do not be fooled by that picture of the sun. antoinette: i know, right? it looks warm. like you might want to be on that beach. doug: cindy, help us. cindy: we got down to 42 in boston, coldest morning since may 16. we're in the process of recovering now and warming things up. look how much colder it was in the suburbs. bedford got down to 29. norwood 26. lots of 20's through worcester county. taunton in the 20's. even 29 on the ne frost advisory and freeze warning, but the temperature recovery has begun. you can see how clear the sky is now. we're going to have sunshine all day long. temperatures sneaking out of the 30's onto the lower 40's. it's now 44 in boston. high pressure means sunshine all day long, and off to the west, there's some milder air that's going to work on in. so we really warm things up tomorrow. i think 50 is the best we do this afternoon. could get close to 60 in a few

temperatures on your seven-day forecast. doug and antoinette? antoinette: thank you. a hero comes forward. right now, one of the men who dove right into this pond to save a crash victim is telling his story. he's among a group of bystanders who jumped right into action when that s.u.v. crashed into arlington's spy pond. doug: john atwater caught up with the rescuer. >> she was very, very scared and had taken in water. she knew she was dying.sh john: dan frazier knew he only had moments to act. he and two others jumped in the water to save the woman trapped in her sinking car. >> i saw a woman in a car going down. and somebody had to help save her. >> come on. john: the first man out manages to open the backdoor, but the car sinks rapidly. it's 40 feet deep where it's going down. at one point they fear the

i lost her. >> is there just one person in there? >> behind you. john: just then, the 68-year-old woman emerges. dan swims out to save her. >> and i could just see her with this frantic look in her eyes. john: that woman's husband says she confused the brake and gas pedals, jumping a curb and plunging into the water. he and his friend were riding by on their thankful they stopped and so grateful to have saved her life. >> i got down and prayed with her, prayed thanks for the rescue. >> she was very thankful, as you can imagine. john: i did speak with that woman's husband. he says she is doing much better. she is expected home from the hospital later today. john atwater, wcvb newscenter 5. antoinette: the convicted sex offender whose release sparked outrage has been arrested again. richard gardner moved back to

raping several young boys in the late 1980's. neighbors feared he would offend again. he moved to a shelter in boston where he was arrested last night on a fugitive from justice charge coming out of rhode island. we're told gardner is due in a boston courtroom on monday. doug: school counselors will be available this morning at boston community leadership academy after a student was killed in a car crash. it happened in hyde park on american legion highway yesterday afternoon. the student's me released. counselors will be available on monday. the crash remains under investigation. antoinette: a walk for peace in east boston, the community turning out to support two wounded police officers and each other. those officers are recovering after they were shot while responding to a domestic call wednesday night. newscenter 5's nichole berlie reports from the peace walk. nichole: a gathering of the community. >> you have brought this community in east boston, the

two boston police officers were shot wednesday night. >> what happened here is devastating, you know, especially for people that we truss to protect us. who was there to protect them? nichole: this woman here with her 2-year-old son, her husband, a boston police officer. >> they put their lives at risk. we're here for them and all the other officers. nichole: candles lit not only by people from east boston but all over the city. >> i care about the community. i care about east boston in particular. i care about the boston police pa >> when people get in trouble, they call the police. and they're there for us. so we've got to be there for them. nichole: the gathering has a special meaning for tom, whose brother, robert, was killed in the line of duty in 2005. >> this is my brother's jacket. and these are candles from my brother's memorial. i just feel i have a connection with these people because i know what they've been through in the way of not knowing if their loved one's alive or dead.

