erika: good tuesday morning. i'm erika tarantal. doug: i'm doug meehan. randy is off. emily's on her way to the presidential debate. a convicted sex offender facing new charges. the latest allegations involving a child. erika: a car in the backseat. a search for the thief. >> i was surprised. i don't know that person that would talk that way. doug: melania trump defending her husband and where she's pointing the blame. erika: we want to check in with cindy. wasn't expecting this much rain. cindy: we had heavy downpours. you can see the trend. everything is pushing toward the south and east to the cape.

greater boston area. you can see we've got heavy rain south of the city of boston moving toward quincy and norwood. also a little bit of fog we're dealing with out there this morning. visibility is down to five miles. not a huge impact. it is out there and it is mild. temperatures mostly running in the low 60's right now. we've got this frontal boundary moving through. this has been the pathway for those showers to roll through this morning. this front may actually across northeastern massachusetts. and that may keep you cooler than the rest of the region. notice behind this the clearing that's happening across connecticut. we are going to get these showers out of here by 8:00 a.m. notice how we lift those clouds out. worcester, you're in sunshine by noontime. it will take longer across eastern massachusetts. we see brightening skies and temperatures respond. by 2:00 this afternoon, already over 70 degrees. we are going to make that run toward 80 degrees today, near

indecent assault and battery on a child. he lives in lowell. doug: boston police are asking for help in identifying this person of interest in the shooting of a toddler in roxbury. police say he might hold critical clues in that investigation. he was operating a black scooter and wearing a black helmet at around the time of the shooting art afternoon. the 2-year-old was hit in the hand and leg sitting in a car seat. erika: police are looking for a car thief who stole a vehicle in roxbury with a baby inside. doug: the car down safely late last night. the eyeopener's juli mcdonald live where this started. juli? juli: that baby is back with his family and safe. although no excuse, police believe the thief didn't see the precious cargo in the backseat. the car was stolen from this mobil station behind me on

doug: we need it. cindy: we do. the story will be the temperatures warming up. we hit 75 yesterday. that makes two in a row over 70 degrees. today we're going to be close although probably not get there with these record high temperatures. forecast in boston today now a little bit cooler. about 79, near 80. the record is 82. we're going to be oh, so close. going to be harder to get that record in worcester. that was 85. thinking we'll get to 77 in worcester. still really warm for this time of year. right now and it is mild despite the rain. we've got low 60's in cape. worcester 62. mid and upper 50's on the north shore. boston 62 right now. compare that to our average high temperature this time of year, which is 61 degrees. so it's already mild out there this morning. it's going to be a warm day. we do have this rain that is moving through this morning. everything is shifting here from northwest to southeast. we're winding the rain down through worcester county. downpours in boston.

as we get closer into the city right now, still some showers along the pike moving toward boston as well. look at quincy down to randolph and scituate. you have the heaviest rain dropping toward you on cape cod following this frontal boundary. on the other side of this front, the real warm air resides. this front may get hung up. you can see how much clearer this will work on with time this morning. let me step you through it on futurecast. showers are long gone. we have clouds. my noontime, we're breaking out into sunshine around the worcester area. along the coast, still cloudy. that's going to hold temperatures down. once skies brighten up deeper in the afternoon, temperatures will come up. the last place to see that will be north of boston. this is where we'll be running cooler. 79 in boston. 77 in worcester.

shot of sneaking up to 80 degrees. still a mild night. low to mid 60's. there could be a couple of showers around tonight, especially the second half of the night. we'll watch the moisture drop down from the north and west. this is a cold frontal boundary. we'll manage a westerly wind. still near 80 degrees tomorrow. once that front goes by, we cool things down. should feature a good amount of sunshine tomorrow. we get into thursday. this next front starts to lift northward. that's going to bring in more showers, especially as we get toward the e after tomorrow, it's in the mid 60's. showers could develop late on thursday. then as we get into friday, looks like the potential for a good soaking rain as we'll watch the moisture off the atlantic coast lift northward. that could be tropical in nature. as it does so, it sets up just right. we could get good downpours on friday with soaking rain wrapping up. we'll dry things out for the weekend. but what a change in temperatures. it may struggle to get out of the 50's on sunday with a gusty

big change after the near 80? temperatures. kevin: we're getting a downpour over route 3. looking good over the zakim bridge. we'll pick up the overnight work crews in both directions on the zakim bridge. now, downtown, let's go to the maps. still have overnight work crews. ted williams tunnel westbound has been closed for the overnight, expected to reopen by 5:00 a.m.,he minutes, possibly by the time you get there. if not, you'll have to use the sumner tunnel. on the mass pike, east and westbound, work crews between 93 and the alston-brighton tolls. the expressway not too bad. heavy rains out of that braintree stretch could be slippery. hydroplaning could be an issue coming out of the braintree split. most of the way up should be a decent ride. route 3 could be slippery with heavy puddling conditions as well as 24 and 95.

