and we are learning what donald trump' s new supporter is doing to ted cruz' s campaign. you are waking up with the sunrise team on this thursday morning. i am jason guy. michelle: and i am michelle imperato. ted, what is happening out there? ted: two left lanes blocked just past saxon boulevard. this tends to be a slow area in the 6:00 area approaching the st. john' s area. the accident happened about 15 minutes know, so we will keep a close eye on that. you' ll be slow getting on i-4 and traveling through south volusia county. cars in downtown orlando, westbound on the right, conway told plaza to i-4 is only a short, four-minute commute if you leave now. that is some good news there, eric. eric: that is right here at good news in the world of weather, my friend.

58 hour 9:00 temperature. 71 lunchtime and 74 degrees by 3:00 today. no rainfall in the forecast. our first alert doppler radar is nice and quiet. here are temperatures at least about the door. sanford, 34 degrees, 41 daytona beach, 53 degrees over in cocoa. as we look ahead to the daytime high temperatures today, it is almost in some areas a 30-degree climb from our morning temperature. a 72 degrees in ocala after starting in the 30' s. 74 degrees in claremont, 73 eustis, 74 orlando and winter garden, 72 in day land, new smyrna beach. we are tracking a blizzard storm advisory, but will do believe the same storm system has an impact on central florida? i have complete coverage of that straight ahead. jason: new from overnight, detectives in sanford are searching for answers after a shooting.

michelle: that is right here in the scene is on mellonville avenue near east 4th street. that' s just south of lake monroe. alex villarreal is live this morning. alex, what are they telling you? alex: we talked to one neighbor who says she lived next door to the unit where this shooting happened. she said she was asleep when it all was going on, but that her boyfriend called 911 because he heard somebody say someone was killed. she asked that we not use her last name. gaby: he was looking out the peephole, and i guess there was a lot of commotion going on next door. he called 911 because he heard somebody say that they got shot or somebody' s dead. and then he was looking, and i guess he saw someone running in and out. kids were crying. there was a big commotion. alex: we are still working to confirm with police that there was indeed a death in this shooting.

when we got out here around 4:30, police had this apartment building surrounded with crime scene tape. a csi team was also out here conducting an investigation inside. again we are working now to , confirm who was injured in this shooting and whether it was in fact deadly. that neighbor we talked to said as many as six kids under the age of 10 also lived in the apartment and that children could be heard crying after this happened. she said she' s worried about those kids and thankful that her own children are ok. the fact that investigators were out here over five hours since this happened last night seems to indicate that the shooting was indeed serious. again, to give you a better idea of where we are, these are the kensington oaks apartments in sanford on south mellonville avenue. we are in touch with the sanford police department to find out more about what happened. as soon as we get that information, we will bring it straight to your. live in sanford, alex villarreal, wesh 2 news.

michelle: this morning as a woman recovers from a vicious pit bull attack, we' re learning new information. there is a link to a similar brutal attack that happened just weeks ago. wesh 2' s brett connolly joins us in the studio to explain. brett? brett: michelle, in the most recent attack, a police report says an officer was forced to kill the dogs that were mauling this woman. and last month in this complex, two people were bitten by pit bulls. it was a bloody week at the stonebrook apartments in sanford earlier this week after a woman is nearly killed by pit bulls inside a third floor apartment. an officer opened fire, killing five of six dogs in the room. while that woman recovers, we' re learning more of a similar attack last month in the complex where two people were bitten, including a responding police officer. neighbors are concerned. especially those that have seen the dogs in the apartment. >> every time we would walk by, they would come to the window, and they had ripped the blinds completely down. they had, like, destroyed it day by day and just ripped the blinds down. we weren' t even sure if they had food or water in there because

brett: wesh 2 stopped by the last known address of the man believed to be the owner of the dogs in last months incident, but no one was home. neighbors say he and the dogs were evicted several days ago. authorities are trying to determine if the dogs involved the attack earlier this week are the same ones that were in last month' s incident. jason? jason: all right, still some things to sort out in this one. thank you, brett. in apopka, officials are looking to see if there are more victims of this former elementary school teacher charged with capital sex crimes. 66-year-old donald sharp was a third grade teacher when apopka police say he molested a young girl in a secluded school hallway. police say the molestations were kept a secret for seven years. the victim only recently started acting out, showing signs of post-traumatic stress, before finally telling her mom the secret she had been living with since 2008. sgt. chittenden: he took her and outside on multiple occasions and ran his hands down in the front of her pants and molested her. jason: sharp is charged with sexual battery on a child under the age of 12.

