cindy and a look at your forecast for today. another cold start. cindy: another cold start, absolutely. we've got reading in the 20's and lower 30's, just above the freezing mark in boston, but that wind is still active. we're getting gusts in spots over 20 miles per hour. so you want to dress for that wind-chill factor this morning, which is running only in the teens here out through worcester county. elsewhere it feels like it's in the lower 20's. that is what you want to dress for this morning. storm has been impacting our area for the past couple of days. it is still hanging around, al think we'll see a little bit more sunshine, a little bit less wind. we've got some patchy cloud cover out there this morning. those clouds will be thinning out as the sun comes up at 6:44 this morning. close to 40 degrees at lunchtime. and in the lower 40's this afternoon. that wind out of the west 12 to 20 miles an hour. wind chills in the 30's this afternoon. actual highs sneak in at the lower 40's. your travel forecast for the holiday coming up.

ge that is spoken by more than 1/3 of the residents of this city. and i think that my gaining some basic skills in cape verdean creole improves my ability to represent the entire community in this city. emily: the mayor also says he got the okay from brockton's cfo and auditor before submitting the expense for the classes to the city. new clues in a deadly hit-and-run in chelsea that is still unsolved. this happened back in june. police releasing this video of the car believed to have hit the 25-year-old victim in hopes of making an arrest. police are hoping to identify this man believed to be connected to the crime. photos were taken of him in the area of the plaza mexico restaurant and bar on washington street. the car is believed to be a 2007 to 2009 silver toyota camry se. the car should have damage to the front driver's side. randy: right now investigators ngo figure out wt caused a fe that left a man trapped on his this happened in hudson, new hampshire, and this is a picture of the man who had a hard time escaping because of the thick black smoke. the fire broke out just before 3:00 yesterday afternoon at the emerson garden condominiums. >> the firemen said wait right there. they helped me down the ladder. took my dog down the ladder, two cats down the ladder. they were unbelievable. randy: no one was seriously hurt. new this morning, we've learned that the powerful earthquake that rattled japan's northern coast yesterday was an aftershock of the deadly 2011 earthquake.

today. we have bright sunshine in the forecast today across southern new england, the mid-atlantic states. traveling in the northeast, overall, you're looking okay. traveling through the middle of the country, there is a storm around the chicago area with rain/snow north of there. thunderstorms down to the gulf coast. that's the area that we are watching today. the storm is pulling out of the rockies with some wintry weather, and there will be a wintry side up toward the northern great lakes. this is a storm we'll be watching for us on thanksgiving day. it's not a big st going to bring in light precipitation especially during the first half of the day. in the meantime, got our storm from sunday and yesterday still spinning to our north, so it's still kicking up the winds a little bit. you can see there are patches of clouds, too, especially closer to the coastline. the temperatures this morning, they're cold. it's in the 20's and lower 30's, but that wind is still active enough that we're getting gusts over 20 miles an hour. so the wind chill is a factor as you're stepping out. you do want to dress for the

didn't get out of the 20's yesterday. it's going to be stuck in the 20's this morning. after lunchtime, the winds not as strong as yesterday, and with the sch and temperatures warming up, wind chills will be running in the 30's. overall, it's a more comfortable day than yesterday. still on the colder side, though. looking for a high of 42 in boston. mid 30's through the worcester hills. lots of lower 40's down toward the cape as well. better than yesterday. cold tonight. back down in the 20's most of the suburbs, even below freezing in boston with a high pressure on top of us tomorrow. tomorrow looks like a nice day if you're traveling. however, we watch this system. as we get toward wednesday night and first thing on thanksgiving morning, cold air is going to be in place as that precipitation moves on in. a little strip of some snow may come in first thing in the morning. it looks very light. could linger through lunchtime. as the temperatures warm in the afternoon, we're going to be left with a couple of rain showers. doesn't look like much in terms of any accumulation.

