like we're about to have over the next three days where, you know, we're going against the grain, i guess you could say. clear skies out tonight right now. a delicious day heading into new england. we do have a cold front off to our west. that's where we're finding scattered showers and maybe a few downpours working through the great lakes. high pressure moves out to sea. that allows for warmer temperatures to start building in. how warm is it? well, we've got 70 in st. louis. we've got 60's up toward detroit. toronto at that's going to be building in here. it is a little chilly to start this morning. 30's and 40's across the board. a great recovery temperaturewise today. we'll talk about hit or miss showers and when record warmth is possible coming up straight ahead. antoinette? antoinette: breaking news, one person seriously hurt after this crash on i-95 in attleboro. it happened just after 3:00 this morning. at least one person suffered

crash involved vehicles on both sides of the highway, but it's unclear just how it happened. doug: the eyeopener diane cho reports the father is known to police and not cooperating. diane: dorothy was inside her home when the gunfire erupted. >> my car was shot out like two bullet holes. diane: police say a 2-year-old litt backseat of a car in a case where they believe her father was the intended target. >> i wish we had more cooperation. obviously, the father here is a known gang kid to us who also is not telling us the truth of what happened here. and it's unfortunate. diane: the police commissioner says they believe the little girl was shot in the hand and the bullet went through her leg. she is expected to recover. >> it's just sad.

baby was injured. diane: a shots fired activation went off just after 4:00. when officers got to the scene, they found shell casings but didn't find any victims. they later learned the child's father brought the 2-year-old to an area hospital. >> everybody should be outraged. unfortunately, too often, we don't get the cooperation that can stop this senseless violence. diane: last sunday, a 9-year-old girl suffered nonlife-threatening injuries when she was shot o away from where this shooting took place. >> it's way too much going on throughout this community. not just in this area. throughout the whole entire city. and it just needs to come to a halt. diane: the 2-year-old child is expected to be okay. police are asking if you have any information that can help in this case to call the boston police department. at police headquarters, diane cho, wcvb newscenter 5. antoinette: presidential candidates hillary clinton and donald trump taking time off the campaign trail today ahead of

safety after the car went under. everyone is expected to be okay. joy will not face criminal charges. antoinette: the two boston police officers injured in wednesday's shooting remain in critical but stable condition. officer matt morris was in surgery again at mass general yesterday. commissioner bill evans visited officer richard cintolo who is in good spirits and recovering after his surgery on friday. police continue to investigate the shooting. friday, boston police removed several bags of evidence from although the shooter was shot dead, prosecutors say more criminal charges may be filed. doug: the family of a swimmer who died during lifeguard tryouts down on the cape is demanding $100,000 this damages. 22-year-old jack jakubek died at a tryout back in may. now his family says the town is liable because lifeguard ignored his signal for help. police saying a lifeguard told them he saw jakubek raise his

floodwaters, bringing the death toll in that state to 26. areas like this referred to as disaster zones. miles away, other neighborhoods hardly appear hit at all. the governor says it's not over yet. >> there's still many, many difficult days ahead for north carolina and many of our citizens who are being impacted by this incredible hurricane that has been with us now for over 10 days. doug: flooding triggered by the hurricane killed at least 43 500 people in haiti. antoinette: the northwest dealing with their own powerful storm. the remnants of a pacific typhoon barreled down on parts of oregon and washington, snapping trees and power lines with winds up to 80 miles per hour. tens of thousands of people were without power after that storm made landfall last night. so far no reports of any serious injuries. and it's still pretty wet out there. some lingering showers in that area. a.j.: still another batch of

this is an old typhoon. it developed west of hawaii, went over toward japan and then curled back and is now coming up through the northern pacific. doug: is that rare up there? a.j.: you can get the remnants of these systems this time of year. this one was especially powerful. it had a lot of juice with it. still spawning all kinds of nasty weather in the pacific northwest. for us, though, we actually kind of benefit slightly by what's going on out there, the reason being when you have a b in the west, you usually get a big ridge of high pressure in the east, which equals out to milder temperatures. it is chilly out there, but we're running about 5 to 10, even 14 degrees above where we were at this very same time yesterday morning. but i did mention it is fairly chilly. nashua is at freezing right now. there is patchy fog up there as well. maybe getting some freezing fog in some extreme cases up there. 35 bedford. 31 in norwood.

41 in falmouth. as chilly as it is right now, we get a great recovery temperaturewise for today. while you may go out and grab the paper this morning, head out for your cup of coffee with a jacket or coat, you'll be closer to wearing shorts by this afternoon. we've got sunshine out there or will have sunshine once the sun comes up. and we look off to the west, we have clouds and some scattered showers working through the great lakes. we'll watch this boundary as it works toward us and gives us a period of some cloudy weather. we'll talk about that momentarily. 60's to near 70 degrees. that's what's ahead of the front. that will replace all these blues you see in here. we've got some very warm temperatures coming up starting today. as that high slips offshore, that helps pump in milder air. here's that cold front, the one i told you gets hung up over new england. it will keep clouds around through a good portion of monday. let's take you through this hour

as we head through the afternoon, a few increasing clouds. we're now heading on toward the midnight hour of sunday into monday. the clouds have taken over in many spots. there may be a spot or two of shower activity coming through. nothing of consequence. maybe wetting the roadways in time for tomorrow morning. notice the clouds especially from mass on southward. the mass-new hampshire border southward. the farther north you go, the more sunshine you'll see for tomorrow. at any time tomorrow. then as the front begins to lift back, there may be a shower. as that lifts northward, we get into warmer temperatures. 60's to near 70 degrees today. lots of sunshine. sunset this evening at 6:00. by halloween it's 5:38. and by december 5, the earliest sunset, 4:12 in the evening.

