nasa's top administrator takes a break from space work to talk to students at virginia tech. you'll hear what's next for the space program. sunny skies return for the weekend along with a major warmup. good evening i'm jean jadhon. students from liberty university are among the hundreds of volunteers who are helping the appmattox tornado victims with recovery and clean-up. wdbj7's tim saunders is live in evergreen. tim, what are the students doing out there this afternoon? they're assisting any way they can, jean. these students are part of a group called "l-u send" it's an organization that formed a few months ago to provide humanitarian relief in disaster zones around the world. they didn't realize one of their first assignments would be so close to home. more than 125 students have been sent here to do everything from roof repairs to clearing debris. their goal is to help with any immediate needs they might find. students say this experience is having a profound impact on their own lives. micah green/student: "i was honestly heartbroken to see

demolished, down to the ground, and familiy belongings and treasures just out on the grass. laying there. what used to be in their house." benjamin sisco/student: "our goal out here is not to point at us or bring any glory to us. it's to point back at the mission and show the love of christ." more than 13- hundred students are involved with the l-u send program and appomattox isn't the only place where they're serving right now. a group just got back from greece a few days ago. they were helping middle eastern refugees in that country. another team is headed to flint, michigan in a few days to help people who've been impacted by the water crisis. live in appomattox county, tim

also god's pit crew's tractor trailers full of supplies headed out all over the state to help storm victims. early this morning a team in danville left for tappahannock. crew members say the damage is worse there - than in appomattox. responding to natural disasters all over the nation, it's still the same hurt but you just never think it will happen in your backyard. james hodge, volunteer. "you know when you are helping people get pictures of their family out of the debris, it's just a wonderful feeling. " teams will be in tappahannock for three to four days. in appomattox, they will be staying overnight in a local church and will be back monday. crew members say appomattox is like home to them and they hope be back to spend time rebuilding homes.

gathered all across the evergreen community in appomattox tonight to help victim's of wednesday's tornado. wdbj7's noell saunders is there right now with more details. noell how is it looking? jean, today it's definitely a different tone then yesterday. it's a matter now of rebuilding this community and starting over. volunteers have been coming in and out of evergreen with food, clean up supplies and other items. but there's still a long way to go. (nats) volunteers have been coming to the thomasville furniture building since yesterday to sign up to donate and lend their services. lowes dropped off their second round of items. "we pulled a lot of stock out of our shelves and brought it here. brooms, we had left over snow shovels from the winter, packing boxes in case they had any belongings they

that's what we did" (nats) the devastation continues as many are trying to find their lives as they once knew it before the storm. some are still without supplies. volunteers are working around the clock to help those in need. help wherever we can so at right now. so we trying to get that first bit of information so we can respond again" a couple of things i want to recap that the county said earlier today a news conference all volunteers must report to the main parking lot at the thomasville furniture building. if you need shelter two of them are open. the appomattox community center and the pamplin fire department. there is no timeline when this will all be cleaned up but

cedric ford was served with a protection from abuse order in the factory where he worked in hesston, kansas, 90 minutes before he opened fire. sot: sheriff t. walton/harvey county he didn't display anything that was outrageous. he just displayed, he was a little upset that he was getting this order. ford, who had a criminal record, left work after getting the order, and first opened fire from his car, hitting someone in a vehicle. he then shot another driver and stole their car before heading back to the plant. ford shot one person in the parking lot and another 14 inside the building before an officer killed him. investigators are trying to figure out how a suspect with a criminal record was able to get the weapons he used. a big surprise for republican presidential candidates on the campaign trail today. donald trump has picked up an endorsement from former g-o-p candidate chris christie. last night trump faced off against the remaining republican contenders during a debate in texas. his top rivals, senators ted cruz and marco rubio wasted no time

they questioned whether trump could beat democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton. meanwhile clinton and senator bernie sanders are courting minority voters in south carolina ahead of the primary there tomorrow. with the presidential primary on tap for tuesday, a new roanoke college poll shows donald trump and hillary clinton with substantial leads in virginia. trump is way ahead of his republican rivals, with 38 percent of those surveyed supporting his campaign. 15 percent said they were likely to vote for ted cruz. 13 percent threw their support behind marco rubio. harry wilson/institute for policy & opinion research: i think the state of the race in virginia is that marco rubio and ted cruz are fighting it out for second place. it really looks like donald trump is going to carry virginia. on the democratic side, the roanoke college poll shows hillary clinton with 50 percent support. bernie sanders had 33 percent, and 17 percent were still undecided. nasa's leader predicts astronauts will land on mars

that's one of many projects charles bolden shared with students today at virginia tech. wdbj7's justin ward was there as he encouraged students to follow their dreams. if you had walked by the classroom, you may have just thought it was a professor teaching his class. nats "great question. the question is what do i want from you." until you heard charles bolden's experiences. nats "when the main engines cut off and you just start floating, you get this incredible feeling of fullness in your head." bolden, a retired marine corps major general, heads the entire nasa program and has been to space four times. he leads 18 thousand employees and uses a budget of 19 billion dollars to fund space exploration, science, aeronatics, and technology research. although he has many accolades and a high position, he stays humble - asking the students to call him charlie, and taking questions throughout his visit to virginia tech. virginia tech professor and poet nikki giovanni invited him to speak to the campus community in a classroom setting. charles bolden/nasa administrator: " i am a lifelong admirer of dr. nikki giovanni. i used to read her

he told students his biggest challenge is leading the program. he was nominated by president obama and confirmed by the senate in 2009. nasa has about 800 international partnerships. bolden says he plans to grow those relationships. charles bolden: "an important part of my job is actually getting out going to other countries and working with my international partners in trying to find out what role can they play in this journey to mars." he encouraged students to speak up, be bold, and not get discouraged. he's also a man of faith, and not afraid to admit it, referencing his christian beliefs several times during his time with the students. charles bolden: "i think if i walk away from my faith and my willingness to talk about it then i'm keeping a piece of me away from people. people need to know who i am fully." bolden says no training prepared him for what he encountered in space - he cried the first he say the earth from space. he says the view of earth from space never gets old. in blacksburg, justin
