tv CBS Overnight News CBS November 9, 2016 3:00am-4:00am CST
3:00 am
so you get the best sleep of your life. please call the number on your screen to order your very own my pillow. make sure you use the special tv promo-code, and mike will give you a second pillow absolutely free. i personally guarantee my pillow will be the most comfortable pillow you'll ever own. i've purchased at least half a dozen pillows in the last three years. nothing has really worked for me like the my pillow. the first night i got it, slept like a baby, my pillow changed my life because i am rejuvenated in the morning. when she had the my pillow she would, like, make us a really good breakfast. my pillow has been a godsend. it's the best pillow out there. hi, i'm terri traen. today we're talking about an everyday product that every single one of us uses: a pillow, but not just any pillow-- my pillow.
3:01 am
well, i know exactly the right person to answer that question for you. let me introduce you to mike lindell, inventor of my pillow. hi, mike. hello, terri. how you doing? i'm doing great, and you? good. good. i must say, mike, i never thought i would be standing here, talking to you about a pillow. i guess i just assumed that a pillow was a pillow was a pillow. terri, that's what everyone believes. we've been lied to all our lives by the pillow industry i don't wear the same size shoe or t-shirt as you, so why would we think one-size-fits-all would work for anyone? i had memory foams, i had feather pillows, and i'd always wake up with neck pain. after sleeping on my pillow, i didn't wake up with the headaches, i was more aligned, everything felt good. before my pillow, sleeping was a nightmare. i didn't look forward to it. flipping the pillows over, bunching the pillows up. with the my pillow, i don't need to do that anymore.
3:02 am
well, terri, it goes back to when i was 16 years old. i actually spent my whole first paycheck on a pillow, and that didn't work, by the way. my pillows would go flat, i'd use my arm, i'd always flip-flop. i'd have all these problems sleeping. and throughout my life, i bought every pillow out there, and nothing worked. then i started asking people, "do you have the same problems?" i thought it was weird. i thought i was the only one out there having these problems. i started asking people, "do you have these problems?" the problems were the pillow-- it wasn't the beds, it wasn't this, it wasn't that. it was pillows, and so i thought, "i'm going to go invent the world's most comfortable pillow and help everybody get the best sleep of their lives." i wasn't sleeping well, my neck would be stiff. i didn't realize the connection between the pillow and sleep. when i switched to my pillow, i got a better night's sleep and i love it. before my pillow, i had difficulty sleeping through the night. now with my pillow, i have a good night's sleep every night
3:03 am
because it gave me a restful night's sleep, one that i had not had before. well, mike, my pillow is really changing the way america is sleeping. 23 million people have already discovered the revolutionary my pillow. can you tell us what makes my pillow so different than any other pillow out there? absolutely, terri. we're going to go through a little timeline of pillows here. this is, by the way, a down pillow just like the one i bought s on this, she'll lay down, and we're going to show you. we've all went through this: you lay on down, it feels comfortable right away, and what does it do? it goes down. down is down, it becomes-- your neck is bent. and then what do we have a tendency to do? we stick our arm under there. and we prop ourselves up with our arm. what's it going to do to her arm? what'd it do to you when you had down? my arm fell asleep and my neck got sore. yeah, and that's everybody. down pillows are the worst things
3:04 am
then they have a lot of pillows made out of fiber-fill, and we've all slept on these. you lay on them, and it's like a trampoline. you move them, and they're not going to hold that position. you need something that keeps your neck straight at night for you, and this is not the job. it's like goldilocks and the three bears. we'd be better off stacking phone books, i always said, and putting a towel over it to get the right height for our neck. then they came out with the memory foam. remember this one? oh, yeah. when this came out, we all-- , "this is a great idea! it's going to match my neck perfect." and i got it and i'm going, "well, like we said before, we all have different size shoes, we all have different size shirts, our necks are different. how dare the pillow industry tell us that this was going to work for all of us?" i'm going to take this for becca, and i'm going to push this down to get to her comfort level. right there? good, mm-hmm. she's good. now if you sit up, becca. right there, this would be too low for me, it might be too high for you, this is becca's exact height,
3:05 am
would be too low. what if you were able to get a device that you could adjust it and get exactly what you need for an individual? it would be amazing. yeah, it would. guess what? here it is! whoa. it's my pillow. when i invented my pillow-- now you watch-- becca will lay on this, and you adjust it. she gets exactly what she needs for her. whether you're a side-sleeper, a back-sleeper, stomach-sleeper, it doesn't matter. my pillow does two things that no other pillow does in the world. it doesn't go flat during the night-- and it's supporting her exactly where she needs it: the arch of her neck. if you looked inside her neck, if you could, it's lined up perfect for her sleeping on her side. now if she goes to her back, if becca goes to her back, she can take it and she adjusts it exactly for her back sleeping. now look at this: we talked about that curved pillow before. that's her comfort level. look at this, it's amazing. it's exactly curved for becca. terri, sleep is all about avoiding sleep interruptions.
