cindy: this is in honor of michael phelps. we had downpours roll through parts of the area. i want to show you the rain since midnight. not a great representation, but north and west primarily so far. we have a cluster of showers dropping south and east ward. 495, you're looking at showers. you can see them showing up on the radar to littleton. she's are shifting. needham into boston has lingering showers. e around the brockton area back to sharon, scituate, marshfield, and this will shift eastward toward the cape as well. a little fog. visibility not a huge issue yet. this fog may thicken up a little bit as we go through the next few hours. 61 worcester. 60 boston. it is a mild start this morning. it's going to be a warm day. we've got these showers in place this morning. we're going to slowly get rid of them. they're associated with a frontal boundary that may get hung up in northeastern

down a little bit. you see the showers exit by 8:00 this morning. clouds linger through lunchtime in a lot of spots. from southwest to northeast, we'll brighten up our skies and the temperatures will respond. it's going to be a slow climb until we break out into the sunshine. warmest readings south and west of the city. may touch 80 in taunton. but may struggle to get into the 70's in parts of the north kevin in for olessa this morning. kevin: going to take it easy. heavy rains to be a hydroplaning issue early this morning. take it easy. downtown, pick up all those overnight work crews. even on the tobin bridge. shouldn't be a problem for you. let's go to the maps. downtown, we had overnight closure of the ted williams tunnel westbound. that should be reopened if not

brockton stretch as well as route 3, braintree most of the way towards ducksbury. lighter rain, some areas heavier than others. up north, not a bad ride 93, 95. trains starting on time. erika: police are looking for a car thief who stole a car with a baby inside. doug: the child is safe. juli mcdonald is live where this started. is back home safely with its family. police believe the thief didn't see the precious cargo. it was stolen just before 9:30 from this mobil station on washington street. officers say no force was used. that suspect just sliding into the red honda while the driver was standing outside of it. boston police tracked down that honda within minutes a block and a half away. the 9-month-old boy still inside

his mother. police tell newscenter 5 they do have a limited description of a suspect, but if you believe you may have seen anything, you are asked to reach out to police. live in roxbury this morning, juli mcdonald, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: juli, thank you. right now, boston police need your help to track down this person of interest in a troubling crime. it's been days since a toddler was shot and still no arrests. that man might hold the critical clues in that investigation. he wpe he appears to have a beard. that shooting saturday afternoon on winslow street injuring a 2-year-old girl who was sitting in the backseat of a car and it's believed the girl's father was the intended target. police say he has gang ties and the fear of retaliation is hindering the investigation. >> people probably know who it is. they've been very uncooperative. it's very frustrating when a 2-year-old gets shot and nobody wants to step up. doug: police say that girl's father is not cooperating with

"the herald" reporting the toddler will have surgery today. a convicted sex offender is facing new charges. charles lovejoy held on a-million-dollar boail. he's currently on five years probation. erika: commitment 2016. a widening gap between hillary clinton and donald trump. 9-point lead nationally over her gop rival. two weeks ago, she was 4 points ahead in the same poll. if you take johnson and stein out of the equation, clinton leads by 11 points. the poll was taken after unwanted accusations of trump came to light and the leak of clinton email. >> i was surprised.

erika: the wife of donald trump dismissing accusations against her husband. she didn't stop there. the eye's nicole estaphan live in boston where the claims against the republican nominee will be the subject of a protest. nicole: that protest set to begin in a few hours, one of many planned nationwide. this comes hours after donald trump's wife defended him, melania trump saying the election is rigged against her husband. she blames billy bush for her husband's remarks in that video. >> he was lead on like egged on from the host to say dirty and bad stuff. >> the media is trying to rig the election by giving credence, and this is so true, by giving credence to false stories that

