announcer: now on newscenter 5's eyeopener -- antoinette: flash floods after heavy rain leaving damage in several cities and towns. todd: a tragic recovery mission in boston. new information on the deaths of two workers killed in a flooded trench. antoinette: a massive cyberattack. and the service restored this morning. boston's news leader. good morning. this is newscenter 5's eyeopener. antoinette: good morning to you. thank you so much for joining us. 5:00 on this saturday, october 22. i'm antoinette antonio. todd: i'm todd kazakiewich in for doug. we're here to welcome a new member to the stormteam 5 family. welcome kelly anne cicalese. kelly: it was a really active night as many of us got woken up

issues a major issue. we saw nearly 5 inches of rainfall for areas of worcester county. now we're going to the forecast this morning. you're kicking off saturday with fog out there. rain not as much of a concern, but we move toward your afternoon and evening and wind advisories have already been issued as we're seeing a wind advisory in effect for the entire state of massachusetts, rhode island and connecticut with wind gusts between 40 and 50 miles per hour possible. there's the lightning of last night. that pushed off to the east. tracking is a nice low and the shower activity for this morning until the next round of showers pushes in. that's moving in from the south and west later this afternoon and through this evening as well. and these showers will bring our not only next chance of rain but strong and gusty winds and a big cooldown as we head into the forecast tonight. we'll have a look at that, because you'll be shocked by the chance of snow we're looking to see heading out toward some of the higher elevations.

moved through the area. the heavy rain bringing severe street flooding. you can see cars left stranded. this is a fitchburg. more than 4 inches of rain. todd: including parts of worcester. flooding starting to recede now. city officials warn some streets will remain impabl. -- impassable. high flood waters forcing crews to one man had to stand on his car while waiting to be rescued, one of dozens of rescues. near cambridge street, water levels as high as 8 feet deep. there were 13 rescues from that spot alone. >> i've never seen anything like this anywhere. it was nuts. todd: take a look at this.

crews have recovered most of the damaged potholes. some may remain lifted. city officials saying that flooding may have caused raw sewage to overflow and they're asking residents to treat all standing water as if it may be infected. antoinette: a train stuck for hours. passengers were stopped just north of the haverhill station on friday. the train left boston at 5:00 p.m. and arrived in wells, maine,t we're told a disabled freight train on the tracks prevented other trains from moving on. passengers also tell us a replacement crew was sent to the train after the engineer reached the 12th hour limit. todd: an investigation is underway after a construction site tragedy on boston's south end. the bodies of two men recovered from a flooded trench late friday night. as mary saladna reports, co-workers are devastated this morning.

men who had worked for atlantic drain in roslindale killed when a water main broke. >> i saw a lot of people trying to get the guys out. mary: witnesses say it was chaos as water quickly filled that trench on dartmouth street. >> they had a ladder down there. mary: at least four men were working underground when the water main gave way. only two managed to jump to safe of the ground and people running and panic. mary: witnesses say there was little time. the trench and nearby streets flooded too quickly. >> the water was just gushing, gushing, gushing, and they were screaming that somebody was out there. mary: workers visibly shaken. >> i saw the look on the workers' faces. when they left here, they looked devastated. mary: by late evening, flowers

the hole by the drain. one of the men had started a few weeks ago. the other had worked here for years. >> everyone, everyone, there was not a dry eye in the place. you couldn't meet better guys. i'm going to miss them bad. mary: it's still not clear what caused that water main to break. osha is investigating. i'm mary saladna, wcvb newscenter 5. todd: 5 investigates they were cited for eight different violations earlier this year and fined $20,000 by osha, the occupational safety and health administration. and this isn't the first time atlantic drain services has been in the news. a worker was hurt in march when one of the company's 80,000-pound sewer cleaning trucks fell on him. antoinette: a rape suspect held

