in boston. the skies have cleared out. however, there's wind out there, especially in the cape. so that wind will be noticeable. windchills are running a little bit colder than these readings. we have dropped to 29 on the thermometers in orange. 34 worcester, 40 in boston. mid-to-upper 40s in the cape where we have a little bit of cloud cover lingering here. otherwise, we've got clear skies, high pressure nosing in. today will feature a blend of sun and clouds. clouds may fill in from the north and west. in between, good amount of sunshine, especially by lunch. sun is up at 6:29. by lunch, we're around 50 degrees. we should top out in the lower 50s this afternoon. looking for a high of 53 boston, low 50s on the cape and as warm as 54 in lawrence today. not a bad thursday weatherwise. let's get you to the roads. >> good morning. live look. a check of the expressway.

the northbound side, so far so good. overnight construction left over 93 by route 24 northbound side. that's on the shoulder. construction wrapped up by highland avenue. pike is quiet. 15-minute eastbound ride 495 to 128. 93 south no problem. so far trains and buses on schedule. >> protests coast to coast continuing in the overnight hours. thousands of people in cities ar streets following the election of donald trump. the demonstrations a display of division after a call for unity from the president-elect. >> the eyeopener's sera congi. >> they chanted "not my president," considered one of the largest protests in boston. an estimated 4,000 walking to

parts of beacon and boylston streets shut down by the demonstration. chants of "we will not be silenced"erupting from the crowd. >> there's a lot of pain especially for people of color. >> it hurts my heart that people are fearful for their lives. >> the protests were peaceful. police did not make a single arrest. sera congi, >> in just hours, the president-elect will take a critical step toward assuming the oval office. he'll meet with a man who has been a fierce critic -- president obama. erika tarantal is here to set the stage for what we can expect today. >> there's been a lot of talking about coming together, but there's no question this meeting could be awkward. here's what to watch for today. president obama will welcome president-elect trump at the white house at 11:00 this morning.

michelle obama will meet with melania trump. vice president joe biden will sit down with mike pence. we're getting a clearer picture of what a trump white house could look. alabama senator jeff sessions, rudy giuliani, and chris christie, newt gingrich. abc news will have a special report when the president-elect arrives at the white house today. you can watch that on channel 5. is backing away from his proposal to ban muslims from entering the u.s. if you go to his campaign website, the statement issued months ago has disappeared. that ban called for a shutdown of muslims from entering the country until lawmakers, quote, figure out what is going on. the president-elect has a new website asking for your ideas. greatagain.gov launched by trump's transition team is up and running this morning.

for national security and the economy there. new numbers show worcester voters went to the polls in the largest numbers in 40 years. the telegram reports preliminarily estimates show more than 65,000 worcester residents voted tuesday. those account for nearly 63% of the worcester residents registered to vote. the city saw its highest voter turnout in 1976, the election between ford and carter. nationally, voter turnout this morning, especially in urban areas. >> there are concerns from parents and students at a boston high school where a student was stabbed. the eye's todd kazakiewich is there with steps being taken. >> the student was stabbed in the cafeteria. the question is, how was another student able to bring a knife into school in the first place?

out yesterday, leading to one of the teens involved being stabbed in the leg. the victim is expected to recover. the stabbing suspect was arrested. no word this morning on what charges that student is facing. there will be an increased police presence here at the school this morning in addition to counselors on hand in case any students need to talk. reporting live in brighton, todd kazakiewich, wcvb newscenter 5. >> todd, thank you. a bw representing a plainville woman. prosecutors say is responsible for her boyfriend's suicide. a judge ruled evidence on michelle carter's cell phone and laptop can be used in the case against her. the judge also ruled statements she made to police can also be used in the upcoming trial. a boyfriend, 18-year-old conrad roy, killed himself by filling his truck with carbon monoxide from the exhaust in 2014. a salem, massachusetts police

man in custody at the police station. investigators say brian butler fondled the inmate and performed a sex act on him in a police headquarters broom closet last week. butler, married to the salem police chief, mary butler. he's on paid leave from his job. >> 5 investigates exposing secret deals for police officers accused of misconduct. they are called carney letters and they are in which prosecutors agree not to pass criminal charges so that officers will talk about what has happened. some of the allegations are serious, including leaving the scene of an accident, obstruction of justice and excessive force. in some situations, the officers are allowed to quietly leave the force and find work in other sensitive public positions. attorney general maura healy is defending the carney letter deal.