to show support and make sure every officer goes home at the end of their shift. >> the community rallied against the officers and showing we're united, not only united, but united city goes a long way. sending a message of peace. nichole: commissioner evans says he was able to visit both officers richard cintolo and matt morris friday. as of friday, they were both listed in critical, but stable condition. in east boston, nichole berlie, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: all right, nicole, thank you. the investigation into wednesday night's shooting continues. boston police removed at least eight bags of evidence from the home on gladstone street. and even show the shooter is already dead, prosecutors say more criminal charges may be filed. antoinette: former congresswoman, gabrielle giffords, in boston to urge voters to support more gun control. giffords is on a multi-state tour. she became a gun control advocate five years ago after

she said that experience caused her to look at gun-related violence in a different way. >> stopping gun violence takes courage, the courage to do what's right, the courage of new ideas. i've seen great courage when my life as on the line. antoinette: giffords is calling on people to vote for candidates who support an assault weapons ban and other gun control measures. doug: this one's a biggie. if you own a samsung galaxy note 7 phone, guess what? bring it on any u.s. airlines flights. the ban follows nearly 100 cases of note 7's catching fire. samsung is no longer manufacturing the phone. now they are deemed too dangerous to take onboard a plane. passengers trying to bring note 7's onboard a flight may be forced to give their phones up to security or face fines. >> banning these phones is probably a good step if they are such an extraordinary risk.

doug: welcome back. 8:12 on this saturday morning. checking your economy -- governor charlie baker is expecting a nearly $300 million state budget gap that could lead "the globe" reporting the administration plans to launch a buy-out program for executive branch employees. layoffs could follow depending on how many people take the deal. smoke 'em if you got 'em. the white house easing up on restrictions on some of cuba's most famous exports. starting monday, travelers to cuba can bring home normal import amounts of cuban rum and cigars for personal use. antoinette: party time? doug: yeah, that's what i'm talking about.

the past two weekends, we had rain which we need. we're not complaining about that. but like perfect fall weather this weekend. if you were up early this morning, really early this morning, look at this. antoinette: wow! cindy: that looks amazing! this is the full, almost, harvest -- hunter's moon there over the old north church in boston. it was setting which is why it looks so big when this is the full hunter's moon. it will be full just after midnight as it comes up after 6:00 p.m. sometimes it's the harvest moon. it's always closest to the equinox. that was in september. a freeze warning inland till 9:00 a.m. low temperatures have already occurred. this is close to average when we typically see our first freeze at least out toward 495.

15th. it's usually into november before it happens in boston. we did hold in the low 40's in boston overnight. look at the 20's. bedford to norwood. not of 20's, orange, jaffrey, keene. we had reading below the freezing mark. taunton and on the vineyard, so a really cold start. the sun up. it is going to go to work and warm things north. the air is dry with dew points in the 30's. we will keep climbing this afternoon. you can see it's 40 in worcester. we still have mid 30's in fitchburg, 39 in marshfield. on the cape, hyannis up to 41 right now. i think we're going to hold in the mid 50's on cape cod despite all the sunshine. the air mass is pretty chilly over the northeast. there is warmth, and it is just waiting to move in here. look at the temperature in chicago.

that is right now. and this milder air is working in our direction. as soon as high pressure scoots to our south, that's going to happen as we head into tomorrow. tomorrow is the warmer weekend day. chilly now. we'll have sunshine all day long. the absence of clouds across the northeast. it's a bright, beautiful day. temperatures are slow to bump up. by midday, it's only in the mid 50's. we'll still be in the mid and upper 50's in most spots as we get toward later this afternoon, perhaps making a run toward6 spent most of the afternoon in the 50's. bright sunshine and light wind is a picture-perfect fall day. whatever you've got getting on, enjoy: winds turn to the south overnight and a southwest wind tomorrow brings in that warmth. we're making a run towards 70 in boston. warmer metrowest to merrimack valley. could sneak up into the lower 70's. it is going to be warm at gillette for the kickoff tomorrow.

