ready just yet but a chance skirting in. we're mainly watching that sunday night into monday timeframe. this is something that as it moves through, more accumulation in the west, through the worcester hills and out into the brk -- berkshires. this is a winter blast. we have winter storm warnings in the west that will be pushing toward our area. we're getting in on t approaching for later tonight and into your sunday morning. until then, things are looking relatively quiet. dry and clear on the radar right now. we will be seeing some clouds moving in for later this afternoon. that's something moving on to the coast and eventually pushing westward. we have temperatures mainly in the 40's, but we will start to inch upward this afternoon, doug. doug: thank you. breaking overnight, boston police are investigating a serious crash involving a pedestrian. it happened on quincy street in

night. one person suffering serious injuries. we're told the driver did stay on the scene. rhondella: and breaking overnight in beverly, a scare for people living in apartments on kelleher road. firefighters put out a fire in a maintenance garage. no one was hurt. the fire is under investigation. doug: first on 5, former massachusetts senator scott brown is looking at a possible opportunity to join team trump. brown telling newscenter 5 he got a phone call from the president-elect yesterday afternoon. rhondella: brown is a candidate for secretary of affairs. newscenter 5's ben simmoneau spoke with the former senator at his home in new hampshire. >> my phone rang, and i have donald trump's number. it locked in. it was obviously the president-elect. ben: scott brown's cellphone rang. it was donald trump, the man he endorsed all the way back before the new hampshire primary, asking brown for more help by possibly taking a cabinet post. >> he said what's your real passion? i said, my real passion is

committing suicide. ben: brown, a 35-year veteran, views viewing the department of veteran affairs as the toughest cabinet position. >> you read every day about somebody dying or negligence or a cover-up in the v.a. it makes you so angry. ben: brown says v.a. doctors and nurses need to get out to smaller towns where veterans live and work more seamlessly with the defense department. as for what he'd >> 365, 24/7 suicide hotline by a live person. it's time to give back in a real meaningful way that can really change people's lives. ben: brown had been supporting president-elect trump for 10 months, even as he took heat from republicans like former massachusetts governor mitt romney. so we asked him what he thinks of a secretary of state romney, should it happen? >> they're both smart, dynamic guys. they can do a lot to offer. they can give a lot to this

offered. scott brown says they'll have another conversation next week. in rye, new hampshire, ben simmoneau, wcvb newscenter 5. rhondella: mitt romney is expected to meet with president-elect donald trump today. that meeting will be held in bedminster, new jersey, where trump owns a golf course. as ben mentioned, the former massachusetts governor is reportedly considered for secretary of state. a trump spokesman says the president-elect is holding meetings with supporters calling the gathering an opportunity for trump to hear from the best and brightest people. doug: this 9-year-old is banged up after getting hit by a car just after he stepped off the school bus. his grandmother witnessing the whole thing. the eye's john atwater spoke with the child's family about that scary scene. >> he's pretty banged up and sore. john: evidence of the violent collision is all over his body.

his grandmother watched in horror as a car slammed into the fourth-grader right after he got off the bus. his mother says his backpack protected him. >> he landed on his bag, on his side. his bag kind of like, that's what basically, like, saved his back from being hurt. john: family says he was passing metropolitan avenue as a car was coming over the hill. >> he just kept saying that he had a big gash over his eye and a bump on his head. >> people come flying down this street all the time. it's -- it's dangerous. john: neighbors have long worried about this hill and now the boy's parents think the crash should prompt a review of the bus stop. >> hopefully, something gets done about the bus stop situation. john: right now police and the school district are investigating to see if the crash could have been prevented. in the meantime, the boy's

drivers to be especially cautious around school buses. >> you have two minutes of your time to let children -- these are children -- off of a bus. like it's so important you need to stop. john: police are still investigating the circumstances of this crash, but they do say the driver stopped after the collision. at children's hospital, john atwater, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: all right, john. thank you. chelsea police need your help to track down the driver of this white minivan on drove over an elderlma the 72-year-old victim received cuts on her head. she was taken to mass general hospital and is expected to believe. it may be a dodge caravan with a missing right side hub cab. rhondella: boston police looking for the person who phoned in a hoax. someone called the b.u. campus and claimed he was trapped inside the mugar library. the person called back to say he had shot a hostage.