3:06 am
with my patented fill with my pillow, you can adjust my pillow to fit you instead of you trying to fit the pillow. just a quick reminder-- if you haven't done so already, please give us a call right now to discover the best sleep of your life on a my pillow. the my pillow is great. it holds its shape all night. if i'm going to be side-sleeping, i adjust it according to that. or if i'm going to be laying on my back, the my pillow adjusts to exactly what i need, and it feels great. what i couldn't do with my feather pillow, e my pillow. when i lay on it, i form it so that it fits the back of my neck. it'll sit like that all night. my pillow holds the shape that you put it in that you need for your sleep. it's the perfect thing every night. it's always the same. wow! it's really remarkable to hear about how much better people sleep because they finally have a pillow that they can adjust to their exact needs. but mike, you didn't stop there, did you? no, i didn't, terri.
3:07 am
my pillow would have. i give them a 10-year warranty. you can machine wash and dry my pillow, and i give them a 60-day money-back guarantee so they have nothing to lose. mike, you still make every my pillow in the usa, right? yes, i do, terri. i make all my pillows in my home state of minnesota. i have over 1100 employees now. every one of them gets a pillow when they come to work for me, so two things happen: they get the best sleep of their life and they know that every pillow going out that assembly line just like the pillow helped them. announcer: how did you sleep last night? did you have trouble falling asleep, toss and turn all night, or wake up feeling tired? if you're not getting the sleep you need, now you can with my pillow. hello, i'm mike lindell, inventor of my pillow. my patented fill adjusts to your exact, individual needs regardless of sleep position, and it holds that position all night long to take the pressure off your shoulders and keep your neck aligned
3:08 am
to order your my pillow. use the promo-code on your screen, and mike will give you a second pillow absolutely free. other pillows go flat, causing you to fold them over. you may even use two pillows or use your arm for support, which can cause pain. hard, foam pillows raise your head too high and heat up during the night, making you very uncomfortable. but the revolutionary my pillow has patented fill that won't go flat and keeps your neck and back supported and aligned to your exact, individual need. all night long so you get the best sleep ever. with my pillow, i can just relax and slip into that deep sleep and i stay there throughout the night, so i love my pillow. i've got so much more energy now during the day. i've tried a lot of other pillows, and nothing's worked like my pillow. announcer: and how about this? my pillow comes with an amazing 10-year warranty and is machine washable and dryable. plus every my pillow is made in the usa.
3:09 am

3:10 am
well, i actually came up with the logo first, before the pillow. i thought it was a great name: my pillow. it is. then i worked on it for about a year and a half. i tried all kinds of fills. i tried everything that you can imagine to go into a pillow. i knew what i wanted, and i was reverse-engineering it. it was just trial and error, trial and error. then when i finally came up with-- it finally worked, then i had to invent the machine that made the inside fill, the patented fill. so it was a year and a half of struggle. where did you take it after that? well, then i actually took the pillow and i went down to a-- i'm not going to name the box store. i said, "i have the best pillow ever made. how many would you like?" he goes, "you can't see our buyer," and it was a shut-out. i went everywhere. i'd go, "i've got the best pillow ever. i've got the best pillow ever." i gave pillows out to my friends and family, and i knew it worked. i was getting amazing feedback, and somebody said, "why don't you do a kiosk?" i didn't know what a kiosk was.
3:11 am
i said, "here, i'm out of cards," and i wrote it on a piece of paper and gave it to him. lo and behold, one of them called me in january and said, "are you the guy that invented this pillow in minnesota?" i said, "yeah," and he goes, "this thing created a miracle in my life." he said, "i run a home and garden show. would you like to be in it?" i'm going, "sure." wow. i'm going, "sure, i'll try it." i actually sold out in four days. then i got noticed by other shows. then it set off a thing where for the next six years i did shows. yeah. and when did the really big break hit? it was in january 3rd of 2011. one of the big papers in minnesota did an article about me in the business section. i had calls that day. i had told my friend, i said, "i had my phone set." it would go beep, beep, and he goes, "what's that?" i said, "that's an order coming in." i said, "someday my phone, i'm going to have to turn it off it's going to beep so much," and all of a sudden beep, beep, beep, beep, beep,
3:12 am
that article launched that morning and i'm going, "wow! this is incredible." people just like what's real, and i thought, "you know what? i'm going to bring the pillow to the people." my friends and family, we got together in the spring of 2011, and i said, "i want to make an infomercial that's real, right from the heart, a real audience." it launched on october 7th, 2011. i was living in my sister's basement. at 3:00 in the morning it came on. when that launched, we actually went from five or 10 employees it was just an explosion, and it was right before christmas that year. we became the number one infomercial in the world. all i wanted was to make sure everybody got their christmas presents in time. it was surreal. well, i have a little surprise for you, mike. i asked our producers to dig into the archives and queue up some scenes from that very first infomercial. let's take a look. what's going on here?
