announcer: now on newscenter 5 eyeopener -- antoinette: a mystery in new hampshire this morning. a teenage boy is missing. how police think the weather may have played a role in his disappearance. todd: clean-up underway after flash flooding wreaks havoc on parts of the state. assessing the damage that could lead to long-term problems. antoinette: family problems after a trench tragedy. where the boston's south end stands right now. announcer: you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning. this is newscenter 5's eyeopener. antoinette: and a good morning to you. it is 5:00 on this sunday, october 23. i'm antoinette antonio. todd: good morning. i'm todd kazakiewich in for doug this morning. no rain today. but certainly some chilly winds. meteorologist kelly ann cicalese is joining us. we felt those winds driving in.

it was a huge change from yesterday morning where we saw those warm and muggy conditions. that's just not the case heading out this early sunday morning. we have temperatures now falling into the 40's, and we also have some very strong winds out there as well. we'll take a look at what's going on as you're heading out this early sunday. we do have lingering light drizzle right now making its way through providence and barely touching the south coast. we are tracking cool air wrapping in. that's the b next workweek as well. this is wrapping in behind that system that pushed through this weekend. this is the same system that brought that snowfall that we saw toward some of the higher elevations. right now, wind gusts already becoming rather impressive. we're seeing wind gusts up to 37 miles per hour in worcester and at this point, todd and antoinette, we have a wind advisory in effect. antoinette: investigators are

a nashua teenager. todd: clues suggest this weekend's stormy weather may be to blame for a potential tragedy. the eye's juli mcdonald explains. >> you get a lot of people that care about you. juli: a frantic message from family members who love jacob goulet. he left a friend's house friday night and never came home. >> last camera view that saw him walking, he actuallyap fell into a manhole and was swept into the river. juli: a passerby reported an open storm drain near main and water street. personal belongings but no i.d. was seen behind it. jacob is seen in video holding those items before he disappeared. >> they left a football home. he was headed home. he lives around the corner, two minutes from his house. juli: now they're scouring the

well as the storm drain system in that area. >> we walked every drain hole. juli: jacob's family conducting their own searching, never giving up hope. >> just hope maybe he might have fell in and he's hanging on. maybe he's too cold to yell. maybe we'll see him, hear him. can't stop trying, you know. juli: goulet ace white male, 5'8" and weighing 200 pounds, black hair, blue eyes. in the photo you on friday night. nashua police plan to release and update at noontime. stay with newscenter 5 as we bring you that. in nashua, new hampshire, juli mcdonald, wcvb newscenter 5. antoinette: people in worcester are cleaning up after friday night's torrential downpours. there was 5 inches of rain. drainage systems backed up in several neighborhoods. the city experienced major

>> because of the drought we're in, we were actually looking forward to some rainfall. we just didn't want it all at once. >> we're just trying to take stock today of where we're at and what the problems are immediately and then if we're going to have any long-term problems. antoinette: roads made impassable by the flooding have now reopened. todd: police make an arrest in connection with an attack on an mbta bus driver. the incident happened yesterday on the bus along the burlington mall route. the driver is recovering from minor injuries and i police have not revealed the possible motive for the assault. antoinette: this morning, one of the boston police officers shot last week in east boston is out of the hospital. officer matthew morris was discharged from mgh yesterday. bpd says he's continuing his treatment for his injuries at spaulding rehab. the other officer who was injured, richard cintolo, was released from the hospital last week. the suspect in the shootout on gladstone street was killed.

more about the workers killed in a trench collapse in boston's south end. the two men trapped after a pipe burst friday and the trench filled with water. this morning a memorial is growing for 47-year-old robert higgins and 53-year-old kelvin mattocks. the two worked for atlantic drainage. >> his death was tragic. and from what we've heard should not have happened. todd: 5 investis atlantic drain services. the company was cited for eight different violations earlier this year and was fined $20,000 by osha. dartmouth street from warren to tremont streets is closed during the investigation. antoinette: a murder investigation in cape cod after a double stabbing. this happened early saturday morning at a house on beth lane in hyannis. police say when first responders