lockdown, sending students into a panic. >> right as i got to the door, i was yelled at and told not to go inside. i was like what's going on? >> this coming from the b.u. police station, it was an actual person answering questions. rhondella: eventually, the threat was determined to be a hoax. police are trying to trace the call. boston police make an arrest in a roxbury murder. 24-year-old anthony toombs was shot to death on nazing street earlier this mont helped investigators identify the shooter. antoine davis was arrested yesterday. he pled not guilty in court. doug: a winchester man will serve life without parole for the murder of his mother. 48-year-old matthew mcaveeney pleaded guilty to the charges. prosecutors say he killed his mother and her cat in their

police say she had been dead two weeks. he was arrested in north carolina a week later. rhondella: the family who sued a prestigious boarding school is celebrating. phillips exeter expelled their 15-year-old son, named john doe in a lawsuit, after a sexual encounter with a female student. the family accused the school of gender discrimination, claiming two minors had sex but only one was expelled. the jury found the school liable on three claims. the judge will decide if john student. doug: good news for drivers worried the mass pike roadwork might be adding to the congestion on thanksgiving eve. well, an about-face. after saying construction crews would remain on the turnpike until noon next wednesday, the baker administration says the crews are going to stop by 5:00 a.m. on wednesday morning. nearly a million people in massachusetts are expected to hit the road to travel over thanksgiving. one massachusetts-based sneaker

winter storm warnings are in effect for much of the great lakes and now even starting to extend into areas of vermont heading out to the green mountains. so it's not too far from home. doug: they can keep it in the mountains. kelly ann: keep it in the mountains. that really will be the case for much of the snowfall moving in this weekend. the mountains could see a low accumulation, but here in the lower elevations, many of us will be missing out on that accumulating snowfall chance. we're talking about the rain impacts as we move into the weekend ahead, and the next chance of rain is moving in for tonight. itl scattered showers expected at most, especially for late this evening for that travel. tomorrow morning, that's when we see the best risk of showers tracking through the area. that will be moving through rather quickly, though. so as we head into the late morning to afternoon, those shower chances start to decrease. then we're talking about the chance of a few flurries heading into sunday night and into early monday morning. temperatures right now are mainly in the 40's. as you can see, especially heading out to the coast and the cape, 45 degrees in boston.

at this point. so definitely feeling nice and mild for heading out early this morning. a bit colder as we move inland where we see temperatures down into the 20's even. springfield at 27 degrees. so big range going from inland to the coast. that is going to be the case this afternoon as well as we see some clouds moving in for coastal locations. that will keep a lot of us in the lower to mid 50's. boston expecting a high of 51 degrees this afternoon. marshfield at 52. 50's to near 60 as we move out toward pittsfield. inland locations where the clouds will be slower to move in, that sun will help to keep us just a bit warmer for this afternoon. here's what's in store for today. we have beautiful sunny skies to start for early this afternoon. but notice by the midmorning we see coastal clouds making their way westward onto some of our far coastal locations. downtown boston, don't be surprised if you see clouds

after such nice mild weather. doug: yesterday it was unbelievable. kelly ann: absolutely. it was a little tease. we're seeing a huge flip. we'll feel more winterlike. some winter storm watches already. right now for much of massachusetts, we're in the clear. moving into southern vermont, we have a winter storm watch that has been issued mainly for the southern green mountains. it's really through that mountain range we see the likeli snowfall with that chance of rain moving in for tomorrow, sunday night, and also into monday. so here's what's going on overhead right now. we're dry here locally, but there's a rain just to our west. this is moving through with a cold front that looks to have some big impacts on our temperatures as we head into tomorrow and really through much of the workweek ahead. a winter blast to follow this. this is already bringing snowfall through the great lakes where winter storm warnings and

right now, dry and clear overhead, but, doug and rhondella, we have clouds later this afternoon. a look at how that will impact our temperatures. rhondella: thank you, kelly ann. we are following breaking news on the eye this morning. doug: a car crashes into a person on quincy street in dorchester. that patient being treated for serious injuries. this happening about 11:00 last night. we're told the driver did stay on the scene. the crash is under investigation this morning. rhondella: breaking overnight in beverly, a fire at an apartment buildi it started around 1:00 this morning. no one was hurt. doug: right now, a 9-year-old from roslindale is recovering after getting struck by a car. he was getting off the school bus when he was hit, and it happened right in front of his grandmother. police and the school are trying to figure out if that crash could have been prevented. rhondella: former massachusetts senator scott brown is up for a position in the trump administration. it's a story you saw first on 5, brown telling newscenter 5 he received a call from the president-elect.

doug: the president-elect has already named three key members of his national security team. and as nichole berlie explains, two of them are already coming under fire. nichole: team trump announcing jeff sessions for attorney general, lieutenant general michael flynn for national security advisor and michael pompeo of kansas as cia director. federal judgeship in 1986 after allegations he made racial remarks, including testimony from a black u.s. attorney who says sessions called him, quote, boy. sessions denied those allegations. >> i am not a racist. i am not insensitive to blacks. >> the selection is being criticized. >> i strongly urge donald trump

senator sessions. but if donald trump fails to do that, then there will be a moral question in the united states senate. nichole: michael flynn is questioned by some for his relationship with russia and his book in which he wrote i don't believe all cultures are morally equivalent. but no signs of worry from team trump. >> we've got a great number of men and women, great qualificatns serve this new administration. nichole: there are also critiques of the lack of diversity with all confirmed announcements going to white men. nichole berlie, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: the president-elect now paying $25 million to settle three fraud lawsuits against his defunct trump university. the class-action lawsuit charged that trump u failed to deliver on its promise to educate people about the real estate market.

