mixed reaction around the globe. celebrations in the streets overnight in miami's little havana. it is 6:00 on this saturday, november 26. i'm antoinette antonio. doug: i'm doug meehan. we'll have more on fidel castro in a minute. first we want to get to kelly ann with a damp start to the morning. how long will this continue? kelly ann: the next couple of hours as we see the sun rise this morning. in fact, dense fog advisory has now been issued. we're seeing some of the densest of fog as you're traveling through the valley, much of new hampshire and maine for this morning. that's in effect until 8:00 a.m. not no say outside of that area we're not seeing fog, it's densest in the new hampshire sea coast. visibility below a mile. that's what we're seeing in downtown boston. inland as well. you might allow for extra time for your travel this morning.

we track some of those showers onto the coast for later this morning and afternoon. right now we're mainly dry. we have clouds stuck in place. a few showers trying to make its way toward the cape and island. we'll be watching that throughout the day. temperatures getting out of the 30's and into the 40's as we head into the afternoon. doug and antoinette, i'll have a look at the track of the rainfall and what's expected as we see a warm-up later this week. doug: thank you. now more on that breaking news. the world reacting this morning to the death of antoinette: castro's brother, raul castro, announcing his brother's death last night, saying that he will be cremated this morning. fidel castro, one of the longest serving heads of state of cuba. he was a self-appointed president for life. banning free speech, freedom of assembly as well as a free press. he is responsible for thousands of executions and incarcerations of his political opponents. castro was 90 years old. doug: fidel castro taking power

1959, overthrowing a dictatorship that had been in power for a quarter of a century, promising a new future, sharing the country's wealth in its poorest citizens o. april 16, 1961, castro declares cuba a socialist state. what would follow, the bay of pigs, washington's ban on all cuban imports, and decades later the fall of the soviet union crippling the country's economy. he would reign for 49 years formly brother, raul. his resignation only coming after he underwent intestinal surgery tied to still unknown health issues. he would not be seen in public for four years. antoinette: as you know, we are entering a new era in cuba-u.s. relations. in march president obama became the first sitting u.s. president to visit the communist nation in nearly 70 years. the president reopened ties with cuba in 2014, that ended more

on route 9 in framingham sending a woman to the hospital. julie loncich explains what happened. reporter: police say the 50-year-old woman had left the walgreens when she attempted to cross busy route 9 in framingham just before 6:00. police say the framingham woman had an armful of groceries when she was hit by this honda accord. >> first thing i noticed. we were trying to figure out what was going. then i realized there was a on reporter: the victim was conscious but rushed to u-mass memorial, where doctors determined she sustained a skull fracture. police say her injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. residents in a nearby apartment building say pedestrians frequently attempt to beat the traffic here. >> a lot of people do cross over when it's red, a lot. it's sad. it's sad to hear. it's very sad to hear. reporter: the driver remained on scene. he is cooperative. police are telling me at this point it does not appear he will

withheld. in framingham, julie loncich, wcvb newscenter 5. antoinette: an investigation underway after a rock outside a school in harvard, massachusetts, has been vandalized. that rock at the broomfield school was covered with swastikas as well as racist, sexist and homophobic slurs. it was discovered yesterday morning. according to the "lowell sun," one of the swastikas is covering the star of david. a report was filed with police, and school administrators say they plan to take action, tolerance in its curriculum. doug: st. anthony's shrine is asking for the public's help to catch a vandalism suspect. this is the suspect. it's believed he vandalized the first floor and stole sound equipment and keys. a kiosk ripped off the wall. the crime happening early yesterday morning between 4:00 and 6:00. anybody with information is asked to contact boston police. antoinette: it was a crime caught on camera. this morning, police in newton