we may nudge toward 70. there will be a few high clouds that come in in the afternoon. this front comes through on sunday evening with very limited moisture. there's just not a lot with it. our only chance of wet weather is sunday night. you can see there's not much to be had into first thing monday morning and clouds continue to shift southward. we'll brighten it up on monday and warm it up. 70's on monday. we'll make a run toward 80 degrees on tuesday. the record high on tuesday is 82. and we're going to be close. fa wednesday as well. and then toward the end of the week, signs of change as we cool things down and perhaps bring in wet weather as we head toward late next week and next weekend. gorgeous this weekend. enjoy it. doug and antoinette? antoinette: we love it. cindy, thank you. 8:17. checking in on some of the other stories happening now -- doug: a new milestone in the effort to fight climate change. more than 100 countries,

a deal to reduce hydrofluorocarbons. the greenhouse gas is more powerful and destructive than carbon dioxide. the agreement reached after all-night negotiations. they were introduced as a substitute for ozone-depleting gases. antoinette: the center span of the sarah mildred long bridge connecting new hampshire and maine has been removed. the 250-foot span was supposed to be gone yesterday, but it was behind schedule. department of transportation workers used the high tide this morning to help float the span to the state pr. wants the courts to release all of the documents from a grand jury investigation into curt schilling's failed video game company. the state decided against pursuing criminal charges after it lost $75 million in a deal that first brought 38 studios to rhode island. the governor says residents were hurt by the bad deal and have the right to know what happened. the state's economic development agency did file a civil suit against the company. >> now here's josh brogadir with

josh: gronk is questionable for the game against the bengals, but he told us two days ago he's feeling the best he last all season. and so friday's absence was due to illness. shocked if he's not in there on sunday. tom brady was on the practice field yesterday. he will bring the fire for his first home game of the season. martellus bennett was there, too, for the second straight day. we saw him getting some extra work on that sore ankle, the one he hurt against the browns. this week's challenge a bengals team. that's-3 they've made the playoffs five straight years but haven't won any of those games. doesn't matter to chris long. >> well, it's a big game for us. cincinnati is an impressive team offensively and defensively, so it's a big test for us. anytime we have a test like that, it's exciting, and obviously playing at home, we -- we obviously want to do a good job of, you know, getting off to a fast start. josh: that's it for sports. i'm josh brogadir. have a great day.

baker signed a declaration creating metastatic breast cancer day. doug: we visit a true wonder woman from wellesley living with the disease. antoinette: erika tarantal shows us how she's rallying her community in a special way. >> we have to move forward and stay positive and be grateful for each day. erika: that smile is the giveaway. carol revealing her superpower, positivity. she is wonder woman. maybe now you remember. we introduced you to carol right before she ran this year's marathon while battling two stage four cancers. she hasn't slowed down. she's feeling good, and on a mission. >> i want to help educate people about what it's like to live with stage four disease. erika: that's metastatic breast cancer which means it's spread. it's incurable. carol will have treatments for life. >> even for an adult to understand you can have breast cancer in your skull, spine,

erika: and difficult for patients during breast cancer awareness month. she says too often it's not highlighted. hence her rally cry on her cape, stage four needs more. >> we have different physical and emotional needs than early stage breast cancer patients. erika: this thanksgiving for a third year, carol's organized a charity turkey trot in wellesley to raise awareness and money. thousands attend. >> the funds go specific to metastatic cancer research. erika: the community responding to her call in all kinds of ways. carol quickly befriended patrice goldman. they specialize in home goods and art. but patrice was inspired by carol to add what she says fashion with compassion. this is the newly designated carol's corner. >> the proceeds from carol's corner go directly to dana farber breast cancer research. erika: the inventory, many have been moved to donate items. >> this is a dress that one of

1980's. antoinette: as of noon today, samsung galaxy note 7 phones will be banned from all airline flights. the ban follows nearly 100 cases of the note 7's catching fire. passengers who attempt to take them on flights may be forced to give the phones up to security or face fines. doug: right now, a 22-year-old woman is behind bars after a sudden and bizarre end to a kidnapping case. abigail hanna changed her plea to guilty in the snatching and abandoning of a 2-year-old girl. newscenter 5's diane cho was in salem when that sentence was handed down. [inaudible] reporter: abigail hanna tearfully apologizing in court today after pleading guilty to several charges including kidnapping.