26-year-old thomas russell was announced dead at the scene. the other victim is hospitalized in critical condition. was person was taken into custody on a probation violation. this man arrested and charged with dui after police say he crashed into an east bridgewater police cruiser. he was taken to the hospital for treatment. this happened saturday on route 18. 24-year-old ryan macaluso of burlington will face a judge surrounding the deaths of a bicyclist in worcester. ronald corey apparently crashed into the back of a parked tow truck. he was found unconscious and suffering from serious injuries. the tow truck was parked in the bike lane on southbridge street. that crash is under investigation. a new cow has been cited at a notoriously squalid farm in westport.

conditions at the farm have not improved. however, they cannot intervene as there is no court order banning the owner from having animals on the property. antoinette: today residents in a barrington, rhode island, neighborhood will walk in a yoga pants parade. the parade was planned in reaction to a recent newspaper editorial. in it the man says he has seen enough asking women to, quote, put away the yoga pants. hundreds plan to take part in the by the writer's home. the parade is scheduled to kick off at 2:00. i support yoga pants. just sayin'. todd: they look very comfortable. that's all i'm going to say. antoinette: the population of a seasonal pest is on the rise. todd: the caterpillars making people itch and what experts say may be to blame for the population explosion. also, a mega media deal steps away from closing.

nearly 2 feet of water pooled in one area, causing problems for people living nearby. >> all of a sudden, it was coming through the -- up through the floor and flooding up to our ankles. the car was, um -- it was over the tires. it was just people canoeing and a nightmare. >> one gal down the street who we had to take out through the window so the water didn't get into her apartment. todd: the high water also damaged several c and the heavy rain also flooded streets in portland, maine, as you can see here. the portland jetport reported nearly 4 inches of rain after friday night's downpour. no serious damage has been reported, and most of the water has already receded. antoinette: a population explosion in maine for a seasonal pest. brain tailed moth caterpillars are -- not only are they eating every leaf in sight. they're making people itch.

rash like poison ivy. they're blamed for defoliating 60,000 trees this fall, significantly more than last year, and the dry weather may be to blame. okay, guys. gotta send out a warning. video might be disturbing for some. a wet and rainy day for most of us yesterday, but, you know, some areas saw, yes, snow. these pictures from the national weather service showing the flakes out there in western . can i look now? todd: yes. antoinette: is it safe? is it safe? todd: so we're not too far away. kelly ann: this is right in the berkshires. we saw snowfall. there were a few flakes in the northern hills of worcester county as well. not too far from home we are seeing the first signs of snow. antoinette: kelly ann, first you bring the rain. then you bring the snow. kelly ann: yeah, you know, this is not a good start. sorry. i apologize in advance. we do see some clearing for today. some good news there.

these winds. that's going to be a big problem for today. winds are rather strong already for this morning. we have wind advisories that have been issued that went into effect last night and continue through much of the day today as we do see the possibility of wind gusts near 40 miles per hour, especially as we move toward some of those higher elevations and toward the cape and islands. satellite and radar imagery is showing clearing as we see showers starting to shift toward our east. signs of drizzle important providence and the south shore, but we're not expect much rainfall this morning as things are looking to continue to dry out as we head into your afternoon. low pressure is in place off to our north in canada and really what this is doing, it's helping to bring in that cool air from canada rushing right into our region. you're going to feel that cooldown if you're heading out this morning. we're in the 40's. we also have the breezy conditions as well. and as this continues to wrap around, we'll stay in those

start of the workweek as well. temperatures right now mainly in the 40's. we have downtown boston at 47 degrees. 40 as we stretch inland as well. a few 30's as we move into western mass. at this point, most of us holding onto that 40-degree mark and we'll be warming up progressively. clouds are rather thick, but as we move toward the afternoon, those clouds slowly clear. we're brightening up with beautiful sunshine later this afternoon a to upper 50's with wind gusts 30 miles an hour. futurecast showing things drying now as we move into the forecast this morning. clouds will be stubborn initially, but by this afternoon, we do see that sun break out. staying in the sunshine for much of today. bring those evening plans outdoors. just keep in mind those winds will be strong.

