battling this fire. melissa gaona. and i'm chris hurst. first tonight - a drop in the number of power outages across our region. appalachian power's outage map shows roughly 35-hundred people are in the dark and cold. roanoke city still has the highest number right now, at 11-hundred. more than 650 people have been working around the clock to get the power back on. appalachian power hopes to have power completely restored

start to climb the ladder saturday sunday gets beautiful we have weather has taken its toll on the food supply at some local shelters. one of them is the salvation army. wdbj7's noell saunders tells us what you can to to change that. the salvation army is always in need of volunteers and food. this time, their food pantry is running low because of monday's storm. officials are asking for your help. "i think we all rely on the community support that we recieve. it's vital to our operation" the salvation army feeds over 100 people a day. many of them are women and children from the domestic violence shelter turning point. social services director jamie starkey says the biggest need comes when children aren't in the classroom. "we depend on the school to provide for children when they are in school so when the children are out of school for s snow day that causes an increased need for food supply here" starkey says weather has played a big role in fewer donations this year. also, the salvation army's red kettle

do well last year. that's their number one source of funding. "the money that comes from the red kettle campaign. we depend on it to set our operating budget for the year" pasta, canned goods, snacks are among the food items needed. "we haven't seen the dire circumstance of feeling like we are not going to be able to feed people but certainly it is a blessing to us when the community comes forward to help us supplement that food supply" we have information on how to donate to the salvation army on wdbj7.com noell saunders wdbj7. a 90-year-old man and his dog are out of their home tonight after a fire in craig county, not far from the west virginia state line. according to a volunteer assitant chief, the house on dick's creek road is a total loss. when firefighters got there this evening, the walls and roof had already caved. they think the fire started in the kitchen.

to be checked out. a roanoke county firefigther says training saved his life last week. nats "activate mayday on the fire ground, a firefighter fallen through the floor" while fighting a fire last week on green hill drive, firefighter and paramedic robert mauck fell through two floors and was hanging upside down. after following standard prodecures from his training, mauck says he was able to set himself free. minutes later, a crew came to the rescue. roanoke county firefighter and paramedic robert mauck: "i just looked up to the sky and i just thank god for letting me make it. i'm a human being like i said, it's wonderful thing, i'm a blessed man." mauck only suffered some bruising. soon though, he'll no longer be fighting fires. in two-weeks he starts his new job as roanoke county deputy fire marshal. a big change on campus at the university of texas at austin: guns will be allowed in classrooms starting next school year. the school's president approved the guidelines today.

texas law. those with concealed handgun licenses will be able to bring their weapons to class. school leaders don't necessarily agree with the policy, but state law requires public universities to allow guns starting in august. a mass shooting at the school in 1966 killed 14 people and wounded 32. while apple's ceo says a judge's order could threaten the security of millions of iphones, the white house doesn't see it that way. the judge ordered apple to help the fbi hack into an iphone used by one of the shooters in san bernardino last year. the white house says the order would quote "have an impact on this one device." leaders say the case adding to the debate about privacy versus security, and it could be headed to the supreme court. alan cohn/fmr. asst. sec. of the dep. of homeland security: "right now, both parties have dug in and both parties have an incentive to bring this case forward." apple has five days to appeal the judge's ruling. ahead of saturday's south carolina's

nikki haley says she's endorsing republican presidential candidate marco rubio. the support could help rubio, who's been targetted in recent political attacks from jeb bush and ted cruz. hillary clinton's campaign has launched tv ads in virginia, ahead of the march 1st primary. right now, they're running in the richmond market. clinton is enjoying a lead in virginia polls against opponent bernie sanders. but in saturday's caucuses in nevada, it's a dead heat between the two democratic candidates. a group of giles county landowners against the mountain valley pipeline project has taken its case to the virginia supreme court. justices heard an appeal by the appalachian mountain advocates yesterday. that group is questioning a law that lets pipeline surveyors on their property under eminent domain. they previously prevented mountain valley pipeline from entering private property in west virginia. justices could rule on the case in a month to six weeks.

organization in lexington are trying to keep our kids active by giving them more space to play sports. w-d-b-j-7's khiree stewart tells us about a project they're planning and what a difference it will make. chris, hundreds of kids and teenagers play sports through the rockbridge area recreation organization. leaders say they need more places for their teams to practice and hope a new project solves that problem. "you look at other facilities and you say 'why don't we have that here?'" members of the rockbridge area recreation organization are a step closer to making it happen. executive director john trudgeon a limited amount of space to practice,. they're planning to extend their practice fields at the brewbaker field complex on this 2 "there will be a there will be baseball practices practices in the spring time, soccer practices in the fall. probably even some football practices as well." on top of that, he says they'll also construct a chain link fence around the project will cost around 180-

aside from grants, 50-thousand will come from the city of lexington and rockbridge county through their capital improvements plan. they're planning to start a fundraising campaign later this year. "there are more interest in using facilities then there are to use. so, there's been a lot of cooperation." right now, he says they're in the process of getting the city to accept their plan. trudgeon hopes it's a home run the local athletes. an infrastructure study to see if any of the pipes needed to be removed. the governor refused to speculate on a timeline for his plan, but the mayor says she's moving forward with her pipe removal plans. maryland is appealing a ruling that allows dominion virginia power to drain 215-million gallons of treated water from coal ash ponds just south of washington dc into a creek that flows into the potomac river. maryland's governor wants a judge in richmond to review the approval virginia granted last month. dominion's plan is part of a larger effort to comply with a nationwide environmental protection agency mandate to safely dispose of coal ash. dominion says the groundwater will be monitored. new tonight, rock and roll band phish will be headlining this year's lock'n music festival in nelson county. organizers made the announcement today. included in the musical lineup are the bands "my morning jacket" and "ween." the lock'n festival takes place august 25th through 28th. general admission and v-i-p tickets,

on sale this friday at noon. the mill mountain zoo says it's thankful the winter storm happened while the zoo is closed for its winter schedule, but the animals still need around the clock care. parts of the zoo lost power. service has been completely restored as staff prepares to reopen on friday. while kids enjoyed another snow day today, staff and volunteers in grayson county took advantage of the empty schools. during snow days the schools renovate and touch up parts of the building like locker rooms, bathrooms, and hallways. they even have inmates from the regional jail come in to help. superintendent kelly wilmore says the work is well worth it when he considers how it will help the school. (kelly wilmore, grayson county schools superintendent) you need to make sure your school looks nice and it needs to look nice for the kids and we have great kids here so they deserve a very nice school. it doesn't take a whole lot to make a place look a whole lot better, paint and lights are a huge effort. students head back to school tomorrow,

daytona international speedway is undeniable, but the track has taken a huge step into the future with a huge renovation project. here's travis wells with more on the first motorsports stadium. the track eliminated 40 thousand backstretch seats and replaced more than 101 thousand seats on the frontstretch with new wider, more comfortable ones with nearly perfect sight lines. getting into the facility is easier with more than 40 escalators at 5 different injectors, a fancy word for oversized gates. appropriately for nascar, each injector is sponsored and leads to a huge concourse with interactive breezeways. there is wifi throughout along with 14 hundred hd tv monitors that span the stands, which are nearly a mile long. joie chitwood/ daytona international speedway president: that marquee sign and that facade when you get off that exit at isb and you drive down and see the daytona international speedway now, i think it catches
