route 128, there is construction by kendrick street and southbound approaching route 2. so far we're expecting trains and buses to start the morning on schedule. emily: thank you. breaking overnight, police are investigating after a cab driver crashes into a massachusetts state police cruiser in boston. this is new video just in from the scene at commonwealth ave. and berkeley street. it happened at 2:30 this morning. nobody was seriously hurt. rob gronkowski could be out after this blow which he says was the hardest hit he's taken on the field. this morning we're learning more about the possible injury. emily: and we're hearing from quarterback tom brady. doug meehan is live. doug: good morning. the first report that gronk may have suffered a punk churd lung, but it's more likely a bruised

ripped through a dorchester building in boston. flames broke out on the first floor of the welles avenue building just before 8:00 last night. boston fire department telling us no one was hurt. one person was sent to the hospital as a precaution. a cat did not make it out. no word on what caused the fire. emily: classes canceled at a lawrence elementary school for the rest of the week after a fire there. that fire started in a second floor classroom at the bruce elementary school yesterday. everyone made it out safely. smoke and water damage. investigators say there were no kids in that classroom at the time of the fire. and a faulty power strip may have started it. randy: another important day on tap for president-elect donald trump. he is set to meet with vice president-elect mike pence in new york. they're lining up candidates for top positions in the administration, the cabinet. the eyeopener's erika tarantal with the familiar names being tapped for one senior member.

form former executive is dangerous to core values. reporter: at least one case is being investigated in natick. a man targeted by threatening letters. one of those letters saying, quote, do not bring blank into our neighborhood. we will kill them. natick is white. maura healey announcing a hotline for victims to report harassment. >> in massachusetts, there are civil rht safety. and i'm going to enforce those laws. emily: police investigating that case in natick telling newscenter 5 this type of behavior will not be tolerated. randy: new this morning, boston's mayor is calling for changes weeks after a deadly trench collapse. two construction company employees were killed in that trejdy. the eye's sera congi is in the south end of the city with the action the mayor is proposing. sera: the two men were killed

month. now mayor walsh is proposing new rules to make sure that construction companies are in good standing before any work permit is issued. take a look at the chaotic scene last month. it was here on october 21 when kelvin mattocks and robert higgins were killed after the trench flooded. those men working for atlantic drain service. 5 investigates uncovered previous safety issues which included eight different violations earlier this y mayor walsh's proposal would allow city agencies to reject or modify permit applications based on the safety record. companies would also be required to tell the city of all osha violations whether they're pending or resolved. the proposal still needs approval by the boston city council. so far no criminal charges yet, but the suffolk county d.a. is investigating the incident. live in the south end, sera

emily: all right. bright and early. dark and early. randy: the old coastal flooding advisory. cindy: this is still related to the super moon which we've enjoyed with tides at the highest of the year. you add a storm, an onshore wind and find that midday high tide. a coastal advisory for we have rain coming in. and the steadiest, heaviest period of rain is really going to be around midday right through the afternoon hours, but this will have an impact on the evening commute as well. it looks like a good soaking rainfall around or just over an inch possible in some areas. this is going to be a widespread rainfall and, of course, we need it around here. there's that coastal flood advisory from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. for that midday high tide

revere, boston, quincy, scituate, hall. it's about 11:00 or so in the morning till about 11:15. a couple of hours either side that we'll be watching for some minor flooding on some of the vulnerable shore roads. if you live in the area, keep an eye on that. there's not a whole lot of wind. the winds are light and variable. the storm is to our south in the process of right now getting a little bit stronger. as the storm gets closer and it intensifies a little bit, it's going to help pick up storm itself does have some heavier rainfall with it just south of the new york city area. we've got just a few showers that have been lifting up through the south coast. one batch of rain on the outer cape. another filling in crossing connecticut. we will continue to see these periodic showers especially south of the pike over the next couple of hours. and look at the temperatures where we've got more clouds than rain along the coast and in southeastern massachusetts it's

chance to cool off. 28 in orange and just 37 in nashua. now, as we go through the day, those winds are going to pick up, turn to the northeast, so by noontime, sustained winds and along the coast they will gust over 20 miles an hour. low to mid 50's the best we do. in the interior, it may stay in the upper 40's. here's the timeline on the rain. a couple of showers around before 8:0 morning and lunchtime that we start to see the first bands of steadier rain shift on in here and notice what happened by midafternoon. the yellows, the oranges, these are pockets of heavier rain. can't even rule out a rumble of thunder today. and that is with us right through the evening commute. so any area that sees the rain come down hard, there could be flooding and ponding on the roads. it will be around midnight before the steadier rain lifts northwd and we're lift with drizzle and clouds overnight.

