s.u.v. crashed into arlington's spy pond. doug: newscenter 5's john atwater caught up with the rescuer in newton. >> she was very, very scared and had taken in water. she knew she was dying. she figured this is it. i saw that in her eyes. john: dan frazier knew he only had moments to act. he and two others jumped in the water trapped in her sinking car. >> i saw a woman in a car going down. and somebody had to help save her. john: the first man out manages to open the backdoor, but the car sinks rapidly. it's 40 feet deep where it's going down. at one point they fear the worst. >> i lost her. i lost her. >> is there just one person in there? behind you. john: just then, the 68-year-old woman emerges.

>> and i could just see her with this frantic look in her eyes. john: that woman's husband says she confused the brake and gas pedals, jumping a curb and plunging into the water. he and his friend were riding by spy pond. >> i got down and prayed with her, prayed thanks for the rescue. >> she was very thankful, as you can imagine. john: i did speak with that woman's husb he says she is doing much better. she is expected home from the hospital later today. john atwater, wcvb newscenter 5. antoinette: the convicted sex offender whose release sparked outrage has been arrested again. richard gardner moved back to weymouth last week after serving 30 years for kidnapping and raping several young boys in the late 1980's. neighbors feared he would offend again. he moved to a shelter in boston where he was arrested last night on a fugitive from justice

island. we're told gardner is due in a boston courtroom on monday. doug: school counselors will be available this morning at boston leadership academy after a student was killed in a crash. this happened in hyde park on american legion highway yesterday afternoon. the student's name has not been released. counselors will be available on monday. the crash remains under investigation. antoinette: a walk for peace in east boston, the community turning out to support two wounded police officers and each other. those officers are recovering responding to a domestic call wednesday night. newscenter 5's nichole berlie reports from the peace walk. nichole: a gathering of the community. >> you have brought the city of boston together. nichole: just feet from where two boston police officers were shot wednesday night. >> what happened here is devastating, especially for the people that we trust to protect us. who was there to protect them? nichole: this woman here with her 2-year-old son, her husband,

>> they put their lives at risk. we're here for them and all the other officers. nichole: candles lit not only by people from boston but all over the city. >> i care about the community. i care about east boston in particular. i care about the boston police department. >> when people get in trouble, they call the police. and they're there for us. so we've got to be there for them. nichole: the gathering has a special meaning for tom, whose brother, robert, was killed in the line of duty in 2005. >>s and these are candles from my brother's memorial. i feel i have a connection with this people. i know what they've been through in the way of not knowing if their loved one is alive or dead. nichole: show support and makes sure every officer goes home at the end of their shift. >> our father who art in heaven. >> the community rallied against the officers and showing we're united, not only united, but united city goes a long way.

nichole: commissioner evans says he was able to visit both officers richard cintolo and matthew morris friday. as of friday, they were both listed in critical, but stable condition. in east boston, nichole berlie, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: all right, nicole, thank you. the investigation into wednesday night's shooting continues. boston police removed at least eight bags of evidence from the home on gladstone street. and even show the shooter is already dead, prosecutors say more criminal charges may be filed. congresswoman, gabrielle giffords, in boston to urge voters to support more gun control. giffords is on a multi-state tour. she became a gun advocate five years ago after she was shot and nearly killed at a political event in phoenix. she said that experience caused her to look at gun-related violence in a different way. >> stopping gun violence takes courage, the courage to do what's right, the courage of new

life as on the line. antoinette: giffords is calling on people to vote for candidates who support an assault weapons ban and other gun control measures. doug: this one's a biggie. if you own a samsung galaxy note 7 phone, guess what? it is now banned from all airline flights in the u.s. the ban follows nearly 100 cases of note 7's catching on fire. samsung is no longer manufacturing the phone. now they are deemed too dangerous to take onboard a plane. passengers trying to bring note 7's onboard a flight may be forced to give their phones up to security or face fines. >> banning these phones is probably a good step if they are such an extraordinary risk. but flight attendants will not be able to enforce that. doug: some airlines are being stocked with special fire containment bags that can be used to smother phones and other devices that catch fire. that new ban takes effect at noon today. so if you have a flight and you have one of those phones,

