two people charged in connection with loading up a newspaper box in salem. that box was holding lgbt newspapers. ben: i'm ben simmoneau. newscenter 5's john atwater is live in salem with the breaking details, john? reporter: there's been a lot of relief here tonight that police found the suspects. they are accused of putting a bomb inside the newspaper box. this all happened in august. that explosion was caught on surveillance video. owned by the rainbow times, the lgbt newspaper. both suspects, from new hampshire, are facing charges. even though the box has been repeatedly targeted, police say there is not enough evidence to charge them with a hate crime. we just spoke to the editor of the paper, who is thankful someone will be held accountable. >> i think that they need to really start thinking about the impact that their actions have

can affect groups that are already marginalized. reporter: no one was hurt when the bomb exploded, but as you can imagine, it certainly caused 20 of fear in salem -- plenty of fear in salem. the two suspects are facing charges in court friday. john atwater, wcvb newscenter 5 ben:. police just me three arrests after a violent home invasion. the men broke in, demanding money, before hitting a 21-year-old resident over the head with a gun. one suspect remained on the loose for several hours, prompting a large police search. residents were asked to stay inside their home. the high school was also lockdown until he was caught. maria: the family of murdered school teacher, colleen ritzer, is now suing the town of danvers and the school district. ben: but they are not seeking

they have a different goal in mind. newscenter 5's reid lamberty is live in danvers. reporter: the lawsuit driven, not for personal financial gain, but to seek answers to many questions that have arisen as a result of the horrific events culminating in the death of colleen. filed this morning in lawrence superior court, it names the town of danvers, the school district, an architectural firm that designed the high schools security system, and the cleaning company whose employeea steve bartha: it was a tragedy that affected everybody in danvers. we can't imagine what the family went through and continues to go through, and we certainly respect the legal process they are pursuing. reporter: ritzer was a 24-year-old math teacher raped and murdered in a bathroom at danvers high school in october 2013. philip chism, her student, was convicted last december for the crime. he was 14 when it happened. chism was caught on camera following ritzer into the bathroom, and removing a large

among the many questions asked in the lawsuit, with a state of the art security system, why was no one monitoring the cameras that were placed throughout campus? what measures have been taken to correct the deficiencies in the security system? and why was colleen in the academic wing by herself? the school can't comment on pending litigation, but stated, we are committed to continuing colleen ritzer's legacy of kindness and dedication to teaching. some of the major points to the lawsuit is how nobody noticed a bloodsoaked suspects walking around campus for about an hour, and how this brand-new state-of-the-art security system was not enough. i'm reid lamberty, wcvb newscenter 5. ben: commitment 2016, with the polls indicating the election is slipping away for donald trump. he gets one less chance to face

poll numbers, but first, let's go live to vegas. emily riemer is with what candidates need to do tonight. reporter: it's a tall order. it is the final showdown, the less chance for both candidates to reach an audience of millions and try to connect with some of the undecided voters. both candidates know that the stakes are high tonight. clinton arrived last night, after prepping for five the campaign trail. that included a six hour-long session on sunday. trump has continued with his campaign events, but has spent time in new jersey over the weekend with chris christie, going through rapid fire q and a system -- sessions. both trump and clinton have a specific job to do tonight >>. >> if he stays on the issues that helped them not only with the base, but independent voters tired of washington, he wins.

there hasn't been a lot of movement in battleground state polling, except for one notable change in arizona. it's been leaning trump for most of the race until today. the real clear politics average of several tracking polls now shows hillary clinton moving slightly ahead. you can watch tonight's debate live at 9:00, right here on channel 5. and for post-debate coverage on newscenter 5 at 11:00. ben: what a day for mid to late october. summer warmth out there, you can see people took well advantage of the nice weather. was it record-breaking? harvey: not quite for boston, we missed by three degrees. nobody is complaining.

judge today is not only a manipulator, but also a liar.she was surprised to learn how many women suffered. michael shields wore a suit coat and handcuffs as prosecutors laid out the charges, saying he'd seduced at least five women, stealing not only their hearts, but their identities. according to prosecutors, shields typically met the women on line, claimed he was rich, and started dating them. eventually, they say he would ask for the women's social security numbers, claiming he wanted to add them as authorized users on hisar really did was open new accounts in the women's names, then rack up huge bills for meals, vacations, clothing and jewelry. >> the defendant open 17 credit cards, and had made purchases exceeding $350,000. reporter: according to court documents from a previous case, he used a one is named to rent a $5,000 a month apartment in this

he claimed to be a founder of snapchat. i'm credit card applications he said he made up to $21 million a year. but the court says he has no job, and the judge had to appoint an attorney for him. shields pled not guilty. he was locked up on $7,500 cash bail. if he does get out, he is not to leave massachusetts. wcvb newscenter 5. ben: aben: new hampshire man faced a judge today, accused of from a mother and her young daughter. prosecutors say donald malette thought he was communicating with the pair. but it turns out, it was really an undercover agent. investigators say the girls softball coach tried to lure the mother and daughter and did everything he could to ensure the person he was communicating with was legit. > he wanted to see real photos of the person he was speaking to, as well as real photos of the daughter. >> everything about this case is

