winds still in place. they're not going to be as strong as wind gusts we saw last night and the night before, but we're talking about some of those breezy winds pushing in, bringing occasional wind gusts up to 20 or 25 miles an hour, especially as you head out toward the cape and south shore as well. temperatures heading out this morning are on the lower end of the scale. we are seeing a few 30's out there, especially through southern new hampshire. as you're moving out through northern portions of worcester county as well, especially through the hills where we're seeing mid to upper 30's. 40's. 47 degrees in hyannis right now. eventually this afternoon, doug, we're into the 50's. that's going to feel a lot better. doug: thank you. breaking overnight, a crash on the mass pike. this happened on the westborough grafton line at 1:30 this morning. the crash involved multiple vehicles and it is under investigation. antoinette: more breaking news this morning, a man seriously injured after a crash in peabody.

state police are questioning the driver. the district attorney will determine if charges are warranted. police in somerset are investigating a serious crashed that happened last night on route 6. a man and his young daughter treated for injuries. you can see right there the car crushed and ended up under that tractor-trailer. investigators say the driver of the car ran a red light. the police chief says it is nothing short of a miracle that everyone survived. doug: ll speaking out on the f.b.i.'s decision to review new emails related to her personal server. the presidential candidate calling on the agency to be open with the public. the f.b.i. announcing the new review in a letter to congress. in that letter, f.b.i. director james comey writes, "in connection with an unrelated case, the f.b.i. has learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation." that unrelated case perhaps is a sexting investigation into

former congressman anthony weiner. clinton calling that simply a rumor at this point. >> we don't know what to believe, and i'm sure there will be even more rumors. that's why it is incumbent upon the f.b.i. to tell us what they're talking about. doug: this so-called october surprise comes 11 days before the election. antoinette: donald trump, of course, wasting no time jumping in on this new controversy surrounding his opponent. he lashed out at clinton during an event in iowa last night. >> the f.b.i. would never have reopened this case at this time unless it were a most egregious criminal offense. justice will prevail. antoinette: trump has repeatedly criticized the f.b.i. for failing to recommend criminal charges against clinton because of her handling of classified emails. doug: the boston archdiocese is bank rolling the fight against the legalization of recreational

church contributed $850,000 to the campaign for a safe and healthy massachusetts. the archdiocese fears passage of question 4 will have a negative impact on its parishes and social outreach programs. none of the money given to fight this legalization was taken from parish funds or contributions. antoinette: right now, a man accused of kidnapping his girlfriend in londonderry and driving her to massachusetts is facing charges. 22-year-old victor rosario turned himself in last night after police issued a warrant he was released on $5,000 bail. rosario faces multiple charges after he allegedly dragged his girlfriend out of work thursday afternoon and then drove off with her. a rochester, new hampshire, man pleads guilty to giving a teenager a deadly dose of fentanyl. mark ross will spend the next 20 years in prison. eve tarmey was found dead in a rochester motel room last year. her mother, who was also in that

december. doug: new details on this frightening flight out of chicago. smoke and flames being blamed on engine failure. the engine blowing up just before takeoff. federal investigators are now on the scene. 170 passengers and crew members onboard the american airlines flight, they were forced to evacuate. about 20 people suffering minor injuries as they made their way out of that plane. one passenger describing what happened as the plane was preparing for takeoff. >> we didn't get in the air and the right side engine blew. doug: scary. that passenger calling the evacuation coordinated chaos. antoinette: another plane up in flames, this one in florida. watch the video here. you see that fireball erupt from the fedex plane that was sitting on the runway in fort

doug: it's 6:12. welcome back. the u.s. economy grew 2.9% during the third quarter. that's the biggest jump in the last two years. economists say it's thanks mostly to consumer spending and trade. but even with that growth for the year was only about 1.7%. that's slow by historical standards. antoinette: needham-based trip advisory will soon be one of the first companies in the nation booking trips to cuba. the travel site has received federal approval to book flights and other travel arrangements to the island nation. all trips must be considered cultural, business, or a family visit. the u.s. restored diplomatic relations with cuba two years ago.

prices to climb a little bit higher. american airlines and southwest airlines both announcing this week they are hiking up the cost of flights by $5 each way. the price increase is an effort by the airlines to make up for a nearly two-year revenue decline. the slump comes from a surplus of flights despite travel demand being slow. announcer: now your stormteam 5 forecast with meteorologist kelly ann cicalese. doug: all right. quite a rainstorm and windstorm yester kelly ann: we saw winds last night up to 40 miles per hour. antoinette: i heard them. doug: it's not going to be as strong today. we have a bit of a breeze but nothing compared to yesterday. that was absolutely incredible. so some good news as we're kicking off the weekend. we do see things starting to quiet down. for later this morning, we can't rule out a spot drizzle or two. this is what we're seeing.