understand the nature of the proceedings? >> no, your honor. reporter: she was arrested after she kidnapped a then 2-year-old girl she used to babysit. >> nine days before the kidnapping, she used her cell phone to search the internet for various child kidnapping cases, the legal definition of kidnapping and how to find the kidnapper. reporter: the child was find alive last november on the side of the road naked, her head shaved with circular shaved burn marks on her body and abrasions on her forehead. >> her presentation and her softness does not excuse the family and the horror that she inflicted on this family isn't abated just because the child was found. it really does maintain in large measure until this day. reporter: hanna's attorney says she believes strongly if mental health were not a significant portion of this case, hanna would not find herself in the position she's in. >> that being said, judge, i am not suggesting that the case conforms truly to a not guilty.

we'd be having a trial. reporter: there were several conditions placed on her probation including she stays 100 yards away from the victim and her family. in salem, diane cho, wcvb newscenter 5. antoinette: disturbing new details in the deadly home invasion in orange that investigators say was a random attack. investigators say joshua hart and brittany smith forced their way into the home of thomas harty and joanne fisher last week, stabbing the 95-year-old man to death. they also allegedly tried to suffocate fier wanted to steal the elderly couple's car. >> they saw that there were people that lived in the home and their intention was to go in and rob those people, take money and take that car. and they armed themselves before they entered. antoinette: prosecutors say hart

[applause] antoinette: the democratic nominee made a guest appearance on "ellen" yesterday. ellen's crew having just a little bit of fun, tweaking the video from sunday's debate. clinton is also fending off more allegations after the antisecrecy group wikileaks dumped another load of hacked emails.

cancel a planned speech to a wall street investment firms because of the concerns the clintons may appear too cozy with wall street. that as hillary clinton was about to announce her campaign for president. the speech was eventually canceled. the final debate is wednesday in las vegas. our very own emily riemer will be there with pre and post debate coverage right here on newscenter 5. doug: a worcester man is on probation after pleading guilty to spiking a woman's drink. daniel szklarz faced his victim in court, megan winslow, telling the judge the drug almost killed her. she and her husband were attending a fundraiser with szklarz in 2014 when he slipped a pill into her drink. he later offered to drive the pair home. winslow says by testifying, she is speaking up for women everywhere. >> i'm here because i know there are other women like me who did not or could not speak up. the hospital couldn't tell me what was put in my drink, but i do know what it did to me.

breathing. doug: prosecutors asked for the maximum 2 1/2 years behind bars for assault and battery, but the judge imposed the minimum sentence of one year probation. swan scott police releasing this video hoping you can help identify this man believed to be a responsible of suspicious fires. a car was set on fire saturday on doherty circle and another thisas antoinette: new details after a major mistake at a worcester hospital. a kidney removed from the wrong patient. investigators say this past july, a surgeon at st. vincent hospital was supposed to remove a kidney from a -- a diseased kidney from a patient. the surgeon did not confirm the patient's identity and instead took a healthy kidney out of another patient who had the same name. the two patients had different birthdates.

st. vincent says it is taking steps to prevent similar mistakes. doug: right now, police are searching for a man they are calling a serial kidnapper. the suspect caught on camera. you can see him here in an alley wearing a cap and hooded sweatshirt allegedly casing a home in cleveland, ohio. police say he then snatched a 6-year-old girl from her bedroom in the middle of the night, attacking her and dropping her off 17 hours later in a different neighborhood. her parents demanding justice. >> he just walks in there, unknowing about anything, and is willing to take someone's kid. doug: that same suspect, police say, broke in through a window and tried to kidnap a 10-year-old girl from her bedroom several months earlier. she was able to fight him off and called for her father, but that suspect got away. it's 8:41 right now. some encouraging news in your health this morning. antoinette: fewer americans are dying of breast cancer. one reason for the decline in the death rate. doug: the patriots are gearing up for tom brady's first game back at gillette stadium.
