emily: good morning. it is friday, november 18. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. at 4:30, shots fired at police in norwood. emily: a serial bank robber dubbed the spelling bee bandit. his distinctive notes and the concerne violent. randy: another surprise as president-elect donald trump fills his cabinet. the bay state politician that's part of all the buzz this morning. emily: we'll get to that. first, we'll check in with cindy for this friday. tgif. we made it. cindy: it's going to be fantastic. a nice day shaping up. clear skies in boston. it is 43 degrees. colder in the suburbs north and west of towns. worcester at 39.

it's about 50 on the cape where we have a blanket of clouds but also some stronger winds. there's a storm out in the ocean that's going to stay there, and as high pressure noses in from the west, most of us will have light winds and sunshine. on the cape, the winds are gusting over 30 miles an hour and throughout the day, we're going to hang on to wind on the cape. elsewhere, wind should be under 10 or 15 miles an hour. but it is a breezy day on the cape. clouds should dissipate later this morning with sunshine for everyone as we go through the afternoon. by lunchtime the mid 50's, topping out at 60. big changes for your weekend. more on that coming up. let's get you out to the roads. olessa: good morning, everyone. a live look to start things off. a check of the pike by alston-brighton, eastbound to the top of the screen. let's go to the maps and check the rest of your ride. no complaints traveling into town. construction clearing in a little bit as you head south of town by 93 northbound by route 24. road work around 128.

minutes. we're expecting trains and buses a start on schedule. randy: thank you. breaking overnight, a tense situation as police swarm a neighborhood. emily: a mother and child were caught in the middle and the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is in norton right now with what we've learned. antoinette? antoinette: emily and randy, police made that arrest overnight, the man who barricaded himself in a home. he said he of rounds of ammunition, even firing at police officers. here's a look at that scene from overnight. the tense situation starting around 9:30 last night. police called to this home on john scott boulevard because of an argument between a man and a woman. that woman managed to escape with a young child. but the man identified as 42-year-old heath mullet barricaded himself inside. the swat team and other local police agencies were called in. at one point, several rounds

vehicle. mullet eventually surrendered and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. he now faces several charges including assault with intent to murder. there were no other injuries. we're live in norton this morning. antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: antoinette, thank you. other stories we're following right now, firefighters are trying to figure out what caused a house fire on tewksbury on chandler street. you can see the flames. we're told by the fire department the house was abandoned and the fire does not seem suspicious according to firefighters. two of them were treated for minor injuries. randy: a teenager expected in court accused of attacking a 14-year-old girl at a school bus stop in bourne. 18-year-old john allen was arrested yesterday. he grabbed the girl by the neck, nearly strangled her before driving away.

emily: police and federal agents are looking for the suspect in a rash of bank robberies. he's been dubbed the spelling bee bandit. and that's because the word robbery is misspelled on all of the notes that he passes on tellers demanding cash. he's the suspect in at least four bank robberies in the area since halloween, the most recent happening at a td bank in peabody. the f.b.i. says he has never shown a weapon, but investigators say he has seemed more agitated with every heist. >> this person teller counter and the tone of his voice and his verbal interaction with the tellers has become more aggressive. emily: there is a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. randy: boston police investigating a deadly shooting inside a home in dorchester. police were called to this home on west cottage street yesterday afternoon.

there was a confrontation leaving one dead. the city's police commissioner says there are just too many guns on the streets. >> two families obviously that will be impacted forever here. again, mayor walsh, myself, always talking about the violence and how many guns are out there. this is why woe have to continue to get the guns off the street. randy: the other person involved is being questioned by police. no names released. emily: donald trump is getting ready for more meetings as he tries to fill his presidential erika tracking overnight developments, including a very familiar name around here, which is apparently in play, erika. erika: as you know, that name getting a lot of attention this morning. but first an actual pick. the president-elect has offered retired general michael flynn the job of national security advisor. flynn has been highly critical of the current administration. he's emphasized the need for more aggressive u.s. military action to fight isis. the big talk about former

romney. he'll meet with trump tomorrow. despite his blistering comments, he may be a candidate for secretary of state. meantime, the president-elect is taking credit for not moving ford to mexico. ford, which never planned to close the plant, is still planning to move some production of the focus from michigan to mexico. randy? randy: right now, three girls are facing charges after an alarming attack on the t, and the eyeopener's sera congi is in boston now with how witnesses tried to stop this assault. sera: well, randy, it all came to an end here at andrew station when a witness hit the emergency

