a driver was taken into custody. we'll get to that story ahead. thank you for joining us. >> we are start off with your first alert forecast. that is lake eola you're taking a look at on your friday morning. let's go to eric. eric: it is friday. we're ready for the weekend and ready to get the storms through central florida. they're going to be moving through quickly. some of them will be relatively strong. the good news is we've been saying all week long the majority of the ingredients necessary for severe weather stay across north florida. a 90% coverage of storms through lunch time. 3:00, that's a 40% chance of storms. out. at this hour our first alert doppler radar is tracking some of these showers coming in. a pretty decent swath of marion, sumter, lake counties you'll be first to see the rainfall.

on your doorstep in the next few moments time. then it moving in. i want to show you nasty storms up in north florida. this line of severe thunderstorms will be moving into tallahasee next. and this is why we're watching this potential for severe weather in our area. just because we're kind of in this pattern, this el nino year, if you will. 72 degrees with a 90% coverage of rainfall for us in clairmont. 72 orlando and 73 degrees in titusville. while it's quiet now, it's a good time to pick up your smart phone, grab the wesh 2 first alert weather app. it will send you alerts, kind of a backup source for your weather radio. hopefully things are quiet on the roadway. >> we're looking at i-4 in seminole county, lake mary. westbound on the left. we tend to get busy conditions early in the morning but they're not there yet. nice and

things look good near the turnpike, eastbound on the right side. in the heart of downtown orlando we're looking at i-4 focused at colonial drive. 54 miles an hour. the big stretch on the turnpike to colonial only 8 minutes. jason: parts of the nation now bracing for a massive winter storm. it could dump up to three feet of snow in some places. michelle: crews have been very busy in the northeast with salt that will be used to deice the roadways and sidewalks. this storm is expected to have a huge impact on airports across the country. jason: hundreds of flights have been canceled and that's having a ripple effect here in florida. we're live at o.i.a. how is the board looking? any cancellations? >> jason, there are about a half dozen right now and travelers are going to be seeing a lot more red as the day continues and into tomorrow. and that's in more ways

take a look. those red, canceled statuses on the arrival and departure boards, many of them are flights to and from charlotte. it is all because of this dangerous east coast snowstorm. american airlines said it was canceling all flights today in and out of charlotte. flightaware.com said more than 4,000 flights across the country today and tomorrow have been scrapped already. the focus here is safety but this of course is going to create a big mess for travelers today and through the weekend. we did just talk to a woman who lives in charlotte herself. she says she had to quickly change her flight plans when she found out about the cancellations today. >> scramble at the last minute so i could go home a pack and rush to the airport and try to get on stand by. i was blessed that i got

seat for orlando. >> the storm is also affecting amtrak service in our area. the auto train from outside sanford is not running today or tomorrow. we even have our own chance of severe weather today. eric has been telling you about that this morning. those thunderstorms could also affect flights here and out of o.i.a. we will be keeping our eyes on all the travel alerts, and all the travel, the situation on the roads as well and the trains. when you need your updates come back and tune into wesh and check us out on-line at wesh.com. michelle: of course that storm will have a major impact on our nation's capital today. all federal government offices in washington, d.c. will be closing at noon today. d.c. has also declared a state of emergency along with five states. store shelves have been emptied from kentucky to

preparing for these storms. wesh 2 will be staying on top of our local weather all day long. for updates go to the wesh 2 mobile app. also team coverage on the air if any severe weather hits central florida. >> a gunman is on the run after a shooting at a troubled complex across the road from u.c.f. jason: one person was shot just across from the university. that victim is expected to survive. police don't have a good description of the shooter. we've been telling you for the past few months about several crimes at that complex that usually lead to a students. >> new from overnight, a florida highway patrol trooper was involved in a wreck in orlando. this is video just in to wesh 2 of the scene. into the back of the morning. that driver was taken into custody on suspicion

the trooper wasn't hurt. michelle: deputies are looking for anyone who may have seen an overnight crash that injured a woman in orange county. they say the woman got into an argument with a man at her home. as they were fighting the man drove away with the woman hanging on to his car. she let go, when she was hit by another car passing by. if you have any information call crime line at 1-800-423-tips. jason: the former pedi cab driver accused of raping a customer could learn his rape. rape with the victim after she offered it. the victim claims the man dragged her from the cab and raped her. michelle: a local security guard died after a crash on campus. the golf cart was hit by a suspected drunk driver. now he has died from his injuries. the driver is held on a

