>> wcvb newscenter 5 at 4:00 starts right now. ed: right now on newscenter 5, it all comes down to this. months of campaigns, polls, debates, ads, all leading up to election day. we're picking our new president today. donald trump or hillary clinton. plus, we're out this morning casting their doing that. michael: fromfrom. maria: from the white house to the senate, newscenter 5 has you covered on this election day, beginning with the race for president. clinton and trump have made their public appearances today. now they're hunkered down awaiting results. ed: both in the heart of new york city. hillary clinton in the javits convention center, donald trump taking over the hilton at midtown, new york. let's begin there with ben simmoneau live at the clinton
4:01 pm
ben:good afternoon, ed and maria. you can see the stage, where it will happen tonight, where we'll see hillary clinton, the podium behind us, the stage, tough to tell. it's set up in the shape of the outline of the united states of america. it's a pretty busy javits center this afternoon with media from all over the country and all over the world here. there's a row from other countries -- europe, asia, beyond that. we were talking earlier, hillary clinton, you mentioned, she's from new york. she voted in chappaqua, her home town where she and her husband have lived since 2001. she was greeted by supporters and greeted at the airport when she got home at 3:00 a.m. this morning in westchester county. and she said she feels pretty confident but she also feels humbled. here she is. secretary clinton: i know how much responsibility goes with
4:02 pm
counting on the outcome of this election, what it means for our country and i'll do the very best i can. if i'm fortunate enough to win today. >> we're focused on driving our supporters out to the polls. this election is so important and we don't want anybody to wake up the next day thinking, gosh, i should have participated in this and i didn't. ben: one is telling me they are concentrating on getting the vote out is new hampshire. they say polls are tightening in that state. they feel confident and they have thousands of people -- many from the boston area -- have gone to new hampshire today knocking on doors, reminding people to get out. new hampshire, there's no early voting in new hampshire, unlike massachusetts. so it's very critical, what happens in the granite state today. four electoral votes at stake but that could make the difference in the race tonight. live at the javits center, and we'll be here throughout the
4:03 pm
on new hampshire when we see you at 5:00. ben simmoneau, wcvb newscenter 5. ed: speaking up to polls leading up to election day, it shows clinton with a slight lead over donald trump. maria: but the republican candidate says he's feeling confident. nichole berlie is following donald trump's activity for us tonight. nichole: donald trump scheduled to stay in new york all day. today, that started with him hitting the polls in new york city. trump casting his baltimore today in manhattan. you can see right he greeted poll workers, seemed very relaxed, even lighthearted. prior to hitting the polls, in an election day tradition, he called into fox news to talk about his campaign. mr. trump: it's been a beautiful process. the people of this country are incredible. i've been all over the country. i've met the people at every level. i think if people say what have you learned, that's what i've learned, the people of this
4:04 pm
nichole: our j.c. monahan is at the trump watch headquarters, right now going through security. she'll bring us live reports later this evening. live in the newsroom, nichole berlie, wcvb newscenter 5. ed: let's take an updated look at cnn's projected map of the electoral college. hillary clinton has lost a little ground, dipping below the 270 mark needed to win. donald trump steady at 204. to win, he likely needs to s the battlegrounds of arizona, florida, and new hampshire, along with swinging some of the close states leaning democrat going into today. maria: more than one million massachusetts residents voted early but that did not stop long lines forming at some polling places today. rhondella richardson is live at jamaica plain with more on that. hi, rhondella. rhondella: hello there, this is the kennedy school. we have seen long lines.
