battleground states needed to win the electoral college, despite what was a close popular vote. >> that's not the only breaking headline. republican chris sununu is new governor-elect of new hampshire. the senate race is less clear. currently, too close to call between senator kelly ayotte and governor maggie hassan. >> a hotly contested ballot question in the commonwealth is approved. massachusetts will legalize recreational marijuana. the eyeopener team bringing you all of the election results as some votes still being counted. first to cindy and the forecast. >> we've got a milder start this morning. temperatures about 10 degrees warmer than they were as you were heading out yesterday morning. we're running close to 50. boston into worcester. 30s showing up with increasing cloud cover towards you on the cape. elsewhere, a lot of clouds with showers to the west. these are associated with a cold front that's going to come through and bring a few showers through the day. so the morning commute should

western massachusetts, southern vermont, and southwest new hampshire. a lot of these showers will fall apart toward midday, but there could be a spot shower around, especially from the pike on southward around lunchtime. toward that evening commute, that's when the rain may briefly fill in. so good idea to have that umbrella with you today. temperatures will climb, though, from near 50 this morning into the upper 50s to near 60 this afternoon. just a little bit cooler out through the worcester hills. let's get you to the roads. good morning, olessa. >> good morning, cindy. live look outs that's the northbound side heading toward the bottom of the screen. so far nice and quiet start. all the overnight construction is just about gone. no problems in boston. road work in the final stages 93 northbound by route 24. construction already picked up on the expressway. on 128 nearby highland avenue. the pike, eastbound ride, 15 minutes 495 to 128.

this is a safety precaution. post-9/11 in front of the buildings. on the other side we have about a dozen trump supporters, about a dozen or so hillary supporters. lots of words going back and forth between these two groups. lot of police presence because this has been a divisive campaign, bitter, historic and also an election that really few accurately. so let's take a look at the headlines. donald trump swept the battleground states. he also carried states not won by a republican since the 1980s. this election is having a ripple effect on financial markets as investors worry about the future. the new president-elect tried to strike a conciliatory tone, including toward hillary clinton. >> i congratulated her and her

the eye's ben simmoneau has been covering the clinton camp. he's in new york as well. >> a bleary-eyed new york city this morning. we are inside the javits center last night. the crowd very confident in the early hours, but right around the 9:00 hour when it looked like some of these big states were going donald trump's way -- florida, north carolina, a very close race in virginia, which hillary clinton did manage to squeak out. the crowd basically deflated like air out of a balloon and then it was downhill from there si night. we have not heard from hillary clinton. she was watching the results just down 5th avenue from donald trump at the peninsula hotel in new york city. we do know she called donald trump in the early-morning hours to concede this race to him. her campaign chair, john podesta, went to the javits center to speak to supporters there. have a listen. >> i want every person across the country who supported hillary to know that your voices

expressed there. again, hoping to get some reaction this morning from governor baker to the election of donald trump. live at the state house, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. >> sera, thank you. the election outcome is having a major impact on the financial markets this morning. u.s. stock futures are down. right now the dow at one point plunged more than 600 -- about 600 points. it's now about 300 points down. markets around the world have been jolted. asian stocks lower this morning. investors uncertainties in trade and immigration and other geopolitical tensions. >> shifting to new hampshire. the u.s. senate race still too close to call. the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is live in concord where this closely-watched race, where it stands right now, antoinette. >> emily, all along this race has been a very tight one between kelly ayotte and governor maggie hassan. and that continues right through this morning with those votes still being counted.

>> erika is here with the changes on capitol hill. >> a victory in pennsylvania giving republicans control of the senate. here's a breakdown of how the senate will look next year with a gop majority. republicans have a 51-47 edge, two races including new hampshire remain outstanding. in louisiana, the seat will head to a runoff election next month. focusing on the house, republicans have control. republicans have won a total of 230 seats to the democrats 190. house speaker paul ryan winning his reelection campaign. >> massachusetts legalizing recreational marijuana use. >> the rules going into place after question four passed in the commonwealth. the cap on charter schools in the commonwealth. why teachers union say it was the best decision for public

>> breaking overnight, donald trump is the next president of the united states. the republican now the first person to win the post without having held public office or having served in the military. cindy, kind of a mild start. >> not as chilly. we've got rain on the way. we're still dealing with extreme drought. our deficit continues to grow in the boston area. we're behind nearly in the worcester area. we could use more rain than we're getting. maybe a tenth of an inch today and that's about it with the areas focused on southeastern massachusetts. towards midday, especially the afternoon and evening, the chance for a few showers ramps up a little bit. you can see that here in your 12-hour forecast. near 50 this morning with a lot of clouds. it's mostly cloudy throughout the day. as we get toward about 5:00 this afternoon in the boston area, that's where we have a better

running mostly in the upper 40s boston and worcester. on the cape, low-to-mid 30s for you. low 40s on the north shore in beverlily and towards fitchburg. here's the area of showers to the west. there's an area of low pressure developing along this front. it's going to take a lot of that moisture and focus it to the temperatures much cooler. once that front crosses the area, temperatures won't be as mild tomorrow. but we'll do ok. we'll come close to 60 in boston. mid-to-upper 50s from the worcester hills through merry -- meri mack valley. towards lunchtime, good idea to have an umbrella.

a better chance of showers from boston southward filling in toward the evening commute. toward about 8:00 tonight, showers consolidate along the cape. we're mostly in the 30s, a few upper 20s in our coldest suburbs. high pressure for thursday. so it's back to sunshine tomorrow, but we'll watch this front to the north. it's going to bring in colder weather for the weekend. it's giving us a friday. so during the morning hours, the winds will come from the west-southwest and shift to the north-northwest during the afternoon, gusting close to 40 miles per hour. any outdoor plans on veterans' day will be impacted by the winds. cold weather for the weekend, but we should moderate on sunday. >> expressway by the gas tank northbound side heading to the top of the screen.

