a windy day in store. cindy: around lunchtime, you're going to go what is happening? the winds really pick up and the temperatures start dropping. so kind of a backwards day temperaturewise. it really isn't bad out the door. we have reading in the 40's. low 50's on cape cod. 47 in boston. 44 in worcester. even 48 in fitchburg. you can see the skies are mainly clear this morning as well. look to the north. there are clouds, a few rain and snow showers as you head u the canadian border all associated with a front that's going to be dropping southward with some passing clouds as we get toward late morning and lunchtime. you can see them here. by 11:00 a.m., the temperature comes up to 56, and then by 5:00 p.m., it drops down to 46 degrees. winds shift to the northwest, and they are going to get strong. gusts 30, 40 miles an hour. on the cape, we have a wind advisory at 1:00 p.m. have clothes with you. be prepared for wind chills down in the 30's here by 5:00 this

coming up for today. more on your weekend forecast ahead. let's get you out on the roads. good morning, olessa. olessa: a pretty quiet start. here's a live look at the expressway by the south bay mall. that's the northbound side. so far traffic is nice and light. let's go to the maps and check the rest of your ride. overnight construction wrapped up. road work as you travel south of town along 93. that's out of your way northbound by route 124. 128,on north of town, so far no problems. 93 south looks good. no issues there heading out of methuen and down to the leverett connector, and so far we're expecting trains and buses to start the morning on schedule. now keep in mind needham line service is suspended along the entire line beginning last night. it will stay suspended through sunday. there is no alternate buses. emily? emily: olessa, thanks. breaking overnight, a woman seriously hurt in this car crash on 495 in marlborough. this is the scene about 11:30

police say only one car was involved and it rolled over. that woman was flown to u-mass medical center for treatment. the cause of the crash remains under investigation. also breaking overnight, protests cross the line into riots as thousands of people fill the streets of portland, oregon. right now, several people are under arrest, and it marks the second night of demonstrations since the election of donald trump. randy: and the president-elect does have a response to this. the eyeopener's erika tarantal tracking all of the overnig developments. erika: well, many of these protests have been mostly peaceful. that did change in portland overnight. this is video of the massive crowd from the air. i want to show you the scene on the ground. protestors turned violent, setting fires, trashing streets, and at least one case smashing a woman's car windshield with a baseball bat. there were a number of protests in several states overnight. some shut down highways in colorado and california, for example. president-elect donald trump took to twitter to take on the

presidential election." this coming just hours after mr. trump sat down with president obama for the first time. >> the meeting lasted for almost an hour and a half, and it could have -- as far as i'm concerned, it could have gone on for a lot longer. erika: there were no signs of the frequent animosi w years. mr. trump met with paul ryan and mitch mcconnell. surreal moments even by washington moments given the rhetoric we've seen throughout the campaign. emily? emily: thank you. attorneys for trump say they'll enter settlement talks in the president-elect's upcoming trial involving his now-defunct trump university. the class-action fraud lawsuit filed in 2010 alleges the university failed to keep its promise to teach real estate success. former students say they spent

false impression that the school was accredited. trump's attorneys ask that the november 28th trial be delayed until after inauguration day in january, and the judge suggested that both sides try to settle. randy: right now a criminal investigation is underway after the death of an infant. this morning there are several unanswered questions surrounding the death of a 5-week-old baby. at this time, no charges have been filed. sources tell 5 investigates that a drug overdose might have been contributed t unconscious inside a home on harrison place. investigators were called to the home at around noon yesterday. they stayed on the scene well into the night. video shot last night shows them leaving there with bags of evidence. sources tell 5 investigates the infant was in bed with those unconscious adults. a 19-year-old woman and 23-year-old man. neighbors are in shock over what's happened here. >> i've seen them walking up and down the street. they seem very nice, very quiet,

could be true. randy: sources say investigators are looking into the possibility that while in bed, one of the adults rolled over onto the infant. the state released this statement saying the department of children families received a report and is investigating in collaboration with law enforcement. d.c.f. goes on to say that due to the ongoing criminal investigation, there will be no further information. a judge awards cambridge couple who successfully sued their irish nanny over the death of their baby, 1-year-old rehma sabir, who died back in 2013. aisling brady mccarthy was accused of murder but the charges were dropped after the medical examiner changed the baby's cause of death to undetermined. the family's lawyer says that mccarthy, who may not have the $4 million, but the award will