weight on that's napkins if you're eating outdoors. tomorrowa new chance bringing a chance of rain just south of the pike for tomorrow morning's commute. as we head to the afternoon, showers will shift to our south and east as we dry out heading into your monday afternoon. so here's that seven-day forecast. and at first we are seeing temperatures in the 50's as we start off your workweek. things are going to get progressively cooler. even as we inch toward tuesday, we see cool a near frieezing nights and coole days as well. by late in the week, we see clouds return. shower chances as we inch toward friday. and that is going to be joined by some warmer air. eventually as we inch toward next weekend, we do have some good news. those temperatures in the lower 50's. we'll start to inch back to near 60 degrees. todd: kelly ann, thank you. 60 degrees sounds pretty good. antoinette: we'll take it.

checking some of the other stories happening right now -- antoinette: a shootout between a deputy constable and a suspect in texas is under investigation. houston police say the constable was off-duty when he got into an argument with an acquaintance who allegedly tried to rob him. during the struggle, the suspect hit the deputy constable in the head with a gun, demanded money and began shooting. the deputy then returned fire. both are recovering from gunshot wounds this morning. todd: a mega media step closer to closing. at&t says it is buying time warner, the announcement happening after days of rumors. at&t will use its infrastructure to deliver time warner content. federal regulators will have the final say on whether that deal goes through. antoinette: security officials in yemen say a saudi-led coalition has launched a series of air strikes in its capital. the strikes come just after 72

it expired. the attacks targeted military buildings belonging to rebels fighting the internationally recognized government. todd: proceed sess over the construction of the dakota access oil pipeline lead to arrests in north dakota. police say tensions escalated when they tried to move 300 demonstrators off private property. sheriff's deputies used pepper spray to break up the crowd. more than 80 people are now facing charges. announcer: now here's brogadir with sportscenter 5 powered by xfinity. josh: bears on ice trying to finally beat the canadiens at home and win their third straight game overall. but they'd have to do without tuukka rask. he didn't dress for the game and is day to day. backup anton khudobin faced 29 shots. here's one he couldn't stop. after a scoreless first period, brendan gallagher gets the best of him. 1-0 habs in the second. then ryan spooner, a healthy scratch in the home opener on

still lingering about, especially as you move into some of our southern counties. but here's a look at what's going on overhead. you can see the overall trend for this morning is for us to dry out as showers progressively push off to our east. clouds are hanging about, though. we have a mostly cloudy sky right now. that is going to slowly clear for later this afternoon. eventually, that sunshine will be breaking out. now, we do see some snowfall still lingering. this is just to our north as we hampshire and vermont as well. not so much impacting us locally, but we're feeling that cool air wrapping in and also gusty winds as well. wind advisories have beenish shrewd. that's in effect for -- issued. that's in effect until 6:00 this evening. we have winds higher as you move down to the cape and islands. those are the kind of winds that make things feel quite a bit

our forecast over the next 12 hours are going to show that sun breaking through as we head into the afternoon. temperatures jumping into the 50's. as we head into the forecast tonight, todd, things will cool down yet again. todd: kelly ann, thank you. right now police in nashua, new hampshire, fear that a missing teenager may have fallen into an open storm drain. 16-year-old jacob goulet was last seen walking home from a friend's house storm. he was caught on surveillance camera near that area and some of his belongings were found nearby. antoinette: residents in worcester are mopping up after this weekend's flooding rain. the storm dumped more than 4 inches of rain. several cars and basements were flooded from the high water that raced through the streets. todd: safety officials are still searching for answers after the deaths of two workers killed in a flooded trench. 47-year-old robert higgins and 53-year-old kelvin mattocks died

consent years ago. todd: early voting begins in massachusetts on monday. this is the first time early voting has been allowed in the state. voters can cast an early ballot by mail or in person in most cities. 36 other states also offer early voting. the early voting this year outpaces the 2012 election. nearly 40% of all ballots will be cast before election day. kaine reacts to the threat from wikileaks, the site claiming it has a surprise for him. antoinette: his running mate sat down to talk about the democrats' chance to take control of congress. david bienick has the exclusive interview. david: in the basement of a downtown hotel, tim kaine gave