"the globe" reporting the administration plans to launch a by-out program for executive branch employees. layoffs could follow depending on how many people take that deal. smoke them if you've got them. the white house easing up on restrictions on some of cuba's most famous exports. starting monday, travelers to cuba can bring home normal cigars for personal use. that means most travelers will be able to bring back at many as 100 cigars and several bottles of rum. aaaargh. you still won't be able to order online. antoinette: all right. take a look at this shot of the full moon behind all north church.

but got some frost on the windshield this morning. stanley sent this picture in up in beverly. you can see that. nice coating on the class. you either need to find your ice scraper if you're heading out or let that car warm up and the defroster go to work. it's 36 in beverly. nashua 30 degrees. notice how we're hanging on to the low 40's in town right now. upper 30's in worcester and lots of 20's keene, orange, jaffrey, norwood, 30 in taunton and a lot of 30's south coast, plymouth ou t vineyard. it was 30 last hour on the vineyard. now sitting at 33. we have the chilly air in the northeast. i want you to look off to the west. 50's in chicago right now. there are 60's on the map as well. these are the current temperatures. so a much milder flow of air here out in the middle of the country, and southwesterly winds are going to bring that in as we get into the day tomorrow. but day high pressure overhead, so it's a chilly start to the day, and we're going to have a beautiful blue sky today. you can see the absence of cloud cover. it's going to be cool.

mid 40's on average, mid 50's at lunchtime. and as you're out and about this afternoon, notice all the sunshine. but the temperatures don't climb all that much. average high this time of year is 62. only about 57 or so in boston. we may get close to 60 through the merrimack valley, metrowest, 61 in taunton this afternoon. not going to be nearly as cold tonight. winds will turn around to the south. we'll see temperatures mostly in the 40's. our coldest suburbs in the upper 30's. so i'm not worried about the frost tonight. and tomorrow, yeah, we are going to make that degrees. we could get there in boston. some lower 70's possible up in the merrimack valley. it's a southwesterly wind bringing in the warmth tomorrow. south coast and cape holding in the low to mid 60's. a great day to be down at gillette for the patriots game. sunshine, warm temperatures. kickoff 67. we'll probably nudge close to 70 during the game. this front here starved for moisture, but it does drop in on

flights. this ban follows nearly 100 cases of the note 7's catching fire. passengers who attempt to take them onto flights may be forced to give the phones up to security, or they could face fines. doug: right now, a 22-year-old woman is behind bars after a sudden and bizarre end to a kidnapping case. abigail hanna changed her plea to guilty in the snatching and abandoning of a 2-year-old girl. newscenter 5's diane cho was in salem when that sentence was handed down. reporter: abigail hanna tearfully apologizing in court today after pleading guilty to several charges including kidnapping. >> did the mental illness interfere with your ability to understand the nature of the proceedings?

she kidnapped a then 2-year-old girl she used to babysit. >> nine days before the kidnapping, she searched the internet for various child kidnapping cases, the legal definition of kidnapping and how to find the kidnapper. reporter: the child was find alive last november on the side of the road naked, her head shaved with circular shaved burn marks on her body and abrasions on her forehead. >> her presentation and her softness does not excuse the horror she inflicted on the family and the horror that she inflicted on this family isn't abated just because the child was found. it really does maintain in large measure until this day. reporter: hanna's attorney says she believes strongly if mental health were not a significant portion of this case, hanna would not find herself in the position she's in. >> that being said, judge, i am not suggesting that the case conforms truly to a not guilty. by reason of insanity. reporter: there were several conditions placed on her probation including she stays

and her family. in salem, diane cho, wcvb newscenter 5. antoinette: disturbing new details in the deadly home invasion in orange that investigators say was a random attack. joshua hart and brittany smith forced their way into the home of thomas harty and joanne fisher last week, stabbing the 95-year-old man to death. they also allegedly tried to suffocate fisher with a pillow. prosecutors say the two suspects wanted to steal the elderly couple's car. >> they saw that there were and their intention was to go in and rob those people, take money and take that car. and they armed themselves before they entered. >>. antoinette: prosecutors say it was heart who murdered hearty and tried to help kill fisher. doug: donald trump is headed to portsmouth, new hampshire, today with new accusations plaguing

antoinette: hillary clinton meanwhile is fending off more allegations after wikileaks dumbed another load of hacked emails. they show clinton's aides asking former president bill clinton to cancel a planned speech to a wall street investment firms because of the concerns the clintons may appear too cozy with wall street. the speech was eventually canceled. the final debate is wednesday in las vegas. our very own emily riemer will be there with pre and post debate coverage right here on newscenter 5. doug: a worcester man is on probation after pleading guilty to spiking a woman's drink. daniel szklarz faced his victim in court, telling the judge the drug almost killed her. she and her husband were attending a fundraiser with szklarz.

