in 1965 subway's founders had one simple mission. fresh sandwiches. it seemed crazy in a time when gimmicks were all the rage... but the idea of freshly made sandwiches with quality ingredients would stand the test of time . the subway sandwich shop. founded on fresh. we're back. it's 8:40. we're counting down to sunday's golden globes to kick off
8:35 am
it's always a wild night. >> we have the golden globes most unforgettable moments. dave, good to see you. you have a flight to get out to l.a. >> yes. >> this will be quick. this is one of the more fun award seasons, because of the alcohol. >> and the dinner is served 90 minutes before the show starts. all the nominees get there and the food is already gone. >> there is no food. >> but the wine is on the table. >> it's the 73rd annual golden globes. let's pick moments. >> we have to talk about christine in 1998, winning best actress and nowhere to be found. why? she's in the ladies' room. thankfully, robin williams was close to the stage, and he kind of bounded up on the stage and did improv and kept everybody happy and laughing for a little bit. then she has this funny moment, sh she say where she says, sorry, mom, i was in the bathroom. you'd think everyone else in hollywood would have learned
8:36 am
13 years later, renee did the same thing. she was in the bathroom. in the ballroom, they tell you, these are the categories coming up. >> you get to make an entrance when that happens to you. >> we're talking about it all these years later. there you go. 1998. >> he played don king in a tv movie and won the globe. he was nominated against jack lemon, an idol of his. he called jack lemon up on stage and said, being an artist is about giving and i'd like to give this to you. at first, jack tried to refuse it. wouldn't have it. here's jack lemon with the speech. >> they made a duplicate. >> that's funny.
8:37 am
and he won another after that. he had seven, counting the one he didn't really win. >> we teased the moment before the break with elizabeth taylor. >> yeah. >> 2001, she's presenting the final award of the night. as the golden globes go on, they do present clips of all the nominated movies. she was supposed to come up and read the nominees off one last time, and then open the envelope and announce the winner. she started opening the envelope before reading off the nominees. everyone thought she was going to announce the winner prematurely. dick clark had to explain to her what to do. then she announced. >> in her defense, you know from doing the live shows, unless you do this, you have to know to go out there. there's an order and it's not easy to get it right. >> it's unpredictable. not easy. >> not at all. >> remember the golden globes when there was no golden globes? >> oh, do i remember. i was on nbc with billy bush and nancy odell, nbc special, where
8:38 am
it wasn't the highest rated golden globes. >> it was a writers strike. >> the writers strike killed the golden globes. none of the stars were going to show up. instead, they had this press conference thing where some entertainment reporters read off the winners. as i said, nbc did a special. here's what i hate, this was the only time jon hamm won a golden globe for "mad men," and there was no ceremony for him to show up to and make a speech. the golden globes never give it to you unless you're a new show. >> jodie foster and her speech two years ago, she won the life achievement award. she's so private so we didn't know what she was going to talk about. she was revealing and personal. she had a brilliant moment. you felt like she was going to come out, i am loud and proud, i am single! everybody started laughing.
8:39 am
george clooney and julia roberts this summer "money monster." she hasn't retired, but hasn't acted. >> still in the business. >> we love her. >> maybe one of ricky gervais's opening monologue moments will make your list next year. >> i love when he hosts. he's one step over the line of being appropriate. >> you saw mel gibson, who is presenting this year. that's open season for ricky gervais gervais. >> we'll sit down with ricky. >> great. >> we'll make our own golden moment, as viewers try to win the ticket to the golden party. >> you can catch it sunday night on nbc. natalie, matt, tamron, willie and i will be live from the red carpet. we'll have the looks and more monday morning on "today." up next, a live performance from rachel platten. she's awesome, and she's coming up next. first, this is "today" on
8:40 am
>> announcer: the citi concert series on "today" is proudly presented to you by citi. >> all right. rachel platten scored one of 2015's biggest hits with her multi-platinum single "fight song." that video is used more than 120 million times on youtube. >> plat her new album, "wildfire." while people think you might be an overnight success, you've been working at this 15 years. >> yes. it's been quite a long time when you put it like that. i hope i never am not pinching myself. i'm so grateful and excited continually by these amazing things that have happened this year. >> "fight song" has been an anthem for so many people. it took you a couple years to finish writing that song. >> it was a beast to write. it was really hard.
8:41 am
rest of the song was hard. i did ten verses. i wanted it to be right. >> you did get it right, by the way. congratulations. >> thanks. >> did you have to use the fight attitude with the new record, or did it come easier? >> yeah. i poured so much of myself into all of the songs on "wildfire." not all were as hard to write as "fight song," but they had the honesty and raw emotion. >> you're going on tour and you're excited about your bus. rolling in style. >> i was in a van for a very long time. i owned a van, still do, and i upgraded to a bus. >> got a good one? >> i don't know. i haven't seen it. >> we have to pick the bus. roady. you." >> take it away.

rachel sounds great. we'll be singing it all day. >> "fight song" is next hour. >> wheel of fortune! >> i visited pat and vanna in l.a. >> how was that? >> terrific. i turned the letters -- >> they still turn? >> you touch. they're digital. we have a little piece of video, and i was on "wheel of fortune" with my mom years ago. >> great memory. >> carmen electra is joining us.
