>> some rain moving in for parts of the area on this thanksgiving afternoon. kelly ann shows us what to expect over the next several hours. jc: a deadly wrong-way crash on 495 what we've now learned about the victim. ben: and, a look at just some of the thanksgiving celebrations going on today, all over the boston area. right now on newscenter 5 at 4, some wet weather moving into the area, setting up some possible travel issues for people heading home from thanksgiving dinner. thanks for joining us and happy thanksgiving, i'm ben simmoneau. jc: and i'm jc monahan. we're here in the weather center with meteorologist kelly ann cicalese.

us. anchor: we have some rain on this holiday and some slick travel. see that moving in from the west, even some signs of snow. that is going to be enticing much of new england. downtown boston, we are try but the clouds are thick overhead. it is an ominous a few light showers starting to pop up moving eastward. that is extending into new hampshire where we are seeing signs of snow mixing in. moving out the west there is no moving into the berkshires. we are not expecting the snow to break its way in but we will be seeing a chance of slick travel.

43 degrees. overnight is coming up. ben: one person has died after a tragic one way crash. jc: it happened early this morning on i-495 in plainville between exits 13 and 14. police say the driver was headed northbound in the southbound lane. newscenter 5's diane cho joins us live now from the foxboro state police barracks, with the latest on the investigation, diane? diane: we are on an overpass near this scene. investigators ar up going the wrong way. you can see how bad the damage was. a young male driver went north in the southbound lanes. the male driver hit a 21-year-old woman head on in the suv she was driving. this happened around 2:00.

with serious injuries. the investigation was still underway. reporter: more than 100-year-old thanksgiving tradition becomes an opportunity to honor a fallen hero. marlborough and hudson used their holiday football game to remember state trooper thomas clardy, who was hit and killed during a traffic stop in march. after a moment of silence, the clardy's youngest son, four-year-old noah, did the pre-game coin toss. >> my husband, i thought of him. it was snowing. i thought he was looking down wishing he was here to see the support from everybody. ben: trooper clardy was from hudson. his widow says thanksgiving was one of his favorite holidays and he always made a point to spend it with family. jc: all over the boston area, thanksgiving celebrations are underway. newscenter 5's todd kazakiewich gives us a look,

giving back, volunteering to serve people in need. mayor walsh, seen here leading the effort carving turkey at st. francis house, a homeless shelter in the city. >> the homeless population in our city, it's difficult, we've made some good progress, but coming by and let people know that we appreciate them. >> uplift our spirits. it's not we won't feel left behind, or something. reporter: the numbers prove progress is being made. over a thousand homeless people in the city of boston in the last two years. reporter: still, a large crowd for the holiday meal at the pine street inn is evidence of ongoing need. >> the vacancy rate and the high cost of living is forcing more working people into homelessness. reporter: bostonians are giving back in other ways too. about 140 seniors were treated to the annual 'little brothers-friends of the elderl'' thanksgiving celebration, complete with music and dancing.

here by myself. >> we take the place of their family. we make sure no one spends the holiday alone. reporter: boston is working to make sure no one is left behind, and everyone can find something to be thankful for. ben: macy's thanksgiving day parade goes off without a hitch in new york city. jc: security this year tighter than ever, amid terrorism concerns. the new york city police department out in full force with 3,000 officers, bomb-sniffing dogs and even rooftop snipers. parade an excellent target, so the fbi issued a warning urging caution. the extra security a comforting site for families. >> it is nice to see how many police we have here. >> it is important those vehicles are there. jc: there were no credible threats targeting the parade but they were not taking chances. u.s. troops in afghanistan are

mission headquarters in kabul. it included turkey and all the traditional side dishes. troops say it is always hard to be away from home, but are thankful they get to celebrate with each other. ben: president obama is releasing his final thanksgiving day message as commander-in-chief he is calling for national unity after the bitter and divisive presidential campaign. >> thanksgiving reminds us that no matter our differences w'ere still one people, part of something bigger than ourselves. we're communitiyes m neighbors that look out for one another. especially those among us with the least. we are simply americans. ben: the president also said that democracy is part of what makes america great, and we have a responsibility to protect it. jc: president-elect donald trump says it's a working thanksgiving for him. abc's lana zak reports, trump is spending the holiday in florida putting together his white house team.

