this is wcvb newscenter 5 avenue. erika: we begin with breaking news about the two police officers shot in east boston both officers are having more surgery. the veteran officers were critically injured late wednesday night when they were responding to a domestic incident newscenter 5's sera congi is live at the still-active scene. sera: police commissioner william evans visited the two officers at mass general this morning. at the time, one was undergoing

they are listed in critical, but stable condition. forensic evidence still at the scene of what was described as a ferocious firefight, the home on gladstone street in east boston still cordoned off, a crime scene the district attorney says is as complex as any in recent memory. last night, the mayor and police commissioner joined the east boston community in prayer, to support officers richard cintolo and matthew morris, both critically injured by gunfire when responding to a domestic disturbance call wednesday night. kirk figueroa opened fire, he was killed in the shootout. >> when you're shooting at officers, you're shooting at our community. sera: captain kelley mccormick became emotional when talking about how his officers faced gunfire to drag the wounded men to safety and took quick action to stop the blood loss. >> everyone did everything within their capabilities to bring these guys home safe. sera: there is still some police

now, two suspects are about to be arraigned in the death of an elderly man. antoinette antonio is learning more about this case, described as a random attack. antoinette: i am told that everyone was asked to leave the courtroom for a security sweep. an interesting development. it was packed with family members of the victims and the suspects. obviously, emotions running high as the accused in this murder are arranged. i believe that is happening right now. they were brought back to massachusetts from virginia, where they were arrested earlier this week. the parents -- charged with the murder of thomas hardy and his 77-year-old wife was seriously injured.

right now and elderly man is fighting for his life, after falling down the jagged rocks of newport's cliff walk. it happened around 12:30 it's not clear how. thursday. crews strapped the man to a stretcher and slowly hauled him up. he was airlifted to rhode island hospital with serious injuries, but was alert and talking during the rescue. we turn now to her weather. a live look over boston as we get ready to start the weekend. and tonight, you might need to have are the plants, but otherwise eo with clear skies. even close to the coast line there could be frost tonight. once you get inland back to 495, it is a freeze warning. earlier in the week, we had a hard freeze. still, if you have any plans, this may be the last night for them unless you take for cautions. pretty close to average.

new life. 13 month old jadon and anias mcdonald from illinois were born attached at the head. they were separated this morning at montefiore medical center in the bronx in a 17-hour procedure. baby jadon is in recovery, his brother is still in surgery. the boys are the 59th pair to ever undergo this kind of surgery. terrifying video from mexico a -- for mexico. a shark bursting out of a diver's cage with the diver chunks of bait when it got stuck in the cage and lunged to get out. the diver managed to get outside of the cage when the shark entered and swam to the surface uninjured as the great white took off. the crew says they're lucky this wasn't a tragic adventure. cindy: hmm. out of a"jaws" movie.'erika: scary stuff. cindy: we have had some

saturday, chili, frost around. erika: and next week looks warm, 20. thank you for joining us. >> this is an editorial by wcvb channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. mr. fine: with two presidential debates now in the books, and less than a month remaining to election day, it's time to take stock of what america has seen and heard. or, more to the point, not heard. there are no points awarded for sheer originality, as this race has charted new destructive territory. mudslinging seems like such a quaint and anachronistic term for the negative campaigning in 2016. sadly, such originality makes many voters want to take a shower, rather than becoming enlightened and inspired by these debates. the continued slide to unimagined depths is yet another blow to the ideal of participatory democracy. the next president will face some daunting, unsolved issues that cannot be ignored.

were ignored. the topics never mentioned -- climate change, education, income gap, gun violence, infrastructure. on the list? liar, misogynist, email bleaching, and sex tape. while we obviously support the institution of nationally-televised presidential debates, perhaps it's time to rethink how to best serve their most important audience -- voters. moderators, no matter how well-intentioned, often seem powerless to steer discussion to substantive issues, and away from streams of personal attacks that most viewers find more no question -- this current campaign and these debates will constitute a new low. but if we can tweak and reform some parts of the voting process to bolster turn-out, we can do the same with debates, where the goal remains to better inform and frame a choice, and to make
