there were additional officers on campus yesterday as well. classes were not canceled because authorities couldn't verify the threats. a school in southside received a threatening message this week, supposedly from isis. hargrave military academy in chatham got the message on tuesday. hargrave touts itself as "america's premier military boarding school" primarily for seventh through 12th graders. the school's president says they immediately got in touch with local law enforcement after receiving the message. now, that investigation includes other state and federal agencies. yesterday, the school held assemblies with cadets and employees. they also sent a message to parents. other law enforcement have increased patrols on campus, too. there was an open house planned for this weekend -- but it's been cancelled. all 247 cadets will be allowed to go home through the weekend if they'd like. the president says they've never faced a situtation like this before. interstate 81 is back

county this morning after a tractor trailer accident yesterday. this is what i-81 looked like just after the accident happened, which was around 4:30. the tractor-trailer was carrying meat by-products when it overtuned across the roads. we're waiting to find out what exactly happened. drug bust in christiansburg. a man and woman are facing several charges. an officer pulled over justin cumbee and jamie burton along north franklin street wednesday afternoon. evidence found in the vehicle led the officer to charge them with manufacturing and possessing a controlled substance. they were also charged with two counts of child abuse and neglect, because a four-year-old and two-year-old were with them. cumbee was also charged with dui and driving with a suspended license. both are being held without bond. it's warming up this weekend. at least that's what leo has been saying all week. here he is with your forecast. yeah hold true today tomorrow

two suspects charged in connection to the blacksburg david eisenhauer and natalie keepers are charged in the case. montgomery county prosecutors say they will continue to consider whether the evidence could warrant a capital murder charge. volvo in dublin says it will finish laying off about 600 employees today. the truck manufacturer started the cutbacks two weeks ago. organizations in pulaski county are now helping them find work. new river community college hosted a job fair yesterday for those now laid off volvo workers. they're now qualified for the dislocated worker program through the regional workforce development board. at least 17 regional employers along with other services and programs were available. marty holliday/new river mount rogers workforce development board executive director: "usually when people get laid off they're used to a certain life style, they need certain things, they need health insurance. once their money runs out from their subpay they're going to need assistance so we tried to bring in some of the service providers that might

questions." volvo first said in december it would lay off about 730 employees. that number was recently reduced after company leaders said they can maintain the market adjustments. cell phone privacy has been in the news this week as the federal government has tried to force apple to make its devices more accessible for law enforcement investigations. virginia senator mark warner says government investigators need access to cell phone data to protect americans from threats. as the co-founder of cell phone company "nextel," warner says he also recognizes the importance of encryption technology. he's working with republican members of congress to form a committee of what he calls "experts," who can recommend a solution that satisfies concerns on both sides of the privacy debate. senator mark warner/(d) virginia: "there can be an answer, where we can both protect people's privacy and work with law

afternoon. quarles road in bedford county is closed right now because of flooding. you won't be able to drive there near nester road. gas work will affect traffic on colonial avenue in southwest roanoke. one lane will be closed between mcneal drive and overland road until march 22-nd. traffic control will help you get around in the meantime. virginia western students and staff are asked to follow the traffic advisory boards to get to the campus. bridge work could slow you down this morning in botetourt county. the northbound left lane of i-81 is blocked at mile marker 165, which is in between two of the route 11 exits. it should re-open in about 45 minutes.

lexington are working to finish the construction of a new building for waddell elementary school. the original building was constructed in 1926. parents said there were issues with the size of the classrooms, heating and cooling systems, and number of electrical outlets. the new building will have 19 classrooms, a media center, and resource areas. right now, students are holding class at the nearby middle school while crews finish construction. when it's complete, school leaders say the new building will be community oriented. scott jefferies: "it just kind of speaks to the importance of the elementary school to this area, to this city. there's great pride and heritage in this school. i think everyone in terms of families and our students are really excited to get into a new building." we're told the renovations should be completed this summer, and the school will open at the beginning of the school year. roanoke children's theater is bringing entertainment and awareness to the community. it's all part of the theater's r-c-t-4-