4:05 pm
a friend in line because you will likely have to wait in the polling places. it has been steady but massachusetts is bracing to break the record when it comes to voter turnout today. that record, 3,184,000 votes were cast in 2012. mid afternoon here in jamaica plain, voters had a more than two-hour wait. when you look at the lines down the block today, and consider that 1.2 early and absentee voters were already done, it's remarkable. voters say >> i saw the press line, came back later. it was that long. >> someone walk out and say maybe an hour and 15 minutes total. >> you take a third of the turnout out of the equation, which is what early voting did, you should have reduced the pressure on the lines. rhondella: there were a few administrative glitches in marlborough, an equipment
4:06 pm
promptly fixed without impacting the races. the early and absentee baltimores are commingled in the box today with the others being counted tonight and if you are in line, by 8:00 p.m., you will be able to vote. back to you. maria: let's talk new hampshire with granite state playing a 55 55 -- pivotal role. in nashua, by location saw more than a thousand votes cast. that state does not have early voting so donald trump and hillary clinton will rely on ground games to get as many as possible to the polls today. one of three small communities that votes at midnight, hillary clinton winning dixville notch. by the way, a write-in from mitt romney there. trump won nearby mills field
4:07 pm
has correctly picked the eventual winner in three of the last four contests. ed: kelly ayotte and maggie hassan casting their votes this morning. the two are locked in a tight race for ayotte's seat, one of the most closely watched races in the country in the senate. the outcome could help determine the balance of power in the united states senate. real clear politics shows each party has 46 seats that are either safe, leaning that way or not up for election today leaving eight up for grabs. there could be we are covering both campaigns tonight. let's start with reid lamberty outside of the hassan campaign in manchester. reid: governor hassan would like to have the title of senator, crisscrossing the state throughout the day, pushing her message that the new hampshire day is the way in washington and the best way to get things done. it was an early day for the governor, voting with her family in her home town, then visiting
4:08 pm
voters and thanking supporters. it is one of the most closely watched senate races in the nation and could shift the balance of power in the senate. in it, $100 million spent, one of the most expensive. it is the costliest senate race ever in new hampshire, much of it to convince the independent voters. governor hassan said she was pleased with polls. >> people understand what's at stake in this election, whether we're going to continue to work together and make progress so that anybody who works hard has the opportunity to get ahead and stay ahead. reid: polls in new hampshire close at 8:00 so it could be a late night for both senate candidates considering it's a coin toss at this point as to who wins the senate race. maria: some polls show ayotte holding a slim lead there in the granite state.
4:09 pm
-- criss cross new hampshire. she voted with her family in nashua. ayotte has tried to distance herself from donald trump at the top of the ticket. at first she said she would vote for him, then she said she would not. she called him a rolled -- role model, took it back. >> i'm going to stand up to the people of new hampshire, focused on solving problems, getting things done for them. it's such a privilege to continue to work to address our heroin epidemic, better paying jobs, lower healthcare costs and keep our country safe in a dangerous world. maria: observers say ayotte also knows that trump is popular among new hampshire republicans so she can't afford to alienate the base. she hopes her personal contact with voters will make the difference. ed: here in massachusetts, we're not voting for governor or a mayor in boston or a united states senator and most of the
4:10 pm
contestants are not contested at all in the race today so there are three big questions we are deciding. question two expands charter schools in the state. question three bans the confining of farm animals, a situation where they can't move around. and question four would legalize marijuana. those are the three big of the four questions and some towns have a question five, but that's local. wcvb mobile app has you covered wherever you are tonight including realtime results, updated electoral and the changes in the balance of congress. download it free. maria: warm election day. live look over boston where voters are packing the polls right now as we speak and they're going to be doing that for several more hours. boy, do they have a nice day to wait in those lines. harvey: incredible. it's been so clear all day. winds have been very light and temperatures really responded

4:16 pm
guy, great guy, great friend of mine. great, great champion. unbelievable winner. he called today and he said, donald, i support you, you're my friend, and i voted for you. ed: that was donald trump last night claiming that tom brady cast his ballot for him. he said it last night at that rally in new hampshire. but it's not actually clear whether brady a h gisele, are actually trump supporters. maria: over the weekend on instagram, gisele replied, no, capital n, capital o, with an exclamation point when asked if the couple backed donald trump. we do know that tom brady did vote. but he has not said publicly exactly who he voted for. donald trump also claims that man, bill belichick, wrote him a letter of support and he's read some of that letter last night