angel mateo is charged with kidnapping and raping a girl on her way to school. he denied having sex, then said it was consensual and he thought the girl was 18. >> i just want to say that the victim, although dealing with a very traumatic experience, was crucial in detail and location of the incident. antoinette: the victim helped police identify mateo by a gps ankle bracelet which he was ordered to wear blackmail an ex-girlfriend into sex earlier this year. another woman came forward friday accusing mateo of trying to rape her in may. two incidents under investigation in brockton after a car crashes into a home. the crash happened early friday morning on wilson street. "the enterprise" reports a man told police someone stole his car after gunshots were fired at a local bar. that car then went off the road and crashed into the home. the driver ran off before first

owner about his car, he couldn't explain why he had the keys. no charges have been filed in the shooting or crash. todd: methuen police are searching for the man suspected in a string of recent robberies. police say this man allegedly robbed the methuen cooperative bank with a gun on thursday. he's also a person of interest in a robbery at a wendy's dracut. antoinette: zvrp butting on a great front, juan lopez delgado is putting on a great

5:12. welcome back. internet service restored this morning. todd: a search for answers underway right now after three cyberattacks targeting hundreds of websites. you may have noticed you couldn't get on to some of your favorite websites on friday. hackers are to blame. they targeted dyn, a company in manchester, new hampshire. they targeted twitter and netflix. hackers unleashed, designated distributed denial of service. >> dyn was more than thank you very much. they were just pounded by traffic. >> this code is now readily available for malicious hackers who want to do a similar type of attack. todd: the f.b.i. and department of homeland security are both involved in the investigation. antoinette: a federal judge is ordering the man accused of stealing classified data to remain in custody. prosecutors say harold martin stole thousands of digital and

his attorney, however, says there is no evidence that he shared the information or is a traitor. a judge agreed with prosecutors that martin is a flight risk. he faces up to 10 years in prison. announcer: now your stormteam 5 forecast with meteorologist kelly anne cicalese. todd: how do you like the sound of that? antoinette: stormteam 5, kelly anne cicalese, welcome to your first morning on the weekend eyeopener. we're tracking rain. kelly: i hope i didn't bring it with it. when the better weather comes, i'm also going to take the blame. we saw a good amount of showers last night. now we have a break. we're tracking new showers out of new york at this point. that we're watching for later this afternoon. as far as the rainfall impact for the forecast ahead, this morning looking very low. most of us are dry. we have areas of fog and mist out there.

especially as you head out toward the south shore. in the afternoon, impacts will rise. more showers moving in from new york. it's a medium impact. not quite as heavy as last night. that will slowly decrease as we head into the forecast later tonight and into your sunday as things dry out. your rainfall reports were so impressive out of worcester county last night. that's where we saw many flash flooding reports. downtown worcester itself saw over 5 ihe out into holden, just about 4 inches of rain as well, so that was a very impressive rainfall amount. that was within a 12-hour period. moving outside of worcester county, stowe just below 4 inches of rain as well. moving out toward framingham, just over 3 inches. if you're wondering what downtown boston saw, we saw just over an inch, which was not quite as impressive but still very beneficial. it's a general lull in showers right now.

we have lingering clouds and that fog as well. tracking what's next, showers moving in. this is the backlash of a system that's shifted east at this point. those showers wrapping around, bringing our next chance of rain for later this afternoon, mainly that late afternoon to early evening time period, and as you look closely, you can see some snow starting to develop as well as we head out toward canada, and that's something that will be creeping toward the berkshires later tonight and into tomorrow morning. futurecast looking quiet initially this morning. a lot of the showers our west as that inches east into the afternoon. it just makes its way through western mass and through much of connecticut. it will move through into boston as we head into the mid to late afternoon, and then we're talking about that evening time period as we see that chance of snow making its way into the berkshires. your weather headline does include the chance of mist and fog. nothing compared to last night though. as these showers start to come