"the globe" reporting that investigators are now looking into the possibility that this 9-1-1 call was a hoax. >> there are shots being fired in my building at 22 francis ave. i still have a kid in there. i'll be right back. i'll try to get my phone and call you back. doug: the caller said francis avenue. there is no francis avenue in revere, only a francis street. ther have not found the person who made that call. each tenant was detained for hours and let go without charges or explanation. the tenants how questioning who made that call and why. >> we never had any problems, you know. i don't know -- i don't know who calls, you know. i don't know why they came over here. doug: police say they're still investigating. erika: the mbta wants it easier

introduce you to a star student on newscenter 5 at 5:00. record your own. doug: smartphone, ulocal, send it to us. love to put you on tv. cindy: some good range down across the area. it will be out of here in the next couple of hours. impact on the morning commute for sure. once the rain stops, we will be chasing record high temperatures. record in boston is we will be close to those values coming up for this afternoon. already 60 degrees in boston right now. we're 61 in worcester. just for some perspective here, it is the middle of october. an average high temperature this time of year is only 61 degrees. so it is a really warm start to the morning. notice our coolest temperatures. route 2 into southern new hampshire. we have a frontal boundary that may keep those temperatures

from northwest to southeast. this is the trajectory of how these are moving right now. we have decent showers still here along the pike, framingham to needham to waltham stretching toward boston. the heaviest rain from scituate to marshfield and up to brockton. this is continuing to drop south and eastward. it's aiming for you on cape cod. here's the frontal boundary. again, to the north of that front, it's cooler than everywhere south and west. you can see how clear it is over connecticut versus what we're dealing with here in the greater boston area. the difference, we'll be getting rid of these showers by 8:00 this morning. but look at lunchtime. notice how the clouds are stubborn, especially from 495. you may break out of it in worcester. and late in the afternoon, we'll see those skies brightening. warmer temperatures to the south

notice the mid 70's, it may be a struggle, late in the day on the north shore. notice we don't get out of the 60's across portsmouth, new hampshire. a mild night, in the 60's. more clouds overnight. there could be a couple of showers. don't think we'll be dealing with the heavy rain this morning. but we'll start out tomorrow with a little bit of cloud cover and brighten things up. tomorrow is still a warm day with a westerly wind. we've got a shot at hitting 80 again as high pressure noses in. we'll watch more from the south. we start dry on thursday. look what happens as the day wares on. first of all, we're only down in the 60's. closer to average. by the evening commute and especially into the evening hours, there you see some showers moving in. the potential for a steadier soaking rain. we should dry out over the course of the weekend. likely not getting out of the

right now. kevin: it's mild despite the heavy rains. and it's affecting traffic. hydroplaning could be a problem along route 3 and 24. this is a live shot of the expressway. i think a lot of people getting an early jump on the commute knowing it's raining. expressway by the gas tank. we'll go to the maps. a little farther south, heavier rain affecting traffic on 24 northbound. i'm starting to see slowdowns. not a slowdowns through the brockton and avon stretch. route 3 has heavy rain coming out of ducksbury and into the rockland area. out to the west, you do have some rain. be careful out there. volume still on the lighter side. much the same up to the north out of new hampshire. 93 starting to see heavier company now getting through 495. not yet at 128. trains starting on time. erika: it's 5:17.

york city mayor michael bloomberg donating $50 million to the museum of science. he will make the announcement today at the museum. the gift is the largest in the museum's history. bloomberg's donation will go towards education programs and exhibits promoting science and engineering. the education division will be named after bloomberg's parents. doug: checking your economy this tuesday morning, asian shares were mostly higher ahead of china's quarter growth data release. stock futures a investors watching for new consumer data out expected later today. the mbta is looking towards a future with no cash involved in its entire fare system. the new system would allow credit cards and smartphones to pay fares, but bar cash as an alternative to the electronic payments. commuter rail riders have this option. the mbta hopes to speed up daily commutes saying the cash system slows down schedules.

growth. they added nearly 3.6 million new subscribers from july to september. that number far exceeds the company's forecasted 2.3 million subscribers. netflix says interest in original series like "stranger things" and "narcos" helped attract new viewers. cambridge is banning foam food containers. starting thursday, cambridge will prohibit restaurants from serving food or drinks in containers. the city says the material is not biodegradeable, hard to recycle, and can leak harmful chemicals into food. erika: there are signs stress may be taking more of a toll than you think, like headaches. that could be the result of clenching your jaw or gripnding your teeth. also muscle aches.

