rain showers head our way today followed by a late week warm up. i'll break it down for you in my first alert forecast. this is wdbj-7. i'm kimberly mcbroom. we begin with a developing story this afternoon. a shooting has been reported at the naval medical center in san diego, california. according to the center's facebook page. the post says a shooter has been reported in one of the buildings and all people inside are advised to "run hide or fight" the naval medical center has eight clinics for active duty personnel and nine primary care sites for their family members. we'll bring you more information about this situation as we get it on our website, wdbj7.com one person is out of their house, after it caught fire this morning in southeast roanoke. firefighters responded to the flames in the 35- hundred block of ventnor road around 7-15 this morning. thick black smoke poured out of the roof and the front of the house. crews were able to get the fire under control a short time after they arrived. firefighters worked

morning and then cleared the scene. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. the virginia house gop is rolling out its education agenda. the plans were announced at a news conference in richmond this morning. the house gop speaker william j. howell says he supports a "major amendment" to the virginia constitution aimed at promoting charter schools. republicans have previously supported legislation that would provide greater funding and state support for charter schools. democratic lawmakers say the measure could hurt traditional public schools. deputies just outside of richmond are looking for a suspect they say kidnapped his former mother-in law. the amelia county sheriff's office says olene brooks was taken from her home on thursday. her husband was killed after the suspect apparently broke into their home. other people in the home were zip- tied, duct-taped, and held hostage at gun point for hours, before the suspect took off with brooks. authorities say the suspect is dana william. he is considered dangerous, and most likely has a gun. he was last seen driving a 2010 silver dodge caravan with

"you didn't have to attacked years ago, but with the shootings and the robberies and

respect for life." the sheriff's office recommended that employees who chose to carry take a class on how to use their weapon properly. also during that meeting, carl boggess was named new county administrator and patrick skelley as the county attorney. a local nonprofit says part of our area is on the verge of an affordable housing crisis. rush homes recieved about 430 thousand dollars to help build an affordable housing complex in the lynchburg area. the proposed complex, old forest village, will have 24 apartments. they say the money is a huge piece to get this project going... but it's only a drop in the bucket to fix the larger issue. 540 people are on their waiting list for they focus primarily on the lynchburg area, but say the wide. chris howell, rush homes program manager "it's not just the poor. lower middle class that are having to pay out so much of their income towards rent and utilities. reports, the iranian leader is trying to make his country more visible after a recent nuclear deal . the meeting between pope francis and iranian president hassan rouhani began with a handshake...
