving away from you. goodbye to nicole. we're saying hello to big temperature changes. yesterday we were 72 in boston. look at today.

upper 50's to near 60. by sunday and early next week, temperatures trending way up with milder temperatures returning. air is flowing out of canada on the back side of a frontal boundary that did turn into a few showers late yesterday. high pressure will be settling in. we're in for a sunny stretch right through the weekend. just a little chilly the next couple of days. right now the skies are clear. temperatures have fallen back mossly into the 40's. 48 boston. a couple of 50' sustained 10 to 15, gusting higher near the coast. it's feeling chilly this morning. by 9:00 a.m., we're up to 50 degrees. sun up at 6:56. lunchtime, low to mid 50's. we'll hold in the 50's to near 60. that's it for your friday. a much cooler day overall. tonight, a freeze warning up away from the coastline back to 495 and it's a frost advisory along the coastline. temperatures near or below

it will be on today at 3:00. emily? emily: thank you. the candidates gearing up for their final debate before the presidential election. that is wednesday in las vegas. and i'll be there. i'll have live reports following the debate on newscenter 5. a new hampshire town on alert this morning as police search for the gunman in a shooting earlier this week. police say jason cuocolo shot a belmont woman in the head tuesday. she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. police dangerous. they've received several reported sights but none have panned out. police say that shooting was not random. randy: the suspect in an alleged mission hills sexual assault in boston is due in cord. -- in court. jose cepeda is accused of assaulting a woman near fitzgerald park. dozens of tips have come in and they led police to arrest the 32

emily: a dump truck tipped over. people were trapped in their cars and had to be pulled out by firefighters. york police say none of the injuries are life-threatening. randy: the worcester regional airport is set to receive over $7 million from the government to aid in taxiway construction. that money will be used to grow the facility and increase its capacity. the multi-million-dollar grants from the faa. this latest grant was awarded to the u.s. department of trans. emily: sal dimasi could be released early. the 71-year-old dimasi is battling cancer. he was convicted in 2011 of corruption. he served almost five years of his eight-year sentence. a judge still has to approve that request.

sunshine the next several days. a really nice stretch on the way. clear skies this morning. a few clouds offshore. we're holding in the low 50's from hyannis to nantucket. otherwise, 40's out there right now. 42 worcester. 48 in boston. and we are going to see those temperatures come up only in the low to mid 50's by noontime. less wind by lunchtime. during the afternoon, it's sunny and cooler than yesterday. 72. only about 58 in town today. a few of our suburbs north and west of town could make a run toward 60. here back to 495. frost advisory at the coast. temperatures going to be near or even below freezing tonight although in town i think we do hold in the lower 40's. high pressure gives us sunshine all weekend. we'll get into a southwesterly wind which is milder on sunday. this front brings in our next chance for showers. that doesn't come in until sunday night and monday. a good-looking weekend. saturday is the cooler day. lots of sunshine. sunday, look at that.