worcester county. that will make through the rest of our region. not seeing much out of this. we're talking about very light drizzle passing through. the overall pattern is looking dry as this continues to shift off the coast for this afternoon. the overall grand scheme of the forecast this weekend includes a low-pressure system to our west. bringing the cold front and a chance of showers. but a lingering system just to our west bringing gusty winds into the area. and so that's why we're talking about some breezy conditions this afternoon. not looking to see those wind gusts up to 40 like last night, but we're talking about occasional wind gusts up to 20 on 25 miles per hour. still, temperatures this afternoon reaching into the mid to upper 50's. that means wind chills looking to stay in the 50's, quite a bit warmer than wind chills yesterday in the 40's.

this morning. there's that spot drizzle we're tracking. it continues to fade. the overall forecast looking dry. could see spot rain this evening mainly tracking north of the mass pike and through southern new hampshire as well. heading into the forecast overnight, clouds overhead lead us into a cloudier start for sunday morning. the good news is much of your sunday will be dry. we'll see sunbreaks for the afternoon and those winds will start to die down. you can get some outdoor chores down, rake the leaves as those winds start to finally cooperate. temperatures this afternoon looking to reach into the upper 50's, right around normal this time of year, if not just a tad above. that's going to feel a lot better as you're heading out today. it's getting warmer as we head into the forecast tomorrow as well. we see chances of rain holding off until mainly late in the evening and staying mainly to our south. big question is halloween. many of us are getting out

temperatures will quickly cool as we see a clear sky overhead. so we're dropping into the 40's, even 30's for late on monday night. keep that in mind for those trick-or-treaters. they want to pack those coats. good news is it will be staying dry. rest of the seven-day, we're staying rather dry for much of this work week. we'll see that sun break through. we're actually talking about a warm-up as well. temperatures quickly going from the 50's on monday and warming into the 60's by wednesday. in fact, the high 65 feel unseasonably warm. doug and antoinette? antoinette: we will take unseasonably warm anytime. time 6:16. checking some of the other stories happening right now. doug: the families of two bus passengers killed in a deadly crash, they're going to sue the bus company. 13 people were killed and dozens injured when the bus collided with a tractor-trailer near palm strings yesterday. it had just left a casino.

they're questioning whether the bus was properly maintained. antoinette: the state is hoping to reopen shellfish beds in wellfleet next week. officials shut down the area after reports of 75 cases of the norovirus. the contamination is being blamed on an algae affecting shellfish beds from maine to rhode island. doug: protestors against an oil pipeline in north dakota are standing down for now, that after about 50 demonstrators barricaded a brine highway and faced a line of military vehicles and police in riot gear. protest leaders told people to return to the main encampment. the sheriff's department described the group as non-confrontational. antoinette: the supreme court will take on a controversial case between a transgender teen and the virginia school board. the school wants to stop the

that student will not be able to use the boys bathroom for now. a lower court had ordered the school board to accommodate the teen. but the justices in august put that order on hold while they considered whether to hear the appeal. your health this morning -- some doctors in boston may have a breakthrough when it comes to treating the millions of people who have diseases and injuries impacting their eyes. doug: it's amazing. emily riemer tells us it all centers around contact lenses. emily: it one packs some extra power. >> this lens here can release a medication for at least a month. emily: a lens that dispenses drugs, treatment for devastating diseases like glaucoma where pressure grows in a person's eye, eventually causing blindness. >> the problem is they don't notice the vision loss until it affects the central vision. at that point, it's too late.

glaucoma treatment, 50% of patients forget to take them, and eye plying the drops can be a challenge. the special contact lens could be a game-changer. >> the medication is given right to the patient right through the lens, and it passes. they don't have to actively remember to put it in. emily: the doctors from boston children's hospital worked on their lens for eight years. the key was designing a lens that would release the medication in measured doses over time. >> we came up with this drug polymer film that releases the drug slowly, but that can also contain a large amount of drug. it's not a disc that covers your field of vision. it's a ring. emily: the doctor says the lenses show promise in treating everything from corneal tears to dry eye. >> we have shown that it can