so far we're expecting trains and buses to start on schedule. randy: new this morning, the mbta's investigating the operator of its commuter rail. the company keolis after keolis failed to report a minor train crash. "the globe" is reporting that no passengers were on board at the time but the safety manager says the company should have it caused damage to parts of the railroad and the train's control car. emily: right now brockton's mayor being asked to explain why he went back to school on the taxpayers' dime. the city council voted to call mayor bill carpenter to answer questions about classes he took to learn cape verdean creole. the city paid $585 for it. >> it's the ethical implications

taxpayers should pay for it. emily: the council also wants to hear from the city's fire chief about a $9,000 piece of granite because with his budget that's missing. both the mayor and chief will appear before the finance committee next monday. randy: boston-based new balance is putting distance between itself and a white supremacist website. official shoes of white people. some people burned their running shoes in protest of a remark. new balance says it does not tolerate bigotry or hate in the workplace. emil your economy, asian shares mostly lower as expectations grow of a u.s. rate hike. investors looking for the monthly retail sales report due out a little bit later today. delta airlines is rolling out

today. this app allows travelers to track their checked bags with their smartphone using a chip that's embedded in luggage tags. scanners on the sides of each baggage belt read the chip and indicate whether luggage is loaded on the correct plane. delta hopes that new system will ease at least one stress of flying. randy: over 1,000 u.p.s. air mechanics voted to go on strike but it's not final. 1200 employees are protesting against three years without a pay raise a health care benefits. the workers are restricted by the railway labor act, meaning they have to get the approval of a federal mediator before striking. u.p.s. is confident they'll reach a deal before that happens. trending stories this morning, small victory for protestors of the dakota access pipeline. federal authorities are putting the project on hold saying they want additional discussions with the standing rock sioux indian tribe.

police cruiser. it happened on commonwealth avenue and berklee street in back bay around 2:30 this morning. nobody seriously hurt. we're bringing you more details. emily: four workers are hurt after a roof collapses in kingston. they were working on a house on christmas tree lane when the roof gave way. two victims have severe injuries. one of them was flown to a boston hospital. the other two workers are recovering. randy: at least 41 large fi southeast part of the country right now. they stretch across the appalachian mountains from alabama to virginia. in north carolina, one of the biggest fires has grown at least 20% since sunday. the smoke is creating serious health concerns in some areas, including the city of atlanta, where some people are wearing masks to help breathe. emily: the wrestling team at columbia university is suspended this season as leaders at the college investigate a series of text messages they say are

homophobic. the messages described as appalling were reportedly sent by team members over the last three years in a group messaging app. columbia says the students will not compete until the investigation is complete. but the members are still allowed to practice. randy: a georgia man is convicted of murder in the 2014 death of his son. a jury found that justin ross harris intentionally left his nearly 2-year-old son in a hot vehicle for nearly seven hours. his defense accident. prosecutors say he was leading a double life and wanted a way out of his marriage. he will be sentenced next month. emily: u.s. forces may have committed war crimes in afghanistan according to the international criminal court. the chief prosecutor says american armed forces and the cia may have tortured and raped dozens of detainees between 2003 and 2014, most in the first year. americans could be indicted although washington has not

more. on average, plan on about an inch of rainfall out of this system. you can see some showers have been trying to lift up from the south already, but the main event here was this area of low pressure developing. still in the waters to our south. there's actually a little bit of a tropical connection with this. that is going to help to add a little bit more moisture to this system. as this low approaches, it's going to strengthen a little bit. there's not much wind at all this morning. as we get toward this afternoon, notice how long the coastline. this is 3:00 p.m. wind gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. coastline will ramp down pretty quickly tonight as the storm pulls away. but the timing will allow so some -- a little bit of an onshore flow to develop and interact with this high tide. so there is a coastal flood advisory along the coastline for the midday high tide. so from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., if you live along the coast, may have flooding midday today. once we get this storm out of our hair, sun returns. a mild start to the weekend.