could be more than an inch in western massachusetts. not a big impact, but if you're out and about on thanksgiving during the morning hours, some of those football games could be left with snow. traveling across the country, pretty quiet overall. temperatures on friday into the weekend still stuck in the 40's. friday night into early saturday, another chance of rain. right now, sunday is looking okay. so nothing big in terms of any big storms, but some showers off and what we're expecting. a live look outside at the pike. a check by alston-brighton. that's eastbound heading to the top of the screen. no problems there. let's get to the maps and check the rest of your ride as you travel into boston. construction on 93 south is gone. we had a project leverett connector. that picked up early. as you head south, route 3, 93, 95, all clear. so far the pike looks good. no problems as you head north. we're expecting trains and buses to continue the morning on

in brockton, and we can show you some video of what happened there. the suspect drives up to two debi's convenience store on pleasant street, gets out, tosses a rock to the front door. doesn't break the door. he'll try it again. no luck the second time. so he, after this, he just finally will give up and get back into his van and he will drive away. no arrests so far in sunday's early morning incident. ends up in this fiery rescue in michigan. you can see it was a huge fire. the driver of this tanker truck says he crashed while trying to avoid the three deer. several other truck drivers sprang into action, pulling the victim from the flames just moments before the whole area burned. amazingly, he is expected to be okay. emily: your economy headlines this tuesday. the company that makes the epipen has agreed to a multi-million-dollar settlement

however, mylan and its ceo have no plans to return to capitol hill for a congressional hearing set for next week. mylan will pay $465 million to settle allegations that it's overbilled medicaid. the cost of that lifesaving device has skyrocketed in recent years. a check of the markets now, asian shares rise nearly across the board overnight amid higher oil prices and a rally on wall street. right now, stock futures here are higher. investors keeping an eye out for the monthly report home sales that's due out today. randy: well, no one wants to spend all of thanksgiving day in the kitchen. emily: no. new this morning, olessa went to a top chef for some expert advice. olessa: we went to puritan and company in cambridgea farm-focused restaurant. they're chef has lots of tips for us on how to save time on thanksgiving. check it out. we all know turkey is a part of the meal that takes the longest, but owner and chef will gilson

[laughter] that's nice. emily: silver lining there. randy: still on the cold side. cindy: the bar used to be here. we're probabl n up to where we were. emily: we spent a good portion of november -- i got spoiled. cindy: now we've dramatically gone the other way. average high this time of year is close to 50. we'll be falling a little shorted the next few days. in fact, right through thanksgiving. don't expect us to get out of the low to mid 40's. starting out this morning with temperatures running right now in the mid 20's out in the worcester area. lower 30's closer to the coastline. but that wind, that's what gets you. the wind is still active.

morning on schedule, and north of town once again, we're in good shape here on 93 south, route 3, no concern as you travel west along the pike, and once again south of town everyone getting by at the speed limit. today is expected to be the biggest travel day of the area. the toll areas at the connecticut border and sturbridge. timing is everything. experts say the worst times to travel are today between noon and 5:00 and year with the open tolling in effect in the massachusetts turnpike. massdot plans to shut down road construction starting at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow or earlier depending on traffic today. emily? emily: thank you. we're following breaking news right now on the eye. randy: erika is tracking that new information. erika: that breaking news from tennessee. the driver in this deadly school bus crash is now under arrest. at least six children were killed. the 24-year-old driver facing five counts of vehicular

other stories we're following. a 50-year-old man is dead after a crash involving a car and tractor-trailer in danvers. this happened on route 1. no charges filed. former house speaker sal dimasi preparing to get out of prison. he's expected to leave north carolina this morning and return to massachusetts. he was granted early release for his corruption sentence because of cancer and ongoing health issues. randy: right now, the t commuter rail is under fire after new numbers p emily: the eyeopener's doug meehan is live in worcester where riders probably know this pain all too well, doug. doug: oh, you're right about that, emily and randy. good morning. for those that ride the commuter rails, they know there's going to be delays. this new report is so serious, the people that run the commuter rail line say they're enacting a task force to figure out what is going on here. in the last 30 days, just 61% of the trains on the worcester line have run on time.