helping on his recovery on the eye. announcer: you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning. this is newscenter 5's eyeopener. doug: good morning, everybody. 5:30 on this tuesday morning as you're rubbing the sleep out of your eyes. it's going to be a wet. a live look at the zakim bridge, the bottom end of the tobin. it's a tough one. i'm doug meehan. erika: i'm erika tarantal. emil kevin and cindy are here. the rain is moving out. cindy: if you're getting ready to go out right now, there are big puddles and the rain still coming down especially south of boston. you can see it's moving towards you on cape cod. the back edge of these showers up through the merrimack valley along 495, lawrence down to billerica, around the boston area, we have lighter showers starting to taper off by metrowest.

well. we do have quite a bit of fog on the western part of the state where the skies above are clear, but starting to see reduced visibility now around the worcester area now that the rain has stopped. down to 3/4 of a mile. heads-up. in addition to the wet roads, fog may become an issue. right around 60 degrees. it's a mild start to the morning. we've got this really warm air sitting to our south. this frontal boundary working through this morning. this is kind of triggering the showers. also,e' that's going to try and get in here. we'll get rid of the showers by 8:00 this morning. the clouds are going to be a little stubborn especially along and inside of 495 up into southern new hampshire. they're going to linger through lunchtime. from southwest to northeast, we're going to get those clouds out of here and the skies brighten up this afternoon. we're going to hold in the 60's through late morning. once the sun pops out, temperatures are going to jump up. we should make the run toward 80 in taunton.

shootout last week. they are improving. friends and neighbors gathered in an east boston church last night. richard cintolo and matt morris were upgraded to stable condition. both are said to be getting better. >> the good news is they're out of the critical stage, and they're stable at this time. they're both in good spirits. i'm just thankful, honestly, that these two officers are making such remarkable progress. in the shootout, police maintaining he opened fire as the officers responded to a domestic call. no word on a motive. doug: a merrimack, new hampshire, teacher is out on bail accused of soliciting nude photos from an underage student. he sent a 16-year-old student nude pictures of himself and asked her to send some back. he retired from his job yesterday. we now know who police are

i just want what's best for my kids. when i hear arguments that massachusetts needs more charter schools, i think: what about the students in all of our schools? every new charter takes away more money from the existing public schools. that's 400 million dollars, just last year. we can't afford to drain even more money from our kids' schools because they're already losing so much. i'm not just standing up for my own kids; i'm fighting for yours, too.

doug: the time is 5:44. news to go in roxbury, wellesley and boston. erika: first cindy has your forecast. we have heavy rain moving out. and warm in transition. after lunchtime, the skies brighten up. big puddles out there. you can see on the north shore, we have the last of your showers lingering, but they are on the lighter side. we're starting to dry out around metrowest, even boston. but south of town, quincy to randolph looking at showers and the heaviest rain, marshfield to plymouth. some heavier rain, too, on the outermost cape. these showers are shifting

the main cape as well. by 8:00, the rain is done. it's going to dry out quickly. these clouds stick around. you can see that here through about lunchtime or so. from southwest to northeast, we are going to brighten things up this afternoon. once the sun pops out, that's when the temperatures start to respond. it's already mild out the door despite the rain. we're running right around 60. the temperatures are going to hold mostly in the 60's through late morni that cloud cover and notice 1:00 this afternoon through 5:00 p.m., that's when the skies brighten and that's when the temperatures jump up. upper 70's to near 80 degrees, though much, much cooler, new hampshire sea coast through the north shore, we have a frontal boundary that will keep your winds from the northeast and may prevent you from warming up as much as everybody else. the record high in boston is 82. it's 85 in worcester. we will be chasing these records through the afternoon. there's that frontal boundary. it will lift northward late in