i-95 is back open in volusia county. the northbound lanes were shut down last night after a dump truck crashed into a bridge. officials tell us the driver of that truck was taken to a hospital and expected to be all right. troopers say he mistakenly left the back part of his dump truck raised. michelle: a registered sexual predator is behind bars in seminole county. detectives say walter ambrose raped a 13-year-old girl on tuesday in long wood. he has already been convicted of sexual battery in orange, brevard and seminole counties. police say he put a knife to the child's throat and forced himself upon her in the girl's home. jason: more new information in the case of an orlando woman missing for nearly a decade. police held a news conference today about where the investigation into jennifer kesse's disappearance stands.

in 2006 and hasn't been seen since. last year detectives released what you see on the right of your screen, this computer-generated photo of what she may look like today. michelle: overnight state media in korea reported an american student has been arrested. the man is a student from the university of virginia. the government report says that he committed a hostile act to undermine the north. so far there is no u.s. comment on this report. jason: the time 6:09. we've got our team monitoring the weather that could be coming our way and could be severe in the day ahead. the northeast is bracing for. michelle: us, we're noontime. eric is tracking it. eric: the good news is it's going to be quick to through. but we've got a 90% chance of seeing showers and thunder showers across central florida. high temperatures limited because of the rain and cloud cover, into the low and mid 70's. here a look at the thriet and radar.

cropping up across the nature coast. marion, sumter and lake counties. that's the actual line we're watching. as it pushes towards us, that is going to bring us precipitation to the north and brings us the chance of strong storms today. here's the future model. stopping this at 10:00 this morning. there's that line of storms pushing in. there's 12, 12:30, so plan accordingly. probably not a good one to walk today. 65 degrees, 9:00. 10% chance of chance. as we push to the lunch hour, 90% chance of showers and storms around. 6:10 is the time. we'll be monitoring that threat for strong storms today. more in the next couple of minutes. >> this is westbound in the main shot over i-4. no delays getting on to i-4 via the ramps. we'll keep an eye on that. so far nice and quiet. here's westbound on the west side.

jason: 6:14. for the third time in a little more than a week bracing for a lot of storms caused by the el nino season. look at what we're watching on our radar. this comes as much of the east coast prepares for a massive winter storm. washington, d.c. could get the biggest impact with three feet of snow. this storm has already caused hundreds of flight cancellations and we have live team coverage for you on sunrise. michelle: a gun man on the loose after an overnight shooting at u.c.f. investigators tell us a 19-year-old man was shot in the back and was taken to the hospital.

to the jason: a trooper was involved in a crash in orlando. a white toyota corolla ran into the back of the cruiser. that driver was taken into custody under suspicion of d.u.i. the trooper wasn't hurt. >> new police body cam footage shows the moments high on heroin crashed into a building on u.c.f. campus. michelle: police say he admitted to being high. they tell us the 35-year-old crashed thrup a brick wall last monday. u.c.f. police recently with the heroin problem. they are now carrying an anecdote for heroin students say they just can't believe it. >> a heroin problem on campus? >> no. >> there's a lot of coke on campus but i haven't heard anything about heroin. >> it's a bigger problem than we know. >> it's a

forming some kind of task force the senate is not in order to handle -- in order to handle the issue responsibly and as delicately as possible. michelle: lopez was not a u.c.f. student. jason: the t.s.a. says it seized more guns than ever at airports last year. more than 2,600 guns were found. 80% of them were loaded. this marks a 20% increase over the number of guns found in 2014. dallas's international airport alone had 153 seizures. t.s.a. confiscated 53 from orlando international michelle: the bill that would allow students to carry licensed weapons on florida campuses appears to be dead. several university presidents and faculty members spoke out against it along with police chiefs across florida. even u.s. representative debbie wasserman schultz is fighting to kill the bill. >> college kids don't need guns.