number drops to 49%. keolis general manager david scorey told massdot board members yesterday there may be a number of factors involved including construction along the mass pike that forces train to use one track and slow down, but with winter coming, commuter concerns are high given breakdowns in the recent years in the past. scorey says he hopes the $2.5 million in motor overhauls will help keep the entire fleet and state lawmakers recently called for more transparency about those delays, including when keolis is fined for not meeting service expectations. we're live in worcester this morning. doug meehan, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: doug, thank you. right now one woman is in the hospital after a house fire in new bedford. she was found barely conscious in the room where firefighters say the fire started. this was the scene on pleasant street. nearly a dozen people displaced because of this fire. state fire marshal investigating

were sounding there. massachusetts college has removed the american flag from the campus entirely. days after the election, someone actually burned the american flag at hampshire college in amherst. the school then put up a new one, lowered it to half-staff in solidarity with those concerned with a trump presidency. that created a backlash, so the school administration dec emily: a pet shop owner in new hampshire is searching for a puppy stolen from that store. this tiny chihuahua was taken from the little shop of pets in portsmouth. the timeline of the theft is still in question. either the puppy was taken right before the store closed or just soon after it opened yesterday. the puppy is in need of special care. the store's owner concerned about its health. >> we don't know what it's on and what's happening and it could very easily crash and turn

could be a touch of light snow or freezing drizzle around in the morning as temperatures come up to 40 degrees in the afternoon. emily? emily: thank you. your health. a new amputation technique is being called the greatest development in limb research since world war ii. it's a partnership between doctors at brigham and women's and researchers at m.i.t.'s media lab. surgeons say it allows them to preserve nerves that patients like jim ewing here might otherwise lose with a traditional saw. and that would give them more control over a morean prosthetic, being able to wiggle toes and turn out the ankles. jim ewing is the first patient to undergo the procedure and he's excited for the future. >> the fact that i'm going to get to be the first to try out this new foot and try out this new technology, i don't know. who wouldn't want to do it? emily: ewing should be walking on that new prosthetic in about six months. randy: it's now 20 minutes before the top of the hour. in news to go, how a driver may

braintree split. it's 15 minutes braintree into boston along the expressway. west of town, so far no concerns. the pike eastbound is 15 minutes, 495 to 128. 128 looks good. and 93 southbound, a patch of delays out of methuen. we're in good shape down to the leverett connector. trains and buses starting on schedule. randy: breaking news centered around that deadly school bus accident in tennessee. emily: erika is tracking overnight developments. erika: the driver of the school bus is under absolutely devastating crash. 24-year-old johnthony walker is facing vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving charges with more likely to come. the 35 children on the bus were in kindergarten through fifth grade. five died at this horrific scene. another at the hospital. more are critically hurt right now. police say excessive speed was likely a factor. lines of people waiting for hours overnight to donate blood. the community is heartbroken

this morning to investigate. sera, out to you. sera: thank you, erika. and investigation is underway into allegations that a 6-year-old student sexually assaulted a 7-year-old classmate on a boston school bus. the incident first reported to the administration at boston renaissance charter school in hyde park on november 3. now, school officials say they took immediate action and contacted authorities. d.c.f. is investigating and has contacted the district attorney's office. but parents at the school only first learned about the incident this weekend from social media. the charter school is now assuring parents that they took all the appropriate steps to ensure student safety as well as the privacy of both students involved. live in hyde park this morning, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: delays are an expected partly of life on the commuter rail, but a report says those delays are so bad, a task force

why. over the past 30 days, only 61% of the trains here on the worcester line were on time, and when it comes to the morning commute, that number drops to 49%. the company in charge told massdot board members yesterday that there may be a number of factors for those significant delays. included among them, construction on the mass pike that forces trains to slow down. the hope is that a major overhaul to the trains' engines will improve it during the winter months. we're live in worcest doug meehan, wcvb newscenter 5. >> do you have anything to say to his family? >> i'm sorry. emily: new this morning, the suspect in the murder of a san antonio police officer apologizing to the officer's family. otis mckane was arrested last night accused of ambushing officer benjamin marconi sunday afternoon while marconi was writing a traffic tickets.