3:13 am
we've all slept with this pillow here. this pillow here, it pushes back. you know when you sleep on your back? yep, yep. you can feel that pillow. it's like a spring, it's pushing your back. right. you're on your back, and you're like this, with a tilted neck. this is no good, okay? this pillow here, it becomes a hard surface. we've all slept on that, with the curve. the problem is pillows give you support here and here, and you need support in your neck. this one here-- and also you need to be kept cool. this pillow here will heat up. aughing) what about this one? this one here is ruining america. oh, my gosh. we've all slept on this, there's no support. absolutely. this has done more for bad sleep deprivation than anything anywhere. this pillow here, i can't say enough bad things about it. it's terrible. the best thing you're going to like about this pillow is i get the deep, healing sleep, the stuff that helps all your health, how you feel the next day.
3:14 am
the stuff is warrantied 10 years it won't go flat, but the best thing it does: wherever you set this, until you first get comfortable on your pillow and you're like this and you go like this. connie, i want you to feel that. see how that holds. oh, my gosh, it's soft... that will not migrate. ...but supportive. wherever you set that, you get exactly what you need for your individual neck support. you can turn this any way you want. you can make little balloon animals out of it if you want. it's going to hold. so wherever you set that, it's amazing. it will change your life. there's nothing like it on the planet. it's just amazing. wow, those were funny parts from that infomercial. everybody will call up and say, "can you believe the guy did this?" but it was so real. we had so much fun making it. we just left that in there because it was real. well, mike, you haven't changed a bit and neither has your personal promise and guarantee. that's right, terri. i still have my 10-year warranty and my 60-day money-back guarantee.
3:15 am
for 10 years really helped sell me on it, to know that it's a great product. it shows a lot of integrity with the company, to realize that they stand by their product and that they do believe highly in what the product is. in the general products that you buy nowadays, you don't get that kind of a warranty, but that also tells you they stand behind this product and that it really does what he says it'll do. you know, you don't hear stories like yours very often, mike. and you've certainly come a long way. to now over a quarter million square feet and having over 1100 employees is just surreal. and we're all very proud to be making all of it, still, in my home state of minnesota. i feel truly blessed, but at the end of the day, the most important thing to me has always been about helping every individual get a better night's sleep. i know that sleep is the most important thing to your health and my pillow is the most important thing to your sleep.
3:16 am
until i found my pillow, i did not have a solution, and now i do. i sleep better. i wake up, i feel refreshed, i feel healthy. with a pillow that breaks down, you end up with shoulder and neck pain and discomfort in the morning getting up. with my pillow, that doesn't happen. i think you know that i'm completely sold on my pillow. now it's your turn. there are so many reasons to call. don't wait another moment to discover for yourself announcer: how did you sleep last night? did you have trouble falling asleep, toss and turn all night, or wake up feeling tired? if you're not getting the sleep you need, now you can with my pillow. hello, i'm mike lindell, inventor of my pillow. my patented fill adjusts to your exact, individual needs and it holds that support all night long to take the pressure off your shoulders and keep your neck aligned
3:17 am

3:18 am
l ever own. go to mypillow.com or call now to order one of my pillows. when you do, i'll give you a second one absolutely free. announcer: call or go to mypillow.com now. use the promo-code on your screen to get two my pillows for the price of one. my pillow comes with an unprecedented 60-day money-back guarantee, so you've got nothing to lose. don't delay. buy one and get one absolutely free. order now. i've tried this, i've used it, it does work. after i got my pillow, i slept better. how many people have my pillows. overall, it's just a better night's sleep. you know, hardly a day goes by where i don't hear someone complain about being tired, mike. terri, it's true. so many people out there are using sleep aids to get to sleep at night. and the first thing they do in the morning, even if they've slept eight hours, is get up and look for coffee or energy drinks. sleep affects everything we do.
