5:32 pm
an end. army beats navy 21-17. i'm joined by rick neuheisel and brian jones, for the first time since 2001 army gets it done. what a wild time it must be, from baltimore all the way to west point. >> brian: i thought army could win this year and i know i said they would win last year as well but the reason i was really -- solidified in my conviction was because the weight disparity closed on the offensive line for that's the reason they were second in the nation in rushing on the season and they showed that power running game throughout this ballgame. >> rick: can you imagine what was going through army's minds -- the fans of army's minds when zach abey went for that 41-yard touchdown, 17-14, my goodness. but the 80-yard drive, 12 plays, 80 yards, the long gray line got the long anticipated drive and congratulations, army. >> brian: it was about sustaining drives.
5:33 pm
13. navy, two of seven. we just remarked here that army had not completed a pass. what do they do? get edgar allen poe. >> adam: poetic justice. if army didn't turn the ball over, look how they dominated on the ground, 300 yards rushing, navy north of 100. >> rick: army's defense an outstanding front. they did a terrific job corralling navy most of the night. a couple of passes got them by surprise early in the third quarter and got n adam. this is a fantastic effort by the black knights. >> brian: who won the turnover ttle? the team that won the ballgame. army, three turnovers to four by navy and navy, i thought they could really cause army problems through the air but they couldn't. air force passed for 195 yards versus army. there in army's house. navy could not get that going with zach abey. >> adam: oerm army, they don't
5:34 pm
for the first time since 2001. >> rick: they took a page from navy, we talked about it in the pregame navy likes to be the boconstrictor, take the ball and play keepaway, over 40 minutes of possession time for army -- they outnavied navy. >> brian: we thought it was possible navy was worn out, first time, you said it during pregame, 1941, they didn't have a bye week going into the ballgame and played in the ago, lost to temple but in the second half they started to show they were the navy of old in the way they got down the field and zach abey a beautiful run by heim. looked like he was going to go down, tacklers were there, but hield not be denied. >> adam: were you surprised based on the time of possession and army's ability to run the ball when they didn't turn it over that navy punted when they did late in the game? >> rick: it was a calculated call for kenny niumatalolo, with one time out you knew you had to
5:35 pm
long plus jeff monken of the was two for two on fourth down, he was willing to take risks on fourth down. i'll bet kenny is kicking himself wondering if he should have gone for it. >> brian: four minutes left and a one-dimensional football team. up until then they had only completed two passes and i thought it was the right move to go ahead and punt with four minutes. "we can hold these guys, we know this offense like the back of our hand, force the i passion the rock requests but it would objected happen. >> adam: the turnovers were mistakes but army had no penalties in this game. >> rick: both these teams are flawless when it comes to penalties. navy led the country in the fewest penalties and to this game, i think they had two and army had maybe zero. >> brian: navy is the only team -- only team in the nation, navy, that has less than 300 yards penalties. >> adam: you talked about how navy might have been worn out playing eight straight weeks in the conference championship game, army had been off three
5:36 pm
with a lot more energy and had the 14-0 lead which was their largest lead in the game in many years and navy, of course, losing will worth, their quarterback. so they had to put it on zach abey to rally the troops and in the third quarter he was able to chip away. >> rick: ivin jasper realizing that rushing yards were going to be hard found, passing angles led to this touchdown, abey finishing the drive in one yard out. >>rian: going back to the pass again, busted coverage but you backs due to injuries for army and you saw navy take advantage of that. >> adam: this is the play where army -- around the world streaking. >> brian: not again. >> rick: four missed tacklos this run by abey. >> adam: gave them the lead. ahmad bradshaw capping the 12-play, 80-yard drive. >> brian: what a way to answer
5:37 pm
