at home, others enjoying overtime perks. >> what we found those officers really doing during our five-month investigation. harvey: a weekend and chill -- what parts of the weekend will be chilly us. >> from boston's news leader, this is wcvb newscenter 5 at 5:00. jc: breaking news -- a nypd officer shot and killed in the bronx. the officer was shot in the head. a second officer was shot in the leg and is now in the hospital. it happened while the officers were responding to a call. police say a suspect opened fire on the officers. they shot back and killed him. nearly two dozen shots were fired. information is still coming in and we will bring you more as we get it. ben: three people have been stabbed at rutgers' business school on the new brunswick campus. it happened just a couple of hours ago.

and that the suspect is in custody. no word yet on the severity of the injuries. now we have commitment 2016 coverage. it begins with a live look at the lines of early voters. nearly a million people in massachusetts have made their choice. jc: this is the first year of early voting. mary saladna is that -- is at boston city hall. mary: popular is early voting? look behind me. look at the line. it stretches all the way alongside city hall and across the plaza at this hour. early voting is a big success in massachusetts. it was the last chance to cast her ballot ahead of tuesday's election. >> i have to go to springfield for work on tuesday, so i want

where we have had early voting. it's really great. reporter: more than 900,000 mass residents had voted early. that number should climb i the day's end. >> it looks like we will have a million people. that is encouraging, and not just because it was a good idea, but also it says the level of interest of people is so great in this election. mary: early voting in many cities and towns proved quick and convenient. about 3 million votes were cast in massachusetts in the last election, so early voting could easily make up one third of the total turnout. and they're still about 400 people i would guess in line at city hall and technically, early voting has ended as of 5 p.m., but if they were in line by the cut time, they get to vote tonight. light at city hall, a mary saladna, wcvb newscenter 5.

both hillary clinton and donald trump are trying to pack in as much campaigning as they can. ben: they are both making last-minute trips to the granite state. donald trump was there today. david, what did he say? david: good afternoon. not only are the polls showing a close race in new hampshire, but unlike massachusetts, there is no early voting in new hampshire, so virtually every vote is up for grabs. hampshire country club, donald trump slammed the jaws report. mr. trump: these numbers are an absolute disaster. david: the numbers show unemployment down and wages up, but trump called them "from the." mr. drum: they want to work. they are not working -- mr. trump, they want to work, they

now, the man accused of attacking officers with a bag of hera win. juli mcdonald is in falmouth with more. juli: the 38-year-old is being held on $5,000 cash bail. he is facing heavy charges. the falmouth police chief tells newscenter 5 the arrest was without issues, but when they arrived back at the station, he he pulled the bag out of his underwear, tore it open, and through it contents in the faces of the arresting officers. at investigators believe that it could have been laced with deadly fentanyl. it was all over the officers' clothing and faces. the chief says if it was not handled and controlled exactly

discredited story "a rape on campus." the story gave the account of a woman identified only as jackie, who said she was gang raped by seven men. a police investigation found no evidence to back up jackie's claims. jc: right now, three u.s. service members have been killed in an incident in jordan. jordanian officials say the car they were riding in failed to stop at the gate of king faisal, and that's when gunfire erupted. the jordanian military says one of their air force officers was also injured. an investigation is now underway. ben: we're getting a look at the department of transportation's bridge ict dorchester. mass. -- mass dot is responsible for inspecting 6700 bridges across the commonwealth and making sure they are safe. they inspect underwater foundations, making any repairs if needed. all of the dive team members are certified scuba divers and bridge inspectors. all right, get ready. big traffic problems are about to begin on 128 through needham, as crews tear down the rest of the old highland avenue bridge. starting tonight through 2pm

u.n. secretary general ban-ki moon commemorating the event at the u.n. in new york. so far, 96 countries, including the united states, have formally joined the agreement, amid growing fears that the world is becoming hotter even faster than scientists expected. many more countries are expected to come aboard in the coming weeks and months. ben: former penn state assistant football coach jerry sandusky back in court today, trying to sandusky is serving a 30-to-60 year sentence for abusing 10 boys. his lawyers claim prosecutors withheld evidence that could have helped exonerate the ex-coach. today one of sandusky's victims testified against the request for a new trial. we know more tonight why an engine on this american airlines 767 burst into flames last week, as it was taking off from chicago. tonight, ntsb investigators say a disk in the engine showed signs of fatigue, which led to

here's the problem with all of this. that plane was only built in 2003 so it is not very old. they have more work to do. jc: those planes are out there for tens and tens of years. that would be concerning. anyway, we were not on that flight, so we feel all right. it just felt great. harvey: nice to lead into a weekend that way. we know we are going to turn chillier. we have low temperatures early this morning as the cool air is coming in. we have a mix of sun and clouds and that is the way we are now. most the clouds are gone. north-northwest wind diminishing a little bit. here are your current temperatures.

, that does set the stage for a chilly night. so, this is about the way we will be late tonight and first thing tomorrow morning. i think you could expect a fair amount of frost in a fair amount of our area -- in fact most of our area. but there has not been a widespread frost that has covered all of cape cod yet. this may happen tonight. there cape. tomorrow felt temperatures that will be similar to today and i think you could expect a patchwork sky one more time. winds out of the southwest and they will pick up in the afternoon. this is showing a sprinkle and it's not impossible there could be a sprinkle saturday morning, but i tend to doubt that. there is a week to -- disturbance of the atmosphere.

temperatures will not rise that much. along the coast, the wind could become a little more north-northeast. that would be cold air coming in over the still warm ocean waters. it could cause clouds on sunday. here is a closer look. we start to get the clouds to come down on saturday morning. we wind up with a mixture of sun and ds at sunday. i mentioned the wind coming out of the north-northeast. that could cause a couple of little showers to pop up along the shore. for the most part we are talking about clouds along the coast and eastern massachusetts. now here is election day for us locally. it looks great. it looks like it will be super windy. a nice, pleasant breeze.

ben: we have breaking news at 5:30 p.m. wounded after a shooting in the bronx. the new york times confirming the fatality. the officers were responding to a robbery in an apartment building. when police confronted a suspect in a car, shots were fired. the suspect also killed in the gunfire. jc: and also breaking, three people have been stabbed at at the rutgers university business school in new jersey. it happened just before 3pm police say there is no danger to the campus community right now, and that the suspect is in custody. no word yet on the severity of