about it. david: wikileaks tweeted it has a surprise in store for kaine and democratic national committee chairwoman donna brazile. >> i think the surprise for wikileaks is how hard they're trying to influence an election with russia. david: kaine is sounding more and more confident. he recently hired his own transition director. but he doesn't think it's likely democrats willin of congress. >> to get things done in the senate, we're going to need to have republican votes. i think the likelihood is to get things in the house we'll need republican votes. david: if democrats and republicans split control of the senate with 50 seats each, the constitution gives the tie-breaking vote to the vice president. would you vote how tim kaine wants to vote or how much would you vote the way hillary clinton wants you to vote?

i'm going to vote my informed conscience is the way i've voted. david: with five more states set to vote on whether to legalize marijuana, kaine favors a hands-off approach. >> this is not a subject i've talked at length to secretary clinton about. i think letting states be kind of laboratories of policy on this and then seeing how it goes is not all bad. david: kaine knows one thing on the virginia coast with his family celebrating the end of the campaign, win or lose. in boston, david bienick, wcvb newscenter 5. antoinette: a group of trump supporters, including former red sox ace curt schilling, taking into city hall plaza in boston. schilling was questioned about encouraging some people not to vote. >> if you're not going to be informed, then i don't think you

definitely seeing the first flakes of the season. this is something we also saw moving into western massachusetts as well. we did see those cooler conditions push in last night. some snow that fell didn't stick, but definitely pushed through the berkshires late last night. breezy and cool conditions bringing snow to vermont and new hampshire. at this point, the rain is starting to push off the coastment you can see that as we move just to our east. thosho affecting some of the cape and moving out toward the southcoast. main concern are those winds. we're seeing occasional wind gusts. could even see gusts near 45 miles an hour for later this afternoon. those clouds are in place as well. sun will be breaking out later today. although the temperatures are cool and in the 40's right now, it's downtown 47 for boston and

as we head into the afternoon with the sun breaking out, woe will be jumping into the 50's. it's a mild high of 56 in boston. move out toward the cape, 57 degrees expected. as we move inland, it is not a warm day. gusty winds is the main thing for today. the forecast tonight, we're tracking another cold front pushing through for the overnight hours and into your monday morning. not as far as temperature, but there is the chance for showers to creep through. that's something that will be pushing through especially as we move through connecticut and into rhode island and just south of the mass pike. so that's going to be moving through for the morning commute likely pushing out of the way as we head into the afternoon. we're clearing as we head into tomorrow evening, but those cool conditions are still in place as we see that northwesterly breeze pushing in for our area. we have wind advisories in effect for our region.

you can see winds are going to be strong. we have wind gusts near 19 miles per hour as we inch toward 10:30 this morning moving into the afternoon. that's when we'll see occasional wind gusts near 30, 35 miles an hour. bill impact as far as the wind. the sun will break out, but because of those winds, it is still going to feel blustery out there. your forecast tomorrow, we have concerns for that rain moving through. breezy as we head into tuesday. we do see winds pushi overhead. that dip in the jet stream keeping things very cool here locally. the rest of your seven-day looking to stay cool into wednesday as well. temperatures staying below freezing, in fact, as we move into those overnight lows. so that's where we do see the likelihood of some frost developing through much of the middle of next week. the good news, by late portion next week, todd and antoinette, we will warm up again. todd: all right, kelly ann. thank you. 5:48. here's a look at other stories

closer to taking over mosul. iraqi army has moved into a town 12 miles from the large city. the move comes the day after isis militants stormed into kirkuk. the fighting killed at least 80 people. isis has heavily mined the paths to mosul forcing the iraqi army to contend with roadside bombs and snipers as they move closer to the city. a rally for justice in minnesota demonstrators protested after a pedestrian was detained by police for walking in the street last week. police say the man was not cooperating after being cited for jaywalking. that citation was later dismissed. organizers say the march was also in response to the several police shooting deaths around the country. todd: the mexican government is cracking down on a drawing cartel that ambushed a military convoy. five were killed in the attack. officials say more than 1,000