passes and they get in the end zone for the winning touchdown. >> adam: the coach's favorite moment. >> rick: victory. >> brian: ahmad bradshaw, why is he not grasping that football? it's the super bowl to army. they had lost 14 straight. >> adam: that football belongs at west point. >> brian: it has some value, i agree. >> adam: indeed an amazing win by army as they end that losing streak going back to 2001. we will discuss the college football playoff and hit the coaching carousel the heisman finalist when "the jeep post-game show" continues. ? well, if you want to sing out, sing out ? ? and if you want to be free, be free ? ? next saturday it is a college basketball triple header. memphis at oklahoma. followed by the cbs sports classic. ohio state taking on number two ucla. then number six kentucky battles number seven north carolina. coverage begins at noon eastern with "inside college pbl basketball" presented by progressive. about two hours from now, the heisman trophy will be awarded. we had all five fievenlts visit -- we had all five finalists visit us throughout the regardless of who wins tonight, how cool is this to share the experience with each other? >> it's awesome. the work that we put in all year, it's been a lot of a grind since the off-season, summer workouts, the extra throwing sessions and to have a little recognition and have fun together is awesome. >> it feels good to be here with my teammate because i know at any given time i can say "hip,
5:41 pm
>> adam: how did rock fights with your cousins play a role in developing your moves? >> i come from a smart town and you've got to catch out front, me and my cousins went across the street to the mailboxes, ripped the front of it off and my grandma's driveway was full of rocks, we would load up rocks in my jacket and fling them across the street to see which would be the first to make it in the after that got old we decided to throw rocks at each other. >> rick: turned out worth it. cloechl has had an unbelievable last half of the season but it didn't start out great. how did you stick together through those two early losses? >> we looked at the film. we didn't play great in two of the first three against good teams but we were still close on a lot of things and that's what we looked at. we were so close.
5:42 pm
season 1-2 when you're preseason ranked in the top five. you look at how close we were and we hadn't played a conference game yet and that was the biggest thing. we had the mindset to take i one day at a time, and put ourselves in a good position. we had like a team meeting and the captains held that team meeting and they brought us in there and was like hey, if you guys don't want to work, if you sooners, get up and get out, from that point we started holding each other accountable. >> gary: >> brian: did you hold him responsible for the bad throw that got you knocked out of the game? >> he's got the biletnikoff. he will be all right. >> adam: you're partners but i like picking on each other. >> tough love. >> brian: baker, you announced you're coming back next year. please lelease go.
5:43 pm
announce now that you are returning? >> a lot of factors, best for my future and i came to o.u., grew up an o.u. fan, it's a dream come true to play for coach stoops one more year and the ultimate goal is to win a national title, try to put pieces together to come back for a title run. >> adam: if you had a heisman vote, who would it be for? >> my guy over there. no offense to the guys here on the trip, they're great players but i have seen him do a lot of things in person. pretty ec >> he said lamar earlier. [laughter] >> no disrespect, lamar. >> adam: those guys are quick on their feet when they're on tv as well and it wasn't hard for our resident longhorn because those guys were great to have here? >> rick: that's called mean hugging. >> brian: they were outstanding. they were great. they kept dropping each other in the grease. i love that. they're tremendous football players, excellent leaders but
5:44 pm
that football team, mayfield almost 4,000 yards passing with 38 touchdowns, less than 10 interception sxuz throw dede in the mix and perine almost 1,000 yards rushing, mixon 1100 yards rushing, a ton of mouths to feed on that offense and they've got two in new york viewing for the heisman. >> rick: they both are outstanding and qualifi candidates for the heisman but the journey to get there, baker mayfield starteds played intramural and dede westbrook came through junior college, he had to buy his own cleats and figuring out is this all worth it yet here they are in new york city. >> adam: doing his own laundry. >> brian: hard work . >> adam: coming through blinn college and they'll be auburn's problem in the sugar bowl. we'll hear from the other three heisman finalists when "the jeep post game show qualities returns. (both) yes!

