kelly ann: good morning, guys. it's a chilly start but the rain has shifted out. we are dry to start this early morning. it is down to the 40's for most spots. we have a bit of a wind making things feel chillier if you're heading out along with clouds as well. not too far off to our west, we have signs of some very light rain moving into western mass. that's something we're tracking for later this morning. a spot drizzle or two can't be ruled out. the overall forecast today is looking than that we have seen over the past few days. breezy conditions a concern as we do see low pressure just to our east, and that's churning right off the atlantic. that's going to bring our wind gusts up to near 20 to 25 miles per hour this afternoon. not quite enough for a wind advisory but enough that it's going to impact the way that temperature feels this afternoon in the mid 50's. right now, you're heading out. most spots are in the 40's along the coast with downtown boston

much of worcester county. upper 30's in worcester right now. over the next 12 hours, temperatures will warm significantly, but it's all about those winds this afternoon. doug and antoinette, i'll have a look at how that will impact us today and also as we head into the forecast tomorrow. antoinette: already, kelly ann, can you. breaking overnight, a man seriously injured after a crash in peabody. this happened at 1:30 this morning on route 1 in the southbound lanes. no word on what caused the crash. we'll bring younf happening right now, open road tolling is now in effect on the mass pike. doug: that means no more cash tolls. the eye's nicole estaphan live with what you can expect when you hit the road. nicole, good morning. nicole: antoinette, doug, what you can expect is crews on the road right now working to realign that traffic flow. off there in the distance, those

olessa stepanova will be watching hang-ups on the mass pike as traffic patterns changed. and then they get me hooked up in sky 5. we'll bring you the bird's-eye view. that's at 4:30 a.m. antoinette: a tragic story out of western mass. a 9-year-old girl is killed while getting off her school bus in the town of plainfield. state police say the girl was getting off the bus when the door closed on her. she was dragged and then hit by the bus. several other children were on that busur the driver. the district attorney will decide if charges in the case are warranted. right now, police in somerset are investigating a serious crash. this happened last night on route 6. a man and his young daughter being treated for injuries. you can see a car was crushed when it ended up under that tractor-trailer. the driver of the car ran a red light. the police chief says it's

doug: hillary clinton speaking out on the f.b.i.'s decision to review new emails related to her personal server. calling on the agency to be open with the public. the f.b.i. announcing the new review in a letter to congress. in that letter, f.b.i. director james comey writes, "in connection with an unrelated case, the f.b.i. has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to that investigation." now, that unrelated case, a sexting investigation into clinton aide huma abadin's former husband anthony weiner. clinton calls that a rumor. >> we don't know what to believe. there will be even more rumors. that is why it is incumbent upon the f.b.i. to tell us what they're talking about. doug: this so-called october surprise comes 11 days before the election. antoinette: donald trump wasting no time jumping on this new controversy surrounding his

>> the f.b.i. would never have reopened this case at this time unless it were a most egregious criminal offense. justice will prevail. antoinette: trump has repeatedly criticized the f.b.i. for failing to recommend criminal charges against clinton because of her handling of classified emails. doug: the boston the legalization of marijuana. they contributed $850,000 for a campaign for a safe and healthy massachusetts. the archdiocese fears passage of question 4 will have a negative impact on parishes and social outreach programs. none of the money was taken from parish funds or contributions. antoinette: a man accused of kidnapping his girlfriend in londonderry and driving her to massachusetts is facing charges.

he was released on $5,000 bail. rosario is facing multiple charges after he allegedly dragged his girlfriend out of work on thursday afternoon and then drove off with her. a rochester, new hampshire, man pleads guilty to giving a teenager a deadly dose of fentanyl. mark ross will spend the next 20 years in prison. 17-year-old eve tarmey was found dead in a rochester motel room last year. her motel room, has also pleaded guilty and will be sentenced in december. doug: well, new details on this frightening flight out of chicago. the smoke and flames now being blamed on engine failure. the engine blowing up just before takeoff, thank goodness. federal investigators now on the scene. 170 passengers and crew members onboard that american airlines flight. they were forced to evacuate. about 20 people suffering minor injuries as they made their way