emily: and mbta bus driver facing charges right now accuse of hitting a vehicle and driving away. the eyeopener's sera congi is live in stoneham where surveillance cameras caught the end of this wild ride. sera? sera: emily, it all came to an end here on main street in stoneham after passengers took action and called 9-1-1. surveillance video from a nearby business captures the moment state police cruis the old dairy dome here in stoneham. the crash happened in melrose after 5:00. the route 132 bus allegedly struck a parked van, and witnesses tell us the t operator got out of the bus to look at the damage but then drove off, and that is when passengers called 9-1-1. investigators are now looking into weather the driver was under the influence of prescription medication. he's been summonsed to court for

causing property damage. ahead in our next half hour, we'll hear from some of the passengers on that bus. live in stoneham, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: all right, sera. thank you. and imagine the pay for a job skyrocketing. nearly 600% overnight. 5 investigates found that's the deal the state gave some bridge workers on a publicly funded job. the blynman bridge in gloucester. 5 bridge operators are paid $75 to $125 an hour. it's a bigger paycheck than the governor of our state. and it's a job that used to pay only $13 an hour. the massive increase in pay for the bridge tenders kicked in thanks to a state contract for maintenance on the bridge, which

increase. >> blynman bridge is an example why the state's wage law is out of control. emily: massachusetts is one of only states in the country that sets the prevailing wage rates solely on union contracts. randy: right now, bourne police are stepping up patrols as they search for a man wanted for the attack on a 14-year-old girl. police say the man jumped the teen and attempted to strangle her as she walked to her bus stop on puritan road yesterday. that's when a witness stepped in. the suspect took of older light-colored sedan. right now, a new hampshire man is held without bail accused of posing as an f.b.i. agent. but what police say they found on this m.i.t. employee suggests he may have had a violent plan. prosecutors say gannon leblanc showed up at a couple's arlington home wednesday night wearing an f.b.i. cap and asking about a fugitive.

suspicious. they called police. >> that's what they said alerted them to the fact that it was strange, like, why would an f.b.i. person show up and ask to use the bathroom. randy: officers found leblanc at a nearby bus stop. they found a loaded business toll, a stun gun, a ski mask and rope. emily: more charges could b charged in connection with a deadly home invasion in orange. 77-year-old joanne fisher has died from injuries she suffered in last month's attack. her 95-year-old husband, thomas harty, was stabbed to death. the suspects, brittany smith and joshua hart, remain behind bars, and they're due back in court next month. 5:10 now. american bald eagles in need of rescue. randy: the fight landing these birds in a tight spot.

good morning, eyeopener. boom! reporter: oh, yeah. randy: wcvb proud to partner with home base for tonight's veterans day special. home base is shining the light on and helping heal invisible wounds of war. we have some great stories from some really noble veterans in our area. so i hope you'll join us. it starts tonight at 7:00, two hours. emily: we should say to you thank you for your service. else. if you have a wake-up call, it doesn't have to be as fancy as randy's. that was pretty good. randy: i tried my best. hitting it out of the park. okay. cindy: well, it's a good thing they're not playing baseball at fenway. the winds would be carrying that ball all around. we've got a southwesterly wind, 10, 15 miles per hour, not terribly windy, but as the day wears on, the winds are going to

notice around lunchtime right through the afternoon, these are sustained winds up around and over 20 miles an hour and they will be gusting higher than that. by lunchtime, gusting to 30 and higher on the cape. these winds are with us through the evening hours shifting to the northwest. and that northwesterly wind is going to bring in some colder air. there is a wind advisory on the cape. here we could see gusts closer to 40 miles per hour. temperatures running in the 40's right now in most spots, although some 50's on the cape. 47 bo new hampshire, northern worcester county, but the source of this cold air that we have been talking about is still up in canada. it is going to be pouring down into southern new england as we go flew the day. the leading edge of this cold frontal boundary is producing a little bit of rain and snow shower activity as you get near the canadian border and up toward quebec. a lot of this is going to dry up as it drops southward, but we will see a period of clouds as we get toward midmorning, especially route 2 on north.