evening winds. wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour, not completely out of the question. your seven-day forecast is looking blustery as we head into your sunday. let's take a look at those winds, because they will start to get really strong. in fact, we're talking about wind gusts between 35 and 40 miles an hour heading toward the cape. that will remain strong into the forecast, heading into monday as well. the rest of your seven-day is looking relatively quiet. the start next woke, we have sunshine breaking chilly. we're actually talking about temperatures topping out in the 40's next tuesday. and we're looking to stay cool through much of next week as well. antoinette: kelly anne bringing the cold and rain with her. 5:17. looking at some of the stories happening right now. todd: firefighters working to get control of a massive fire at a cardboard recycling city

you can see black smoke filling the sky. flames jumped nearby railroad tracks setting fire to a set of tracks. no one was hurt, but air quality in the area is being tested. no word yet on what caused that fire. a chemical spill at a kansas distilling plant could be responsible for releasing toxic fumes. two chemicals were combined. a hundred people needed medical attention. dozens of homes, three s evacuated. the cloud dissipated within a couple of hours. two people remain hospitalized. antoinette: health insurer sig cigna is making it hard to -- the move follows criticism that that paperwork caused unnecessary delays in treatment. there's a mystery unfolding on the surface of mars.

kelly: it's as warm as it's going to get. as we move into downtown boston, 63 degrees. plymouth 66. not quite as warm as we move inland where we are seeing the 40's heading into western mass. head of the charles is not going to be a perfect forecast heading out on the charles river as we do see temperatures in the upper 50's, lower for this afternoon and also some gusty winds as well. in fact, winds are going to gust up to near 40 miles per hour as we head into the forecast tonight. it's all about that rainfall report. it was very impressive last night. todd and antoinette, it won't be as impressive today. antoinette: we'll take what we can get. a surprise visitor to the white house. todd: comedian bill murray giving the press corps something else to talk about. a lifelong cubs fan decked out

the candidates he's supporting and his criticism of the democratic party. announcer: you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning. this is newscenter 5's eyeopener. todd: 5:30 on this kind of wet saturday morning. good morning. good to have you with us. i'm todd kazakiewich in for doug. antoinette: i'm antoinette antonio. we are welcoming meteorologist kelly anne cicalese this morning bringing some rain. were you up all night? this being your first day on the thinking about work. and then the downpours. todd: and the alert on your phone ringing. kelly: the sky was lighting up with thunder and lightning. i'm excited to be here. i love it. you know, we have good news for today. although we have new showers moving in, it's not going to be quite as strong as what we saw last night. so if you're heading out to events today, we have the head of the charles, you can head out. it's not going to be a perfect day by any means, but it's not

we saw last night. now, as we head into the afternoon, we do have some concerns. winds are going to really start to strengthen. we have wind varieadvisories foh of our region. we'll see gusts between 40 and 50 miles an hour. and that is something that's not only a concern for tonight but also as we head into your sunday, something to keep in mind for the second day of the event of the head of the charles. we have fog not so much in downtown boston. heading toward the south shore, we see visibility reduced into plymouth and the case as well. satellite/radar imagery impressive with downpours and lightning that pushed through. now for this morning, we do see a nice little lull as we have dry air in place, but it won't last long. antoinette and todd, i'll have a look at the next batch of showers moving in later this afternoon. todd: a powerful line of thunderstorms moving through the area last night, as we were

several towns experiencing flash flooding. antoinette: worcester one of the areas hardest hit. the rain is done for right now, as kelly anne mentioned, and floodwaters have started to recede, but some roads remain impassable. murray ave completely under water. city officials reminding us it is never safe to drive through water when you don't know how levels rose up to car windows. one driver right there forced to stand on top of his car while waiting to be rescued, one of dozens of rescues in the area. crews working through the night attempting to clear out storm drains as well. todd: let's show you video from fitchburg. several cars stranded there as streets filled with water. we saw people pushing cars that got stuck trying to get them to a dry spot. we were also told that hundreds