happened as the plane was preparing for takeoff. >> we didn't get in the air. and it seemed like the right side engine blew. big ball of fire. doug: that passenger called the evacuation coordinated chaos. officials say the plane was loaded with 43,000 pounds of fuel, and it was leaking. they say the incident could have been devastating. antoinette: another plane up in flames. this one in florida. watch. this fedex plane sitting on the runway in fort lauderdale. the pilot says the landing gear collapsed when the plane touched down. both pilots escaped without getting hurt. oh, just some amazing video. doug: hope everybody's having a good saturday. antoinette: the u.s. economy is on the rise. doug: what experts say is leading to the growth. and now that you can travel to cuba, you've got to find a way to get there. the massachusetts-based company

doug: welcome back. it's 5:12. the u.s. economy grew 2.9% during the third quarter.

economists say it's thanks mostly to consumer spending and trade. even with the spike, the growth for the year was only 1.7%. that's slow by historical standards. antoinette: needham-based trip advisor will be one of the first companies in the nation booking trips to cuba. the travel site has received federal approval to book flights and other travel arrangements to the island nation. all trips must be considered cultural, business, or a family visit. the u.s. restored all right. get ready for those airline fare prices to climb a little bit higher. american airlines and southwest airlines both announcing this week they are hiking up the cost of flights by $5 each way. price increase is an effort for the airlines to make up for a nearly two-year revenue climb. the slump comes from a surplus of flights despite travel demand being flow.

kelly ann cicalese. doug: i don't know about you. i've never seen a surplus of flights. good saturday morning to you, everybody. kelly ann, going to be better than the last couple of days? kelly ann: it's not saying much to say it's going to be better, but it will be. yesterday our temperatures actually were right around normal in the 50's, but it didn't feel like it. antoinette: i got dressed yesterday in the raincoat. kelly ann: it was rainy, afternoon, nothing compared to the strength of the wind yesterday. that's going to really help allow those temperatures to feel milder heading out this afternoon. this morning, there's a nice break. the satellite/radar imagery showing showers to our west. this is something we're watching for later this afternoon. it's looking to weaken. we're expecting a passing area of drizzle or two at most as we

you can see that rain actually extends all the way through much of vermont and also areas of new york as well. that's going to be shifting eastward. good news for us. a mainly dry and quiet day. the winds a bit breezy. you will still feel some influence of that storm system to our east w. that wrapping around, we do look to see that chance of wind gusts to near 20 miles an hour, especially heading toward the cape and islands for this afternoon. next system we're watching is off to our west. this is one bringing som canada and that cold front will be impacting us for sunday night heading into monday. temperatures will get cool. we're also talking about the chance of some showers drifting through, something that will mainly affect our southern locations, especially as you go from the mass pike south through much of the south coast and rhode island as well. so our futurecast is looking mainly dry as we head into the morning forecasts. notice how those clouds really

clouds for the midmorning to late morning forecast as well. this afternoon is a mix of sun and clouds. clouds looking to be rather stubborn. things are relatively dry. that's the case as we head into the late joafternoon forecast a well. tonight, don't be surprised if you see a drop or two out there. the overall forecast looking dry as we look into late tonight and heading into sunday morning. our sunday night forecas with that we're looking to see many spots miss out, as it traction -- tracks just to the south. we're talking in the upper 50's especially along the coast. downtown boston at 58 degrees. this is the thing. it's going to feel a lot warmer than yesterday, but really it's not too much warmer. temperatures yesterday got into the mid 50's. it just didn't feel like it because of those winds that were in place. your seven-day outlook includes