apart a little bit. they drop southward around lunchtime. this is the front coming through. so some passing clouds, but really it's all about that wind kicking up. you'll feel a big difference in temperature. high temperatures today probably 10:00 or 11:00. mid to upper 50's. then look what happens with that wind shift to the north and west. temperatures go the wrong way this afternoon. by 5:00 p.m., we're down in the 40's, and then the temperatures keep dropping here through the evening hours. with the stronger winds, wind chills going to be down in the 30's by temperatures 20's and 30's tonight. wind chills dropping throughout the course of the day, so it's a cold windy start to your weekend on your saturday, but high pressure's nosing in. that gives sunshine. decreasing winds on saturday. we'll keep that sunshine going on sunday as well. temperatures do moderate. back into the upper 50's on sunday. if you have plans on saturday outside in the morning hours, you need to be prepared for wind chills in the 20's, even into the afternoon. temperatures will hold in the 40's, but with enough wind, it's going to feel like the 30's.

tuesday into wednesday, that's our next storm potential. a storm system looks like it's going to try and come up the eastern seaboard with perhaps some significant rain, but there will be astronomically high tides due to a full super moon coming in sunday night into monday. there could be concerns along the coast with flooding with that storm gets going. we'll watch it. it looks like needed rain on the way toward the middle of next week. olessa: so far this morning, traffic is light. it's friday, veterans day, so we're hoping we're not going to see too much this is a check by the south bay mall, northbound heading toward the bottom of the screen. let's go to the maps and check the rest of your ride. so far not seeing too many problems. construction now gone here on 93 north by route 24. if you're traveling along 128, that road work also picked up over by kendrick street on the northbound side of 128 and up to route 9. the pike is quiet. if you're heading north of town, so far no issues to report. 93 looking good out of methuen. as you make your way down to the

on schedule, but keep in line the needham line, service suspension is in place along the entire line. it will stay suspended through sunday. there is no all mat busing. -- alternate busing. emily: take a look at this. a north carolina woman fights back against a would-be robber. that man seen in surveillance video hiding in the back of a restaurant armed with a gun in one hand, a knife in the other. that woman, a worker walks in, and when she's confronted, tries to grab the gun and he runs off. police are investigating similar robberies in that area. two american bald eagles stuck in a storm sewer. rescuers in orlando, florida, gently pulled them out. an expert from the audubon society says it looks like the symbols of our nation had been fighting each other, likely because it's nesting season for bald eagles, a time when they settle into a new home. >> they get into a territory

they hang on for dear life. emily: one of the birds managed to fly away after an hour. the second eagle, a female, was rescued about two hours after it was found stuck in that drain. randy: to your economy. voters in tip rhode island did approve a new cass it should open 2018. check of the markets, asian stocks slipping. investors concerned about higher interest rates under a donald trump presidency. u.s. stock futures are lower right now. the markets are open today, but most banks are closed for veterans day. a new revelation centered around yahoo's recently computer hack. new filings show the company had evidence that it had been hacked at least 18 months before it launched an investigation.

usually you brace yourself for the morning and by the afternoon it gets better. the wind chills this morning are running in the 40's, but by 5:00 this afternoon, notice the winds are going to be cranking, and it's going to feel like it's in the 30's. so a changeable day coming up. out the door this morning, a lot of 40's. 47 in boston. 44 worcester. we've got low 50's on cape cod. and the skies are mainly clear. but to the north, there are some clouds. a few showers. they're all associated with a front. this is the leading edge of colder air and stronger winds are going to be droppin temperatures come up into the mid 50's before lunchtime. you see those passing clouds coming through. once the front goes by, the winds shift to the north and west and send the temperatures falling down into the 40's through the afternoon hours, and look how the winds are going to be gusting. lunchtime right through the afternoon into the evening hours, near or over 30 miles per hour. in fact, there is a wind advisory on the cape for those winds that could gust to 40 miles per hour. so wind chills by the end of the day, they're going to be down in the 30's.

information. erika: first to portland, oregon. take a look at the video. several people arrested after breaking business windows, starting fires, trashing streets. there were a number of protests across the country for a second night. most of them were peaceful. also breaking overnight in marlas -- marlborough, a serious crash. also right now, police and d.c.f. are investigating after an infanas in a marlborough home. two adults were also found unconscious, sources telling 5 investigates a drug overdose might be to blame. randy: thank you. 5:33. right now, an mbta bus driver is facing charges, accused of leaving the scene of an accident. there were passengers onboard the bus. part of the incident seen on surveillance. emily: the eye's sera congi is live in stoneham with the action by passengers leading to an arrest. sera.