5:47 pm
>> adam: welcome back to "the jeep post-game show." here is a look at what's coming up tonight on cbs. a reminder. you're watching "the jeep post game show" on cbs. as for the other three heisman finalists, during halftime we spent some time with louisville's lamar jackson, deshaun watson of clemsonnd from michigan, jabrill peppers. i have to start with you, lamar. i went to syracuse. every time i imagine you doing something, you're hurtling that guy on the syracuse defense. you could have gone left. you could have gone right. at what point did you decide, "eh, i'm going to go over him." >> they was hitting me low and i couldn't let them hurt me. he came down and i decided to go with it. >> adam: you went over.
5:48 pm
>> yes, sir. [laughter] >> brian: lamar, go back to last year's bowl game against texas a&m, over 200 in the air, over 200 on the ground. duenvision having a heisman-like season coming into this year off the strength of that bowl game? >> i was looking to improve my game from starting off as a freshman and i started off bad throwing an interception my first play of the game, my first -- not may first start but going out there like i said before and i just tried to my craft, and we hit. >> rick: i think it worked. the story on the street is that coach petrino said we're not going to let you use your legs in spring ball. i had to learn how to operate from the pocket. is that accurate? >> yes, sir, he was saying he's deadly with his legs but wouldn't use his arm. we had success.
5:49 pm
wow. deshaun, your second straight trip to visitous this weekend, last year an undefeated season going into the playoffs, one lost this year but so many weeks it was a nail biter. how intense was this season? >> very intense because last year a lot of teams didn't think we would be as good but this year after we played in the national championship teams showed us respect and each and every week we got everyone's best shot and to the wire. hard to win consistently at this level. >> rick: college football playoff is thr years old yet you're the only quarterback to take a team back for a second trip. alabama has been there with different quarterbacks each time. differences year one and year two getting to the final four. >> year one it was new to us, we didn't know what to expect, going with the flow, happy to be there, this year we wanted to
5:50 pm
position and we whan it takes to get to the level, in the national championship we fell short because we made mistakes uthis year we want to focus on that and not just get there but finish it. >> adam: jabrill, like our in-house poet laureate, mr. neuheisel you have been known to put rhymes together. from your time spent with jim harbaugh and many experiences this season do you think you have enough material for some fresh tunes in the postseason? >> not right now. hear me after the i've got it. >> adam: after the interview. you've got a lot to go on, right, from these last few months. >> absolutely, absolutely. >> rick: you have had an inspiration in your life. you lost a brother. you have been vocal about what he means to you and your memory of him. give us a taste of that. >> my brother was a guy who was not doing what he was supposed to do but made sure i was doing the right things and when i tried to follow in his footsteps he would put me on track.
5:51 pm
told me i had a gift that maybe one day i could give mom a house in the hills and everything unfolding like he said. i'm more than grateful. >> brian: did you go to jim harbaugh and say, "coach, i've got immense talent, you need to play me on offense, and special teams," or did he come to you and say "i see something extra in your talent and i want to use you in a myriad of ways"? >> it's crazy because i have my high school head coach on the staff sos he was planting that to me and said can you run a flag route and catch a touchdown?" i said "i can do that." he said "can you run a read option?" i said i can. >> adam: if you had to choose one position, what would it be? >> i would probably go with safety. >> adam: doling out the hits oeshgszally genentech the ball in your hands? >> absolutely, absolutely. >> adam: withhold you vote for
5:52 pm
>> it's hard for me. so many great guys, all these guys, that's hard. you can't be doing that. >> rick: deshaun is the old vet. you have been through this. you've got a vote. who are you casting for? >> vito write the names down, put it in a hat and pick. >> brian: you can say yourself. you were here last year and you didn't get it. whoever wins tonight, salute those guys because they put in the work and they earned it. enjoy it and appreciate it. >> a lot of guys worthy but i think these guys are at the top of my ballot, no disrespect to baker and dede, they do a great job at what they do but i said before, lamar, i apologize but i had to give the nod to deshaun. he was here last year.
