emily: good morning, everyone. it is friday, october 28. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. breaking news at 4:30. a deadly standoff at a motel on the sea coast of new hampshire. the crime that brought police there in the first place. emily: a possible kidnapping investigation. the man police are questioning randy: open tolling beginning tonight and what you need to know ahead of that and the issues some are having getting a pass for the turnpike. emily: we'll get to that. first we want to check in with cindy. it is 50 degrees out. yesterday we were talking about freezing temperatures. cindy: yeah, such a difference. warmer outside. windy. we've got some rain. we've had heavy rain through the overnight. a lot of that shifting north and

look north of town. we're still seeing very heavy downpours through parts of the north shore, as you head into the new hampshire sea coast and the rain in new hampshire as well. some good rain from the mid to outer cape and the islands. a wind advisory is up until 10:00 a.m. gusts potentially 40-50 miles an hour. seeing gusts over 30 miles an hour in boston and closer to 40 on nantucket. there's the warmth, th, closer to the coastline. colder through parts of western massachusetts with 40's in worcester. you see this whole system will be lifting to the north. we are going to shift those winds to the west this afternoon. that will dry things out. still a few showers around 8:00 a.m. we'll brighten things up lunchtime. can't rule out a pop-up shower here later on this afternoon. look at these temperatures. lower 50's today. that's even milder this weekend. the full timeline coming up.

it's not the most pleasant driving conditions if you're heading out the door. a check by alston-brighton. eastbound at the top of the screen. let's see the rest of your ride. not dealing with overnight construction. heading into boston, no major issues south, 95, 24, route 3 looking good. if you're traveling the pike, getting by at the speed limit. north of town, no problems. we're expecting trains and buses to start on schedule. man is dead after an hours-long standoff at a hotel in hampton, new hampshire. police arrived at the mari-anne motel at 8:30 last night to look for a burglary suspect. a 38-year-old man then shot at them before apparently killing himself. police evacuated the building as they tried to get the man to surrender. he would not. no officers were hurt. randy: a possible kidnapping is under investigation in new hampshire. police say 22-year-old victor rosario dragged his girlfriend

londonderry yesterday. a coworker called 9-1-1 as rosario drove off with that woman. state police in massachusetts were tracking them in -- tracked them down in rosario's car in worcester. nobody was hurt. rosario has not been charged but could be facing kidnapping and assault charges. emily: concord police are searching for a man they say approached a child at an elementary school. police say this man called out to the boy from his car yesterday afternoon offering him candy. he saw the man taking pictures with his phone. police want to question that man. randy: right now, commuters are getting ready for some major changes that we're just hours away from the start of open road tolling in massachusetts. emily: we're talking major demolition. hundreds of thousands of drivers will be affected. the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is at the west on tolls with the morning.

take a good look behind me. this is the last time it will look like this. in just a matter of hours, these major changes get underway. here's what you need to know this morning. at 10:00 tonight, open tolling takes effect. that means no more cash on the mass pike. this weekend, toll plaza demolition begins. what does all this mean for you? for the next few weeks while the toll plazas are dismantled, you still have to drive around the work zone plaza, then through the middle, meaning you have to slow down and stay in your lane. in other words, you've got to plan for delays. and there are some price changes as well. from i-84 to boston, it will cost you $3.60 with a massachusetts e-z pass transponder. from 495 to boston, $2.6.

boston. these prices are higher if you don't have an e-z pass or you have one from another state. plan ahead. even the d.o.t. says this commute could be rough for quite some time. that is the latest live from the weston toll this morning. antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: the commonwealth is making changes to deal with all the frustration in this transition. the eyeopener's sera congi in natick to explain. sera: a lot of fr randy. a lot of people have been swarming this e-z pass service center at the rest area trying to get their hands on these transponders, but a lot of people are telling us that it's not been an easy process. as you have heard, starting tonight at 10:00, cash will no longer be accepted on the mass pike. if you don't have a transponder, you'll get a bill in the mail. people trying to get these devices say there have been long lines and a lot of frustration. >> you would think they would

emily: marathon bombing survivors continue to get belongings back. for one survivor it's bringing closure. erika brannock wasn't sure she was ready to see the clothes. the maryland teacher was cheering her mother on when the bombs went off. brannock says it was emotional items held by the f.b.i. for evidence. her cell phone was frozen in time. >> and i had 67 text messages and over 10 voicemails from that day. it was very emotional, but it was also healing at the same time to kind of come full circle. emily: the f.b.i. says it started releasing evidence to survivors in august. randy: a bit of a battle over changes proposed to boston city

emily: 4:45. check this out. a photo from sturbridge. that is snow! a decent amount of it. the cold air last night making conditions a little more slick out there. i don't think i'm ready to see that picture yet. randy: good luck, everybody in sturbridge. cindy: the highest elevations in western massachusetts reported up to six inches of all of that gone. we've transitioned to rain in the berkshires at this point. take a look at some of these totals. this is impressive for november or even early december. here we are in october. there's that 6 inches in heath. westfield, 2 1/2 inches of snow as well. wintry scenes. we have a lot of pictures in. your driving skills, forget about it even in the rain. this is what they were dealing with yesterday driving in the snow out that way. so pretty tough conditions overall.