4:17 pm
denying it but tom quran of comcast sports net reports that bill belichick did endeed -- indeed write that letter. ed: we're taking you through 6:30 tonight and a special hour of coverage begins at 7:00. polls in new england close at 7:00 p.m. so stand by for that, as well. abc has the latest results starting at 8:00, followed by a poll recap on newscenter 5 at 11:00 and when wee will break into programming because the ballot question is important in massachusetts. join us on a special edition of the eye opener tomorrow morning starting at 4:00 a.m. through 7:00 a.m. you can count on newscenter 5 for complete election coverage. we're going to follow other news right now. a georgetown police officer is recovering after a crash in raleigh. state police say the officer was working on a detail on 95 north when a driver plowed into the cruiser. this happened last night. the officer is being treated in

the driver did say on scene. no charges have been announced. the mbta is working toward a more reliable future for the orange line, to increase rider capacity by 40% by adding new cars by 2019. in the meantime, the t is testing a short-term drop-back system involving a two-person inspection of train cars at the end of the line designed to cut down the down time between trains, allowing more trains hour. maria: good news for eversource customers. starting january 1, residential customers in greater boston and metro west who use 600 kilowatt hours of electricity will see bills drop from 136 to 131. residents on the south shore, the cape, greater new bedford will see bills go down from 142
4:19 pm
62 degrees. can you change this? harvey: look at what it was this morning hours ago. we found out maria and ed sleep in a little bit. it was really cold and heavily frosted over early this morning, norwood 23. vineyard was 25, plymouth was 27 and look at the high temperatures today. so yes, we had places jump like 40 degrees from the low temperature to h little bit of a sea breeze kept it a few degrees cooler this afternoon but it's not just that, but the winds have been light and the skies clear. boston still looking great. we're only minutes away from sunset. ouch. 4:29, at least we've had this gorgeous day. with the light breeze off the water, it's cooler in boston. but it's still running mild to the west and north. because the skies are clear and winds are light, and you can see we're running nine, 13 degrees warmer than yesterday late afternoon at this time, we're
4:20 pm
fall off quickly this evening and stabilize later tonight. most places will be, let's say boston in the 40's. worcester, the airport, with 1,000 feet up but still cold air in the lower levels so there will be 30's but we're not going to have 20's around the region tonight. tomorrow's high temperatures, still mild, not quite as warm as today because we're not going to have anywhere near the amount of sunshine we enjoyed. even though our skies are clear, you now can see clouds to the west. moving through portions of ohio, like around cleveland at this time. and they are moving eastward but yet i'm not 100% confident that all of us are going to even see showers tomorrow, because not only do we have this front but we have a wave of low pressure and a lot of the moisture that will be available will contract toward the area of low pressure. so even though showers are approaching, they might not make the trip across the state completely. then we may have an area of rain
4:21 pm
or the cape tomorrow afternoon, very early tomorrow evening. after that, it will clear, and you'll have another day filled with sunshine come thursday. not as warm as today but still, that's pretty good news. then, this is a cold front, way up there. that's going to come charging through during friday. the winds will pick up and the temperatures will start to drop. it may be colder late friday than early friday and friday night will be rather cold and saturday will be kind of chilly but it doesn't look like the kind of cold air that's up to at least around 50, maybe higher than, that and it also looks mild to start the week out next week. so there you go. final hours for voting. no weather problems whatever, just a spot shower possible tomorrow but most of the day in any given location will probably be rain-free. there you go. maria: thank you. an enormous sink hole opens up in a major city. ed: look at this city. still ahead on newscenter 5 at

substantiate that claim and says she will keep an eye on how voters are treated today. north carolina is a critical state for both candidates. much more of our election coverage is just ahead. now to that gigantic sink hole opening up in the heart of a major city in southern japan. ed: it really is amazing. the hole actually swallowed up part of a street, cut off power, water and gas to the city. look at the water just roaring. the sink hole is more than half the size of an olympic pool but as you look at that lo the street, there were no injuries. no one was hurt. it's just a big hole in the ground right now. president obama sticks with his election day tradition. maria: what the commander-in-chief did this morning to get ready of the