if convicted, he faces life in prison. michelle: there are new details this morning on the so-called affluenza teen. attorneys for ethan couch say he will return to texas from mexico within weeks. couch has been challenging extradition since last month. court officials announced yesterday that paperwork has been filed to get rid of the injunction that' s keeping the 18-year-old in that country. couch went to mexico with his mother after violating his probation in a drunk driving case. he was drunk when he crashed, and four people were killed. this morning, chole' s law is one step closer to becoming official. it' s a bill named after ucf student chloe arenas who died in an accident in orange county. back in july, the 21-year-old drove into a retention pond on alafaya trail across from the exit ramp to state road 408. in the weeks that followed, a wesh 2 news investigation helped generate momentum for a law that would add barriers to the road to prevent future accidents. a committee in tallahassee voted to advance the bill to another vote yesterday. clarissa lindsey: chloe was such

>> you are watching wesh 2. jason: sanford police spend all night investigating a shooting at kensington oaks apartments off mellonville avenue. police aren' t saying how may people were involved or the extent of their injuries. we well continue to update this story as we learn more. michelle: apopka schools are trying to figure out if there are more victims in a sex crimes case involving a former elementary school teacher. 66-year-old donald sharp was a third-grade teacher when police say he molested a young girl in a secluded school hallway. jason: right now, we are following breaking traffic news and volusia county. problems for drivers on i-4. a crash involving a semi truck has the left lane blocked in the westbound i-4 lanes just before saxon. ted noah is back with updates for you. in seminole county this morning, commissioners could soon crack down on panhandlers in the area. michelle: leaders are being pushed to create tougher laws by passes

they say panhandlers at several major intersections are creating major safety concerns. the county beefed up its ordinance a year ago. under the ordinance, people are not allowed to go up to windows, tap on them, or block traffic. but residents say not enough is being done to enforce it. annette sims: the panhandlers are coming up to windows, tapping on the windows, walking in front of traffic, sometimes two and three lanes. michelle: commissioners say they have no problem revisiting the ordinance to see if it needs adjustment. if a change is made, it will most likely be to certain intersections, making them off limits. jason: a motion to fund a shelter for the homeless in daytona beach has been put on hold. last night, volusia county commissioners said they won' t make a decision on the volusia safe harbor project until next month. it is a proposed 24/7 service center for homeless single men and women on the west side of the city. the mayor says he does not feel comfortable committing the city' s resources to the project without knowing whether other counties and cities will lend their support. michelle: new this morning, if you bought a hoverboard from amazon over the holidays, the company says it will give you a refund.

over growing concerns that the two-wheeled balance boards are not safe and could catch fire. the government is currently investigating more than three dozen instances of hoverboards smoking or bursting into flames. experts are also urging users to wear safety gear because some falls can be serious. urgent preparations are underway right now for a major snow storm developing for the east coast. jason: the worst is expected to hit tomorrow, and forecasters say this could be the biggest storm in a century in some cities. michelle: wesh 2' s brett connolly joins us in the studio . brett, this comes on the heels of another storm already impacting several states. brett: that is good morning, guys. we are talking about 50 million people that could be impacted. if you have friends and family living along the eastcoast, we are really talking about north carolina and above. they are currently in the path of this storm. and some cities not accustom to big snowfall totals are preparing for potentially record

if the forecasting models hold true, d.c., philadelphia, new york, and boston would get hit hard. our nation' s capitol expecting two feet. the area has 2000 volunteers with shovels ready to clear walkways and more than 800 on snow teams to clear roads. residents are preparing for the storm. wendy anderson: we didn' t own a snow shovel since we moved here so we thought we' d better get , one. brett: they will need more than one theater look at this. it was a slippery drive for president obama taking his motorcade back to the white house. the normal 25-minute drive from joint base andrews took an hour and 10 minutes because of slick roads and accidents. back here in a central florida, we obviously do not need to worry about the snow, but there is a ripple effect from the storm that we will feel. eric: it is a testament to how good this forecasting is. if you take a look, there are just a few no showers in the nation' s midsection. take a look. i have the latest model data to take you through time as we

track this winter storm. on our futurecast model, we can see over the course of the day today and into tomorrow morning, this is 11:30 tomorrow, you have got that big comma shape. on the south side, that trailing cold front will bring storms to central florida midday tomorrow. of course, that northern section is really the focus. 6:00 p.m. friday evening, snow shield, west virginia back into virginia, washington, the the, maryland -- washington, d.c., maryland. that blue shade over washington, d.c. is the heavy snow that extends into southern portions of pennsylvania -- harrisburg, lancaster, for example. the rain is on shore, the snow sitting across the nation' s eastern seaboard. look at this -- by midnight sunday morning, else knowing and washington, d.c., but the snow begins to -- still snowing and

