maggie. >> they cheered on the statehouse steps as maggie declared victory even before the final count. >> i'm proud to stand here as the next united states senator from new hampshire. >> in fact election workers added up the results from around the state they found hassan with 48.03% of the vote and republican incumbent kelly ayotte with 47.89%. a difference of 1,023 votes -- about 1/10 of 1%. >> ayotte would have to pay $500 to request a statewide recount in. that case all the ballots are brought to the statehouse and checked again. he and his deputies make the final decision on which ballots will count but that decision can be appealed to a five member board. >> that would be the end of the process at the state level. >> ayotte, who at one point overnight also held the lead told her supporters before going to bed that she felt good about

harvey joining us. rain out there and we see the little rain behind you. >> a little green. there have been a few drops of rain. it's now slid offshore. the other area that i see from southern new hampshire on down to northwest massachusetts but the only place i can even see a few sprinkles that's reaching the ground was up in jafr, new hampshire. even as this moves south and east during the course of the evening there could be a few sprinkles about and moving southward. the skies will start to clear temperatures will start to cool because north and west it's already cooling down. so boston will drop into the low 40s after midnight and then probably into the upper 30s by tomorrow morning but some of our suburbs will be at frosty levels. at least to start. we'll let you know about every single thing that will happen after that. >> salem police officer faces charges accused of sexually assaulting a mail inmate at the station.

>> seven people killed and more than 30 hurt when a london trail derailed this morning. it was riding a tight corner during a rainstorm. it was apparently speeding. the tram driver has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter. >> california police say the man shot dead after opening fire on a neighborhood was binging on drugs. it happened east of taking drugs at least a day earlier, causing his wife and two kids to leave their home on monday night. >> the suspect began shooting randomly, ended up killing a police at bay for hours. two others were also wounded by gunshots and two people are dead tonight after a massive tornado in central italy. we just showed you this. take a look at the cell phone video showing large lightning

continues to rebuild from a series of earthquakes that started back in august. the two victims were killed in two towns close to rome on sunday, and many were also injured. >> a view from space. nasa snapped this picture and you can see those are huge plumes of smoke over the western part of the state. fire officials say wildfires are burning at several locations in the mountains there and they also burn bans are in effect throughout the region. >> what about our drought? that's done, right? >> oh, no, i wouldn't say that's done. harv: we need more moisture. i don't see much happening. maybe a week from now. i see the possibility of rain in about a week. if you look hyped us there is some rain but most of it is in new york and new jersey.

pressure is. but look at this. we hit 61 today in boston. even without too much sun. there was this little bit in the morning. notice high temperatures chillier to the north and west. a front is coming through the boston area. we know that because temperatures just starting to fall. the wind is now around to the northwest at 13 miles per hour. but again, very light sprinkles. still a couple of rounds but it doesn't amount to much. a lot of this is not reaching the ground and that's nothing more than sprinkles also. there next few hours. i'm not expecting a whole lot of rain by any means. to the north and west we're still in the 50s. north and west you can see places in the 40. to the south, 50s at this hour. notice the wind direction coming around to the northwest letting us know that the cooler air will slowly be filtering in overnight. by time we get to tomorrow morning, we'll see some

at that time, the skies will be clear so you have to be ready for another frosty start. even places like taunton, bedford and norwood, all around the freezing mark and there could be some frost right along the immediate she line and the cape. the temperature may still be above freezing. tomorrow looks like a nice late fall day without too much wind. a good deal of sunshine. after the chilly start the temperatures will bounce back to at least 50 to 55 degrees. you saw some of that rain around new york city. that's because of this area of low pres. east. not a big problem for us. there is a clearing that comes in. the next notable change for us is going to be this cold front. it's going to be coming through here right around noon time on friday. so it means ahead of it, it won't be that cold at all. it should be in the 50s on friday but once that front comes through, a few hours later, towards sunset, all friday night, colder, blustery air will come in on gusty northwesterly winds that means the weekend will get off to a cold and windy

but will be cold, with probably the entire area below the freezing mark. here are a couple of spots of light rain that could be around for an her or two this evening from north to south and there is the clearing that follows as we take a closer look. a few high clouds for tomorrow. friday, that's when the front comes through but it has very little moisture with it so it will be relatively mild in the morning. high, thin clouds and then in the afternoon is when it starts to get windy and then late in the day the temperatures start to tumble. so that's what weta by the way, look at saturday. starts out clear though it will be cold and all during the day on saturday we should have sunshine. still be a cold day for saturday. >> there you go. your next seven days, we're putting a high impact day on friday. the wind will get strong during the afternoon and evening hours. that's when we'll see gusts 20 to 30 miles per hour or even higher at that time. notice the weekend, early saturday, upper 20s on average. so the weekend gets off to a

in the mid-50s for sunday afternoon. sunday will be the milder of the two weekend days but look at the bright sunshine for both days and look at monday. about 64 degrees. so very mild early next week and then a possibility of some significant wet weather around the middle of next week. >> it should be nice for the patriots game. >> oh, yeah. >> your economy jet blue has added another cross country route connecting fort lauderdale, florida, and long beach, california. on may 3 the airline will restart service it continued in 2011. the start comes as the airline has beefed up schedules in both of those cities over the past year. >> there is a recall. it will issue 500 drones that they sold but they are not offering a replacement. they did not say exactly what caused the power loss but said no injuries or property damage

a new study agrees. finding compared to people when sleep between seven and eight hours, those who skimped on sleep drank 21% more sugared sweetened beverages including soda. less sleep also meant more caffeine which may make them stay up later. all of this according to a national survey of dietary habits. empty calories with no nutritional value it's a straight line between people who habitually sleep less pe who put themselves at greater risk for weight gain and diabetes. of course, we can't get a good night's sleep every night but resist the urge when you can to react by heading for more sugar and caffeine. the standard medical mondaytra, eat right and exercise will generally lead to better sleep as well. and here's an extra tip. cut down caffeine consumption within six hours of bedtime and don't try for sweet dreams by reaching for extra sugar. i'm dr. timothy johnson.
