and the home as relatives make that the story. diane: police are working on a timeline trying to find out how the woman died and how long her children have been in the apartment alone before her body was discovered. officers rushed to the apartment for a possible home invasion this afternoon. after they started investigating, they realized it was not an intruder but rather concerned relatives who forced the door open when they had not heard from the mother ling deceased in the apartment. diane: it is not clear how the woman died. >> we are not sure if it is a natural death or some trauma. it could be a medical condition. diane: the woman part three young children were also in the apartment when the body was discovered. >> it is unfortunate. these children have been taken to the hospital. we are waiting to further examine the body. diane: police said the children

diane cho, wcvb newscenter 5. reid: the world continues to react to the death of former cuban president fidel castro. these images of people filling the streets are from daylong celebrations in miami's little havana. castro was 90 years old. nichole: one of the longest-serving heads of state, the controversial leader ruled the communist island with an iron grip for decades. celebrations in miami hours after the stunning announcement of fidel castro's death at 90. he was born on august 13, 1926 in oreinte province, cuba. as a child he was educated at private catholic schools and later went on to study law at the university of havana. castro became an activist for the poor and promised democracy but went on to rule cuba for more than 40 years with an iron fist. >> i'm not afraid to say i am a convinced communist. i feel honored to be a communist and i hope i will be to the last breath.

the u.s. retaliated by breaking off diplomatic relations with cuba and imposing a trade embargo. in 1961 president john f kennedy approved a cia invasion force of 1300 cuban exiles who went ashore at the bay of pigs. castro was able to fend off the invasion. in 1962 american spy planes discovered he had allowed the soviets to put nuclear missles in cuba. >> i have directed the armed forces to prepare for any eventualities. nichole: moved in and the soviets backed down in exchange for a pledge that america would not attack cuba. the soviet sytle economy castro promoted eventually produced dissent. in 1980, thousands of cubans braved rough seas and dehydration to reach america in the mariel boatlift. in 2006 castro temporarily handed over some of his powers to his younger brother raul as he battled health problems, but he never returned to power.

offering his condolences to the castro family. in a statement, the president saying -- president-elect donald trump calling castro a brutal dictator. he says his administration will do all it can to ensure the cuban people can finally begin their journey toward prosperity and liberty. reid: in miami, there have been celebrations in the streets since the announcement of castro's death. members of florida's cuban-american community say legacy is not romanticized. >> a man who separated so many families throughout the years, a man who killed many, who imprisoned many individuals just for thinking different a. >> the legacy is one of destruction of the economy, the destruction of the population morally, socially, and

teacher killed in a stabbing rampage in taunton. wife rosemary organized a -- george heath's wife rosemary organized a scholarship fundraiser in his name at the bertucci's where the attack happened back in may. the george heath superhero scholarship will go to a student at greater new bedford vocational-technical high school where heath worked. ,>> any student has gone above and beyond themselves, to help someone else come community, churches, we will pick the when her at the end of the year. they are doing something better, something beyond them. i want this to benefit the student. reid: george heath was killed after he came to the aid of a pregnant waitress during the attack. an off-duty sheriff's deputy shot and killed the man responsible. nichole: tonight, one of the six victims in that devastating bus crash in tennessee laid to rest. her friends taking to the stage

choir. they sang her favorite songs. bus driver johnthony walker was speeding when he crashed the bus, killing six children earlier this week. the 24-year-old faces several charges of vehicular homicide. three dogs pulled from a house fire in florida saved by the quick action of firefighters. the dogs were lifeless when firefighters rescued them and gave them some oxygen. they were all suffering from smoke inhalation. look at this. a dozen firefighters surrounded and giving them water. >> they are doing a very good job. i think them for doing that because without them, the dogs would be dead. nichole: no one was home at the time of that fire. investigators are working to find the cause. reid: we've lost a couple of degrees. it is 38 degrees. a chilly night, a great day. a little bit wet today. we could have frost on the windshield.