because we rebound on sunday. tomorrow into saturday, that jet stream is taking a dip here over the northeast. that will bring down some of the coldest air of the season. but it doesn't last because the jet starts to lift northward on sunday and temperatures will be moderating once again. so up and down with the temperatures. right now it's 29 in orange. mid and upper 40s in the cape. you'll notice the breezy active this morning, making it there are clouds on the south shore down to the cape and the island where we did showers into the overnight. those are long gone now and the clouds will be clearing out later this morning. we've got high pressure from the west. this is going to give us a nice day and a frontal system tomorrow. we've got sunshine midday into the early afternoon. by late afternoon, a few clouds may spill from the north. so north and west of boston

but it's a pretty quiet day. the winds shift around to the southwest as we get into the afternoon. that is a mild wind direction for us. so look at these highs to around 50 in worcester, 53 in boston, close to average for this time of year. as warm at 54 nashua. lower 50s on cape cod. so a pretty nice afternoon on the way. tonight doesn't get that cold because the winds continue from the southwest. we're mostly in the 40s overnight. we start out mild tomorrow, but by noon, here comes this front. as it drops th passing clouds. but, wow, the winds pick up behind it in the afternoon and usher in much colder air. so veterans' day the an impact weather day. gusty winds lunchtime through the evening hours. we could see gusts close to or surpassing 30 miles per hour. windchills will be an issue saturday morning. it's going to feel like it's in the 20s. windchills hold in the 30s throughout the day.

temperatures in the 50s in the afternoon sunday. but sunday night into monday morning, check out the moon. it's a supermoon. this is the closest full moon we have had since back in 1948. so nearly 70 years. it's also going to make the tides very high. so toward the middle of next week on wednesday, a chance of rain coming in, that could lead to coastal flooding. we'll keep an eye on that for you. >> i'm looking at that 60-something. >> that's not bad. that's is doing. >> the ride has been busy. a live look for you. in the distance is 93 and sommerville. this stretch of 93 looks good. we're watching a problem north of town, 93 crash in andover. right now they have the right and left lane closed and only the center lane is getting by. so expect delays there, minor injuries reported.

>> boston woman is dead days after being hit by a septic truck in woburn. 67-year-old denise hirschel and a 71-year-old man were crossing the street near the city hall earlier this month when they were hit. they were both taken to the hospital after the crash. police say the man recovered, but denise hirschel died from her injuries on sunday. the driver did stay at the scene for the investigation. >> fallout at a westport farm unsafe conditions. that property owner has been ordered to stop housing animals he owns and remove them from the property. however, the order does not extend to animals the farm operator does not own. the town legal expert is still reviewing the order ahead of a december 7 hearing. a medical center in portland, maine, is postponing procedures as doctors try to diagnose a patient they believe may have a

investigators say brian butler fondled an inmate and performed a sex act on him in a police headquarters broom closet last week. butler is married to salem police chief mary butler. she's taken a leave of absence. >> a massachusetts state trooper will be spending the next 120 days behind bars. john basler was found guilty of drunk driving and other charges in connection with the deadly crash in plymouth in 2013 which killed 64-year-old susan macchi and her daughter juliet. john basler was acquitted on motor vehicular manslaughter and homicide charges. he remains suspended without pay. >> mexico votes down same-sex marriage. the effort lost on a 19-8 vote in a lower house of congress. mexico's supreme court ruled last year it was unconstitutional for states to ban same-sex marriage. but no laws have been rewritten to reflect the decision.

of two people buried on a suspected serial killer's property in south carolina. the coroner says a married couple in their 20s was shot to death, buried on the property for about a year. the man was arrested last week after police found a woman chained in one of his storage buildings. >> brad pitt is cleared of child abuse accusations. a source tells the "associated press" the department of angeles did not find evidence that brad pitt committed child abuse during a fight on a private plane in september. the actor is currently battling for joint custody of his six children with angelina jolie, who filed for divorce later that month. >> could your afternoon snack be taking a toll on the quality of your sleep? researchers say people who sleep less than five hours a night are 21% more likely to go for a sugary caffeinated drink in the

kind of on the northern extent of cloudiness through the cape and the islands. elsewhere, skies are clear. 20s from orange on westward to the mid and upper 40s in the cape. boston 40 degrees. north of town from the north shore into southern new hampshire, low-to-mid 30s. it's a chilly start. the clouds on the cape should be exiting after about 8:00 this morning. we enjoy a lot of sunshine with late-day clouds from the north and west. today as high pressure noses in. the temperatures come up pretty quickly. by lunch, upper 40s to around 50. lower 50s for highs this afternoon. 53 in boston. about 50 in worcester, 54 in nashua. so not bad today. the temperatures hold tonight in the 40s with more of a southwesterly wind. that flow is ahead of this arctic front. it should come through dry midday.