5:53 pm
one. they finished a little strong but nobody can knock waff done this year so it was a hard decision for me but just looking at it like that he was here last year the way he closed out his season, they'll probably give it to you next year anyway. >> brian: head to head doesn't matter with the playoff committee. >> rick: who's got the suit? you have been checking each other's threads. >> they might have the -- i've got the suit, i'll go on record saying that right now. >> adam: can't wait to see you on the playoff committee in about 15 years. thank you, guys of the best of luck. appreciate all your time. on their way out jabrill said "i want to do what you guys do." that's next for jabrill. >> rick: i was concerned about that. >> adam: i'm worried. great having five finalists. lamar jackson widely expected to win it but your pick is deshaun watson. >> rick: i think deshaun watson closed in such a way, six
5:54 pm
carolina, accounted for five touchdowns against virginia tech in the a.c.c. championship game, it wouldn't shock me that he comes from behind. >> brian: unfortunately most of the voters voted prior to the conference championship games which makes no sense to me -- you should wait until all the games are played and then -- and only then should you put your vote in. that makes no sense. wait until the games are done. >> adam: weren't those guys great? >> brian: outstanding. >> rick: peppers could be analyst. >> adam: plays 13 positions on the football field, he can handle anything. coming into today ken niumatalolo was 8-0 against army. now he's 8-1. allie laforce with the navy head coach moments ago. >> allie: coach, all great runs come to an end. how did you approach it with the team? what was your message? >> just that i love them and the outcome of the game doesn't change how i feel about them. i love them. they worked hard. give army credit. not going to make skugss.
5:55 pm
>> allie: how about the senior class. what will your message be to them? >> they're still the winningest class. we limped into this game. we knew that. they played better than us, coached better than we did, played better. hat's off to them. >> allie: zach had a tough first half but he showed resiliency and toughness in the second half and made improvements. what does it show you about the promises his future with this program? >> proud of the way he bounced , possession in the first half, had turnovers that hurt us but proud of the way zach bounced back in the second half. >> allie: what did you say to your friend jeff monken after the game? >> congratulated him, love him, we have known each other way before -- i knew him before he knew his wife and kids. he's a great man. happy for them. sad for us. but they deserved to win. >> allie: thank you so much for your time as always. >> thanks, allie.
5:56 pm
before. he will get ready for the armed forces bowl against louisiana tech. army faces north texas in their bowl game, a they played and lost to earlier this year but whatever, army beat navy for the first time since 2001. >> rick: you said it, adam, you hate to see kenny niumatalolo with the wind out of his sails but what a wonderful job he does with that navy program. as you mentioned, 10 wins this year. these guys really know what they're doing. they ran oust gas. this was a long run at the end of the year. today is army's jeff monken went from 2-10 last year to 7-5. they're going to the postseason and they ended the streak. >> brian: coach monken knew they needed to get bigger and they got bigger on the offensive line, they need to get bigger on the defensive line and i believe they will, what ken niumatalolo said about coming in injured -- you weren't at full strength. you're relying on a third string quarterback. that's difficult no matter where you play, who you're coaching.
5:57 pm
how arduous a task that is and yet they still have in the opportunity to win this football game. that tells you about the staff at navy and how well they coached their charges. >> adam: they missed will worth today, an obvious factor but perhaps now a new chapter or turning of the tide in the rivalry. >> rick: we love our armed forces, we salute them and we love the competitive endeavor we get to do each and every year. >> adam: i salute you. bowl. >> rick: happy holidays. >> adam: our football goodbye to verne as well. we thank you for watching "the jeep post game show." here is a look at what you will see tonight on cbs. a reminder. bowl season kicks off next saturday. 5:30 eastern on cbs sports network. the auto nation bowl. arkansas state and u.c.f. december 30 on cbs join us for the hyundai sun bowl. stanford takes on north
