after a chaotic and frightening morning. [sirens] sera: library and student union building -- >> i was yelled at and told not to go inside. i was, like, what's going on? sera: a call into bu police from a man claiming to have guns and explosives. >> the call came from a male individual stating that he was barricaded inside room 420 on the fourth floor. he mentioned the room booby trapped. , another call that he had just shot a hostage inside that room. sera: immediately students in that building were evacuated, and the section of comm ave crowded with students, was shut down. >> i heard a ton of sirens barricade of a ton of people. sera: shortly after swat teams cleared the fourth floor and , went through the building, finding now evidence of any -- no evidence of any active

the bu police chief says the phone call lasted 10 minutes and the phone number was blocked. the caller did have an accent they could not identify. they are trying to trace that phone call. the color did not claim to have any motive. live at the bu campus, sera congi -- the caller did not claim to have any motive. live in the bu campus, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5 for the first time, an 18-year-old is preparing to face a judge charged with attacking a 14-year-old girl. john allen is charged with assault. he is the captain of the football team at the vocational school. emily: this man is under arrest after he barricaded himself inside a norton home overnight and fired at officers. police say 42-year-old heath mullet was inside a home on john

hundreds of rounds of ammunition. mullet fired multiple rounds from within the home, and even hit a police vehicle. a woman and young child escaped the home. no officers were injured. mullet is facing charges including assault with intent to murder. turning to the weather -- sunny, warm day out there. cindy: we are so close to 60 degrees out there right now and i think we have one more temperatures are relatively mild. i want you to focus on the middle of the country and look at the temperature in kansas city. it is only 43. at 5:00 this morning, it was 70. huge changes. denver was 80. now it's 24. they are dealing with the storm, the first winter storm of the season. there are blizzard warnings in

backlash about who he is choosing -- his team announcing this morning the first member of trump's cabinet jeff sessions. the alabama senator has been offered the position of attorney general. a loyal supporter sessions was the first gop senator to endorce -- to endorse trump during the primary. senator sessions: i'd be honored to be considered. maggie: trump releasing a statement saying he's been , unbelievably impressed with him and his phenomenal record but sessions could face a challenging confirmation in the senate. in 1986 he was blocked from becoming a dic about diversity and how the appeals are made and what happened in the campaign and again senator sessions could have a real problem getting approval by the senate. another appointee facing resistance -- lieutenant general michael flynn just named national security advisor. >> it's going really well and it's a great transition. maggie: at the republican national convention flynn

up" chant against hillary clinton and in his book, field of fight, flynn wrote i don't believe all cultures are morally equivalent. a top democrat on the house intelligence committee says he's deeply concerned with flynn's inflammatory remarks. and the transition team has filled one more spot pegging representative mike pompeo of kansas, currently a member of the house intelligence committee as director of the cia. maggie rulli close trump also plans to meet with former rival mitt romney over the weekend. the two have exchanged some heated words in the past, and this meeting is supposed to be all about mending fences. maggie rulli, abc news, washington. and baystate senator elizabeth warren tweeting about that meeting this morning, saying governor mitt romney, when you're meeting with donald trump, maybe you could bring your binders full of women with you? warren referencing the phrase g, romney used when answering a question during a presidential debate in 2012. emily: massachusetts and new hampshire are joining dozens of other states in a drug manufacturer lawsuit. the states claim the maker of suboxone, a drug used to treat opiate addiction, conspired with another drug manufacturer to delay the availability of a generic alternative. according to the lawsuit, the

drug since 2009. annual sales of suboxone topped $1 billion. erika: new numbers as the state tries to curb suspension rates for students considered at-risk. the report shows the numbers are actually increasing. the department of elementary and secondary education found that english language learners were suspended at a rate of 5.4% in 2015. that's up from 5% the year before. the rate climbed for low income students to 7.7%, from 7.2. the report also finds that black and hispanic students are suspended at a greater rate than white students. state regulations were put into -- tried to put -- stay regular regulations into place in july 2014 to slow these rates, because suspended students are more likely to drop out. emily: some new hampshire school districts will head to federal court in an attempt to stop a possible bus strike. the timberlane and hampstead districts want to force the company first student to provide an early warning if the union plans to strike.

funding. first student provides service to salem and derry, along with the timberlane and hampstead districts, affecting over 4,000 students. erika: right now, an intense search for this man, the suspect in a rash of bank robberies. he's been dubbed the spelling bee bandit. that's because the word robbery is misspelled on all of the notes he passes to tellers demanding cash. he's the suspect in at least four bank robberies in the area since halloween. the st the fbi says he has never shown a weapon but investigators say he has seemed more and more agitated with every heist he pulls off. >> this person has been leaning in over the teller counter to interact with the tellers, and the tone of his voice and the berliner interaction with the

arrest. emily: your economy now -- massachusetts lost more than 5,000 jobs last month. this as fewer people looked for work during october. economic experts say the largest losses were in education and health services and leisure and hospitality. backing up this theory is the unemployment rate, which actually plunged to 3.3% in october. emily: volkswagen cutting thousands of jobs here and abroad. captures an arizona police officer punching a woman in the face. why the officer is defending his aggressive assault. cindy: and we have got one more milder day before much colder air arrives. the timeline and when parts of our area could see snow later this weekend. erika: winter weather is coming to boston. how the mbta is getting ready for the snow that will eventually be headed our way.