police officers critically hurt in a shootout last week and this morning they are improving. fellow officers and neighbors gathered in an east boston church last night. that's where richard cintolo and matt morris were upgraded to stable condition. officer morris went through more surgery on his leg, but both said to be getting better. >> the good news is they're out of the critical stage and they're stable at this time. they're both in good spirits. i'm just thankful that officers are making such remarkable process. erika: kirk figueroa was killed in the shootout. he opened fire first as officers responded to a domestic call. doug: more questions about a standoff in revere. investigators are looking into the possibility that this 9-1-1 call was a hoax. >> there are shots being fired

avenue. doug: there was no call back and there is not francis ave in revere. only francis street. that's where swat team arrived. each tenant was let go without charges or explanation. the tenant questioning who made that call and why. >> we never had any problems. i don't know -- i don't know who called, you know. i don't know why -- why they came over here. dougli investigating. erika: the chief of the wellesley police department apologizing for historic mistreatment of people of color. the chief made comments yesterday in san diego in his role as the president of the international associations of chiefs of police. >> for our part, the first step in this process is for the law enforcement profession and the iacp to acknowledge and apologize for the actions of the past and the role that our profession has played in

erika: chief cunningham believes apologies will help everyone move forward but also says today's officers are not the blame for the past. doug: the mbta is looking forward a future with no cash involved in its entire fare system. the new system would allow credit cards and smartphones to pay fares, but bar cash as an alternative to the electronic payment. commuter rail riders currently have this option. the mbta hopes commutes saying cash systems slow down schedules. a check of the asian markets. shares were mostly higher ahead of china's quarterly growth data release. stock futures here are also higher. september's housing market index report is due out today. erika: trending stories, a major milestone for nasa as a new shipment of supplies launched for the international space station. one of nasa's main delivery companies launched from

erika: a baby back safe. police searching for the thief. it happened at a mobil gas station on washington street around 9:30. the car was tracked down about a block and a half away with only the baby inside. he was not harmed, and again was reunited with his mother. doug: the lawyer for this man accused of assaulting a 5-year-old fitchburg boy later found dead is requesting evidence to be suppressed. he wants statements jailhouse informant days before the body of jeremiah oliver was found in a suitcase along a highway in sterling. nobody was been charged in that boy's death. sierra and the boy's mother, elsa oliver, facing charges. erika: this merrimack, new hampshire, high school teacher is out on bail after facing child pornography charges.

home opener on thursday. cindy fitzgibbon, it's wet out there. cindy: we've got rain rolling through. not everyone seeing it. not a whole lot, the worcester area westward. we've had downpours coming through the boston area and that focus of heavier rain shifting south of the city right now. from norwood to sharon over to weymouth and marshfield, it's pouring, but it's not going to last that long. this rain is riding right toward skies clear out across connecticut along a frontal boundary which may get stuck and hung up for a while here in northeastern massachusetts. one side of the front is very warm. in fact near record highs. on the other side of the front, it is much cooler. look at the highs in bangor, maine. near 80 in new york city. 82 philly. 84 d.c. we'll be in between 70's to 80 degrees locally. the day starts out murky.

70's back to chicago. a lot of warmth for this time of year. a stretch of quiet weather back toward the great lakes. chicago, st. louis. that's our weather coming up for tomorrow as we've got this frontal boundary that crosses in the morning. high pressure noses in for the afternoon with sunshine. mild tomorrow. it starts to get cooler. thursday, we'll watch an area of moisture ride toward us. i think we get back in wet weather late thursday. on friday, we're going to be watching this right here, moisture in the southeast bahamas th this moisture may get involved in a frontal boundary pushing on toward us. so the potential for a good soaking rainfall here on friday. the good news is it gets on out of here for your weekend plans, but turns much cooler after the weekend. near 80. then we trend downward. 61, and we may not get out of the 50's on sunday. right now, we have heavy rain falling across the area. we're going to track that for you, give you the full timeline