giti tire is recalling several sizes of its models because of a defect that causes cracks allowing air to leak out. meantime, continental tire is recalling certain models installed on more than 14,500 general motors vehicles. those tires could have a problem that could cause excessive tread wear and bulging areas. all tires will be replaced for free. doug: vermont police investigating after a human skull was found in sheldon. investigators say it could belong to the victim of an unreported homicide. police searched the home after a tip. forensic tests are underway to determine the identity and cause of death. announcer: now here's josh brogadir with sportscenter 5 powered by xfinity. josh: bruins got their fans excited in a come from behind season opening win in columbus thursday night. hey, who doesn't like six goals. but those were the blue jackets.

now in the books and less than a month remaining to election day, it's time to take stock of what america has seen and heard, or more to the point, not heard. there are no points awarded for sheer originality, as this race has charted new destructive territory. mud slinging seems like such a quaint term for the negative campaigning in 2016. sadly, such originality makes many voters want to take a shower rather than becoming enlightened and inspired by these debates. the continsl blow to the ideal of participatory democracy. the next president will face some daunting, unsolved issues that cannot be ignored. but at the last debate, they were ignored. the topics never mentioned, climate change, education, income gap, gun violence. infrastructure. on the list, liar, misogynist, email breaching and sex tape. while we obviously support the institution of nationally televised presidential debates,

worcester. i think they dry up as they continue trying to press eastward, as it typical for this summer/fall. notice how the clouds stick around into tomorrow morning? the farther north you go, north of the merrimack valley, 93, 95 toward new hampshire or maine, you'll have brighter skies. for us, rather cloudy with intermittent sunshine, a pocket or two of light shower activity possible. and then with this little disturbance coming through tuesday morning, probably in the wee hours, we may g or thundershower quickly. then this lifts to the north and we turn much more mild, much warmer, i should say, by tuesday. so how much rainfall? not a whole lot. talking generally about, you know, 1/10 inch from the first batch and another batch with another 1/10 inch. piddly amounts of rainfall. nearing 70 with a bunch of sunshine today. tonight down to the 50's and 60's. much milder than it has been. tomorrow back into the 70's we go with light winds.

doug: "chronicle's" anthony everett takes us there. >> it goes back 150 years. it's one of the oldest continuing industries in massachusetts. >> cranberry country starts west of the canal. >> bluewater farms, we're a family owned local company. reporter: on his 50 acres, he maintains wet and dry boggs. most growers flood their bogs. he uses dry picking. >> have small machines you walk behind and combs the fruit out of the vines. goes up a conveyor into a bag. from the bag, we load it into bins.

right onto the trailer. reporter: when the berries get to the plant, they go through a multistep process. >> first it goes through the blower which removes all the leaves and vines and everything. from there, it goes through the sizer, which takes out all the small fruit and any small pebbles. then it goes through the bounce conveyor. good fruit bounces like a tennis ball. it spills off the side of the conveyor and bounces on an angled board. if it bounces over the gate, the fruit goes to the color sorter all the whites, the pinks, the greens. reporter: canning tells us few companies wash their dry-picked cranberries, but here they get a bath. >> we start the drying process. the fruit is dried. we get one final visual inspection where we have people making sure that everything's perfect before it gets bagged. reporter: bluewater bags its dry harvest berries. their traditional wet-picked are used to make six flavors of juice. >> we'd like to continue

wounds in plymouth near plymouth university. firefighters telling our sister staples wmur that they responded to an off-campus housing at around 4:00 this morning. no word on the condition of the victims or if they are students. also breaking, one person seriously hurt after this crash on i-95 this north attleboro. state police there saying it happened near exit 5 just after 3:00 a.m. at least one person suffering nonlife-threatening injuries. mansfield firefighters say the crash involved vehicles still unclear just how this accident happened. antoinette: right now, a 2-year-old girl is recovering after she was shot in roxbury. police are searching for the suspect who they believe was targeting the girl's father, who was in the car with the girl at the time. the father is a suspected gang member, and police say he is not cooperating with their investigation. doug: the two boston police officers injured in wednesday's shooting remain in critical but stable condition this morning. officer matt morris was in

yesterday. commissioner bill evans visited officer richard cintolo, who was in good spirits and recovering after his surgery on friday. the suspect was shot dead during the gun battle. meanwhile, donald trump suggesting that hillary clinton used drugs to enhance her debate performance. he made the comments during an event up in new hampshire yesterday, saying that clinton should take a drug test before wednesday's debate. the clinton campaign has not yet responded. both candidates are off the campaign trail today. the u.s. navy is another possible missile attack on ships off yemen's coast. the missiles were picked up by radar but not yet confirmed. army officials say the strikes came from a rebel-controlled area but did not hit any u.s. ships in the red sea. this comes just days after u.s. missile strikes destroyed three radar strikes in yemen in retaliation for two earlier strikes. antoinette: late-night tv host jimmy kimmel was in boston this weekend for a charity event. doug: he and bill simmons hosted