possess, use, and transfer marijuana, including edibles. there's a one-ounce limit on possession. adults are allowed to possess up to 10 ounces of pot secured locked up if their home and -- in their home and you can grow up to six pot plants. overnight supporters celebrating the win >> we are on a new path to a superior system. voters in massachusetts should be very proud. >> governor baker releasing a statement last night saying his administration will, quote, work closely with lawmakers, educators and public safety and public health professionals to ensure that transition protects the interests of our communities and families. the last day of prohibition on adult use of marijuana is december 14. >> doug, thank you.

recreational marijuana. california and nevada voters also passed recreational use. arizona and maine results are still being counted at this hour. it's very close in maine. colorado, washington, oregon and alaska have legalized adult use of pot. bay state voters rejecting the expansion of charter schools by a wide margin. more than 62% of voters opposed question tw teachers unions and civil rights groups who worked to defeat charter schools say they take up too much money, taking too much money away from traditional public schools. the state attorney general maura healey is applauding the outcome. >> i support charter school as places of innovation. i think they are a supplement to district schools. we have to do everything we can

the country. >> governor charlie baker, a prominent supporter of charter school expansion, said that, while question two was not successful, he's proud of the historic investment his administration has made, he says, in public schools and new proposals to make college more affordable. >> voters say yes to question 3. this deals with confining farm animals. a yes bans a practice that prevents from lying down or turning freely. bay state voters defeat question one, expansion of slot machines. more than 60% voted against the question. it's worded in a very specific w way. this morning we're getting a closer look at voter turnout in massachusetts. >> the milestone voters may have hit. >> breaking news at 5:30. a deadly night in boston.

president-elect of the united states. the popular vote still a very thin margin, but the electoral college put the gop nominee over the top. >> this is a huge story and we have big eyeopener team coverage with crews covering all of the angles. first want to get to cindy, who has the forecast. it's a pretty mild start compared to the last few days. >> you'll want the umbrella because we'll see a few showers, especially during come through. rainfall amounts will be meager. tenth of an inch or less for most areas. that will be mainly across southeastern massachusetts. you can see the rain cutting through parts of eastern pennsylvania, eastern new york state, and working in our direction with a cold front. wave of low pressure developing along this front is going to target areas to our south and focus a lot of that wet weather over southeastern massachusetts today. but look at the difference in temperature. emily mentioned it's milder this morning.

on other side of the front, notice the upper 20s toward the great lakes. that's cooler air that will spill in behind the front tonight. we've got the readings in upper 40s in worcester. mid 30s on the cape. lower 40s on the north shore. so not as chilly, but the clouds are here. mid and upper 50s by lunch and actually top out today close to 60 degrees in most areas. but those showers will be moving in. the morning hourser lunchtime, couple of showers. better chance towards the evening commute. nothing heavy expected. a lot of this will exit the cape after 8:00 tonight. the skies clear and that brings the sunshine tomorrow. chilly start tomorrow morning. starting out in lower 30s. gusty winds expected on veterans' day. let's get to the roads.

>> hillary clinton not far from trump tower, waking up to a stunner. the race that she was confident in winning now gone. she did send her campaign chairman, john podesta, to the javits center last night to tell the crowd of supporters gathered there to go home. he did say -- he tried to that hillary clinton called donald trump to concede the race. florida, pennsylvania, wisconsin, ohio, north carolina all going red for the republican. the gop, donald trump, just sweeping up those battleground states, especially across pennsylvania and into the midwest. we expect to hear from hillary clinton this morning.

this race between governor maggie hassan and incumbent senator kelly ayotte. >> as you know, seeing on your screen, we're very upbeat about where this race is. >> while we're feeling good right now, this race is still too close to call. >> both camps seemed optimistic and pretty upbeat. they both want to report good news to their supporters this morning. but this race is still toolo being counted this morning. live in concord, new hampshire, antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. >> despite that race, republican wave in congress. a victory giving the gop control of the senate. republicans have 51 seats to the democrats 47. new hampshire is still too close to call. louisiana will go to a runoff next month.

doug meehan, newscenter 5. >> massachusetts voters defeat question one, the expansion of slot machines. more than 60% voted against the question which called for a second parlor. voters ejected the expansion of charter schools. more than 62% voters opposed question two while nearly 38% supported the question. question 3, a yes bans any prac calves, and hens from lying down, standing up or turning around freely. also, republican chris sununu is elected governor of new hampshire. he beat democratic rival colin van ostern. sununu told supporters that the country is going to need to heal after this election cycle. van ostern has not addressed his supporters. sununu replaces outgoing governor maggie hassan. we're following breaking news from mattapan.

shooting on savannah avenue. police responded to the scene about 10:45, found the man suffering with a gunshot wound to his upper body. he was pronounced dead. police have no leads on a suspect. they are asking anyone with information to call them. >> a salem, massachusetts, police officer is due in court after he was arrested for a rape charge. brian butler was arrested yesterday in connection with an details are not known. the chief says she taking time to deal with the personal matter, but is fully committed to her fellow officers. up the coast, a search is under way in gloucester after two people were swept out to sea while fishing. coast guard says the two people were fishing and went along the waterfront when they were hit by a wave at around 3:00 yesterday afternoon. one person was able to swim back, but lost sight of the other person.
