morning weatherwise. clear to partly cloudy skies out there. 48 degrees in boston. notice the wind direction is from the north and west. even though we're starting out not terribly chilly, temperatures aren't going to climb that much today. 45 in worcester. 44 in beverly. lower 50's on cape cod. our weather coming from the north. you can see it's only in the mid 30's and lower 40's. that's a cool air direction for us. a front to the north will drop on through. high pressure off to the west going to give us a really nice a little more cloudiness this morning than we'll see through the afternoon. notice how the skies do brighten. by lunchtime we're in the lower 50's, holding in the low to mid 50's this afternoon. you will notice those winds picking up out of the northwest around 10 miles an hour this morning. they could gust over 20 miles an hour this afternoon. high of 55 boston, 50 in worcester with mid 50's on the south shore. your weekend forecast coming up. let's get out to the roads. good morning, olessa. olessa: good morning, cindy.

bridge, the leverett connector, it's a quiet start. the rest of your ride the same story. not seeing problems into boston. south 24 looks good. route 3 and 95 as well. construction wrapping up on 93 north by route 24. same along 128 over by great plain ave. and highland ave. no problems to report. trains and buses starting the morning on schedule. antoinette: breaking overnight, new details in a deadly crash on 128 south in waltham. stat hit by several vehicles while walking in one of the southbound lanes. that accident late last night forcing three lanes of traffic to be shut down for some time. the name of the victim has not been released and no indication as to why that person was walking on the highway. right now, construction crews are getting ready for a major project that will have a serious impact on thousands of drivers. randy: and the eye's antoinette antonio is in needham this morning with the changes

this is the stretch that could see major traffic backups starting tonight and really all through this weekend. this is why. crews are tearing down what's left of the old highland avenue bridge, basically the area that's right over 128. to give you an idea, about 5,000 drivers travel through this stretch of 128 in needham every hour on the weekends. take a closer look at the exact area we're talking about here. this is what you'll have to detour around. there will be delays. a view from sky 5 now the new highland avenue bridge is already in place. this is one of the final steps in a long-running expansion of this section of highway which as anyone who drives here know is pretty much always jammed. so if you drive this stretch on the weekend, here's what you need to know. starting at 8:00 tonight until 2:00 p.m. on saturday, northbound drivers will have to get off at 19-a, the highland avenue exit, and they'll be

then saturday until sunday afternoon, southbound drivers get off at 19-b and face similar detours. the d.o.t. has put out some of these maps here. there are 11 different scenarios depending on your situation. a lot of information to take in this morning. so we put this on our mobile app. something else you should know, all of highland avenue will be closed, so those drivers trying to use the local road will have to take big detours. the bottom line, avoid the area if you can this weekend. that is the latest live in needham antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: thank you. two u-mass dartmouth students are hurt after they were hit by a car near the campus. the victims, both women, 19 and 21 years old, were hit around 6:15 last night at the intersection of old westport road and cross road. that's near the campus entrance. their injuries are unclear this morning. the driver, a 53-year-old man from westport, did stay at the scene for the investigation.

to vote ahead of next week's election. today is the final day for early voting in massachusetts. the eyeopener's sera congi is in boston with what you need to know. good morning, sera. sera: good morning, emily. yes, a large turnout expected again today here at city hall plaza. take a look. you can see just how popular early voting has been. yesterday at city hall, there was a 45-minute wait. this is the first year for early voting in massachusetts, and because it's been so successful, commonwealth has asked local election officials to extend early voting hours to at least 5:00 tonight. now, as of yesterday, 800,000 registered voters in massachusetts cast their ballots ahead of this tuesday's election. that means early votes will make up between 20% and 25% of the total votes cast in massachusetts for this election. so if you want to do some early voting, today is your last day. you can find your polling places