they say she was walking to her bus stop on november 10 when she was attacked. prosecutors say another teen saw what happened and screamed, causing the suspect to take off. >> the vehicle in question, according to the police report, is a very distinguishable type vehicle. diane: prosecutors say several witnesses saw the car several days prior to the attack and on the day it happened, but allen's attorney argues there are several inconsistencies not only regarding the description of the attacker but also the vehicle. >> the only assailant is this young girl who was in close proximity to the victim. she was shown a photo array. the defendant's photo was in that photo array. she failed to identify anybody within that photo array. diane: the superintendent of the school tells us allen is a good student. the suspect is held behind bars until another court hearing take place on tuesday. in bourne, diane cho, wcvb

suffered an apparent drug overdose in a lawrence dollar store. heartbreaking video showing the woman's young daughter trying to wake her mother. mandy mcgowen is facing child endangerment charges. rhondella: police in maine investigating a deadly crash. a man and his 5-year-old were killed after their car was hit by a box truck on the maine turnpike. it happened yesterday backing up traffic for eight miles. a 56-year-old driver from lowell was behind the wheel of the truck when it struck the car and landed on top of it. the driver was delivering mail from new hampshire to portland. police investigating after a local mayor is threatened because he's gay. doug: the mayor of holyoke going public. newscenter 5's julie loncich has his response.

i think i'll be fine, like i can take it. julie: but this was too much. he's openly gay. when this note arrived, he paused and then posted, sharing the anonymous mail on his facebook page, which reads, you are one of the most selfish people that i know due to your gay lifestyle. you are going down. hate mail, moore says, isn't uncommon, but this was something else entirely. >> i think, you kno postelection culture that has been, i think, magnified over the last week and a half or so, i think a lot of people have been emboldened to have more overt displays of homophobia and racism and xenophobia. julie: in his second term now, other constituents are promising to stand by his side. >> i think it's important for me as a public official to recognize that no area of this

homophobia. julie: as of friday evening, that facebook post had been seen 1,000 time. rhondella: more than 300 calls have come into the newly created state harassment hotline. doug: attorney general maura healey's office is set up to support hateful behavior following the november 8 election. >> they range from road and called the "n" word. in our state, folks. i just want to be really clear. this stuff is real, where people came out and had latino couple came out and had their car keyed. trump go home. doug: she says americans need to get back to an old-fashioned notion there is right and there is wrong. this morning, boston mayor marty

the mayor is inviting neighbors to discuss his plans for a year-long project to talk about racism and help healing the city's scars. the goal is to hold talks with small groups and reach out to all neighborhoods. the time is 5:40 on saturday morning. everybody has a different way of cooking their thanksgiving turkey. rhondella: if you deep-fry yours, you may want to listen up. the best advice to make sure your turkey cooking is safe. doug: gotta watch that one. also this morning -- caught on camera. it it even looks like soap. but it's not. we're going to explain what this is all about coming up. kelly ann? kelly ann: and speaking of snow, we could be seeing some creeping in for later this weekend.

doug: how many times have we seen this? caught on camera. my goodness! a car barrelling through a restaurant in oregon. it went deep into that dining room, plowing through the doors and windows. driver said he accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake. he was trying to park. luckily, nobody inside was hurt. check this out. that is not snow you're seeing

hangar, normally used to put out fires. yesterday it discharged accidentally, started spilling onto the streets. by midday, the sea of foam was several feet deep. look at this dude. some couldn't just keep themselves from going through it. he says he rode his bike through, couldn't see anything. it's just a fluffy mess. rhondella: i have the real accident. more than 300 crashes reported already with ice and wind gusts reducing visibility. drivers warned to stay off the road and some big delays at denver international airport. but some say it's about time. >> it's overdue, so we were expecting it a long time ago. so we're pretty prepared for it. rhondella: snow falling 4 inches per hour in some places with temperatures plummeting into the teens. icy roads are going to be

doug: there are plenty of thanksgiving day football games where the snow was on the sidelines. rhondella: i'm not used to this mildness. i have thoroughly enjoyed it. kelly ann: this is more abnormal for us than seeing the snowfall. at this point, we're wondering, okay, what's the deal? some of that snow that brought those blizzard conditions to the midwest will try to creep into our area sunday/monday. yeah, yeah. so a lot of us won't see that accumulating snowfall, but we're going to d few snowflakes can't be ruled out for your sunday night. here's what's going on. we have that storm track moving through the midwest. rainfall is the initial concern as we head into tomorrow morning. but there's a wraparound cool air behind the system. and that is what's bringing that chance of snow which right now is bringing blizzard conditions as we move through much of the great lakes region and that big cooldown as well. as that pushes toward our area, we will see that chance of rain