are still trying to figure out exactly how this happened, but passengers tell us that they took action because they knew something was wrong. it all came to an end here on main street in stoneham in front of the old dairy dome. surveillance cameras from a nearby business show the route 132 bus being pulled over by state police. the driver is accused of hitting a parked van in melrose, getting out to look at the damage, and then driving off. the passengers who called 9-1-1. >> and he got out for only a couple of minutes and then got back on the bus and kept driving. >> everyone was just pretty much like why is he driving? he should not be driving if he's hitting cars. sera: now investigators are looking into whether the driver was under the influence of prescription medication. but at this point the driver has been summonsed to court for leaving the scene of a crash that caused property damage. no one on the bus was hurt. live in stoneham this morning,

>> i was just kicking madly, and he said, he kept saying, "i'm going to stab you, i'm going to stab you." emily: only on 5 -- she was stabbed by a knife-wielding attacker. the victim is talking to newscenter 5 about how she fought back. ann mccoy says training in karate and self-defense saved her life. this happened in putnam, connecticut, where a man and woman stole a car and crashed it. ann and her daughter moments later, she was fighting off that man trying to make his way into her vehicle. >> he got me in the arm massively. he said, "i'll keep stabbing unless you got out." common sense came and i got out. emily: surveillance video shows that stolen vehicle being chased in worcester. christopher harding and his female accomplice are both in

street drug linked to dozens of deaths across the country. it's call u47700, or pink. that's the common street name for it. police describe it as a synthetic opioid similar to fentanyl. it has shown up at least once in drugs tested at a state lab in new hampshire and at least one granite state death has been tied to the substance. the emergency action to fight this drug. a new statewide grant program to fight opioid abuse. maura healey committing a half million dollars to this effort. that money comes from a first in the nation settlement with cvs pharmacy over policies tied to the dispensing of opioids. healey says the grant money will support school-based prevention initiatives. emily: rabies found in a bay

racism. they're unexpected new friends rolling in on two wheels. in the last week, 7-year-old eze obiora was the victim of racism. the manchester motorcycle club picked him up from school, gave him a jacket and took him out for a frozen yogurt. >> racism is something that's taught. we don't want him to learn that. emily: eze's mom show there's more love and support in their community. randy: the overnight construction turning a peaceful political protest into a riot. and the city of boston addressing race relations to broaden understanding. sweet homecoming for an air force master sergeant.

yes, sunday night into monday morning, skies look mainly clear. we're going to get a great view of this moon called the super monday. closest to earth in nearly 70 years. it brings up higher tides. this go-around, the tides even higher than last month with the chance of coastal flooding. look at temperatures out the door. not bad. mid to 50's. 47 in boston. you've got to look to the north, because this is where air is going to be coming from later in the day, and it is colder, and that cold air will be dropping southward as soon as this front crosses the area. along the front, there are clouds, a few showers, but a lot of these are going to dry out as the front drops on southward. we go through the morning hours. we'll see the clouds increase a little bit, especially north of the pike through midmorning. by lunchtime, there goes the front. passing clouds, maybe a stray sprinkle in the worcester hills.

otherwise, lots of sunshine. a huge drop in temperatures coming this afternoon. we're going to hit our highs late morning, 11:00 a.m. we're well up into the 50's. the sun's out, breezy, the front goes by. temperatures drop down into the 40's this afternoon. with those stronger winds, wind chill is going to be in the 30's by the end of the day. you can see the winds gusting at lunchtime up near 30 miles per hour. right through the evening hours winds gussing to higher than 30 miles per hour. closer to 40 on the cape where there is a wind so tomorrow is a bright day. it stays in the 40's. wind chills in the 30's all day long. then on sunday, sunshine continues, but notice the temperatures recover back into the upper 50's in the afternoon. if you're headed to gillette on sunday evening, looks great weatherwise. should still be pretty mild here as the winds die down, in the mid 40's. let's get you out to the roads. olessa, how are we doing? olessa: busy. one problem spot across the span of the zakim bridge. right lane is closed. disabled car. should be clearing shortly.