unique approach to connecting with young people about current health issues through theater. in the past depression, eating disorders and bullying were addressed. this year's production is called "the ice cream man." it focuses on young people and the issues many face with heroin and drug abuse. pat wilhelms/artistic director "1 in 14 roanoke valley high school students has tried heroin at least once that in and of itself is enough to have us grab everyone by the shoulders and let them know that this is a problem." the ice cream man runs march 10th- 13th. you can find more information on our website, wdbj7- dot-com. duke energy crews will soon close one of danville's parks for a 500 thousand dollar enhancment project. duke energy used the abreu- grogan park as a staging area during coal ash clean up. after that, the company offered to

improvements for recreational use. there will be a new dock, restrooms, fishing platform and sidewalks. danville parks and recreation leaders say this will be a very useful upgrade for a very busy park. bill sgrinia danville parks and recreation director "you can go approx four miles up stream on a nice comfortable paddle. it's a great place to just come and fish and with these improvements. it's really going to make it that much more accessible to everybody." the park will be closed feburary 29th and open back up memorial day weekend. danville parks and rec needs your help with another parks and rec project in the works--- with city funds from the yearly budget, the department will be renovating the skate park they want your input at a public meeting next thursday at 5:30 in the city auditorium it's been more than a year since parents in rocky mount have had their own pediatrician. coming up, how a new facility is changing that. and, protesters are still trying to convince leaders in botetourt

you of about roanoke to get care for their children. carilion children's opened the doors to a new pediatric clinic in rocky mount yesterday. the area has been without a pediatrician for more than year after dr. rene vamenta retired. the new clinic fills a gap that was needed in the community. dr. self: we want parents and patients to be able to get care in the communities in which they live. if we can also be a part of the community and understand some of the stressors that make it more difficult or more challenging for families when they're caring for their children. doctor self expects to see three- thousand patients as the clinic grows. song and prayer were used to try and save two former slave home in botetourt county yesterday. the homes on the former greenfield plantation and are set to be moved next week. they have been part of botetourt's history for about 200 years. a study this month looked at the land for unmarked graves, but officials say none were found. some, though, disagree. shirley lewis: "i don't care what the report says. nothing will convince me that there are not

basketball, virginia tech and uva both lose. that's your friday morning look at sports. some first responders in fairfax county are being hailed as heros after saving a dog named angel. she fell through thin ice on lake thoreau in reston on wednesday. the department posted this video of her rescue on its facebook page. the crew quickly threw on their ice commander suits and was able to rescue the dog less than 10-minutes after getting the call for help. angel was checked out after being pulled out of the lake and turned over to her owner, with no injuries. the late supreme court justice antonin scalia will be honored today in washington, dc. we'll tell you when, coming up after the break. plus one of donald trump biggest supporters is responding to the pope's comments about his faith. why jerry falwell, junior says his endorsement is about more than religion. amd witnesses talk about the moments before a helicopter crashes near the

hawaii. i'm garrett turner. kimberly mcbroom is off this morning. justice antonin scalia will lie in repose today at the supreme court, before his funeral tomorrow. after a private service, the public will be able to walk past his casket. president obama will pay his respects today, but will not be attending tomorrow's funeral. don champion is outside the supreme court with more on why the president's decision is raising questions. known as a conservative warrior- today, thousands will pay final respects to supreme court justice antonin scalia. president obama and the first lady will remember the justice as his body lies in repose in the great hall of the supreme court.

faced criticism from the right for not planning to attend scalia's funeral tomorrow. examine the study and find ways to improve. a bill to reduce the emphasis on standardized testing in high schools is moving through the general assembly. the measure requires virginia's board of education to stress critical thinking over standardized testing. the legislation sailed through the senate unanimously, and yesterday, it was approved by a house committee 19- to- 3. the bill also instructs education officials to emphasize internships and technical training. a pilot and a family of four were on board a tour helicopter when it crashed off the arizona memorial visitors center in hawaii. witnesses said they saw smoke coming from the helicopter's tail shortly before it went down. good samaritans who saw the crash jumped into the water and helped pull people to shore. a knife was needed to free one of the passengers from a seatbelt in the chopper. people say it was obvious something was wrong with the helicopter, and that it appeared the pilot was trying to guide it down into the water. daniel rose/eyewitness:
