they are attacking localized problems that affect fewer customers. patrick henry high school was closed today because of the power outage in the raleigh court neighborhood. so was woodrow wilson middle school. neighbors who lost their power early tuesday morning were thrilled to see the trucks arrive to begin making repairs. carol furlong/roanoke resident: i was so happy. i went over and i took their pictures and talked to them for a while and tried to get an estimated time for when it's coming back on. and what did they tell you? they wouldn't. he said you're not going to make a liar out of me. laughter. craig furlong-turner: it was really nice, i was happy, because i can finally get my phone charged now, once the power goes back on. we believe the power is back on there. and tonight we understand the power outages affecting the schools have been repaired. we're told that all roanoke city and roanoke county schools will start on time tomorrow. live in roanoke joe dashiell wdbj7.

power spokesperson teresa hall. we know at the highest 45 thousand apco customers in virginia were without power. how many tonight are still without electricity? teresa hall/appalachian power spokesperson: around 5,000 customers are still without service in roanoke county and the city of roanoke. franklin county has about 1,000 customers without service. bedford, botetourt, campbell, and patrick counties each have fewer than 600 customers still without service. jean: we've noticed in some neighborhoods one house has power, the next does not. some people are wondering how is it power but i don't?

expect service to be back on for customers? teresa: in most areas, including bedford, botetourt, campbell and patrick counties, we expect to have service restored by late tonight. in franklin and roanoke counties, including the city of roanoke, we expect customers to have power by late thursday night. in isolated instances, especially where damage is severe or access is difficult, restoration may extend beyond these estimates. jean: how many people are out there working? teresa: more than 650 workers are helping restore power, including around 500 line workers and support personnel and 150 tree contractors. thanks teresa hall, appalachian power spokesperson. new details about an early morning house fire in bedford county. investigators say it started in the garage from a heat lamp that was on to keep the owners cats warm. firefighters were

and found himself hanging upside down. it happened last week while fighting a fire. he spoke with wdbj7's amanda kenney about what saved his life. jean, chris, robert mauck treated last week's fire call just like any other. he said he went through all the normal precautions, but couldn't avoid falling. now, he's crediting his training for saving his life. (inaudible) mayday! mayday! mayday! it's a call you never want to hear. active mayday on the fire ground, a firefighter fallen through the floor. but it happened to one roanoke county firefighter last week while. robert mauck :i fell through the second floor, through the first floor, and ended up hanging upside down from the basement ceiling. randy spence: hearing it, for me, when i heard it it was very sickening feeling, because you know what's going on and you know the potential while the potential was there, fireffighter robert mauck walked away without serious injury. my mind never really had time to think. i

on just the training that we're given and the training truly paid off in this instance. mauck says he knew exactly what to do. first, check his air pack and mask then activate his emergency device but he couldn't reach it. so next, he got on his radio. i've fallen through the floor, i'm in the basement, i'm okay i could not see any fire, i didn't feel any fire coming down on me and i decided the best thing for me to do at that point was to get my own self out minutes later the rapid intervention crew came to his rescue. mauck says he got out alive, because of training. by no means do i know everything, i have a firm belief that the day that i stop training should be the last day that i'm on the job, because i'm going to hurt myself or someone else and the training will continue for all these firefighers. we'll look at that, what went right, what was in order, what we can improve on. you can always improve on everything looking back, mauck says he feels humbled. humbling in the aspect that it works,

has paid off the mayday has been canceled for operations, the firefighter delcaring the mayday and the ric team are out of the building. mauck has been fighting fires since 2003. but there's a chance that could have been his last one. jean, muack has been promoted to a deputy fire marshal with roanoke county. his first day is february 29th. now at six - an update on the adam ward memorial scholarship. proceeds from the "salem strong" t- shirts have raised more than 5 thousand dollars for the fund. grant smythers, who is the driving force behind the shirts, presented the check to the salem educational foundation scholarship in adam's name. smythers is also one of adam's former teachers at salem high school. the total amount for the scholarship is near 80 thousand dollars. you can find information about how to donate to the scholarship on our website.

of wdbj7's alison parker. the for alison foundation is setup in her honor in the performing and visual arts. you can find more information about that at for-alison- dot-org. the boys and girls club in danville will soon have a new gym floor thanks for the danville lions club. that organization along with the danville community foundation announced a large capital improvement grant to repair the gym and the roof. the community foundation says working with donors to be able to help area youth makes it all worth while. debra dodson, the community foundation of the dan river region, executive director , "who are all trying to pull their resources to give back. to help this community get stronger. and not just for this generation but for generations and generations." the danville community foundation provides 43 different scholarships opportunities students yearly . in 2016-2017, a new scholarship will be aviable for students going into the health field. for more information go to wdbj7 dot com new at six - how a new grant

store unique. storefronts in downtown bedford are getting a boost from leaders in richmond. bedford officials just found out yesterday they'll be getting 20- thousand dollars from the virginia main street program. wdbj7's tim saunders is live in our lynchburg bedford newsroom. tim, how will the money be used? it will be put toward a loan program, chris.

new incentives for entrepreneurs to locate in the heart of town. once the commercial center of bedford, many storefronts along main and bridge streets now sit empty. jim messier/business owner: "it's been a little discouraging." says jim messier, who owns one of the town's oldest and most established businesses. he's also the board president of bedford main street, an organization that's trying to attract new merchants to the downtown area. messier: "we have a lot of programs and projects now that are geared toward getting business people and entrepreneurs educated on how to do business." those projects are getting funding from the state. the virginia main street program is giving bedford 20- thousand dollars. bedford main street will use the money to offer zero-interest loans to people who want to operate or expand a business downtown. charles kolakowski/town manager: "we're hoping it will encourage property owners and business owners to invest in their businesses and properties." matching amounts will come from the town and county,

the program to around 40-thousand. bedford main street board members, most of which own businesses themselves, hope the effort will go a long way toward making their town a destination. linda kuczmarski/business owner: "we can fill bedford up again and have a nice town, where people can come here, park their cars, and stay for the day." messier: "ultimately what we're looking for is a downtown with 100 percent capacity, beautiful buildings, and thousands of people coming to shop." bedford isn't the only town getting money. virginia main street awarded grants totaling 150- thousand dollars yesterday to 10 different communities. altavista is getting 10-thousand to renovate some of its buildings. live in the lynchburg bedford newsroom, tim saunders, wdbj7. downtown roanoke is getting another store to bring in shoppers. shabby love opens this saturday and sits on market street. it's restoration hardware meets the farm but everything here is one-of-a-kind. many of the items you see are older pieces that people no longer wanted.

great it is right here without coming here and experiencing it and getting to see it all in person, it's just really hard to explain but anyone who comes here i think, will be blown away. we've got some good college hoops match-ups tonight, starting with lynchburg college and roanoke college playing for what could be the second-seed in next week's odac tournament. this is the second-to-last game of the regular season for both the hornets and the maroons, who are meeting for the first time this season. roanoke is 11 and 3 in conference play while lynchburg is 10 and 4 in the in the acc tonight, the road at 11th- won the last 4 meetings with the hokies. also tonight, duke- carolina in the tobacco road rivalry.
