emily: good morning. it is monday, november 21. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. searching for suspects in the beating death of a woman in lowell. the clues police are looking into and the key witness account that could lead to an arrest. emily: breaking overnight, ambush attacks on police officers around the country. in the overnight hours. randy: rally against hate in massachusetts. after a series of hostile incidents, the plans to bring the community together. emily: first, a frosty morning, video from south boston. snow in parts of the state. temperatures dipping below freezing. cindy, i will admit, i was not prepared. cindy: are we ever prepared for the first time of the season? just some very light snow

maybe a sugar coating on grassy areas and car tops. there's heavier snow through western massachusetts and the berkshires. flurries reading into the city, not amounting to ch. the roads are generally okay. a lot of road crews have been treating the roads as well. west of worcester from warren, orange and berry, we're looking at snow showers as well all associated with the same storm that's been impacted us over the it is sitting to our north and churning up the winds. that is the big story. wind advisories up till 10:00 p.m. there could be gusts to 50 miles an hour. sustained winds are 15 to 25. wind chills right now 11 in worcester. it feels like 22 in ston. the actual temperatures are in the 20's and lower 30's and we are not going to get out of the 30's today. flurries end this morning. sun and clouds throughout the day. noontime, upper 30's and wind

cold start to the week. let's get you out to the roads. good morning, olessa. olessa: good morning, cindy. for the most part, the roads are quiet. live look outside. a check of the pike by alston-brighton eastbound at the top of the screen. not looking at a whole lot as far as construction. it's a quiet start in boston. no issues on 93 or the expressway and south, 24 looking go. route 3 as well. as you travel the pike, eastbound ride no problems right now. 128 looks good as well. your trip north of town is we're expecting trains and buses to srt on schedule. emily: thank you. right now a heartbreaking story in lowell. a mother of four beaten to death. one of her sons, a witness to the attack. this morning, no arrests have been made. randy: witnesses aren't talking about what happened there, and the eyeopener's doug meehan is in lowell. those witnesses are trying to point police in the right direction. doug: yeah, they are, randy. good morning. those witnesses not afraid to

who was behind it. they tell newscenter 5 it started at a party at these apartments, but it is unclear what sparked the deadly assault. 44-year-old gloribel gloribel gloribel orengo was attacked. mostly girls attacked that woman. >> everybody knows these girls. they're a pack of wolves. and it's disgusting that they continue to be streets and beat mothers when they took a mother away from her kids. right there on the street by herself with her down syndrome son. doug: now, witnesses say that boy held his mother in his arms waiting for help. there are surveillance cameras in the area, but it is unclear at this point whether or not they captured the attack. we're live in lowell this morning, doug meehan, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: doug, thank you.

hit-and-run in chelsea is expected in court. surveillance cameras showed arnold hernandez hitting a woman. a tip from a family member helped them make the arrest on saturday. the victim is expected to recover. randy: police are searching for the driver who plowed into a northborough home after a police chase on hudson street overnight into sunday. an daughter-in-law and son were asleep inside. the car involved in a case on interstate 290 which was called off when it left the highway. emily:reaking news, police officers targeted in three states. one officer killed. the eyeopener's erika tarantal tracking overnight developments. erika: we begin in st. louis where a police officer was ambushed late last night, investigators saying the suspect in that case was killed in a shootout with police.

shot twice in the face just sitting in his cruiser around 7:30 local time. he is expected to recover. also, a suspect in custody after a police officer is shot in sanibel, florida, during a traffic stop. the suspect tomb off from the scene but was arrested a short time later. that officer, jared ciccone, is expected to be okay as well. in san antonio, the search continues for a man who killed this police officer. detective benjamin marconi was shotus police headquarters. he was writing a ticket when the suspect, possibly driving this car, parked behind his cruiser, got out and shot him. >> most families would be celebrating the holidays. sapd will be burying one of its own because of an ultimate act of cowardice by a suspect who will be caught and brought to justice. erika: investigators are looking at surveillance video including

possible motives whether it could be related to an officer-involved shooting earlier sunday. randy: a new call for unity after dozens of reports of hate crimes in the commonwealth. the eyeopener's sera congi is at the state house in boston where people will be speaking up and lobbying later this morning. sera: it is called massachusetts speaks out against hate rally set for 11:00 here at the state house. among those attending include general maura healey. now, one week ago, healey set up a harassment hotline, and so far there have been more than 300 calls, 60 of them substantive calls. the hotline set up in response to increased reports of threatening behavior to minorities and women since the november 8 election. now, among those reports include donald trump supporters who sped through the campus of wellesley college yelling slurs the day after the election.

