miners who have been trapped for hours more than 70 stories below ground in upstate new york. tom costello is following the latest on this rescue operation. >> the fire department calling this a major rescue operation that's playing out as we speak. they've brought in a giant crane to help free 17 miners who have been trapped all night underneath the cayuga salt mine. they're planning to lower a basket down to lift out the miners two or three at a time. the 17 miners became trapped about 10:20 last night when they were headed down to the mine. 2,300 feet below ground, starting their shift. the mine operator cargill says none of the trapped miners is injured and rescuers have been able to lower down water, heat packs and blankets to them. unclear how long it might take to lift them all to safety. the mine has been operating

it processes 2 million tons of road salt each year. guys, back to you. >> we'll keep an eye on that. tom costello, thank you. bad news if you were hoping to wake up this morning as the nation's newest multi-millionaire. there was no powerball jackpot winner last night. the $500 million plus rolls over into saturday night. it's going to get crazy good on saturday. nbc's kerry sanders is back on powerball watch again. kerry, good morning. >> good morning. if you're waking up this morning and you got to go to work and you're sad, maybe this will cheer you up. take a look at how much larger the jackpot is when they do the it on saturday. before you take your tickets and rip them up before you lost, look at the numbers that were pulled last night. this would have been a record jackpot at $550 million.

there was at least one winner. somebody got $1 million on their ticket in the houston area. here are the numbers again. the powerball numbers are 2, 11, 47, 62, 63 and that powerball number was 17. no winners there. the ticket buying frenzy will get crazier. yesterday, when the ticket value of the jackpot was going to be $550 million, they were selling more than 1,300 tickets a second. a tremendous number of tickets being sold. now it's $675 million. consider this, guys, that is more than the budgets of some tiny nations. it's a lot of money. >> well put, kerry. it's a lot of money. thank you very much. let's move to politics now. in the presidential race, donald trump is escalating his attacks on republican rival ted cruz, reiterating questions about the

the alleged attackers, two cough mother -- sophomores and one senior, have been kicked off the team, is suspended from school and charged. two are in custody. the freshman victim was released from the hospital after surgery and eight days of treatment. he's left the school. in a meeting wednesday night, hamilton county superintendent rick smith cancelled the basketball season. >> i'm extremely limited in what i can say or communicate public i. i i am heartbroken about this. >> reporter: more students are speaking out. four students telling investigators the incident was not isolated. part of a standing tradition called beating in. alleging previous hazing also occurred in the locker rooms on campus with the lights off. the alleged rape victims family calling for the coach to be fired. other students say the ritual existed before he was coach. the coach's attorney now denying

13 years later, renee did the same thing. she was in the bathroom. in the ballroom, they tell you, these are the categories coming up. >> you get to make an entrance when that happens to you. >> we're talking about it all these years later. there you go. 1998. >> he played don king in a tv movie and won the globe. he was nominated against jack lemon, an idol of his. he called jack lemon up on stage and said, being an artist is about giving and i'd like to give this to you. at first, jack tried to refuse it. wouldn't have it. here's jack lemon with the speech. >> they made a duplicate. >> that's funny.

and he won another after that. he had seven, counting the one he didn't really win. >> we teased the moment before the break with elizabeth taylor. >> yeah. >> 2001, she's presenting the final award of the night. as the golden globes go on, they do present clips of all the nominated movies. she was supposed to come up and read the nominees off one last time, and then open the envelope and announce the winner. she started opening the envelope before reading off the nominees. everyone thought she was going to announce the winner prematurely. dick clark had to explain to her what to do. then she announced. >> in her defense, you know from doing the live shows, unless you do this, you have to know to go out there. there's an order and it's not easy to get it right. >> it's unpredictable. not easy. >> not at all. >> remember the golden globes when there was no golden globes? >> oh, do i remember. i was on nbc with billy bush and nancy odell, nbc special, where

it wasn't the highest rated golden globes. >> it was a writers strike. >> the writers strike killed the golden globes. none of the stars were going to show up. instead, they had this press conference thing where some entertainment reporters read off the winners. as i said, nbc did a special. here's what i hate, this was the only time jon hamm won a golden globe for "mad men," and there was no ceremony for him to show up to and make a speech. the golden globes never give it to you unless you're a new show. >> jodie foster and her speech two years ago, she won the life achievement award. she's so private so we didn't know what she was going to talk about. she was revealing and personal. she had a brilliant moment. you felt like she was going to come out, i am loud and proud, i am single! everybody started laughing.
