emily: good morning, it is monday, october 17. i'm emily riemer. doug: i'm doug meehan. randy is off this week. searching for answers in roxbury after a toddler is shot. emily: no arrests after an hours-long incident in revere. the questions that neighborhood has for police this morning. doug: an attac headquarters with a warning to republicans. the assault both sides are condemning. emily: we will get to all of those stories. first i want to check in with cindy, look at your forecast. really mild, right? like really mild. cindy: quite a change from the past several mornings. we were talking about frost. 63 in boston. this west-southwesterly wind has kept the temperatures up overnight. so this is the difference between now and yesterday morning at this same time.

area. you're stepping out into the 50's in worcester county. 61 beverly. we've got lower 60's from plymouth out to the cape as well. it is a mild start. however, you can see there's a little bit of cloud cover around. there were a couple of sprinkles overnight. those have pressed offshore and fallen apart. there's a frontal boundary, a weak one, moving through. as it continues to drop southward, the clouds are going to be decreasing, and you see on the other side of that front, temperatures really not that chilly at all. so it is a mild day. cloud cover this thinning out. we're heading into the 70's this afternoon, way above average for this time of year. and it gets warmer tomorrow. we'll check that coming up. i want to get you out to the roads. kevin in for olessa this morning. kevin: looking good, zakim bridge to the o'neill tunnel. the only big work crew is 93 northbound leaving the city. got a right lane closure here

between exits 28 and 29. not really slowing things down at all. 128 southbound overnight, we had that ramp to route 3 northbound closed. that has since been reopened. and you're looking at a very good ride on the whole upper end. no trouble on 3, 24, 95 from the south, 93, 95 from new hampshire down in great shape. emily: breaking overnight, a person was not in lawrence. this was the scene on haverhill street at 9:30. a man was flown to a boston hospital for treatment. no word on arrests. doug: a convicted sex offender is expected back in court. richard gardner was arrested in a shelter friday night. he served 30 years for kidnapping and raping several boys. emily: a 19-year-old is expected

police arrested terrence simmons jr. after a man hunt. he stabbed three men in plymouth, new hampshire. two of the victims are students at plymouth state university. all three are expected to survive. new this morning, a grandmother is pleading for witnesses to come forward after her granddaughter was shot roxbury. doug: the eyeopener's sera congi live in boston. sera: doug and emily, brenda peoples wants the community to step up and speak up on behalf of her 2-year-old granddaughter who was the victim this weekend of gunshot wounds. this all happened on saturday in roxbury. the shooting happening in broad daylight. the toddler was sitting in the back seat of a car where police believe her father was the

girl's leg. her grandmother speaking to "the globe" is asking people to come forward and say what they saw. people saying, quote, i wish the young people, the youth around here, would take life a little more seriously. now that little girl is recovering from those gunshot wounds. boston police saying that her father is not cooperating because of gang relations. live at boston police headquarter, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: thank you. police response in revere. this morning, police say there will be no arrests after the hours-long incident. the eye's nicole estaphan live in revere with the new questions. nicole? nicole: certainly a bizarre situation on francis street early yesterday morning. those involved say they want answers. it all started around 4:30 a.m. after a report of shots fired at a home here, but neighbors say they didn't hear anything. swat was called. several tenants were detained for hours.

doug: welcome back. in north carolina, cleanup from hurricane matthew is expected to cost more than $1.5 billion. nearly 100,000 buildings and homes are damaged, and the floodwaters have not receded in some communities. the governor has declared a state of emergency. emily: and remnants of a pacific typhoon packed a powerful punch

look at the jet stream the next couple of days building to our north. that is going to send warmer temperatures in our direction. record high temperatures will be in reach, it looks like. tomorrow, the record high in boston is 82. we'll be close. warm stuff. 58 out the door in worcester. we've got lower 60s from marshfield to taunton down to the cape. upper 50's southern new hampshire. boston is 63. notice we're going to hold in the 60's for a while this afternoon, up to the lower 70's. it's going to be a mild day. notice clouds around. today's not perfectly sunny like we had much of the weekend. you can see there are clouds coming through this morning, but to the north, see how they clear out? drier air is trying to work in. the real warm air just to the south of this frontal boundary, and as it begins to lift north tomorrow, we'll get even warmer than today.

out in the 50's and 60's, clouds give way to sunshine and just like that with a westerly wind we're going to push the temperatures to about 73 this afternoon in boston, 71 in worcester. look at taunton, 76. even on the cape, making a run toward 70 degrees this afternoon. look at your low temperatures tonight. upper 50's and lower 60's. keep in mind an average high this time of year is in the lower 60's. that's where low temperatures will be tonight. overnight there will be cloud cover around. mainly hampshire especially. then the skies after tomorrow morning being murky will brighten up in the afternoon. this frontal boundary is going to begin to lift northward again tomorrow, but it may get hung up somewhere across southern new hampshire. look at this. lawrence 82. you're 70 in portsmouth. even cooler north of there. may not get out of the 60's in parts of maine. quite a change across new england. we'll be on the warm side of that front. record high temperatures are

