they are breaking windows and squeezing through openings in doors the rain we understand overheated and start it is smoking. firefighters are on the scene. big delays on the orange line as you can expect through the back bay area. also delays on the commuter rail service at back bay. here's some video inside the train. all commuter rail service is suspended. let's go to ed with the breaking details. >> you've been showing the video. let's go through it one more time. we can bring you up to speed on a couple of things. >> from the scene, people were coughing like crazy. you can see the smoke. obviously, they would be coughing like crazy and notice that the doors to the trains can't open. the engine overheated. that created the smoke. that created the chaos. look, stepping out of the window. people at this time of day, trains are filled with people so as they are filled everyone is trying to help as many people as they can get out. this person who is shooting the video managed to shoot it as he

the commute rail we understand is running through the station slowly. isn't stopping but it's going through the station. they are now working to move the train so the orange line can resume but the service has been suspended. given the time of day that could certainly affect the situation, for the commute on the way home. video from inside train. reporting life from the scene. right now, jc and ben, back to you. >> we'll turn it over to talk about the cold, changes and wet weather moving in. harv: we have one more cold night ahead. freeze warnings for eastern and southeastern massachusetts, including the cape. there is a band of rain moving through the midwest but it does have some snow with it as well. and as that moves east into the cold air that's established, in western massachusetts, there is likely to be appeared of snow especially in the berkshires.

it goes. thickening clouds tomorrow morning and then the snow breaks out in the berkshires around lunch time or early to mid afternoon. continuing into the late afternoon there. right around the evening commute is when rain starts moving into our area. eventually we're going to get heavy rain out of this. the snow that does fall, berkshires could get a small accumulation. we'll talk more about the rain, wind and what follows coming up. >> a new hampshire homeowner takes a shot at a man trying to break into his house and tonight police are still looking for the suspect. the suspect wasn't hit, he ran off toward the woods and is still on the loose. poli a to look for the suspect who they say tried to force his way in. the unidentified owner pulled out a weapon and fired a shot. neighbors heard the gunfire and called police. >> there was an intruder in the home, a confrontation between the homeowner and an intruder. no one was hit and the intruder ran off into the woods and we're still searching the area.

glimpse of the suspect a few minutes later but he got away. they are still looking for him. >> fire investigators are looking for the cause of a fire that killed a new hampshire resident. the fire started after midnight and by the time crews got there the home was engulfed in flames and part of the roof had collapsed. the victim hasn't been identified but neighbors say the woman lived alone. investigators do not think the fire was intentionally set. >> right now, a man is recovering after plummeting through a concrete floor in his home. here's the rush to pull concrete dangled overhead. >> the man who was rescued is at hole recovering and he's doing okay. he didn't want to go on camera but his wife said he does want to express his gratitude to the people who saved him. >> it wasn't what firefighters expected when they heard the call for a porch collapse. >> it's kind of bizarre actually, because a concrete floor, you would imagine that underneath the concrete floor

wasn't. it was just a big cavern. >> down below a man trapped with chunks of concrete surrounding him, after the cement floor of his screened in porch gave way. >> that's what it was like. it was dark and wet. and, you know, no lighting or no exit. >> thankfully the man had his cell phone and was able to call 911. firefighters had to act fast, with hundreds of pounds of unstable concrete overhead. >> we're making sure that we did d didn't fall on top of them. >> using a ladder and hope they pull them out in a rescue basket. the entire operation talking about 20 minutes. now the big question, why was that underground space there in the first place? >> they certainly didn't know it was that deep underneath. i don't think anyone would have expected that to be underneath there. >> the building inspector was also called out during the rescue. they are trying to figure out how and why all of this happened.

not huge changes. in the 20s and 30s early this morning. 40s to around 50. that's the best we can do today. it's already dropped back to 39. otherwise, most other places are in the 40s now. here's where we're headed tonight and one more time, we do have some frost advisories and freeze warnings for eastern massachusetts. tomorrow's high temperatures will be deceiving. they won't be reached until late in the day and at night. the temperatures actually will be rising into tomorrow night but it will chilly. there is the freeze warning that i talked about and the frost advisory. right along the shoreline it kind of depends on the wind direction. if it goes a little north-northeast, then a little bit of ocean cloudiness will come in and modify the air a little and won't be quite as cold. it's a possibility of frost and the freeze slightly inland. >> other areas further inland will surely have a freeze but they have already had it. not the first one to be sure. >> watching the system going through the midwest, that's snow in parts of michigan.

entire system is going to slide eastward and move right across southern new england late tomorrow, tomorrow night, and first thing friday. it looks like it will be a significant storm in terms of the amounts of precipitation. so here's how it goes. some ocean clouds will try to back in late tonight or tomorrow right along the shoreline so there could be some cloud, maybe a spritz of air. further inland, increasing clouds tomorrow. here comes the snow for the berkshires. remember, they are further west, ay elevation. all of that is necessary to produce snow. maybe even into the worcester hills of new hampshire it could start as snow during the course of tomorrow afternoon. then we'll see that snow area tomorrow night lift northward. mountains in new hampshire, mountains of vermont, will get some snow and a mix or change. the mountains of maine will score big and we'll get a good dose of rain overnight tomorrow night is when the heaviest rain

the evening commute. it will be winding down during the morning commute on friday, but there will have been a lot of rain overnight thursday night. a blustery day on friday. we don't look for complete clearing. lots of clouds and a few light showers could be left over. you can see one of our computer models showing widespread. average or more, also showing there could be snow accumulation and here's what i'm talking about in the mountains of maine. that's some six to 12 inches of snow out of this storm. letter check it out for the next seven days. it's a stormy period from late tomorrow into early friday. it also is going to become very windy tomorrow night especially on the cape and it will be a windy day on friday. saturday, starts out with sun. may end with a brief spritz. that's it and sunday looks like the skies will clear. much more coming up at 6:00. i'm meteorologist harvey leonard. >> thank you, your health

right now we know what sparked all of this. >> live right there at the scene. >> the fire units have just started to clear the scene but they are confirming that the incident here started when a motor on an orange inbound train caught fire. the sparks also triggering fire, trash fire on the rails. fire and police units, where a passenger described a pretty chaotic scene as both the train and the station filled up with cell phone video from passengers shows that stalled train with the doors jammed shut. you can see passengers kicking at the windows. then helping each other to climb out of the cars, which at rush-hour were jammed packed. passengers tried to hit the emergency buttons but the doors remained shut. the engineer did that on purpose because half of the station was out of the station. >> this was done for safety. eventually the conductor on-board was able to manually