trump is expected to name wilbur ross to head the commerce department. ross was the owner of the west virginia coal mine when a dozen miners were killed. regulators cited safety violations. he also named to women to his cabinet. >> i think it is interesting he is able to go beyond that seems to be the things that matters most to them in the campaign. she certainly was not loyal to him. reporter: and betsy devos. she issued a strong statement on common core tweeting i'm not a supporter. the president-elect is spending

sending out this message. >> it is my prayer we begin to heal our divisions and move forward strengthened by shared purpose and common resolve. reporter: even though it is thanksgiving the president-elect is tweeting and working. kerry responded they are looking forward to working with the administration. jc: jill stein is calling for a recount in three battleground states. she wants votes reviewed in wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania before the election is certified. she has raised $3 million to make that happen. some say the results show the possibility of hacks in key counties. ben: thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for what we have, but for some it means remembering who we've lost. newscenter 5's rhondella richardson has the story of a

into a path to success. >> hello. reporter: making the rounds is a snapshot of her remarkable life journey. >> i can sit with them, i can help them. i can guide them. i know how frustrating it is. i think it is amazing. i don't care. reporter: the lack of arrogance was refreshing says her staff. she moved to massachusetts in 1984 for an american dream that was literally almost shot down. in 1991 gang violence nearly killed her mother. >> she was shot coming from work. i was 23 years old.

three days. we were at the hospital for almost three months. it was tough. i became the head of household. reporter: that bullet paralyzed her mother who worked three jobs. >> my mom, she would not be alive. reporter: she evolved into a community leader and today into management. quite she ga m wanted. it is hard but it is amazing. reporter: she has two sons in college. her struggles are an example to others. >> a lot of people do not think it is possible. it is possible. reporter: proving she does it all, she makes the best barista also.

the ones you cannot see. jc: how some local veterans are helping each other heal invisible wounds. reporter: there is nothing wrong with asking for help. it takes a stronger person to ask for help. reporter: ryan has come full circle. he returned to massachusetts with spinal injuries and invisible wounds of war. he got help through the home base program. the red sox foundation dedicated to helping and healing post 9/11 veterans. >> it is free. it does not cost anything. maybe an hour a week. reporter: in the past seven years home base has treated 11,000 veterans and their families for the invisible wounds of war. everything from posttraumatic stress to depression, to substance abuse. >> if your sleep is off or your

reporter: he now works as an outreach coordinator, there every step of the way to help fellow veterans get through the program. >> there is that your connection. reporter: laura is an associate director. >> the treatment works the symptoms can be reduced to the point where folks no matter -- no longer meet the material for people. >> homebase life matters because we care. reporter: giving them the treatment and tools to truly come home. >> i use the same things to get myself into a better place. jc: all right. very nice. give thanks for what we have and for whether -- weather that will

moving in. it will be tricky for evening travel. stay inside and enjoy the food. that is what we are going to see. jc: we wish we were. anchor: we are seeing cooler conditions moving in. that is something we are going to watch. because we have that rain moving through the area, the combination means we could see slippery travel. move outside north and west. many of us are heading out for black friday shopping. that is prime time for the slippery road conditions before the sun rises. that will start to decrease as temperature start to increase. the steadiest unframed fall is expected for tonight around the 8:00 hour. that is when the heavy showers

spot of moisture is moving in from the west. a steadier shower expected until after sunset. we are seeing a few light showers moving through. this is along long 128 moving northward through the new hampshire seacoast as well. notice that is where the snow is starting area -- starting. temperature is now in the 40's. it is not significantly cold but as we start to cool, that is when we have concerns for travel , some of us will get closer to freezing point as we move inland. wind is nice and calm. they are going to start to shift as we move into the forecast tomorrow. and onshore wind starts to kick

store for us. things are relatively quiet for boston metro. shower start to spill in as we inch towards 8:00. it is that time frame this evening that we see the best chance of showers moving through the area. that sticks in place along the coast line. heading into the overnight rain is not looking heavy but it is spotty enough that we do see the potential for temperatures cooling that is prevalent moving west and north of 495. notice through new hampshire and maine we are seeing the snow falling. although it is not expected here monthly that could be colder moving through northern england. into tomorrow morning, they fill in as we have late showers. that will have warmer temperatures. we will start to decrease.

holding on to the 40's -- temperatures holding onto the 40's. as you move westward, that is what we could see travel for overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning. seven-day forecast we are starting to try out into sunday. temperatures, towards next week there is a sign of a warm-up heading our way. 50 d wednesday and thursday. the price will be some showers that move back into the area for later next week. ben: i will take the warmth. a winter wonderland. look at this in japan. the first november snow that the country has seen in 54 years. some areas expected to see up to six inches. in tokyo, electricity consumption spiked 95% as residents cranked the heat.

ben: once you finish thanksgiving dinner you may think about black friday shopping plans. more than 74 million people made purchases on black friday last year. jc: save clothing for another day. if that coat is not at least 50% off you are not getting a good deal. but it is a great time to score a bargain on tv's, smartphones and other electronics. beware of fake bargains, forbes magazine says some retailers inflate the discounts by marking up the suggested retail price, and when it comes to prices, don't settle for the price listed. experts suggest walking up to an employee and asking if there are additional deals. ben: are you a hagler?