mobile news app. live in boston, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: thank you. polls show it's an extremely tight race in new hampshire, and we've learned both donald trump and hillary clinton are planning stops in the granite state ahead of election day. trump will be in atkinson, then manchester monday. hillary clinton will be in manchester on sunday. exact details of that visit have not been released. monday, president obama will be campaigning for clinton at the university of new hampshire in durham. a new poll shows trump and clinton tied at 42%. no question, four days before the polls officially open on election day, it is about the battleground states. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is here with what to watch this morning. erika: democrats will go to federal court in new jersey to argue republicans are trying to intimidate voters. it's one of several legal challenges around the country

simmoneau will be with the clinton camp. their reports start monday. randy: harvard's men's soccer team had a scouting report rating incoming women on the soccer team on their appearance. the athletic director said this practice appears to be more widespread across the team and has coue including in 2016 and that current students that participated were not immediately forthcoming about their involvement in this. >> it's important for the school to uphold their values of, you know, gender equity and just respect. >> i understand that it's -- it's something to be frowned upon. but to cancel an entire season, you punish the entire academic body. randy: the women's team

little bit. i think sunday is the cooler day of the upcoming weekend. 45 right now out the door in worcester. 48 in boston. lower 50's on the cape this morning. our weather is coming from the north and west right out of canada and it's cooler up that way and that cooler air is flowing in this morning. high pressure, though, is off to the west. this is going to give us dry weather with a good amount of sunshine although some disturbances at times. we're seeing somhi i think the clouds will thin out and dissipate as we get deeper into the morning. brightening skies this afternoon. winds are only 10 miles per hour out the door this morning. notice how they pick up this morning. there will likely be gusts over 20. a gusty breeze this afternoon giving it a cooler feel with temperatures running only around 50 in worcester, mid 50's boston. low to mid 50's on the cape as well. you can see how the clouds break

we should stay mainly clear into a good portion of the overnight. that is going to allow the temperatures to drop. by tomorrow morning, upper 20's in our coldest suburbs. otherwise, lower 30's, should hang onto the mid 30's downtown. we'll start saturday with a lot of sunshine. then a disturbance goes by across northern new england. the brightest skies on saturday probably during the morning hours. sunday, high pressure noses in. a brighter day for most of us, will be picking up moisture along the coast. i think there's a little more cloud cover. notice the brightest skies over the interior with the clouds holding mainly along the coastline. dry weather for the weekend and dry weather early next week. a warming trend coming. if you're thinking about heading out to vote election day, the weather looks good. a little chilly in the morning. a nice recovery. near 60 in the afternoon with dry weather hanging on through the middle of next week.

olessa: so far this morning, not seeing any problems on the roads. a live look outside. zakim bridge, leverett connector, southbound side toward the bottom of the screen. let's get to the maps. all the overnight construction is gone. we have road work along the expressway. that picked up early. same story along 93. road work cleared away by route 24 which looks good as well out of brockton. route 3 quiet from weymouth, 95 from sharon, and that construction on 128 by route 9 picked up nice and early. pike is quiet this morning. if you're heading north of 93 looks good out of methuen down to the leverett connector. so far trains and buses are starting on schedule. anyone who takes the needham stretch, it will be closed so massdot can demolish the bridge. randy? randy: olessa, thank you. right now, police are trying to unravel a disturbing discovery.

found inside a metal storage unit. police say that she was shackled. she was banging on the walls for her life. kala brown had been missing since august. police were searching the spartanburg property of todd kohlhepp. he's a realtor and registered sex offender. guns and ammunition were also found. brown told police there may be as many as four bodies there. >> we're trying to make sure um, you know, that we don't have a serial killer on our hands. it very possibly could be what we have. randy: brown's boyfriend, who was last seen with her, is still missing. kohlhepp has not been charged, but investigators confirm he will face at least one charge of kidnapping. emily: your economy this friday, asian shares extended losses overnight, nerves about the looming u.s. election being blamed. stock futures here are mixed. investors keeping watch for october's jobs report that's due

new england's eyeopener. announcer: this is an editorial by wcvb channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. >> where do you stand? vote early or on election day? although october surprises have caused some controversy over the wisdom of early voting, so far that question is being answered yes by an overwhelming record margin of 2-1 over 2012's presidential contest. elected officials and complaint. america's voting process is broken. tuesdays are inconvenient and the number one difficulty and reason americans cite for not voting. tuesday elections have their origins during the agriculture-driven economy of the 1800's. weekends were eliminated for religious reasons and monday was a day of horse and buggy travel to the polls. it is beyond time to encourage some new thinking if not a complete overhaul of old standards.