inch in boston. we had that before midnight as well. we've seen about an inch of rain from this system. the back edge is making steady progress toward the north. this whole thing is pivoting up to the north and east around and area of low pressure right overhead now. so we still have a few raindrops in boston. the heaviest rain around lynn stretching northward toward the new hampshire sea coast. olessa was mentioning the heavy rain. that's moving through portsmouth. south of town through hyannis to the vineyard. westward, we're beginning to dry out. along the coastline, the winds are gusty. through 10:00 a.m., there is a wind advisory as these winds are kicking up. gusts 20, 30, 40 miles an hour right now in nantucket. you're going to notice that wind as you're stepping out. it's coming off the water. it's mild. 50 degrees. inland, 40's in worcester. 30's out in the western part of the state and a little fog as well, visibility running 1/2

probably a good idea to allow some extra time this morning. your drive will be a little challenging even as the steady rain lifts out. there are big puddles this morning. this area of low pressure is going to lift north and eastward. as it does, the winds shift to the west behind it this afternoon. that westerly wind will bring in drier air. notice how the skies brighten up around lunchtime. but that wind is going to be strong. we're still gusting over 20 miles an hour this afternoon. so the temperatures even though they're near 50 now, basically hold in the lower 50's today m even we get this steady rain this morning, we get into the afternoon. there is energy that's going to be rotating on through. can't rule out a pop-up shower here during the late afternoon hours into early this evening. tonight we begin to clear things out late. temperatures fall back into the 30's to low 40's. tomorrow is a milder day. your saturday upper 50's to around 60 degrees. that system moves out. as the next approaches, it's a

as well. heading in order in good shape on 93 out of methuen. nice and light in saugus. trains and buses expecting to start on schedule. randy: some parents of boston school children are outraged over the mayor's makeover plans for city hall. the extreme makeover could cost more than $100 million if it happens, and parents tell "the herald" the money should be put toward the schools. the proposal comes a day after the city announced $100 in cost-cutting measures for the public schools. they say there's no competition between schools and city hall. emily: your economy this friday. governor baker's administration holding off on cuts as the state looks for other ways to close the budget gap. less than a month ago, the state secretary of administration and finance believed the administration needed to cut $294 million from executive branch spending, and that's due

revenues. some lawmakers suggested those revenues might pick up. the administration believes state employee buy-outs will save money. asian shares were mixed as investors key in on wall street's recent decline. futures here are lower. attention will turn today to the gdp report on consumer spending domestically. randy: in your health this morning, a california woman wins a major lawsuit against johnson & johnson over baby the suit alleged that years of using the company's baby powder with talcum in that powder caused her ovarian cancer. a jury awarded the woman more than $70 million. johnson & johnson was accused of negligent conduct in the marketing of its baby powder. it's the latest lawsuit raising concerns about the effects of talc powder. cranberries and cranberry juice may not help prevent urinary

emily: it is 4:55. we are following some breaking news in your early news to go. randy: one man is dead after an hours-long standoff with police at a motel in new hampshire on the sea coast. police say the man fired at officers. he was holed up in the mari-anne motel on ocean boulevard. no officers hurt there. they say that after the standoff ended with a 38-year-old suspect killed himself.

emily: this barnstable man is accused in two burglaries. the victim says she caught richard herrera outside her home wednesday night on satuit-newton road. she tried to stop him but he sped away. the woman got a license plate and called police. he has served two sentences for breaking and entering. contentious negotiations to put a muslim abandoned farmland in dudley have broken down. the islamic society of greater worcester ended talks with the board of selectmen according to "the globe" after the board refused the latest proposal. the group plans to pursue the fight in court. opponents argue because muslims traditionally do not use coffins, burials could contaminate water. randy: nearly 150 arrests have been made in north dakota as police have been working to move protestors of the dakota access

spray to disperse the crowd demonstrating along the native american land that they say will hurt the environment. no serious injuries reported. but at least 141 people were arrested. police say one woman fired three shots at them, but she was quickly restrained. emily: seven antigovernment protestors have been acquitted of charges related to this standoff at a federally-owned wildlife sanctuary in oregon. the group led by conspiracy and weapons charges. the acquittal came as a surprise to prosecutors who argued the group used force and threats to occupy that reserve. randy: bizarre rescue. this deer was lassoed. he was headed toward martha's

off into the woods. emily: the celtics were slated for a comeback against the bulls but fell short. isaiah thomas came out on fire. they went on an 11-0 run, thomas scoring 25 on the night. but a turnover right here would cost the celtics. the bulls run away with it 105-99 the final. randy: exciting but unfortunate. emily: it started right. cindy: there are many more games to go. hopefully they go the other way for the celtics. check out the radar. you can see the heavy rain from overnight is generally shifting offshore and up to the north right now. but there are some lightning strikes. you see this in the water to the south. so it's been pretty wild overnight. the system basically is strengthening and sitting on top of us now. as it pushes northward here the next few hours, we're going to see those winds shift around to the west and bring in drier air.

look at the wind gusts from overnight. we got to close to 60 miles an hour in east falmouth. fair haven, over 50. mashpee gusting to 50. plymouth gusting over 40 miles an hour. there is a wind advisory until 10:00 a.m. i think our strongest winds have passed but we're still talking about gusts over 30 miles an hour from the east-southeast this morning. once that storm lifts northward, look what happens this afternoon. the winds shift to the west, but they're not settling down that much. i don't think we'reki but gusting 20 to 30 miles an hour right through this evening. it is a windy day ahead. temperatures in the low 50's. you get down to new york, philly, d.c., we climb closer to 60 degrees and mid 60's back toward chicago. that is what's heading our way tomorrow. i don't think we're going to get up into the 60's, but as high pressure slips to our north, it's a little warmer for your saturday, mainly dry. but watch this front drop southward on saturday night and on sunday a wave of low pressure