jason: new this morning on sunrise, the coyote hunt in indian harbour beach has been called off. michelle: state officials say the cat-eating scavengers have every right to be where they are. we told you last week that trappers starting using drones and trail cameras to try to find a den of coyotes in gleason park. city leaders were hoping the trappers could remove the coyotes, but fish and wildlife commission officials have just informed them the coyotes are not considered a nuisance and cannot be trapped in the park. this all started after home security video caught a coyote chasing a neighbor' s cat, which has disappeared. jason: some buzz in the nfl about a historic hire. the buffalo bills just added a woman to its coaching staff. kathryn smith has just become the first full-time female assistant coach in nfl history. she will be the bills' special teams' quality control coach. smith has a history with current head coach rex ryan. she was his administrative assistant when ryan was with the jets. that is awesome. michelle: a local security guard is run down by a man suspected of driving under the influence. jason: coming up on sunrise, we are taking a look at this

an apartment complex going up in flames. look at this scene from overnight. it was 2:00 a.m. that eight units were destroyed by flames in the westchester manor apartments. everyone was able to get out safely. michelle: a local campus security guard recovers from a nasty crash. the man accused of hitting him will head to court. not only do police say the suspect may have been drunk but he also allegedly tried to run from the scene. brett connolly is joining us with more on what happened. brett: students and staff shocked to hear the security guard was hit in alledge drunk driver and this guard was in his golf cart roaming around the school. take a look at this aftermath. that golf cart leaned up against the tree. it was pinned by an suv. james sensenbaugh was taken to

that is the way our day will and but then it changes tomorrow as this area of high-pressure -- it exits and allows the storm system to move in. the actual low stays to the north. that is why severe weather will stay to the north of us. this cold front will bring us showers even the potential of thunder showers. here is the timing on the rainfall. 10:00 starting to see rain moving into our western zones. by one :00, heavy downpours marion county sumter county. 3:00, that activity moves to central florida. severe weather across the florida panhandle. and isolated thunderstorms at best, the threat of severe weather well to our north. today it is a mix of clouds and

sunshine. 74 high, a beautiful day. tomorrow, 80% chance of rainfall across central florida. once that frontal boundary moves on through, we clear out and we cool down. not to the point that our friends up north for dealing with with a blizzard but it is going to be central florida cool. sunny skies around marion county, we are going to be once again talking about hard freeze possibilities. more on that to come in the next couple of days. ted: i-4 westbound just passed saxon boulevard, a crash involving a semi-and as you can see, it is slowing things down. getting through the deltona area, just under a four mile backup. on i-4 westbound, there is left lane blocked and back up this morning. give yourself some extra time.

trouble in marion county right now on i 75, we have a crash blocking all lanes. it is right on county road 434. if you have to travel on i 75, they are truck -- letting traffic by on the right shoulder. you can take 484 back onto i 75 to get around the crash. 408 westbound, it is not so bad this morning. jason: these are the stories making headlines. sanford police investigating an overnight shooting. michelle: this happened at the kensington apartment. police are not saying how many people are involved or the extent of their injuries. jason: officials are trying to figure out if there are more victims in a sex crimes case involving a former elementary school teacher. donald sharp was a third grade teacher when police say he molested a young girl in a secluded school hallway.

hitting a security guard in orlando is prepared to go to court. maurice lopez garduno slammed into a golf cart and ran away. jason: 18 suspected in a crowbar attack is expected to take a plea deal. she and two others are accused of eating a 17-year-old in the driveway of his home. michelle: the coyote hunt in indian harbour beach has been called off. city leaders were hoping the trappers could remove the coyotes. officials say coyotes are not considered a use and -- nations and cannot be tracked in the park. jason: firefighters say flames were contained to a giant shredder at the building on north orange awesome trail on lee road.

in the afternoon, the good stuff continues. 71 for midday temperatures, today back to about above average. it will just be gorgeous. unlike the roadways. ted: 6:59. we have a crash on i-4 westbound just passed saxon boulevard. super slow, going through seminole and volusia because we have a crash blocking a left lane. a crash popped up on colonial drive, it is blocking and causing a backup. use 408 as an alternate. here is a live picture of i' ve westbound where we have that crash. all lanes blocked on 75 south round on county road 44. use county road and get back onto 75 as your backup plan. jason: the today show is next