everywhere. >> i'm here because i know there are other women like me who did not or could not speak up. the hospital couldn't tell me what was put in my drink, but i do know what it did to me. it made me black out, essentially pass out, stop breathing. doug: prosecutors asked for the maximum 2 1/2 years behind bars for assault and battery, but the judge imposed the minimum sentence of one year probation. antoinette: new details after a major mistake at a worcester hospital. a kidney removed from the g investigators say this past july, a surgeon at st. vincent hospital was supposed to remove a diseased kidney from a patient. the surgeon did not confirm the patient's identity and instead took a healthy kidney out of another patient who had the same name. the two patients had different date of births. investigators say the hospital should have noticed that. st. vincent says it is taking steps to prevent similar mistakes. doug: right now, police are

the suspect caught on camera. you can see him here in an alley wearing a cap and shooeded sweatshirt allegedly casing a home in cleveland, ohio. police say he then snatched a 6-year-old girl from her bedroom in the middle of the night, attacking her and dropping her off 17 hours later in a different neighborhood. her parents demanding justice. >> he just walks in there, unknowing about anything, and is willing to take someone's kid. doug: that same suspect, police say, broke in through a window and tried to kidnap a 10-year-old girl from her bedroom several months earlier. she was able to fight him off and called for her father, but that suspect got away. 6:40 right now. some encouraging news in your health this morning. antoinette: fewer americans are dying of breast cancer. one reason for the decline in the death rate. doug: the patriots are gearing up for tom brady's first game back at gillette stadium. and fans are putting a dent in their wallets to see the action.

>> 6:43. your health this morning. new research finds fewer americans are dying of breast cancer. from 2010 to 2014, approximately 41,000 people died from breast cancer each year. that is a drop, but the decline 4% greater for white women to black women. researchers say the drop could be because there are better treatments. breast cancer is the second-most deadly cancer for all women right after lung cancer. doug: a great story this morning. a rare and complicated operation to separate twin brothers conjoined at the head is a success. the two from illinois are now living apart for the first time. surgery started thursday morning at montefiore medical center in the bronx and ended yesterday afternoon.

boston. we may sneak into the lower 70's metrowest up in the merrimack valley with low to mid 60's on cape cod. great day to head to gillette for kickoff. 67 degrees. may get close to 70 during the day. very mild. mostly sunny skies. we'll start to notice a few high clouds toward evening. this frontal boundary is going to be dropping through on sunday night. that is our next chance of seeing just a couple of showers. that's all they're going to be. there's very limited moisture with this front. as it drops southward, one or o thing monday morning. then the clouds drop south. brightening skies monday afternoon. look at the temperature on monday. 74. what? 80 degrees on tuesday? yeah, very warm. in fact, near record warmth for this time of year. record is 82 in boston from 1947. so the jet stream bringing in unseasonably warm temperatures, and they are hanging on through the middle of the week, slowly we trend down with some wet weather likely moving in as we head toward thursday and friday. so enjoy the weekend.

doug: welcome back. this is an amazing story. one of the men who dove into a pond to save a crash victim is telling his story. dan frazier only had moments to react. he and two others jumped into that cold water to save a woman trapped in her sinking car. once she surfaced, he swam over and grabbed her. i antoinette: just amazing. the convicted sex offender whose release sparked outrage has been arrested again. richard gardner was taken into custody on a fugitive from justice charge out of rhode island. gardner moved back to weymouth last week after he served 30 years for kidnapping and raping several young boys in the late 1980's. doug: a walk for peace in east boston after the shooting of two police officers. more than 100 people joined the walk through the neighborhood where those shots were fired wednesday night. the two officers had been