several roads are closed in that town overnight. antoinette: the flooding extending up to the merrimack valley as well. this is haverhill, a car stranded in water under a railroad bridge. todd: and in manchester, new hampshire, some roads under as much as a foot of water. several cars were partially under water. neighbors and firefighters worked to clear storm drains in an effort to allow floodwaters to recede. one man needed a tow after he got caught in the high water levels. antoinette: right now, an investigation is underway after flooded trench on dartmouth street. it happened yesterday at a construction site in boston's south end. a water main gave way while the men were working in the flooded trench. the workers have not yet been identified. osha and the d.a.'s office are investigating. dartmouth street is a major artery in the south end, so closing it off creates numerous problems. todd: until that stretch of road is reopened, expect major tie-ups in that neighborhood. city officials say it could be days before the street reopens.

adjusting last night. one restaurant was forced to stop deliveries because the process was taking too long. but many say they're more concerned about the victims and families affected by there tragedy. >> i give so much credit to blue collar workers. i feel terrible about what happened. i feel so sorry for the people involved. todd: police are asking drivers to continue to avoid that area if possible. antoinette: commitment 2016 -- new this morning, police in new york investigating a white powdery substance hillary clinton's campaign headquarters. people evacuated the office after workers found that envelope friday night. officers say the mail was first brought to the midtown manhattan office but then transferred to the brooklyn headquarters. the nypd is testing the substance. meanwhile, clinton campaigned in ohio, another swing state, where the polls show that the two candidates are tied. she attacked donald trump for his suggestion that he might not

>> the peaceful transition of power is one of the things that sets us apart. whether or not you support me or you support my opponent, together, we must support american democracy. antoinette: clinton also blasted trump for the use of chinese steel in some of his buildings, saying that he needs to answer to ohio steelworkers who are filing for unemployment. todd: as for donald trump, he's doubling down on plans to key battleground states. in pennsylvania friday night, trump laid out his plan to jail repeat offenders. >> -- illegally reenter the country after previously being deported, they won't come back. todd: trump remains in pennsylvania today. that's to give a speech in gettysburg.

support of donald trump. schilling wants to challenge massachusetts senator elizabeth warren in 2018 but he's not sure yet his family is onboard with that decision. he ripped the democratic party. he says it is anti-israel. >> i don't understand, and maybe this is the amateur non-politician in me. i don't understand how people of jewish faith can back the democratic party which over the last 50 years has been so clearly antra the democratic party is allied with israel only because we have agreements that make them have to be. todd: he will be in new hampshire sunday. antoinette: dover, new hampshire's football team was short-handed after coaches were caught drinking and fired. the superintendent says the volunteer and assistant coaches drank alcohol on duty traveling back to dover high after a game in keene on saturday.

coach nor students were involved in any way. >> ultimately, when we talk about student-athletes, we hold them to a high standard, because they represent our school. and we are working to promote healthy behavior, healthy lifestyle, good decisions. so the adults who work with our students and student-athletes need to be held to a high standard as well. antoinette: the superintendent says several people, including the athletic director, are filling in for killing five teenagers in a wrong way crash in vermont is now in jail. steven bourgoin is in the hospital being treated for his own serious injuries. prosecutors say bourgoin crashed into the teens' car in williston two weeks ago. police say he stole a police car in scene and crashed into seven more vehicles. >> the citgo sign is cold. it purchased from boston

i just want what's best for my kids. when i hear arguments that massachusetts needs more charter schools, i think: what about the students in all of our schools? every new charter takes away more money from the existing public schools. that's 400 million dollars, just last year. we can't afford to drain even more money from our kids' schools because they're already losing so much. i'm not just standing up for my own kids; i'm fighting for yours, too.