james mattis, frontrunner for secretary of defense. trump met with former massachusetts governor mitt romney, vice president-elect mike pence said romney is under, quote, active and serious consideration to become secretary of state. doug: new rules after a deadly train crash in new jersey. the push to screen engineers for sleeping habits. trapped on a sinking ship. the salvage mission in new bedford that quickly turned dangerous. snow showers. we will see sunshine. the big story, the cold and wind. really feeling like winter out there. we'll take a look at how long and a look toward the holiday ahead. erika? erika: ambush attacks on police in different cities across the country. overnight, police shot and killed a suspect who they say attacked an officer in st. louis. that officer is expected to survive. another officer was killed by a man in san antonio. the suspect there remains at large.

emily: a sea rescue off the coast of new bedford. a fishing boat taking on water in buzzards bay. the coast guard was killed in for a salvage operation that quickly turned into a rescue. that fishing boat left new bedford days before returning yesterday morning with 5,000 pounds of scallops. it appears they hit a rock when the captain put the boat on autopilot to use the bathroom. they tried to salvage the captain jeff with no luck. windy conditions making it worse. >> they shouldn't have been in that area. it must have been obviously a navigational error. emily: nobody was seriously hurt.

randy: some heavy snow working across the east coast now. communities in new york and virginia reporting over 1/2 foot of heavy wet snow this weekend. other regions are expected to get over 20 inches before thanksgiving. emily: communities in western massachusetts also got hit with some snow. in boston, though, just some flakes. those flurries really not enough

enough to coat the cars. cindy: i know. then you go what is that? emily: enough for me to go where the heck is my scraper? i shod have done this yesterday. cindy: i know. we've ln -- been enjoying a mild november. there are still areas looking at snow showers right now. i want to show you some of those totals out in the western part of the state especially, because they were impressive. you can see 9 lenox had nearly a foot. it's still snowing. certainly in certain vermont, over a foot of snow in some of those areas. additional accumulation of a few inches out this way. we're talking about wet snowflakes in the air with some coatings on some of the grassy surfaces and car tops locally. not a big impact with the snow. the big story today the winds. these are the wind gusts over 30, 40 miles an hour on

the day. there will be wind gusts 40, 50 miles an hour. be prepared for the wind. you can see it very active through the entire day. these winds don't really die down until thevernight hours. so they could cause some damage. trees certainly are weakened, no doubt. wind chills are running 10 grees in worcester. elsewhere it feels like the 20's. you want to dress for winter today. actual temperatures running in the 20's to around the freezing mark. that's it. it's going to be a slow climb today. er this is a current snapshot of the radar right now. let me take you tighter, because we've got flakes flying around the city of boston up through burlington, lowell, back into metrowest as well. they're very light snow showers. they're not amounting to much. but still some flakes in the air here just southwest of the worcester area, down toward south bridge and up toward orange and berry as well. we have snow showers out there. the storm is sitting and spinning to our north wrapping in the wind and cold and a

morning. a lot of that will dry up over the course of the day. low 30's worcester. upper 30's boston. barely touching 40 degrees on the cape. wind chills getting no higher than the 20's today. that's what you want to dress for. notice how the snow showers and flurries wind down after lunchtime. western massachusetts, they may persist. it's a blend of sun and clouds through the afternoon. period of clouds overnight. the skies try to clear and we're looking at another cold ni the 20's through the overnight hours. this storm system is going to pull away tomorrow a little bit. so the winds relax. we should sneak back into the lower 40's. high pressure noses in tuesday into wednesday, but notice this system in the middle of the country. that's the one we're going to be watching as we get toward thanksgiving. good travel weather locally, but as we head toward thanksgiving day, it looks like we could have a little bit of rain around. if you're traveling wednesday, eastern seaboard looking okay. it's the middle of the country that that storm is going to be

