a cold start. fortunately, there isn't as much winds this morning as we had yesterday. the trajectory of the winds has generated ocean effects. showers on the cape this morning working from north to south. we've got clouds moving in for now, but to the west you can see the system. this is going to bring in rain and snow across new england today. locally, it's primarily rain coming a.m. as the temperatures creep out of the 30s. we're in the 40s this afternoon as the clouds thicken up. we've got rain on the way. by later this morning there may be a couple of showers and drizzle along the coastline. but through lunchtime it is mainly dry. we've got that rain coming in as we head toward the evening commute and it will start as a few flakes of snow through the worcester hills.

questions. why did this happen? and how the t responded. look at some of the video from passengers that shows the confusion and chaos, smoke filling the station in the orange line train as it pulled away from the back bay station just before 5:00 last night. passengers kicked out and pushed out windows to escape. this morning we know an overheated motor caught fire, and that triggered a trash fire on the rails, which caused all the smoke. one woman chef knife to get out of the train. >> and i attached it to my elbow like so and into the window. >> people naturally started to scream for help and tried to pry the doors open. they just wouldn't budge. >> the mbta police say the operator made the right decision not to open those doors because people would have jumped out onto the live third rail. the t says the operator was

announcement. so many of the passengers took matters into their own hands. now, three people were taken to the hospital, but no one was seriously hurt. and now mechanics are trying to figure out exactly why that motor overheated. live at back bay station this morning, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. >> ahead at 5:00 this morning, how city leaders in boston are responding to that incident and what they are suggesting to make sure this does not happen again. >> other stories we're following the murder of her husband in boston. police say karen edwards, who spent weekends with her husband at a home in roxbury, stabbed to death collin edwards earlier this month. she underwent a competency evaluation ahead of this hearing today. right now boston police are investigating after an s.u.v. slammed into a home. the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is on beacon hill where we are getting new information

antoinette? >> that driver along with the passenger are both recovering this morning and right now you can see that the building here at the corner of myrtle and grove street on beacon hill is boarded up. the driver, jean claude caillot's wife confirmed he was driving for uber and tells us he is home from the hospital. caillot and his passenger were treated for injuries. the s.u.v. barrelling down grove street into the building, sending bricks tumbling down. stunned believe no one was killed. >> i heard a boom. i see this car come flying up the street. i'm surprised they survived, because they was going fast. >> a woman who lives in the home was scene look -- seen looking at the hole in her kitchen. no one inside was hurt. a resident in the building said

i just want what's best for my kids. when i hear arguments that massachusetts needs more charter schools, i think: what about the students in all of our schools? every new charter takes away more money from the existing public schools. that's 400 million dollars, just last year. we can't afford to drain even more money because they're already losing so much. i'm not just standing up for my own kids; i'm fighting for yours, too. please join me in voting no on question 2. >> 31 >> yeah. >> on the calendar.

there could be maybe 12 inches of snow in the mountains of western maine from this system. around here it is primarily a rain event. showers on the cape. otherwise, things fairly quiet. 31 in worcester, 35 boston. along the coastline we have the frost advisory up until 9:00 a.m. cold stuff today. temperatures recor 40s late in the day. notice by 8:00 a.m. clouds and maybe patches of drizzle prevalent along the coastline. that could be the case through about lunchtime. along the coast, even in boston, i'd be prepared for that. elsewhere it's dry through lunchtime but the clouds thicken up. you have a cell coming into connecticut as well. in the higher elevations of the

rain. heaviest rain comes overnight. downpours and thunder are possible. this is your ride home. the rain gets heavier by midnight. by 6:00 tomorrow morning this is getting out of here and we're drying out. it will be a windy one tomorrow. the potential is there for an inch or maybe a little bit more of rain. so this is going to be a good rain to help out drought. temperatures tonight thirsz and 40s there could be thunder. look at these winds gusts. -- wind gusts. your weekend is fairly quiet, maybe evening clouds on saturday, a couple of showers possible on sunday. as you head toward halloween on monday, it's looking ok for the

she begins to fight back as the tiger drags her around. another train runs to help. the woman got way but some animal rights activist are outraged by the way the trainers treated the tiger and are calling for an investigation. >> police are investigating this man accused of destroying donald trump's star on the remove the star and action it -- auction it off and raise money for the women accusing donald trump of groping them. >> your economy. asian stocks drop amid a mixed bag of earning reports. oil prices logging a low. u.s. stock futures are higher at this hour. investors will be watching for the weekly snapshot on unemployment. that is due out this morning.

t last night in boston. passengers here knocked out windows on this train at back bay station during the evening rush last night as smoke filled the station and some cars, believed to be caused by an overheated motor that caused a fire on the rail. nobody was hurt. the mbta said the director made theht >> police patrols on alert after a woman was groped on a bike path in marblehead. a man on a bike and wearing a face mask exposed himself and tried to grab her. she got away and called 911. police searched for the suspect for hours, but the search is now suspended. the area where this happened is just steps from the tower school. investigators say an off-duty sheriff's deputy was justified in the shooting death of this

rampage in taunton last spring. arthur darosa killed two people and injured a pregnant waitress before he was shot inside the bertucci's at the silver city galleria. the report released yesterday showed darosa was considering suicide when he underwent a mental evaluation hours before the attack. >> sky west airlines pilot is facing charges that he was drunk on the job. police arrested russell duszak yesterday in rapid city, south dakota. they say the smelled alcohol on the pilot's breath. police say his blood-alcohol level was higher than the .04 that is allowed in the cockpit. the pilot now on administrative leave. four water fountains at three quincy schools are shut down after water testing showed high levels of lead in the water. lead contaminated fountains are being repaired. in a letter sent home to

commute. nothing more than a shower or patch of drizzle through midday. toward the ride home this afternoon, and especially tonight, that's when the rain chances really are going up. the potential is there for about an inch of rainfall. this is one of our computer models indicating either side of an inch widespread across the area. there's going to be snow. a few flakes possible, but accumulating snow a couple of inches in the berkshires and across new england. snow across new york state. it's running into high pressure. so much of the morning hours are dry. the system will come in with some wind . there could be gusts 45 to 50 miles per hour along the coastline. tomorrow is a weather impact day for that reason. the rain gets out of here early. the weekend, we're back into the 50s, close to 60 on saturday.