it's that chance of showers as we head into sunday and monday that we are watching. your halloween forecast includes some light wind as the kids are heading out that night. things will get chilly quickly. we're in the 50's that afternoon. at night we're falling into the 30's and 40's. the rest of the seven-day looking mild and, doug and antoinette, we're even seeing signs of the 60's for later on this workweek. antoinette: 60's. i thought we'd said goodbye. doug: welcome back. antoinette: 5:17. chec passengers killed in a deadly crash are suing the bus company. 13 people in all were killed and dozens of others injured when that bus collided with a tractor-trailer near palm springs last weekend. that bus had just left a casino earlier in the morning. the family claimed the driver was speeding and failed to brake to avoid the crash. they are questioning if the bus was properly maintained. antoinette: the state is opening to reopen shellfish beds in

after reports of 75 cases of the noro virus. the contamination is being blamed on an algae affecting shellfish beds from maine to rhode island. doug: protestors against an oil pipeline in north dakota are standing down for now, that after about 50 demonstrators barricaded a bridge near a state highway and faked a line of military vehicles and police in riot gear. the group called standing rock has been protesting the four-state thousand-mile pipeline which will carry oil from north dakota to illinois. announcer: now here's josh brogadir with sportscenter 5 powered by xfinity. josh: the bruins early season, high marks to the top line, lower to the d and the goaltending especially without tuukka. rask has only played in three of seven games, the only three games the bruins have won. but there was a good sign at

the media. many partisans from both major parties frequently accuse the media of being biased against them or their ideology. donald trump has allegedly used and been abused by the so-called media. it all depends on what lens you view from. indeed, a new gallup poll finds that confidence in the media has fallen to a four-decade low. we won't quibble with the findings. however, many of these poll respondents and much of the public in general share a common perception that the media is a at the risk of sounding defensive, what really vexes us is figuring out who this mysterious media is. far from any sort of even passive cooperation or collusion, all media outlets exist in a fierce 24/7 competition vying for every viewer, reader, listener, and visitor. there is simply no one-size-fits-all group that is

media, bloggers, cartoonists, all of them carry credentials. calling all of these outlets the media is, as one "washington post" writer observed, analogous to calling all ocean life the fish. it is too general a classification to be useful. from distinct media outlets to individual journalists, we can all do better. but with a vast array of media to choose from, it's ultimately up to voters to choose. follow only the media that reinforces their world view or shop to find a balanced diet of

gusts we saw last night and the light nv -- before as well. down into the upper 30's with wind chills. even though temperatures are inching toward the mid 50's, those winds will make things feel just a bit cooler. the good news is those winds will be nothing compared to what we did see last night, doug. doug: kelly ann, thank you. we're following breaking news on the eye. antoinette: we have video just in from a deadly crash on the mass pike. state police say one person is dead, fiv westborough grafton line around 1:30 this morning. the crash involved multiple vehicles and it is under investigation. doug: also breaking this morning, police are investigating a serious highway crash in peabody. one man seriously injured. it happened at around 1:30 this morning on route 1 southbound. no word right now on what caused that crash. antoinette: right now state police investigating the death of a 9-year-old in plainfield. she was killed friday while

her and then she was dragged by the bus before it hit her. state police are now questioning the driver. doug: right now hillary clinton is urging the f.b.i. to release more details about the new emails discovered in connection with the investigation into her private email server. the f.b.i. director sent a letter to congress stating that he felt obligated to let lawmakers know he was reviewing more emails after he had reportedly testified that the investigation was complete. antoinette: federal before takeoff. an engine failure caused the fire. about 20 people are recovering from minor injuries. right now, the rules of the road are changing on the mass pike. doug: they sure are. open road tolling is underway. the eyeopener's nicole estaphan live in weston, and drivers already facing new traffic patterns this morning, nicole? nicole: antoinette, doug, that's right. take a look behind me. this is why that traffic flow

the eyeopener's diane cho with the possible connection to a similar disturbing case last month. >> very, very strange. diane: residents are shocked after a resident exposed himself to three young girls. police say it happened around 4:30 in the afternoon on tuesday near ward park in brookline. >> it's pretty alarming. reporter: police say there was a similar incident that happened on september 28. it was 4:20 less than a mile away from the latest incident. police say in that case, a man exposed himself to three middle school-age children. authorities are now investigating to see if the two cases could be related. in the meantime, police are urging residents to be alert and report any suspicious activity. >> i hope they find him soon. reporter: police report the man is described to be in his mid to late 20's in a gray or silver sedan. in brookline, diane cho, wcvb newscenter 5.