49-year-old woman, got on a red line train at savin hill, and it was girls mocking her accent, telling her go back to your own country. the when the victim tried to move away, the girls punched her and struck her in the face with a cell phone. the witness says the girls were celebrating when they got off the train. a witness got a photo of them. arrested, due back in court later this month. as we reported, the state is so concerned about hate crimes right now, the attorney general's office has set up a special hotline. live in south boston, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: new numbers as the state tries to curb suspension rates for students at risk. the numbers are increasing. the department of elementary and secondary education found english language learners were

emily: a former massachusetts house speaker sal dimasi could be home from prison after a rare early release. sal dimasi was sentenced in 2011 to eight years in federal prison for extortion and fraud. he's been suffering from neck, tongue and prostate cancer. radiation damag so he's only able to swallow liquids and pureed food. his wife says he's lost 70 pounds. >> with his swallowing being the way it is, he really is just wasting away to nothing. emily: the judge has granted a compassionate release. only 11 federal prisoners have received it since 2013. randy: emotional moments on the field after a hard hit for the

wednesday and that on thursday. we have blizzard warnings up. where you see that orange in western parts of minnesota, so just west of the city of minneapolis into northeastern south dakota. but that whole system is working in our direction. emily: okay. cindy: it's going to go to our west. we'll get mainly rain. it will bring a big pattern change. much colder air on the way. you can see snow coming through the dakotas working on through minnesota. 70 in kansas city. it is 22 degrees in denver. so that is the contrast that is you can see right where we have those temperatures contrasts, that's where we have our storms. we have temperatures in the low 40's, boston. 50's on the cape. there are 30's showing up, especially over areas north and west of town. we're as cold as 31 in norwood. a chilly start this morning, but skies are mainly clear. there's one exception right here. basically from plymouth down to the cape, we've got some clouds. these are coming in off a big ocean storm.

the ocean and high pressure will nose in. that will dominate our weather until this storm catches up with us saturday night into sunday. a lot of sunshine today. however, notice the winds pretty light around the boston area, at or below 10 miles an hour. different story on the cape today. these are the gusts up around 30 miles per hour and stay in the afternoon. atmosphere windy day on the cape. there will be clouds that dissipate with time this morning. temperatures no low to mid 50's from the cape to marshfield. boston close to 60. we should get there taunton, lawrence. really a fantastic day today. clouds dissipating over the cape. clear skies tonight. we'll drop down into the upper 30's in our coldest suburbs. low 40's in town. in the cape, we'll stay mostly in the mid 40's. saturday, increasing clouds but still in the 50's. that will change as this storm

night into sunday is mainly going to go to our north. it will wrap in colder air on the back side, so through parts of northern western new england, there could be snow, a few inches from the berkshires into vermont. around here, nothing more than a few flakes possible, some flurries through the worcester hills. saturday the pick day of the weekend. on sunday, take a look, a few clouds saturday evening on the cape. and then the clouds fill in overnight. by 6:00 on sunday showers pulls in. i think the wettest part of your sunday is probably just before lunchtime. a lot of those showers dissipate, but look at the snow out across eastern new york state into western massachusetts. that continues, and that's why there could be a couple of inches out that way. a few flurries out through the worcester hills. blustery, colder. no higher than 40 on monday and stuck in the 40's through thanksgiving.

olessa: as long as we can get there. so far this morning, the ride is quiet. the zakim bridge, leverett connector, no problems both directions nice and light. let's go to the maps and check the rest of your ride. pretty much the story heading into town. no problems. we're watching what's left of the overnight construction. should be clearing. expressway is quiet. so is 128. there's road work clearing south of highland ave. traveling the pike, no issues. north of town, looking good 93 problem-free start down to the leverett connector. so far trains and buses expecting to start the morning on schedule. a heads-up, if you're traveling the mass pike, the toll booth demolition project could add time to your commute. phase two involves road reconstruction and drainage work. a spokesperson for massdot says most construction will end wednesday and resume monday. emily: we're now hearing the calls for help after this violent crash in revere.

