power spokesperson teresa hall. we know at the highest 45 thousand apco customers in virginia were without power. how many tonight are still without electricity? teresa hall/appalachian power spokesperson: around 5,000 customers are still without service in roanoke county and the city of roanoke. franklin county has about 1,000 customers without service. bedford, botetourt, campbell, and patrick counties each have fewer than 600 customers still without service. jean: we've noticed in some neighborhoods one house has power, the next does not. some people are wondering how is it power but i don't?

and found himself hanging upside down. it happened last week while fighting a fire. he spoke with wdbj7's amanda kenney about what saved his life. jean, chris, robert mauck treated last week's fire call just like any other. he said he went through all the normal precautions, but couldn't avoid falling. now, he's crediting his training for saving his life. (inaudible) mayday! mayday! mayday! it's a call you never want to hear. active mayday on the fire ground, a firefighter fallen through the floor. but it happened to one roanoke county firefighter last week while. robert mauck :i fell through the second floor, through the first floor, and ended up hanging upside down from the basement ceiling. randy spence: hearing it, for me, when i heard it it was very sickening feeling, because you know what's going on and you know the potential while the potential was there, fireffighter robert mauck walked away without serious injury. my mind never really had time to think. i

on just the training that we're given and the training truly paid off in this instance. mauck says he knew exactly what to do. first, check his air pack and mask then activate his emergency device but he couldn't reach it. so next, he got on his radio. i've fallen through the floor, i'm in the basement, i'm okay i could not see any fire, i didn't feel any fire coming down on me and i decided the best thing for me to do at that point was to get my own self out minutes later the rapid intervention crew came to his rescue. mauck says he got out alive, because of training. by no means do i know everything, i have a firm belief that the day that i stop training should be the last day that i'm on the job, because i'm going to hurt myself or someone else and the training will continue for all these firefighers. we'll look at that, what went right, what was in order, what we can improve on. you can always improve on everything looking back, mauck says he feels humbled. humbling in the aspect that it works,

new incentives for entrepreneurs to locate in the heart of town. once the commercial center of bedford, many storefronts along main and bridge streets now sit empty. jim messier/business owner: "it's been a little discouraging." says jim messier, who owns one of the town's oldest and most established businesses. he's also the board president of bedford main street, an organization that's trying to attract new merchants to the downtown area. messier: "we have a lot of programs and projects now that are geared toward getting business people and entrepreneurs educated on how to do business." those projects are getting funding from the state. the virginia main street program is giving bedford 20- thousand dollars. bedford main street will use the money to offer zero-interest loans to people who want to operate or expand a business downtown. charles kolakowski/town manager: "we're hoping it will encourage property owners and business owners to invest in their businesses and properties." matching amounts will come from the town and county,
