be allowed to go home through the weekend if they'd like. the president says they've never faced a situtation like this before. christian heilman, wdbj7. there will also be an increased police presence tomorrow at northside high school in roanoke county. this comes after a post threatening possible violence at the school began circulating on social media. school leaders say classes continued as usual because they weren't sure about the credibility of the threat. the f-b-i has searched the home of the brother of one of the san bernardino shooters today. a spokesperson confirmed the search was part of the investigation but did not go into further detail. no one was arrested. syed farook and tashfeen malik killed 14 people at a holiday party in san bernardino back in december. both were later shot and killed by police. google says it's supporting apple in its encryption battle with the f-b-i over a phone belonging to one of the shooters. federal investigators are locked out of syed

says apple is right to defy a judge's order to help unlock it. apple says its customer base wants unbreakable encryption, not a company that hands over customers' private information. a judge ordered apple to disable the iphone's auto erase feature, which wipes out the phone's data if the wrong passcode is entered 10 times. apple's ceo says developing technology to do that would create a "backdoor" to not just that iphone, but millions of devices. apple has until tuesday to appeal the judge's order. a man and woman are facing several charges tonight in christiansburg. an officer pulled over justin cumbee and jamie burton along north franklin street yesterday afternoon. evidence found in the vehicle led the officer to charge them with manufacturing and possessing a controlled substance. they were also charged with two counts of child abuse and neglect, because a four-year-old and two-year-old were with them. cumbee was also charged with dui and driving with a suspended license.

donald trump for president last month, but he says it's because of more than religion. jerry falwell jr. / liberty university president: "i do believe that trump is a christian, but that's not why i endorsed him. i endorsed him because believe he'll be the best president of the united states." he says he also based his choice on who would lead the u-s away from debt and restore our country's economic viability. falwell also said he's seen trump's generosity to others over the last few years. new tonight - a rand corporation study shows the military is struggling to provide adequate care for troops suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and the group found many are not getting of therapy sessions. some blame it on a professionals, and therapists who are available through pentagon contracts. leaders plan to examine the study and find ways to improve. low income veterans in southwest virginia can get free estate planning services from lawyers next

mark herring says this is the first time for the veterans legal services clinics. the only clinic in our region is on march 3rd at virginia western community college. veterans and their spouses have to fill out a questionnaire to participate. you can do that throughthe a-g's website or at a virginia department of veterans services benefits center. volvo in dublin says it will finish laying off about 600 employees tomorrow. the truck manufacturer started the cutbacks two weeks ago. organizations in pulaski county are now helping them find work. new river community college hosted a job fair today for those now laid off volvo workers. they're now qualified for the dislocated worker program through the regional workforce development board. at least 17 regional employers along with other services and programs were available. marty holliday/new river mount rogers workforce development board executive director: "usually when people get laid off they're used to a certain life style, they need certain things, they need health insurance. once their money runs out from their subpay they're going to need assistance so we tried to bring in some of the service providers that might

questions." volvo first said in december it would lay off about 730 employees. that number was recently reduced after company leaders said they can maintain the market adjustments. a bill to reduce the emphasis on standardized testing in high schools is moving through the general assembly. the measure requires virginia's board of education to stress critical thinking over standardized testing. the legislation sailed through the senate unanimously, and yesterday, it was approved by a house committee 19- to- 3. the bill also instructs education officials to emphasize internships and technical training. new tonight, it's out with the old and in with the new in lexington. school leaders are working to build a new elementary school on the site of an old one. w-d-b-j-7's khiree stewart tells us what parents and students can expect once the doors open. the 14 million dollar project began back in 2014. once waddell

complete, the more than 300 students will have a state of the art school. "oh i think it's fabulous. when my kids were at this school, it was obvious that it needed improvement." those improvements are coming in a big way at waddell elementary school in lexington. crews are building a new facility on the footprints of the original school, which opened in 1926. leslie straughan is a parent and member of the school board and says the original building is historic, but had issues. "had problems with our heating and cooling system. with computers, there's never enough outlets. we had required it for computer systems where we didn't have enough outlets. the classrooms were undersized by state standard." lexington city school superintendent scott jefferies says the new building will have a more efficient layout and updated technology. "they'll have the smartboards in their classrooms, we'll have computer labs, wireless access throughout the building and in terms of a brand new

it's going to be an instant upgrade." there will be 19 classrooms, a media center, and resource areas. it will also be community oriented. "we plan on having the gymnasium available for community activities. not only the student have a great facility, but they community have a good facility to use as well." right now, students are holding class at the nearby middle school while crews finish the building. when it's done, they hope it makes the grade with parents and students. video from hawaii of a tour helicopter crashing near the u-s-s arizona memorial at pearl harbor. were hurt, one critically. five people in all were on board. the man who shot this video said something didn't seem right, with the helicopter being as low as it was. other witnesses to the crash jumped into the water and helped pull the victims to shore. it's not clear yet what caused the helicopter to go down. day three of hearings into last year's sinking of the cargo ship el faro. today, a second mate on the ship testified before the coast guard panel. he said while on vacation, he texted the ship's captain, warning him that a

florida's coast was forecast to become a hurricane. he said the captain replied that he planed to go near, but south of what became hurricane joaquin. investigators want to know why he chose to sail closer to the storm when he chose safer and more evasive routes in previous storms. all 33 onboard died when el faro sank in october. officials in california say the massive well that leaked out natural gas in los angeles county since october has been permanently sealed. a gas company plugged the 60- year-old well with cement and ran several tests that showed no more gas was leaking. thousands of families were forced to leave their home for months. air quality checks will remain in place. the gas company faces criminal charges for failing to immediately report the leak to authorities. virginia tech is continuing efforts to help folks in flint, michigan get safe drinking water. tomorrow morning students and staff known as the flint water team, are putting together 300 water testing kits.

the same 271 homes the team tested back in august. that test shed light on how badly contaminated with lead flint's tap water is. it showed 13- hundred times the legal amount of lead in the water. new tonight, virginia taxpayers are having to pick up a food and drink tab for a luxury box at last month's washington redskins playoff game against the packers. the bill totals 24- hundred dollars, and most of the guests in the suite had no official public purpose. the richmond times dispatch reports that only four of the 15 attendees represented businesses considering expansion in virignia. governor mcauliffe's spokesman said the food and drinks were pre-ordered by officials who expected a larger crowd of business prospects. protestors used song and prayer to try to save two former slave homes in botetourt county today. the homes on the former greenfield plantation and are set to be moved next