three young girls. the eyeopener's diane cho with the possible connection to a similar disturbing case last month. >> very, very strange. reporter: residents are shocked after learning that a man exposed himself to three young girls. >> it's kind of creepy. you hear about it, but you never think it's going to be where you are. reporter: police say it happened at 4:30 in the afternoon. during a follow-up investigation, police say they learned there was a similar incident that happened on september 28 the afternoon near brookline high school. less than a mile away from the latest incident. police say in that casea man exposed himself to three middle school-aged children. authorities are now investigating to see if the two cases could be related. in the mean time, police are urging residents to be alert and report any suspicious activity. >> i hope they find him soon. reporter: police say the man in the incident reported this week is described to be in his mid to late 20's in a gray or silver sedan at the time. in brookline, diane cho, wcvb

doug: a heads-up. the mbta says no need for alarm. the smoke that will be filling a train is all part of a training drill. that simulation is set for 9:00 this morning and should run until noon. bus service will replace red line trains between harvard and elway all weekend. according to the t, that service switch is for maintenance and has nothing to do with the training exercise. a brockton police officer seen heremi into and looted early yesterday morning. it happened at the 7-eleven on pleasant street. somebody entered the building, cut the alarm system's wires and pried open the atm's backdoor. all the cash was taken. no arrests have been made. antoinette: a brockton man will spend the next 43 years behind bars for rape and attempted murder. a judge has sentenced 54-year-old anthony bunton to prison for the 2014 crime. the vicious attack on a woman happened just three years after

plymouth county d.a. tim cruz tells the brockton enterprise he's satisfied with the sentence calling him a serial predator. doug: boston police searching for a person on a scooter who may have witnessed an altercation that resulted in a man's death last saturday afternoon on mass ave. the person here is not a suspect. they actually have arrested 35-year-old peter mcgowan for that murder. but they still want to talk to the person on the scooter. and vandalism at the home of a millbury police officer was apparently staged by the officer's wife. on october 17th, a break-in was reported at the home of officer daniel daly. the report was called in by daly's wife, maria, who also claimed that someone spray painted the couple's house. but the story quickly unravelled and investigators determined mrs. daly made the whole thing up because of financial problems. >> you have to be desperate

try to pull that sort of thing off, especially when your husband's a cop and all of his friends are cops. it's just ridiculous. why would you do that? antoinette: maria daly will be charged with filing a false police report. her husband was not involved and will not be charged. doug: a mother and her son are recovering after being hit by a car. both are suffering from serious but not life-threatening injuries. police are i far have not filed charges against the driver. right now, the search is on for a suspect in an officer-involved shooting. 24-year-old hayden moon is wanted by belmont, new hampshire police. that started at a traffic stop yesterday morning. they tried to take moon into custody when they discovered an existing warrant. he sped off prompting officers to open fire. >> he was informed there was a warrant, an incident ensued that

antoinette: good morning. 6:42. welcome back. your health this morning. doctors may have discovered the fountain of youth, and it's sitting right in the produce aisle at your local supermarket. they have discovered an enzyme in certain vegetables that appears to fight the effects of aging. you guessed it. you see it right there. the enzyme is found in broccoli as well as cucumbers and

tests show it reduces age-related weight gain and vision problems in mice. tests start on people next. doug: can you pour cheese on it? antoinette: that would make it so much better. doug: there's new hope for patients awaiting kidney transplants. stay with me on this one. doctors at a pennsylvania hospital are transplanting hepatitis-c infected kidneys into patients. the johns hopkins doctors say they treat the infected kidney so the patient doesn't get infected. they've performed five of these transplants so far. many of the organs come from otherwise healthy folks that may have died from drug overdoses. >> we start giving them medication. they then don't show evidence of it in their bloodstream and hopefully they'll be no different than someone who's never been exposed. doug: doctors say they could save 500 or more lives a year with the technique. nearly 2,000 people are awaiting organ transplants. 82% of those need the kidneys.

monday drying out. the sun's out but temperatures are chilly as we're staying in the 50's through much of the worcester hills. heading toward the south, we see highs in the upper 50's this afternoon. norwood inching toward 59 for today. a mostly cloudy sky. winds 10 to 15 miles per hour, but it's those wind gusts we're concerned about, especially heading out to the cape and the islands where we see wind gusts between 20 and 25 miles an hour. nothing compared to those place, these mid 50's, it will feel more like the lower 50's. an overall mild outlook, especially for hyannis, where we see temperatures inching toward 60 and back down to the 50's as we kick off next week. the overall pattern is still around for a mainly dry outlook for today. a spot shower or two can't be ruled out mainly because clouds are stubborn. that's what we're tracking. milder air in place. tomorrow, cold front for sunday