wednesday, actually, but nonetheless, these record high temperatures going to be in reach. we go through wednesday into thursday, we'll start to increase the clouds on thursday, and then on friday, that looks like our next chance for some rain. a frontal boundary approaches from the west, but there's going to be some moisture feeding up from the south. there could be some tropical moisture in this. that may interact with this frontal boundary. so a pretty good chance we get a soaking rain on friday. and right now looks like we push that out over the course of the weekend, which is great news, because the head of the charles is c saturday, but we should be drying out. doug: sounds like a great week. we're off to a pretty good start on area roadways. we'll start picking up those overnight work crews, especially on that lower deck of the zakim bridge heading into the o'neill tunnel. we picked up the right lane on the tobin bridge from chelsea. we'll go to the maps. up to the north, not a big deal. looking pretty good. light volume. it's morning. we'll see how the morning plays

to 128. route 3 coming out of nashua into burlington. looking good out to the west as well, mass pike, 495 to and from the pike, no troubles in downtown worcester. south of town, looking good from rhode island up to 93. heading for the expressway, so far so good. pretty much wide open. 11 minutes braintree to the o'neill tunnel. doug? doug: thank you. a dramatic rescue caught on camera a driver cause add two-car crash before his vehicle ended up down an embankment yesterday in palm bay, the vehicle going up in flames as witnesses and police tried to get the man out. eventually, he was pulled to safety. everybody nearby formed a human chain to help pull him up out of that embankment. police say the man is expected to recover. today, bicycle safety activists will hold a rally at cambridge city hall after the deaths of

earlier by a truck in porter square. amanda phillips back in june by a truck near inman square. no charges were filed. advocates today are calling for changes like protected bike lanes at intersections, lower speed limits across cambridge as a whole, and restricting semi trailer operation in parts of the city. the rally begins at 4:30. emily: the mbta is preparing to hold a meeting about a string of green trolly derailments. the audit f s derailments last year and five this year including one in may. "the globe" reports that number is higher than any other light rail system in the country. now, an mbta spokesperson does point out the rate per miles traveled is lower than san francisco and new orleans. doug: to your economy on this monday morning. asian shares were mostly lower overnight. investors remaining cautious following friday's comments from the u.s. federal reserve about slow recovery from the great recession. right now stocks futures are lower.

today. more and more retailers are pulling back on black friday shopping sales. increasing numbers of malls and stores will stay closed on thanksgiving in response to backlash for opening early. the mall of america will stay closed until black friday. walmart, macy's and target, which were opened on hasn't announced. emily: a space blast sending two astronauts to a space lab. the u.s. has expressed concern about the capabilities of the lab, saying china could use it to prevent adversaries from using space assets in a crisis. china denies those claims. doug: a police officer responds to a noise complaint in texas, but it's not what everybody thought.

underway in iraq. the iraqi military is carrying out an assault against isis to take back the key city of mosul, the last of the terror group's strongholds in that country. the u.s.-led coalition is carrying out airstrikes as well but not taking part in ground combat. about a million people of expected to leave that city which could create a massive refugee crisis. emily: a man is recovering after a shooting in fitchburg. the store argument with somebody and then was shot. police are now reviewing surveillance cameras that captured the incident. the man was shot in the shoulder and is expected to be okay. doug: one man is dead in a chain reaction crash in lakeville. to motorcycles and a car collided yesterday morning. a 77-year-old man riding one of those motorcycles was killed. three other people were hospitalized with serious injuries. emily: a fire in boston shuts

first floor of a four-story brownstone. there is significant damage to an art gallery on the first floor and a restaurant in the base many. damage estimates close to a million dollars. no word on a cause. doug: check out this frightening video. a close call on the water caught on camera. watch as that wave hits the boat tipping it over nearly hitting two surfers off of california's ventura beach. the boat capsized when it hit a sandbar. harbor patrol are investigating and they say this was likely reckless going through that area. emily: tom brady's gillette stadium homecoming ends in a win over the bengals. cincinnati did its best to spoil the party, taking a 14-10 lead early, but brady is solid throwing for three touchdowns, including this one to gronk. final score 35-17. the pats are on the road the next two weeks and take on the steelers next sunday. doug: that was a short-sleeve game. it was beautiful.

know, early september out there yesterday. it was great. and we're going to have even warmer temperatures the next few days, but did you get a chance yesterday morning especially to check out that moon that was out there? it was full just after midnight saturday night into sunday morning. we call the full moon in the month of october the full hunter's moon. gorgeous capture from westford on our ulocal page. not quite the visibility of the money this morning we had over the weekend. there's cloud cover around right now. you see the clouds. they are dropping southward. and they are clearing skies to our north. a little bit of cloud cover this morning. then we are going to brighten things up today. partial sunshine developing. a frontal boundary moving on through. and this front is trying to bring in slightly cooler air for today, but just to the south, there is some really warm stuff, and that is going to be working in as the front lifts north tomorrow. just to give you perspective, yesterday we topped 70 degrees. we're going to do that again today. average high this time of year is 61.

around 80 degrees flirting with record highs and we're still near 80 coming up on wednesday. we begin to trend things down as we head toward the end of the week. talk about some warm temperatures there indeed headed our ways. low 70's in boston today. look at new york city. near 80 today. phil philly, d.c., in the lower 80's. this warmth goes back to chicago where it's going to be in the lower 80's. pretty quiet weather overall. a cluster of showers near the great lakes. that looks like i northern new england tomorrow as this frontal boundary lifts northward again. so this front is the dividing line between real warm temperatures and slightly cooler air and that front is going to be lifting up to coastal maine coming up tomorrow, so we are making that run toward 80 degrees in boston. we may sneak into the lower 80's through the merrimack valley. flirting with record highs tomorrow and wednesday. thursday, the clouds increase and our next chance for wet weather comes in on friday as the front approaches. there may be some tropical moisture with this.