3:19 am
how we interact with other people. road rage. road rage, there you go. with my pillow, that's my passion, is to help everyone in this world get the best sleep of their life. it affects your whole day, when you can't sleep. i just really wanted to have one pillow that i could trust every single night for a good night's sleep, and my pillow was it. because of the type of job that i do, i need my rest and i need to be awake. my pillow helps me get a good night's sleep my pillow is great because i feel like my entire body is more in line. sleeping on a my pillow i do believe ensures a good night's sleep. mike, can we get a closer look at what makes my pillow different and unique? terri, we've got to start from the beginning with pillows and showing the problem. we all start out-- this is the one, actually, i was 16 years old when i bought one like this, spent my whole paycheck on a down pillow thinking, "more money, better pillow." yeah.
3:20 am
you lay on this, and it just goes flat. so what do we do? we start scrunching it up. you flip-flop all night long on this pillow. you're always re-fluffing and then it's just going flat as soon as you lay on it. but if you take the concept of a down pillow. what if there was something we could move it and it would hold? hold that thought. all right, will do. that one's horrible. then you have the fiber fill. this pillow here is like a sponge and a spring. so if you don't match that exactly, you're doomed. this pillow is going to be-- your head is up in the air. your head's up in the air, or if it's too low, you're folding, and then it's-- it's like a spring, so it's just the opposite. and then we have the memory foam pillow. when this came out, this curve, i thought, "this is so cool. "it's going to match my neck perfectly, and it's going to work." first of all, when i tried this pillow, it didn't match me.
3:21 am
as too low. so i'm going, "what if there was such a device that you could make your own curve exactly for you as an individual, whether you were a side, back, stomach, it wouldn't matter." that's what i did with my pillow. the number one reason i invented my pillow was to get you the best sleep of your life. the way you get that is keeping your support exactly for you at night. and with my patented fill-- this one took the longest. i spent over a year and a half developing this one. there's three different sizes. they said, "mike, you're never going to get a patent on a pillow." i had half the people laughing at me, and the other half are going, "if you ever come up with it, let me know. i have the same problems." one's the size of a quarter. one's the size of a dime. and one's the size of down. all three sizes are mixed together, a proportional amount of each in the pillow, so wherever i move the pillow, wherever i set it... if you put your hand there, you see how that holds. yeah, absolutely. that holds exactly.
3:22 am
so if i'm laying on my side, i take it and i mold it and i get exactly what i need for my side sleeping. the difference between my pillow and every other pillow out there: it's going to stay there. it's going to hold that in position. the weight of my head holds that in position. it's soft, but yet i get the exact support for me. if i got to my back, i'm taking the pillow, i'm tucking it behind my back. i get the exact curve for me. wow! instead of trying to fit the pillow, i make the pillow fit me. it's just amazing. not only that, you can wash and dry my pillow every time. yeah, it didn't make sense if i made a pillow that lasts 10 years, i had to make it that you can wash and dry it so it stays healthy for that whole 10 years. i'd say that your 60-day money-back guarantee and 10-year warranty on my pillow certainly says loud and clear that you're willing to stand behind the product that you make. yes, terri, it's very important to me that everyone who buys my pillow is completely confident,
3:23 am
after i got my pillow, they had a couple little directions, and i thought, "boy, that seems like a really simple way to do it," but i slept, i closed my eyes and two minutes later i was out. i tried a couple other more expensive pillows that were the foam pillows or memory foam, and it just didn't really work. as soon as i tried the my pillow, it worked out great. i think that it is the most comfortable pillow i've ever had. it basically conforms to whatever your body requires-- you know, mike, i think the reason why so many americans relate to you is that you built your company from the ground up. yes, terri. and you know, i do all my own manufacturing. i have over 1100 employees in my home state of minnesota. everyone gets a pillow when they come to work for me, and they know then that every pillow that goes off that line, they have the same passion i do
3:24 am
that i just made the best pillow ever, is i wanted also the best customer service ever, so my customer service center is right outside my office and every call that comes in, i want them treated just how i would want to be treated. what an amazing journey you've had, from a little garage in minnesota to now having sold over 23 million pillows? and not only that, my pillow is the official pillow of the national sleep foundation. yeah, it has been amazing, terri. i feel so blessed even to be a part of it. and i'd like to thank each and every one of you out there for making this possible. announcer: do you wake up feeling tired, toss and turn all night, or have trouble falling asleep? you are not alone. people all across america aren't getting good rest. it's not only the amount of sleep you get that's important-- it's the quality of sleep. other pillows simply don't work.