>> you're watching newscenter 5 at noon. emily: volkswagen announcing today it's cutting thousands of jobs as it works to cut costs while recovering from its emission scandal. 30,000 workers will lose their jobs with more than half of those losses in germany. the automaker says the cuts will save billions a year, while it pays off a 15 billion dollar settlement with u.s. authorities and car owners. workers at a major u.s. airport have voted to strike just ahead of thanksgiving travel. right now, 2000 at chicago's o'hare international airport are better working conditions. the workers include baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, janitors, and wheelchair attendants. the strike is expected to begin sometime in the coming days and a union president says a walk out could disrupt travel. erika: right now, caught on camera. an arizona police officer under investigation for punching a woman in the face. this happened in flagstaff. it was caught on camera. you can see it. the officer claims the woman was resisting arrest, but the force of the punch is raising some

emotional scene where a couple was being evicted from an apartment. he says the woman kicked him, and kneed him in the groin. the officer under investigation has no history of excessive force. federal investigators say the barrier for the gorilla exhibit at the cincinnati zoo failed to meet safety standards. the agriculture department report suggests that the zoo's dangerous-animal response team acted properly when a three-year-old boy fell into the enclosure last may. the incident prompted the team to shoot and kill a western lowland gorilla named harambe. fines or other disciplinary action against the zoo. emily: a wild scene caught on camera outside a tampa, florida bar. a brawl on the sidewalk early tuesday morning comes to a crashing end when a car slams into the bar. the driver took off, and is still on the loose. one man was taken to a hospital where he refused treatment. no one was inside the bar at the time of the crash. erika: trains stalled.

many still ask olessa what the t is doing to make things better. emily: it's a big question as the weather gets colder. so newscenter 5's olessa stepanova went right to the top for answers. reporter: who can forget the snow fall that crippled our public transportation system in the winter of 2014? mbta general manager brian shortsleeve remembers all too well. >> i ride the commuter rail almost everyday. i know we gotta do better for our riders. reporter: another nightmare, the t put a winter resiliency plan into action last year. >> we've invested over $90 million into infrastructure. so the system from a resiliency standpoint is in much better shape. reporter: phase 1 focused on large parts of the orange line and the red line. now they're in phase 2. >> we're replacing all of the third rail, we're replacing all the third rail heaters, we've got snow equipment in place. and we're confident that the subway will be running as the weather gets worse. reporter: another new weapon, snowzilla. a massive jet-powered snowblower which has been revamped and

>> we over 240 pieces of equipment. it is going to make a big difference once the snow starts falling. reporter: the t will also invest 500 million dollars over the next few years for new orange line cars, new red line cars and new power and signal systems. >> there are people in this 5000 organization everyday getting ready for winter. reporter: the t is also planning to improve communication with social media playing a huge role. erika: improve communication with passengers when there are alerts and service changes including on social media. emily: new avenue, sky 5 was over the boston common this morning, where it's beginning to look a lot like christmas. the 47-foot tree gifted by nova scotia was escorted by boston police. the tree is a part of a 45-year tradition. the tree lighting and all of the

it's that time of year. cindy: it is that time of year. erika: it does not feel like that now -- cindy: in minneapolis it was very warm earlier and now just west of there there is a blizzard warning in effect. this is a storm moving across the country and it will pay us a visit by sunday. late in the weekend, take a look. parts of worcester county could see a coating of snow. the b vermont, the mountains, on up into new york state, several inches of snow possible. this storm is going to be a game changer. we have seen that over a good portion of the country. you can see it right here south of the minneapolis area. it's lifting to the west. we will be on the warmer side and it will wrap in some colder air. northern minnesota, back to eastern north dakota and ahead

into the 70's. 70 in detroit. 73 in cincinnati. we are not quite that warm, but hey, 63 to reason boston is not bad for the middle of november. we have sunshine out today. it has been a bright, beautiful day. temperatures have recovered. we have a light north-northwesterly wind here in town, but only cape, cloudier and quite windy. out of the north, gusting over 30 miles per hour. impressive this storm is on satellite. there is a wide swath of cloud cover. and on the edge of the storm shield, the clouds have been flirting with the cape all morning, starting to shrink up now. the outer cape in nantucket are under the clouds at this point. it kept your temperatures down. you see most areas in the upper 50's to near 60.

50's. this clouds are going to push by you. notice -- they will not have much chance to bump up much more. a lot of us will touch that 60 degree mark today. the winds will stay active on the cape right through the overnight hours. so, that wind overnight is going to keep your temperatures up. we'll see in the mid 40's overnight on the cape, but elsewhere, a lot a cold start tomorrow, but once again we have a nice recovery and to the 50's in the afternoon. early sunshine will give way to increasing clouds, however, as some of those clouds to push onshore particularly along the coastline and massachusetts. here comes that other storm though from the west. saturday night and sunday morning we will get in on some rain and as colder air wraps on then, we will see temperatures drop. as the strengthens on top of
