it was to congratulate him on winning the election. i had a chance to invite him to come to the white house tomorrow to talk about making sure that there is a successful transition between our presidencies. it is no secret that the president elect and i have significant differences. remember, eight years ago, president bush and i had significant differences. president bush's team could not have been more had a smooth transition so that we could hit the ground running. one thing you realize quickly in this job is that the presidency and the vice presidency is visiting than any -- is bigger than any of us. i've instructed my team to follow the example that president bush's team has set and work as hard as we can to make sure that this is a successful transition for the

12:23 pm
president clinton will continue to do great work for people here in the united states and all around the world. everybody is sad when their side loses an election. but the day after, we have to remember we are all actually on one team. this is an intramural scrimmage. we are not democrats first, not republicans first, we are americans first. we all want what's best for this country. that is what i heard in mr. trump's remarks last night. that's what i heard when i spoke to them directly and i was heartened by that. that is what the country needs. a sense of unity.
12:24 pm
-- a sense of inclusion. a respect for our institutions, our way of life, rule of law and respect for each other. i hope he maintains that spirit throughout this transition and i certainly hope that's how his presidency has a chance to begin. i also told my team today to keep their heads up because the remarkable work that thav , often without a lot of fanfare, often with a lot of attention, working agencies, work in obscure areas of policy that make government run better and make it more responsive and make it more efficient and make it more service friendly so that it's actually helping more people,

the next president with a stronger better country than the one that existed eight years ago. so win or lose in this election, that was always our mission from day one. and everyone on my team should be extraordinarily proud of everything they've done. so should all the americans i've had a chance to meet all across this cry work of building on that progress every single day. teachers and schools, doctors in your clinics. -- in er clinics. small businesses starting something up making sure they're treating employees well. all the important work that's done by moms and dads and families and congregations and every state.

this was a long and hard fought campaign. a lot of our fellow americans are exalting today. a lot are less so. that's the nature of democracy. sometimes contentious and noisy. it's not always inspiring. but to the young p , who got into politics for the first time , and may be disappointed by the results, i want you to know you have to stay encouraged. dunkage cynical -- don't get cynical. don't ever think you chemical difference. secretary clinton said this morning fighting for what it's right -- fighting for what is right is worth it.

sometimes you lose an election. the path this country has taken has never been a straight line. we zig and zag. sometimes we move in ways that some people think is forward and others moving back. that's ok. i've lost elections before. joe [laughter] >> that's the way politics works sometimes. we try really hard to persuade people that we are right and then people vote. and then if we lose, we learn from our mistakes. we do some reflection, we like
12:28 pm
we brush ourselves off, we get b back in the arena. we try even harder . we all go forward with a presumption of good faith in our fellow citizens. because that presumption of good faith is essential to a vibrant and functioning democracy. that's how this country has moved forward for 240 years. it's how it's how we've expanded the rights of our founding to reach all of our citizens. it's how we've come this far. and that's why i'm confident that this incredible journey that were on his americans will go on. and i'm looking forward to doing everything i can to make sure that the next president is successful in that.

, i think of this job as being a relay runner. you take the baton, you run your race and hopefully by the time you handed off you are a little further ahead. you made a little progress. i can say we have done that and i want to make sure that handoff is well executed because ultimately we are all on the same team. thank you very much, everybody. >> president obama saying he told his team to keep their heads up and lead by example. leaving with a spring in his step. might have been forced, but there's rooted and respect for the peaceful transition, and for our institutions he said for the rule of law, his respect ffr democracy. we are all on the same team now, we must all root for the success of donald trump.
12:30 pm
shuck sugar coat the differences, we we have to go forward in the spirit together. >> there are people that are very, very distressed today. people who supported him and hillary clinton who really are wor worried about the country where they just can't imagine a trump presidency, and he is trying to make it seem as normal as humanly possible. this is the way it works. democracy is messy. it's noisy. some elections. you take the baton and go forward, and this is not the end of the world, but i think that was -- that's why he is doing that because he knows that some of their followers a state of true distress. >> he knows it's what he must say. and he said from one baton to another, the metaphor might break down based on what you were saying.