environment where a stressed out or intoxicated student could turn a difficult situation into a deadly one is irresponsible. michelle: a campus carry bill in the house is ready to go to the full chamber. the chairman of the senate judiciary committee says it is unlikely the bill will make it to that committee. >> in commitment 2016, florida senator and republican presidential candidate marco rubio is creating buzz on-line this morning. jason: he went on the tonight show with jimmy fallon and talked about his campaign strategy, having some fun as to what he might do if he doesn't win the republican nomination. >> would you consider being vice president? >> no. that's not what i'm thinking about. i want to be like commissioner of the nfl which is more powerful than the president sometimes. >> you want to be commissioner of the nfl? >> yeah. they have one now. i'm saying when the next one comes up. jason: rubio is back on the campaign trail this weekend. he's holding a town hall in

michelle: those seem like two totally different jobs. jason: i think it is politicians go on those to be funny. get that queue score up there. >> we're hoping to keep the score on storms down today. very interesting. the school bus forecast doesn't look storms are going to be moving through central florida through the middle part of the day. this morning it's much milder. showers in our western areas. through the day it's going to be watching those storms exit off the east coast. not bad. 60 degrees in orlando. 59 in the villages. temperatures are coming up because we're moisturening the atmosphere, so the temples are not able to stay lower. it is 18 degrees lower this morning, 25 degrees lower in ocala and 15 degrees warmer in orlando. there's the line of storms we're watching as it's going to be moving toward's florida's west coast.

worst weather to move in. 10 to 12 for marion, sumter and most of lake counties. then the i-4 corridor lunch time until 2:00. that pushes off into southern portions of brevard county by about 2:00 this afternoon. we talk about a severe weather threat. the biggest threat is going to be gusty winds. is it going to be up to that severe criteria of 58 miles an hour? we're hoping not. but generally speaking with these things moving at 40 miles an hour we could be talking about some of that. heavy downpours of course but the biggest concern of tornadoes stays well to our north. this is what we've been saying all week long. our tornado index threat puts it at about a 2 on a scale of 1 to 10 because the dynamics are staying north of us. we're watching it for you but no real adjustment to that forecast. it is associated with a cold front, so the chances to see a severe thunderstorm are there. we clear things outs and do so in a hurry. today it's

the -- 90% coverage of the stuff. 74 degrees in melbourne. not going to be a washout of a full day. this morning showers. midday thunderstorms. by the time you get done with work, it's going to be improving. here's 10:00, some of those showers ahead of the main line. there's that line of storms. through lunch time it pushes through, brings us nasty storms through 2:00. by about 5:00 that line exits and look what happens afterwards. we start to clear things out. a big improvement for central florida. one thing that needs imriewchg -- improving but won't is the boating forecast. boating conditions are rough. don't go out and play. this weekend the sun shines bright but not boating weather because we're talking about chilly temperatures. freeze warnings probably going to be issued sunday morning. more on the forecast in minutes. let's turn things over to traffic. >> here's

left side of the screen, i-4 and altamonte springs, traffic is building. more congestion but it is building. lake mary to lee averaging 12 minutes. on the bottom of the screen we have travel times throughout the show. here's the 5:28 beach line. eastbound on the right side of the screen by the orlando international airport toll plaza. not so bad if you have to travel either direction. 55 miles an hour making that eastbound drive near o.i.a. and westbound as well, things looking pretty good if you have an early morning flight to catch. jason: on sunrise we continue to monitor the blizzard of 2016. michelle: some areas are expecting up to three feet of snow. jason: ice cream lovers, we have a story for you.

you see it there on the top and left of your screen. the storm already creating hundreds of flight cancellations. we have live team coverage all morning right here on sunrise. jason: if you're a fan of ice cream, blue bell will be back on store shelves soon. michelle: the company pulled its products from shelves in april and august after listeria contaminations. blue bell is reintroducing its product in phases, and florida is one of the first to get the ice cream which returns on monday. for now only five flavors being produced. they are butter pecan, cookies n' cream, dutch chocolate, home made vanilla and the great divide which is a combination of the last two. jason: the orlando magic are looking to get on track against the charlotte hornets. the team lost eight of their last night -- nine

>> severe winter weather causing travel delays and cancellations across the country. this morning we have live team coverage for you. we're live at o.i.a. and meteorologist is tracking the storm expected to hit us in the day ahead. thanks for joining wesh 2 news sunrise team. michelle: let's get you to the first alert forecast. we're taking a flight over central florida. we'll get to your traffic report in a morning but first a track of the storms. eric: we're going to be turning i.f.r. later as thunderstorms move in. it's a 90% coverage by lunch time today. it's going to be rapidly getting very, very rainy and rapidly clearing out. it's a quick, fast and in a hurry system. 659:00. lunch time 72 degrees. at this hour our radar, look how quick we've started tracking some of these showers moving in and they extend back to the gulf of mexico for now.