ben: malette was arrested when police learned he was moving to south carolina. bail was set at $50,000 cash. malette was ordered to have no unsupervised contact with minors including his own children. maria: tragedy in brockton, a young teen with a bright future hit and killed by an suv. tonight his family and friends are grieving newscenter 5's todd kazakiewich spoke with them earlier. he's live in brockton, todd? reporter: it's been a tough day here in brockton. grief counselors have been several schools, as the memorial here on scene continues to grow, and the family continues to mourn. >> he's a very good boy, a very intelligent boy, and very lovely boy. reporter: today, the family of 14-year-old madio djalo is struggling to come to terms with his sudden and tragic death. the brockton teen was struck and killed by this suv tuesday night, while djalo was riding his bike on main street. a family member is seen here, collapsing to the street upon hearing the bad news. the driver stayed on scene and is cooperating with

mayor bill carpenter: the vehicle that struck him was travelling south, but one of the aspects the investigators are continuing to look at is if there may have been some other vehicle that could've influenced what happened without actually making contact. reporter: now, a memorial of flowers and stuffed animals is growing at the scene of the crash, paying tribute to a promising young man who moved here with his family from guinea in 2010. his family says the brockton high school freshman was so successful academically, that he was about to get moved up a grade. madio djalo: he was in ninth grade. they was going to put him in 10th grade. today, there was appointment. >> i saw him yesterday. i was stunned to see him growing so fast, and with all the good news that we're getting from school today, this is what we're getting. it's just too sad.

reporter: this crash remains under investigation. as of now, the driver has not been charged. in brockton, todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. maria: right now, a state trooper is recovering after his cruiser was hit by an alleged impaired driver. it happened near the wellington t-stop in medford just before midnight. the driver, annamaria batista, was arrested at the scene for operating under the influence and appeared in court today. this is her second ou i offense. she's charged with negligent operations, driving without a license, and traffic violations. the trooper was equipment used to rescue a man from a burning home. the construction crew that saved his life. ben: plus, the search right now for the 4 suspects who fired shots outside a california high school injuring several students. maria: then at 5:30. a video you will only be here. it is unbelievable. an emotional reunion after a swimmer was rescued at sea. after being out there for four

announcer: you're watching newscenter 5 at 5:00. maria: in afghanistan today during an attack inside a coalition base in kabul. nato officials say the killer was a man wearing an afghan army uniform. one u.s. service member, and one civilian died of their injuries. both were involved in a nato mission training afghan security forces. the attacker was killed. three other americans were wounded. ben: in san francisco, police are looking for four suspects, possibly connected to yesterday's multiple shooting outside a high school. for students, three boys and a

school was letting out. one of the victims was critically wounded. police say this was not a random shooting, the victims were targeted. >> i question my safety. it could happen to anyone it is still terrifying. i don't want to see this going on. ben: four male suspects were seen running away from the scene. police say they are not students at the high school. maria: ct excavators to free a man from a burning home. take a look, the contruction workers were on a job when they saw the home engulfed in flames. a man was trapped on the second floor. they acted fast. they got there back home and -- backhoe to get him to safety. firefighters arrived shortly after and put out those raging flames. ben: some stunning video from michigan. a drone giving us this glimpse of flood damage in marquette. 10 people had to be rescued yesterday when heavy rain

at least two major highways had to be shut down after water washed out the roads. i'm guessing, we have been talking about rain, heading our way. harvey: that's partly what we are talking about. also, something else. east of the bahamas, north of puerto rico, there is a low pressure area trying to form. it has tropical moisture. if you look at the different tracks, it may move in our direction. about a tropical storm, but it is moisture. ben: invest 99l. harvey: yes, that means it is getting investigated. tomorrow, if it develops, we may fly in there. rain is headed our way. the question is, how much rain? for now, we are still rejoicing

hartford tying their record. it felt beautiful out there. 77 in boston with a westerly wind. it is actually starting to cool off. it has been a long time since we have been 80 degrees this late into the season. still very mild. even though it is cooling down, 70 in albany. northwest that will drag down slightly chillier air from the north into the region. it will be decidedly cooler tomorrow. overnight tonight, boston dropping no lower than the 50's, but cools us getting into the 40's. tomorrow, only about 60 or low 60's around boston. mid-60's to the south and west.

this initial chunk of rain will pass to northern and northwestern new england. most of the daylight hours tomorrow will be dry. late tomorrow, a few periods of rain. friday, overnight friday into saturday. the question is whether the system will enhance the rain. we could wind up with a heavy band in eastern massachusetts or cape cod. i think we need more time to figure it out. in the meantime, clear start tomorrow. increase in clouds through the afternoon.

drizzle is likely tomorrow. friday, the rain will be north and west, but we could get showers. heavier rain would be late friday, or friday night, drawn up from the south. it's a little too early to know exactly where the heavy street will fall saturday, the wind will start increasing and becoming a factor. once we got behind the system, the westerly winds will start to best, especially midday saturday. we will go into a period of breezy conditions for several days, with chilly air. i will even use the word cold into tuesday and wednesday starting out close to freezing, and high temperatures might not