robbed a gas station last week. 33-year-old matthew skinner from newton walked into police headquarters yesterday morning to turn himself in. the surveillance video you're watching shows him storming into that gulf station armed with a long gun. nobody was hurt. friends are reacting this morning to the death of a young man in a wrong-way crash on thanksgiving morning. state police say james keating was going north in the southbound lanes of 495 in plainville when he crashed into an s.u.v. the 22-year-old from norton he was a football player at bridgewater state. childhood friends are remembering the young man they knew so well. >> he always had a smile on his face. he was always having fun. i couldn't say anything bad if i tried. i feel horrible for his family at a time like this. antoinette: the other driver, a woman from barnstable, was taken to rhode island hospital with serious injuries. doug: big additions to president-elect donald trump's inner circle, the team announcing two more names to his

house counsel. he'll help separate trump's duties as president from his global business, trump telling the "new york times" he can do both add once. trump naming k.t. mcfarland as his deputy national security advisor, serving as a former aide to henry kissinger. those appointments come amid internal trump team division, the sides split between mitt romney and rudy giuliani as secretary of state. giuliani saying he wouldn't discuss the selection. jill stein getting her wish, a recount in wisconsin. the green party candidate made the request after raising more than $5 million. her campaign says it plans to file for recounts in pennsylvania and michigan as well. the deadline to file in pennsylvania is monday. hillary clinton is behind in those three states by a combined 103,000 votes. antoinette: revealing new details about several red flags that were ignored, all of them centered around that driver who

antoinette: it's lingering. kelly ann: it's making things look ominous heading out this morning. it's rough to get out this morning. we're keeping an eye on things for you. doug: very mossy. kelly ann: here's a look at what we're seeing as far as travel impacts. first off this morning, you're waking up. the rain not so much an issue, but the fog is making some travel impacts through much of our region. right now, we're seeing visibility reduced significantly, especially as we move toward our north. that is going coastal showers as we head into the late morning to afternoon. clouds linger. medium travel impacts. notice how the showers start to recede as we move into the afternoon and evening. just expecting a few spotty sprinkles at most. and so your travel impacts for later today not looking to be quite as strong. here's a look at the visibility, and this is directly impacted by the fog we're seeing out there this morning. although worcester, the fog isn't quite as much of an issue,

mile. that's the case in downtown boston right now. and especially if you're heading out toward the new hampshire sea koes coast and merrimack valley, that's where a dense fog advisory has been issued for this morning. we have clouds stuck overhead. showers not as prevalent. we do have a few spotty showers trying to move onto the cape and islands. notice how it's just barely tracking by to the east. we're mainly missing out on that, waiting on wha west in the pipeline. temperatures right now mainly in the 30's. we have downtown boston at 39 degrees. we have fallen a degree or two within the last hour. we'll likely start to get into the 40's this afternoon. but we're holding onto those 30's for some of our western locations. pittsfield this morning is at 31 degrees. this afternoon, likely topping out at 39 degrees. moving into boston, 48. as we move onto the cape and islands, upper 40's to near 50

south. that's where the shower chances are going to be a bit more prevalent, because of the track of the storm system moving through. it's mainly down to our south and east. it's moving out into the atlantic. so right along the coastline, the cape and islands, that's where the shower chances will be strongest today. even there, though, it's going to be a light rainfall as it tracks on through. we're watching that through this evening. notice how drier air is starting to filter in as we move into the forecast overnight and into your sunday. breezy conditions expected tomorrow, but that sunshine breaking through. chances of snow just outside of our area. we'll likely be missing out on that locally. your seven-day forecast, we're starting off cool this weekend, but we see that sun break out tomorrow and things are looking up for next week. that's as we see that jet stream starting to push northward. that's going to allow warmer air to push back into the area. and that is why as we move into tuesday and wednesday, showers are moving in, but those temperatures are climbing.

antoinette, with temperatures well into the 50's. antoinette: we'll take it! time right now is 6:17. other stories we're tracking right now on the eye -- state lawmakers with a special request for jetblue. sfwld this one's over noise complaints. members of the state's congressional delegation ago jetblue to install the airlines' older planes with noise reducing equipment making their descent into logan quieter. jetblue says it will respond to the request after a other major airlines have already made necessary changes. antoinette: a warning for patients of a massachusetts hospital. personal information of more than 1700 patients at berkshire medical center have been compromised. the information was on a thumb drive found and recovered from a former employee of an outside service vendor. that vendor based in delaware says there's no indication the personal data was misused. the information did not include social security numbers or any insurance information.