the smoke-filled train at the station is going to be part of a training drill. it's set for 9:00 this morning and should run until noon. but according to the t, the service switch is for maintenance and has nothing to do with today's training exercise. a brockton police officer seen here examining an atm broken into and looted early yesterday pleasant street. somebody entered the building, cut the alarm system's wires, and pried open the atm's backdoor. we don't know how much money was taken, but it was all taken. no arrests have been made in the case. antoinette: a brockton man will spend the next 43 years behind bars for rape and attempted murder. a judge has sentenced 54-year-old anthony bunton to prison. the vicious attack happened just three years after he was

rape. plymouth county district attorney tim cruz says the brockton "enterprise" he is satisfied with the sentence. doug: boston police searching for a witness to a crime. the person on a scooter may have witnessed an altercation that resulted in a man's death last saturday on mass ave. this person is not a suspect. police have arrested 35-year-old peter mcgowan for murder but want to talk to the person on e antoinette: a reported break-in and vandalism at the home of a millbury police officer was apparently staged by the officer's wife. on october 17, the break-in was reported at the home of daniel daly. the report was called in by daly's wife, maria, who claimed someone spray-painted the house. the story unravelled and investigators determined daly

of financial problems. >> your husband is a cop, his friends are cop, it's ridiculous. why would you do that? antoinette: maria daly will be charged with filing a false police report. doug: the search is on for a suspect in an officer-involved children. hayden moon is wanted by belmont, new hampshire, police. the incident started during a traffic stop yesterday morning. police tried to take moon into custody when they discovere existing warrant. he allegedly sped off prompting officers to open fire. police say they do not consider moon a danger to the public, but they are asking people who may have spotted him to give thome a call. it's an unusual approach to organ donation. antoinette: this one's pretty interesting. doctors transplanting infected kidneys into patients. how they say the new method can save more lives. doug: fountain of youth. take a good look at it. antoinette: i thought you were talking about you.

reat public education, vote no on question two. antoinette: good morning. welcome back. your health this morning. doctors may have discovered the fountain of youth, and it's sitting right in the produce aisle at your supermarket. they have discovered an enzyme in certain vegetables that appears to fight the effects of aging. that see it right there -- in broccoli as well as cucumbers and cabbage. tests show it reduces age-related weight gain and vision problems in mice. tests on people start next month. doug: now i know why i weigh so much. follow me on this one if you can. there's new hope for patients awaiting kidney transplants. doctors at a pennsylvania hospital are transplanting

the johns hopkins doctors say they treat the infected kidney so the patient doesn't get infected. they've performed five of these transplants so far. many of the organs come from otherwise healthy folks who may have overdosed on drugs. >> we start giving them medication. they then don't show evidence of it in their bloodstream and hopefully they'll be no different than someone who's never been exposed. doug: doctors say they with this technique. nearly 2,000 people are awaiting organ transplants. 82% of them need kidneys. announcer: stormteam 5 forecast with meteorologist kelly ann cicalese. antoinette: all right, kelly ann, now do we rake the leaves? because they are just gone. kelly ann: i know, it's piling up. winds this afternoon. it may not be the perfect day to start. you've got another weekend.

next weekend. with that, we'll see the next chance of rain. doug and antoinette? antoinette: thank you. a look at some of the stories we're following right now. doug: the city of seattle is on high alert following neurological illnesses. eight children have been hospitalized. the illness is a rare condition affecting the nervous system and the health department says they are concerned over the number of close cases. antoinette: an alarming figure from baylor university. outside investigators found 17 n domestic assaults involving 19 athletes since 2011. the number includes four reports of gang rapes. the investigation follows a series of resignations from top administrators after accusations that the university was not properly investigating sexual assaults. some say the university was nor concerned with protecting the baylor brand. doug: amazon has been hit with a $30 million lawsuit involving a house fire caused by a hover