later diagnosed with sleep apnea and that may have led to the crash that killed oneoman on theplatform. the engineer says he does not remember it. randy: also new this monday morning, self-driving cars will come to boston before the year is over. a cambridge-based start up, nutonomy, is starting to run the cars in south boston. they have an agreement with the city. the cars will be tested in a small but public area, and they will have a drive nutonomy has been running tests on vehicles in singapore for months now. just days before millions of americans are set to tavel for thanksgiving, a planned strike at one of the busiest airports in the country. airport employees at chicago's o'hare are expected to announce exact plans today. the union that includes baggage handlers and cabin cleaners and janitors and other employees is fighting for a pay increase. they say service will be

emily: your economy this monday. stocks in japan and china rise overnight, but other asian shares were muted as investors factor in a suspected december federate cut. investors are watching for the national fed index. the samsung brand still fl flourishing. samsung users are as loy their brand as apple users. 91% of current users say they would buy another samsung song. the poll found people who knew about the recall were just as interested in samsung as those who did not. randy: salvation army kicking up its annual red kettle campaign today. the bell ringers will be stationed throughout the city during the holiday season as they raise money to support those in need. and today's kickoff begins at noon. emily: your trending stories

randy: good morning. we're following breaking news in your early news to go. emily: the suspect involved in an ambush attack on a police officer in st. louis dead, killed in a shootout with police after the suspect ambushed one of their own. that officer was shot twice in the face last night when the suspect pulled up next to him.

also breaking -- a suspect is in custody after a police officer is shot in sanibel, florida. this happened during a traffic stop sunday night. that suspect took off from the scene but was arrested a short time later. that officer is expected to be okay. randy: in a matter of hours, lawyer for murderer gary lee simpson will present their case in his sentencing retrial. sampson was sentenced to death for a murder spree in 2001 that left three people dead in ma he was granted a new sentencing trial on appeal. federal prosecutors rested their case on thursday of last week after family members of those killed took the stand. emily: family members of those onboard the doomed malaysia airlines flight 370 will help search for debris. investigatorso far have identified six pieces of wre wreckage they believe came from the plane that disappeared in march 2014. loved ones will head to madagascar to search for clues as to what happened.

beijing. randy: the remaing hospitals in a war-torn city have stopped providing treatment after being damaged by bombs. the world health organization says the hospitals in aleppo included two general treatment centers and one for children. it's unclear if they'll be able to reopen. humanitarian agencies believe the attacks were deliberate. emily: protestors face off with police in north dakota over a controversial pipeline project.o enforcement late yesterday as they tried to cross a bridge on a state highway. it's unclear how many people were arrested. demonstrators have protested the dakota access pipeline for months, saying it could pollute drinking water near tribal land. attorney general maura healey's probe into exxon mobil lands her a court-ordered deposition. healey will have to defend her probe that looks into whether the oil giant deceived consumers and investors.

emily: annual tradition for us. as you can see for thousands of others. volunteers working hard to make sure that parade is a big success. it really was. it was such a nice time, cindy, wasn't it? and the weather wasn't too bad. randy: we did laugh snow, paper snow. cindy: the first flakes there in plymouth, absolutely. although it was cloudy in the plymouth area. a lot of the state had bright sunshine. from plymouth to the cape, we we're all dealing with the clouds this morning thanks to the storm that is really kicking up the wind. it's an impact weather day due to the wind and cold. there are snow showers wrapping around the system. heavier snow from the berkshires out through new york state. a lot of lake-effect snow. locally, snow showers and flurries. wind advisory up till 10:00 this evening. could be some gusts close to 50 miles per hour. you can see the gusts through

they are not going to quit until the overnight hours. it is a windy one for today. and those wind chills getting no higher than the 20's today. so it is feeling like winter. that's what you want to dress for today. we'll see a little sunshine this afternoon. temperatures, though, not even getting up to 40 degrees in boston. look at new york, philly and d.c. stuck in the 40's with lake-effect snows. notice chicago, bright sunshine, 40 degrees, a little wedge of nicer weather is going to build on in. you can sea see it here. there's the area of high pressure building in. the winds will die down. as we get toward the middle of the week on wednesday, this storm's working across the country. this will make a run toward us as we get toward thanksgiving. but if you're doing some traveling on wednesday, it looks great. look at this coming up tomorrow. we're going to sneak back into the lower 40's. lots of sunshine in the forecast tuesday. so tuesday and wednesday, the weather looks quiet.