then it's that sunday nighttime period where we could see a few snowflakes even into the overnight and into monday morning as well. right now, things are dry and clear. really not a cloud in sight. that will change this afternoon. we will see clouds especially moving onto the coastline which will play a huge part with our temperature forecast for today. right now, our temperatures looking nice and mild. we're at 45 degrees in downtown boston. plymouth at 50. te 54 degrees. that's playing a part with those coastal temperatures this morning. you move inland. that's where we see a few 20's on the board. pitts field, 28 degrees. kite a bit cooler inland, the opposite this afternoon because clouds that move onto the coast will keep our temperatures in the 50's. as you move inland where that sun will be a bit stronger, that's where temperatures could inch towards 60 degrees this afternoon. so colder for the coast.

hour, clouds are building in and temperatures will fall into the 40's. right now we do have a storm system which is off the coast, really not a huge impact for us, but it's that wraparound air that's bringing some of those clouds right onto the coastline for today. that will continue to be a concern through the evening, but then we're watching that cold front with that rainfall, which pushes right through as we head into the overnight hours tonight and into your sunday morning. as that pushes through, we see that chance of snow initially just hanging out in the vermont and even upstate new york. but by later sunday afternoon with that cold air in place, some of that snow will try to inch its way even toward the worcester hills. we're talking about a light coating at most as we move from the saturday night, sunday timeframe. inland, that's where heavier snowfall accumulations are expected. most of us missing out on this, including downtown boston, where at most we'll see a snowflake or two. seven-day forecast, well,

start to cool down. we have gusty winds for monday. cold enough that we're talking about wind chills in the teens. that's something that sticks around throughout the entire day on monday afternoon. the rest of the seven-day, of course, all eyes on thanksgiving where we do see a new chance of rain and even some snowflakes trying to move through for thanksgiving morning. of course, we'll keep you updated on that chance of the storm track. rhondella: thank you, kelly ann. the time is 5:48. checking some of o possible police impersonator. a woman claims she was pulled over by a man in an unmarked car with two blue lights. the man asked her and her passenger for an i.d. anyone in a similar situation should drive to a well-lit area and call 9-1-1. rhondella: edward spires says he was dismissed from the service in 1948 because he's gay. he wants his status upgraded to

spires' attorney says he's in poor health and would like to have a military funeral. doug: a sheriff's deputy in florida is off the job after allegedly lying about an incident during a traffic stop and here it is. the deputy claims that a woman shoved him and grabbed her license back during that traffic stop, but the sheriff says the video of that incident proves otherwise and that it didn't happen that way. charges against the woman are now being dropped. rhondella: f a warning about what could happen if you deep-fry a turkey the wrong way. this is what you don't want to happen on thanksgiving day. it's what can happen if you put a frozen turkey in hot oil. firefighters recommend setting the fire more than 10 feet away from your home. make sure the turkey is thawed and dry. and keep an eye on the oil temperature. doug: when you do it right, it is delicious. it's that time of year when you may be looking for a good, hard cider. but how about serving up a brew

massachusetts. we ferment it slowly over the winter in our cellar next door, and as it's fermenting, it turns into alcohol. we age it either in a barrel or in a tank, and then it's a hard cider. doug: that's just the beginning. this building that once housed the first gas station in salem now serves as a tasting room so the public can sample his concoctions and get that all-important feedback. >> not everyone is an all-star. some are. people say interesting. thank you, but no thanks in the future. some people say, wow. doug: al says although his company is rooted in tradition, they are unique to the core. >> nothing's wrong. we're learning every time we do something. that's the most satisfying part of what we do. doug: the stuff is far out there. it's so good. you can find far from the tree locally in over 400 bars and restaurants and liquor stores.

the best part here, she hatched the plan all on her own. the donut man has rewarded her with free donuts forever! rhondella: wow! that's wonderful. and a big turnout for a local girl battling cancer. 3-year-old lola rose anderson of middleton is fighting a rare cancer. she got a special ride flanked by motorcycles from across the area. cops for kids with cancer donated $5,000 to lola well done. doug: indeed. rhondella: and holiday travel is fast approaching. doug: signs are up on the highway warning drivers to plan ahead. there's good news for drivers on the mass pike. the changing construction plans that could -- could -- lighten traffic. rhondella: a former massachusetts governor expected to meet with the president-elect today. the position mitt romney is being considered for. doug: 5:56 on this saturday morning. starting to see the skies lighten ever so slightly.