commuter rail train. neighbors calling police after that impact. >> 9-1-1, what is the address of your emergency? >> a car was just hit by the train. >> a car was just hit by a train? >> yes, that's correct. emily: you can see the driver go around the safety gates on oak island road at glendale right into the path of that commuter train. amazingly, both the drir from that crash. police say the driver, who is from lynn, turned himself in yesterday. randy: breaking overnight, volkswagen is cutting thousands of job as they cut costs while recovering from their emissions scandal. 30,000 employees will lose their jobs with more than half of those losses coming in germany. the automaker says the cuts will save billions a year. check of the markets on this friday, asian shares were mixed overnight. mostly mixed.

investors are waiting for the sales reports due out next week. and massachusetts lost more than 5,000 jobs last month according to the latest report from the commonwealth. fewer people look for work during october. but economy experts say the latest largest and the losses were in education and health services and leisure and hospitality. those sectors have uneven results month to month. the unemployment rate 3.3% in october. emily: workers at a major u.s. airport have voted to strike just ahead of thanksgiving travel. about 500 workers at chicago's o'hare international airport are asking for a $15 hourly wage. the workers include baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, januaitors and wheelchair attendants. a union president says a walkout could disrupt travel.

emily: it is 4:55. breaking news. randy: a suspect is under arrest. heath mullet opened fire last night. they were called there at around 9:30 for a domestic argument. a woman and child ran from the home where mullet barricaded himself with a n. vehicle. no officers before he surrendered. police did not fire back. he's facing several charges including assault with intent to murder. emily: a maine woman sentenced to three years in prison. carolyn lee is accused of leaving the scene of the crash that killed 24-year-old emily zarnoch. lee's vehicle went off the road and hit her. randy: a vermont man is going to

related to a deadly crash. prosecutors say 20-year-old joseph castano was visiting his friend at endicott college in april when he crashed into a pole. 19-year-old craig simpson was killed. he there serve three years probation and lose his license for 15 years. emily: a gorilla standards when a 3-year-old boy slipped into it. the gorilla harambe was killed. it could lead to fines or other disciplinary against the zoo. randy: an arizona police officer is on administrative leaving for punching a woman in the face. the officer claims she was resisting arrest and had kicked and kneed him. the woman and a man were being evicted from an apartment when the officer responded.

a wild scene outside a tampa, florida, bar. a brawl on a sidewalk early tuesday morning came to a crashing end when a car slams into the building. you see it here. the driver took off and is still on the run. one man was taken to the hospital but refused treatment. no one was inside the bar at the time. emily: the bruins give it up in the final minutes against the minnesota wild. it appeared they scored a clean goal in the second period last night, but after a challenge, it was ruled under 45 seconds to play, the wild knock one in on tuukka rask. the bruins lose 1-0. red sox' mookie betts taking second place as the american league m.v.p., receiving nine first-place votes as compared to the m.v.p. winner, mike trout, who one 19 first-place votes. trout has been regarded as the

randy: scary moments during a cross-country race when a runner is taken out by a deer. he ran smack into the man. he went down hard but got up, finished the race. the runner was bruised but is otherwise fine. emily: ah, incredible! randy: how many mornings does it nearly happen to people with a car? cindy: that's a little different than just standing out there. i can guarantee that is parade of plymouth. randy: good, good. cindy: we're all going to be there. the weather looks good. sunshine in the morning, increasing clouds. we'll call it partly sunny. temperatures low to mid 50's. wind off the water out of the northeast, helping to bring in some of those clouds. but it will be dry on saturday. can't say the same thing for sunday. around here we're watching this storm, which is right now bringing snow to parts of the dakotas and minnesota. this is going to move into new

england that get some snow. there are blizzard warnings up here. western minnesota, northeastern south dakota, this storm is really the first big winter storm of the season. it's going to track through the great lakes here on saturday as well. our skies are clear, the exception being the cape. this storm will stay in the open waters. it will kick up the winds on cape cod. we're seeing that this boston. look at buffalo. 70 degrees. unusually warm here in the northeast. mid 60's from new york. upper 60's down to d.c. it's a nice day in the northeast, but we're watching that system out through the northern plain states. it is going to shift westward. you can see that on futurecast as it works on through. snow for the lakes, parts of northern west new england. a period of rain as we get toward saturday night and especially early on sunday and then look at the pattern change.