storms moving towards is that florida. that goes along with the of us. from ocala, you're dry. to the south, belleview down i-75, wildwood, villages, leesburg showers are continuing to work through. we'll put a track on towards the east. they're working at 10, miles an hour. we're going to be tracking this over the next couple of minutes time and then moving toward the metro area. to the north where the dynamics are there, that's where we've got a tornado warning in effect for franklin county in northern portions of the panhandle. that's where the severe weather is for central florida standards. it gets in around lunch time today. high temperatures today making it into the 70's. that's a quick check of your forecast. >> quiet drive getting into downtown orlando on i-4 eastbound right here on the right side of the screen. traffic getting in okay if

we'll look at the current travel time in a second. west bownt -- bound on the left side of the screen. congested by moving. right side of the map, eastbound. eastbound john young to colonial five minutes. 55 miles an hour at caylee. it is a good looking commute and i-4 westbound from altamonte to winter park six minutes. jason: emergency crews across our nation are prepping for a storm. this one could dump nearly 30 inches of snow throughout the mid-atlantic michelle: this system has already frozen air travel for airports region. a live look on the west roanoke, virginia. there is a little bit of snowfall in these areas now different later today. this severe weather could have a major impact on airports around the country including right here at

we've seen cancellations throughout the morning. how's it looking right now? >> we have seen cancellations throughout the morning and we're seeing even more pop up. if you look at the board behind me, these are the flight status boards. here at o.i. , and we did see another cancellation pop up. this is a flight to dulles this morning has been canceled. that is dulles in the washington, d.c. area. charlotte and raleigh also on the board here with cancellations. travelers are going to be seeing a lot more of these alerts today. these red cancel statuses, the dreaded red when you get to the airport. it's all because of this dangerous east coast snowstorm. american airlines did say it was canceling all flights today in and out of charlotte and flight aware.com says more than 4,000 flights across the country today and tomorrow have already been scrapped. the focus here, of course,

going to be just a massive headache for people who have been planning to travel and we just talked to a woman here at the orlando airport who lives in charlotte and she said she had to quickly change her flight plans when she found out american was canceling those flights today. >> i'm really grateful to be going on my cruise. i was hoping i would get there and there was some way people kind of missed the flight or something that i could get on so i can get to, at least get to florida and make my way to where i need to get to. >> and she is headed to miami to make that cruise to celebrate her birthday. other people, other travelers who were planning to travel on amtrak. in our area, the auto train that runs from outside of d.c. to sanford is not going to be operating today or tomorrow. of severe weather today, as eric has been telling you. those thunderstorms could also affect flights. we will of course be keeping our eyes on all of these travel alerts.

air and on wesh.com for all your updates. back to you guys. jason: the realities hardest hit by the storm will be getting help from our area. 12 duke energy employees are leaving in about an hour heading for the carolinas to respond to the storm. they'll be driving up several bucket trucks. those trucks will be used to restore power if it gets knocked out. in all duke says they've got 5,000 workers ready to respond including 1,400 from the sunshine state. michelle: that same storm system is getting ready to cause massive problems along the east coast. jason: this is going to bring heavy snow and ice to more than 50 million people this weekend. we continue team coverage with nikole killion in this washington, d.c. report. that's an area that is supposed to see some of the worst conditions. >> things are quiet here now but in a few hours they're all going downhill with the nation's capital officially under a blizzard warning. after an inch of snow crippled the commute -- >> usually takes 20 to 25 minutes.

to five hours now. bracing more. >> i'm declaring a state of >> the nation's capital shutting down from mass government. even the president who had a slippery ride to the white house wednesday, preparing to hunker down. guess is the president will stay warm and toasty here inside the white house. weather service says more than 50 million people will be affected not only by significant snow along the east coast but also ice and freezing rain that's expected from kentucky to the carolinas. >> the cold temperatures and strong winds, and we expect the wind to be very strong with this storm system, especially along the i-95 corridor, will add to the impacts. >> in preparation, thousands of flights are being canceled and folks are stocking up to keep warm. >> honestly, when we're being truthful, the most important thing is wine and whiskey. >> and the storm could take a toll financially. the national weather