evacuate. some didn't make it out in time prompting helicopter rescues. residents now hoping the waters will start receding so they can get in to clean up. >> it happened fast. there was no warning. so we went -- when i left, i didn't think it was going to be that bad. it was a just in case kind of thing. when we got back with the two trucks, it was already -- woe knew we had to get everything out as fast as we forced to close. todd: a water emergency in connecticut as drought conditions continue. the mayor of bristol is taking it a step further, warning residents if they abuse the water system, their water will be turned off and they will have to pay to turn it back on. extreme weather could be putting your favorite bottle of wine at risk. the international organization of vine and wine is blaming harsh weather for one of the worst years of production in nearly a century.

the organization says storms are longer and more frequent because of global warming. australia, the u.s. and spain are, however, expected to have increased production, offsetting some of that damage. antoinette: oh, the wine and then the apple picking is done for the season in a lot of places. todd: and cranberries. the harvest is so bad, they have to do it by hand. antoinette: what are we going to eat and drink, guys? kelly: the wine deal is a big we'll have to get through. more cold air is moving our way for next week. we'll talk about temperatures not able to get above freezing next week. so, yeah, very cold. antoinette: kelly anne, how are you going to fare coming from west virginia? kelly: i thought i'd bring warm air with me, but it doesn't look to be the case. antoinette: keep working on it. kelly: we're talking about rainfall which was impressive last night. as we head to the forecast today, a few showers expected, but nothing compared to the intensity of what we did see

strong thunderstorms expected yesterday, but not expected today. on the flip side, what we're going to see are strong and gusty winds move through with this next band of showers as well and more so later tonight into tomorrow as those showers start to exit outside of our region. temperatures for today, we're starting off very warm today. as these showers move through, you'll notice temperatures will start to slowly fall. in fact, it's a very strange temperature outlook as we look to see t achieved early this morning. low pressure and a cold front, that moved through yesterday bringing those showers in and, of course, strong thunderstorms and flooding issues. now we're seeing the back end of this system bringing showers from york trying to bring it to our area. it's a lull as you're heading out this morning. we have fog out there and even some mist. don't let it fool you. we have more showers heading our way for later this afternoon. temperatures right now as warm as it's going to get. we have 63 in downtown boston

through much of our region. it's almost feeling tropical this early saturday morning. that's the case especially heading down toward the cape as well as we do see a few upper 60's. 40's heading inland. this is the kind of air that won't be making its way to our region until later tonight and into the forecast tomorrow. so those temperatures are going to stay nice and warm for this morning and also for early this afternoon before the next band of rain approaches. 63 in boston as we hea t noon. as we move into the late afternoon, as showers move in and for early this evening, they're pushing from the west. you can see how showers cool temperatures down to the 40's. worcester county 47 this evening. that cool air will push its way onto the coast as well as we fall into the 40's for much of the coast for late tonight and into tomorrow morning. it's going to be a huge cooldown. in fact, we're talking about the chance of some snow even trying to wrap in as we head out toward the adirondacks and the

kelly: after the downpours of last night, we're seeing warm and muggy conditions heading out the door this early saturday morning, many holding onto the 60's. downtown boston at 63. region, we're into the mid 60's in plymouth. moving through the forecast ahead, a few showers are expected. nothing compared to the downpours of last night. but they are moving in from new york, and that will be bringing us some gusty winds for later this afternoon and evening. and also a huge cooldown. seeing highs this morning and falling progressively into the late afternoon.

todd: the joke normally goes why did the chicken cross the road. but what about when an emu crosses the road? antoinette: i'm guessing the answer's the same. to get to the other side. todd: probably. antoinette: okay. well, that was exactly the case in arizona. this emu ended up on the highway, caught on camera. it eventually crossed the road and got to the other side, ended up on the road's shoulder. an arizona agriculture official was able to no idea how the emu got to the road but it got to the other side. todd: which came first, the emu -- let's move on. antoinette: finding a penny is lucky. todd: a financial company has hidden a penny in 10 cities across the country. this one wort a thousand dollars. the company wants to remind everyone that every cent is worth saving.