of the deadly earthquake near fukushima. rooftop cameras caught the moment the quake struck. no damage from waves. japan's meteorological agency warns another large quake could hit in the next few days. randy: former state house speaker in massachusetts sal dimasi is expected to return home today after being released early from prison. last week dimasi was granted a rare compassionate release because of his cancers. he was sentenced to federal prison five years ago for extortion and fraud. dimasi is one of a dozen federal prisoners being given early releases since 2013. emily: a salem police officer accused of sexually assaulting an inmate has resigned. he pleaded not guilty. he resigned on november 10 and will not receive his pension. butler is free on bail until a december hearing.

woman beaten to death outside an apartment complex. loved ones gathered to remember 44-year-old gloribel orengo. she was killed during a confrontation after leaving a party saturday night. witnesses say that they saw a group of men and women kicking and punching her all in front of the woman's son. her family says they know who is responsible, but so far no arrests have been made. emily: august. she'd gone out for a run. last week, investigators said they were looking for a dark-colored s.u.v. seen in the area around the time she was killed. randy: a national loan company will be paying $2.4 million in fines after an investigation by the massachusetts attorney general's office. xerox education services, known as a.c.s., charged excessive

applications for repayment plans. the a.g.'s office began investigation in december 2015 for violations. emily: a former u.s.a. gymnastics doctor is facing sex abuse charges. dr. larry nassar was arrested yesterday in indiana and will face a judge today. there are reports this morning that there are at least 36 alleged victims claiming he abused them. dr. nassar left his position last fall. he was fired from michigan state university in september. randy: close call for kids in by a skidding police car. this happened over the weekend as officers chased a stolen car. a cruiser was hit by another car. that sent the cruiser out of control and nearly into four kids standing on the sidewalk. the police cruiser then smashed into a parked vehicle. kids were okay. police officer who crashed was not seriously hurt. the car thief got away. emily: a day after canceling the remainder of his tour, kanye west is hospitalized in los angeles. abc news reports the rapper

the hospital voluntarily. before he canceled the remaining 21 shows on his tour, including boston, west went on a rant on stage in sacramento before walking off just 30 minutes in. randy: patriots defenseman tackle alan branch will miss four games after testing positive for marijuana. branch will appeal so that he's still expected to play sunday against the jets. he started nine of the patriots' ten games this season. he was alrea august for violating team rules. emily: the celtics hit the gas late in the game against the timberwolves, isaiah thomas scoring 29 points, 20 in the second half. the c's were down 13 going into the fourth before a 19-0 run. al horford adding 20 points to propel the celtics. they take the lead off this steal here about six minutes to play. they keep it 99-93 the final. randy: "dancing with the stars"

close tonight after jana kramer was sent home last night. final three contestants are olympic gymnast laurie hernandez, race car driver james hinchcliffe and nfl player calvin johnson. emily: boston's beloved frog pond is opening for the winter season today. every winter, thousands flock to the boston common landmark to skate on the ice. the pond is open every day starting at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. this afternoon. randy: we can just guess that the ice is in great condition this morning. emily: based on the temperatures. cindy: you got it. absolutely! it would have been a different story last week or the week before. most of this month has been pretty mild until we hit sunday. things changed. we didn't get out of the 30's yesterday. we'll manage the lower 40's today. this average is closer to 50 and we're not going to get there through thanksgiving. cold pattern setting up.

it is just above freezing in boston. the wind is still out there. we're gusting over 20 miles an hour in a few spots. wind chills this morning running in the teens and 20's. route the morning hours, the wind chill is in the 20's. once we get past lunchtime, wind chills will be in the 30's. better than yesterday. notice a lot of sunshine throughout the day. it's a little brighter and less windy than yesterday. low 40's for a high in boston, down to the cape a little cooler, mid to upper 30's through the worcester hills. a couple of patches o breaking up. the storm is finally pulling away, and high pressure is nosing in. we're in great shape both today and tomorrow. there's a storm coming out of the middle of the country that we're going to be watching for thanksgiving. so tonight skies are mainly clear. we're down in the 20's and lower 30's. cold start tomorrow, but a dry day. high pressure on top of us. great travel weather across the northeast. here comes this next system, and as it works toward us, there'll be cold air in place. first thing thanksgiving morning, a little bit of very light snow or a mix with some