this is the scene every day at st. boniface hospital two months since hurricane matthew. >> most of the time we have over 500 patients in our waiting room. erika: the doctor updating us from the only fully functioning hospital in the hardest hit southern peninsula. the storm tore apart haiti's fragile water systems. >> you go to a village and they just have rain water. >> people hear haiti and disaster and have heard it before. reporter: connor lived in haiti through the 2007 earthquake. he implores people to pay attention saying the tragedies are similar in scope. >> the same people were affected, 1.5 million people severely affected by the hurricane.

raul castro making the announcement on cuban tv from his office. he will be cremated this morning. his funeral will be sunday, december 4, followed by a period of public mourning. fidel castro born in cuba but fled to mexico as a young man only to return in 1956. he led a guerrilla war to take over the country. castro promised democracy but went on to rule cuba for nearly 50 years as a socialist. that's something he never made an apology for. interview with abc news. >> i am not afraid of saying i am a communist. i am honored to be a communist and i hope i will be till the last breath. doug: castro temporarily handed over powers to his younger brother raul as he battled health problems. he officially resigned in 2008. antoinette: news of castro's

reporter: 34-year-old vincent weaks of dorchester showing little reaction during his arraignment for injuring four boston police officers with a car. >> he ran over four cops. >> all right. reporter: the incident happened early wednesday morning on stoughton street in dorchester. police were responding to a call about a person with a gun. weaks was behind the wheel of a car matching the description. officers approached, ordered him out. he allegedly refuses and reaches for the shifter to put the car in drive. officers reach for the shifter too and the keys. >> the officers were reaching in the car. reporter: weaks allegedly drives into two other officers while he's escaping. all four officers are recovering from minor injuries. weaks' attorney argues police have the wrong man. >> his girlfriend is present. she indicates he was at home when the incident allegedly occurred. so it could not be him.

case, some of the strongest evidence comes from weaks' own sister, who heard about what happened here on stoughton street early wednesday morning, and she went to police telling detectives she rented the car involved and she rented it for him. weaks is held on $75,000 cash bail for this case and being held without bail pending a hearing regarding alleged probation violations for prior convictions on drug and assault todd kazakiewich, wcvb, newscenter 5. doug: todd, thank you. another case of a car being used to assault a boston police officer. this happened at around 3:00 yesterday. officers were called to the report of a domestic disturbance on julian street in dorchester. police say a man was in that car talking to a woman standing on the outside. when officers walked toward the car, police say the man put it into gear and then took off. one of those officers was struck rolling onto the hood. the suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested

the officer was taken to the hospital to get checked out. he's since been released. >> you can't ignore it. we will not let you build this pipeline. doug: standing in solidarity with standing rock, prosecutors -- protestors chained themselves to the entrance to downtown crossing td bank yesterday demanding the bank pull their investment in the dakota access pipeline. td bank is a primary lender for that proct hundreds of demonstrators have been facing off with police in north dakota. three were arrested at a rally in boston. antoinette: the u.s. army corps of engineers plans to take action to close the makeshift campground for the protestors by december 5 according to a letter sent to the leader of the standing rock sioux tribe.

reporter: pugliese played a critical role in the watertown shootout. he came face to face with tamerlan tsarnaev. >> we were exchanging gunfire. and, you know, he misses me and i'm hitting him. and it's afterwards, you go back and look at that house, and you see all the bullet holes. reporter: pugliese says the filmmakers got the watertown scene right. it was explosive and violent. he says other events were also depicted faithfully, the showdown in the boat to the joint f.b.i. investigation and the bombing itself. was it hard to watch all that again? >> it was. honestly, it brought back a lot of emotion. reporter: boston police commissioner is also giving the film high marks for respect and sensitivity. >> throughout the whole process, they were concerned how it would play out. >> every inch of this city is getting searched. we're shutting it down. reporter: mary saladna, wcvb newscenter 5.