inflexible work schedules. factors which also lower turnout. there is a risk early voting cuts short the vetting process and late developments in a campaign may impact our choice up to the last minute. do we really have a firm grasp on the important issues or inundated on their personal failings? considering the record negatives dogging both candidates, a vote, early or on election day, is a considered risk for the majority of americans. record early voting is a strong indicator of acceptance for change. let's hope the discussion on increased reforms occurs before the first candidate announces

eyeopener. randy: it's friday, 5:30. we're looking at traffic moving on the southeast expressway in boston. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm randy price. emily: i'm emily riemer along with cindy and olessa. another mild morning, but don't get used to this. cindy: we're not going to go up too much this afternoon. some mornings we start so cold and have this huge temperature recovery. emily: right. cindy: a little bit, not so much. pleasant day overall with sunshine. we're 45 in worcester. 48 degrees in boston. there are lower 50's on the cape. the winds aren't too strong out there just yet. they're about 10 miles per hour on average. but the winds are going to increase and they're coming from the north and west. they're pulling down colder air out of canada. we do have a little bit of patchy cloudiness. the clouds will be thinning out late this morning and into the afternoon.

happening this morning. sera: with election today coming up and today being the last day of early voting, both sides of this ballot question are stepping up their arguments. this morning, a number of doctors will make an appearance outside the state house urging people to support legalizing recreational marijuana. that group, part of the yes on 4 movement, argues that marijuana is relatively harmless and should not be classified with hard drugs. opponents argue legalization could make more marijuana accessible to kids. take a look at what question 4 would actually do. a yes vote would allow anyone 21 and over to possess, use and cultivate marijuana and marijuana products in limited amounts. it also includes regulation and taxation on marijuana and marijuana products. you can find a full list of the ballot questions on our website,

wcvb.com or on our mobile app. randy: there are realtime town by town results, any changes to the balance of power in congress. you can download it free right now in your app store. a new jersey woman is suing u-mass amherst in connection with her son's fatal overdose. eric sinacori was found dead in his apartment in october of 2013. he was a drug informant for the campus police at the time. his mother i from the school, saying they didn't inform her of his drug activity. and $1 million from the other student for wrongful death. the university says it does not comment on pending cases. >> right now we're walking through my first-ever abandoned subway tunnel system. never been in one in my life. emily: the mbta is looking for answers after this video shot underground comes to life, several people walking through abandoned green line tunnels.

cindy and the forecast. there was a little bit of rain. did it make an impact? cindy: yesterday's rain probably not. but the rain the past couple of weeks have. this drought has been going on a long time. the area in red has shrunk up, 9% statewide. extreme drought down 22% statewide. we need more rain. the pattern we're heading into is a very dry one over the next seven days. i don't see any rainfall at all. midwest, and that's going to give us a dry weekend. there is a little disturbance to our north. it's a frontal boundary, a leading edge of cooler air will drop in. you can see the flow out of canada pulling in that cooler air in our direction. we're starting out this morning fairly mild. we'll be near average today in the mid 50's. notice your weekend is cooler, especially sunday. likely not getting out of the upper 40's. we're 48 in boston. lower 50's on the cape.

the new highland ave. bridge is in place. most of the old bridge is down except for the section over the highway. that changes this weekend. here's what you need to know. starting tonight through 2:00 p.m. tomorrow, northbound driver will have to get off 128 at highland ave. and they'll be detoured back onto the highway. then from about 1:00 p.m. saturday until sunday afternoon, southbound drivers will have to face similar detours. anyone driving on highland avenue itself will to do so through this stretch. they're going to have to take a long detour around that area. best advice -- avoid the area if you can. that is the latest. live in needham, antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. erika: if you're hoping to avoid long lines, this is your last day for early voting. there were long lines at boston city hall yesterday.