we've learned his funeral will be sunday, december 4, followed by a period of public mourning. fidel castro has been in poor health for years. he was 90 years old. continuing coverage all morning long for you here on the eyeopener. right now, costa rica is rebounding from tropical storm otto. at least four people were killed by that storm. it brought torrential rains and powerful winds after making landfall. when it was a hurricane, otto was the southernmost hurricane on record to hit central america. at least six p antoinette: it's the question that everyone wants answered this time of year. how much snow are we going to get this winter? our weather guru, judah cohen, already sees the signals for severe weather. cohen is the director of seasonal forecasting at the atmospheric and environmental research in lexington. by studying the snow cover in siberia among other factors, he estimates we'll see 75 inches in boston this season.

normal. cohen says climate change could be a factor. >> the warm arctic decreases the ice, but also makes more moisture available, and we get these snow blitzes across siberia. that's where we get these more severe winter weather episodes. i think it's all connected. antoinette: hear that, doug? snow blitz. doug: i heard it. i don't want to hear it. antoinette: it's not just the snow. he says we could also see outbreaks of those severe cold snaps like remember when we set a record with 9 below in boston doug: it gives me a chill just looking at it. i know it's coming. antoinette: we always know it. kelly ann: right around the corner. doug: doesn't make it easier. kelly ann: it makes the temperatures nice and balmy. break out the shades. we aren't seeing much in the way of rainfall just yet this morning, but we're watching a lot of fog out there. that's making travel troublesome for the early morning hours.

boston. there's not much to see, because the visibility is significantly reduced by some of that dense fog that has developed. most of us sitting in the upper 30's to lower 40's. downtown boston at 39 degrees. winds are nice and light. that's not so much the concern. it's this fog which is in place. enough so that we're seeing visibility below 1/4 of a mile. that's especially problematic toward north shore, the new hampshire sea coast where there's a dense fog advisory in effect valley and up through maine. travel especially in northern new england along the coastline is looking rather troublesome for this morning. it's not until later this morning after that sun rises between 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. we'll see some of that fog give way to a cloudy sky through much of the forecast today. and there's those clouds moving in from the west. they've been in place for much of the forecast overnight and yesterday as well. that's going to keep us under a gray sky today. nothing much in the way of

nantucket and the cape and islands will see the best chance of rain throughout much of the forecast today because of the track of those showers. as we move into the late morning, notice how there is a batch of rain moving into western massachusetts. that's going to be approaching some areas of vermont, new hampshire as well as that follows that easterly track. this is not something most of us will see, patchy drizzle. a lot of the rain will stay confined toward the cape and islands as we head into the afternoon forecast. so if you're heading out today, don't be surprised if you miss out on that rainfall. we'll hold on to the clouds region wide. that's the case as we move into the east. shower chances mainly along the coastline still. overnight, we're drying out, eventually going to clear out. we have high pressure moving in from the west. the sun starts to break out as

morning. and eventually we're talking about a warm-up as we head into next week. not so much the case today. we have temperatures topping out in the 40's. 39 degrees for pittsfield for the afternoon high. boston at 48. marshfield at 44. a few upper 40's as you head out toward the cape and really through many of our southern extents. seven-day forecast, we're drying out heading into your sunday with that sun breaking out. brighter conditions for monday. hinting at a warming trend for the rest of the week. but with the warmer seeing a price to pay, and that's some showers heading our way. we have a storm system that's moving up the coast, bringing those showers into the area, and so that's going to stick around through much of the forecast next week. good news is, though, because of those showers in place, temperatures will be significantly warmer as we're kicking off the month of december. we're crossing over from the 40's into the 50's. in fact, a 54-degree high as we head into thursday. keep in mind with those warmer temperatures during the day,