it happened on sand lake road near i-4. investigators say the driver of a white toyota corolla ran right into the back of the trooper's s.u.v. that driver was taken into custody on suspicion of d.u.i. the trooper wasn't hurt. >> this morning orange county investigators are trying to piece together the drowning of a toddler. michelle: the three-year-old was found in a pool not breathing. deputies say the toddler wandered out of sight yesterday at the home on elder wood court and fell into the pool. the pool had been drained inside of it. family members and paramedics tried to revive him but it was too late. >> he was very active. he's very active. he fell in the pool. there's a pool in the back. michelle: the child was pronounced dead at arnold palmer hospital. man accused of killing a woman in her downtown someone years before while he was in the air force. prosecutors released hundreds of pages in the investigation of duxbury.

charged with breaking into an apartment in orlando and murdering a woman. one of the documents released details an encounter involving duxbury's time in the military. he said during a poll had i -- polygraph test that he stabbed his ex-wife's boyfriend. we're still going through new information. look for updates on air. >> a teacher under fire this morning for a study in racism. michelle: parents say it is a study that went too far for first grader. just ahead on wesh 2 news

>> good friday morning. the outdoor weather studio on what is a nice, quiet start to the day at least here across the interior. you head into our western areas is where we're tracking showers. watching those storms trying to work in by lunch time. it's 72 degrees. an isolated threat for severe weather. generally widely scattered showers, gusty storms. we could be talking about pretty darned heavy rain. here's a look at that satellite and radar. you can see showers pushing into the i-75 and turnpike corridors. marion, sumter, lake county, eventually west volusia and flagler getting in on the fun. there's that big storm system to our north. that cold front is dragging in these showers and over the course of the day some of those thunderstorms could get heavy as they move into our area. the dynamics are in place so i think as this stuff moves in the strongest stuff should stay to our north. there's lunch time. nasty rains moving through. i'll track it through the weekend and talk about a big chill in a couple of

now let's send things over traffic. >> a crash at bennett road. southbound completely the turn lane to the left. maybe consider using mcgwire boulevard. at the moment it is not a huge flow of traffic that the chopper is over there on bennett road. we're looking at i-4 near the turnpike. this is eastbound and it. things looking pretty good. busier on the westbound side but nothing that will delay you too much. we had a flight over bennett road. this is a virtual one. we're getting into downtown orlando without any delays. no trouble. if you're going to take that drive from the turnpike to colonial it should cost you 8 minutes. jason: 6:44. we're waiting to learn if a lake county teacher will face disciplinary action after backlash from parents. michelle: the teacher split up students for a lesson in racism. the principal of minneola elementary school says the day

king jr. day the first grade teacher conducted an unapproved class experiment. the students were split up by eye color and discriminated against for several hours. the students with blue eyes got hugs and toys while the students with brown eyes got nothing, says a student. >> she only wanted the white people that had blue eyes to get hugs. she said she didn't want any of us. everybody in the class was crying. michelle: the teacher told parents in a letter that the lesson taught the students about equality. jason: we're seeing a new picture of a man wanted for trying to cash in on victims. vms victims say the crook poses as a representative from the bank and is telling them they got a new debit card and need to turn in the old one. at least one card was used in orange county.

homeowners are demanding change to the new garbage collection system. michelle: the orange county plan has gotten off to a rocky start. yesterday we were there as garbage continued to pile up outside of homes on ridge wood avenue. three weeks ago the county started a once a week collection. one homeowner says she's seen just one pickup in that whole time. >> what's your best hope? >> that they pick it up tomorrow and every week like they said on a friday. that's all i know. michelle: most of the country -- most of the county is using new contractors for frash -- trash pickup. 2,000 homes are being missed each week. the county says they are dedicated to find a way to get the system working. super bowl 50 is just around the corner, a little more than two weeks away on february 7. streets near the ferry building are blocked off as workers build. they are putting together projectors to broadcast

watching showers and thunder showers move through and then they clear out. by the time we get into that ride home it's not going to be as much of a factor, spicialg -- especially in our western areas. it will be taking longer to get out here in our eastern areas. generally speaking we're watching midday storms. temperatures upper 50's, lower 60's. first alert doppler radar showing showers moving in. tapping into our tampa radar, heavier pockets of shower activity in the gulf of mexico streaming in through sumter lake and marion county in about an hour's time. now light to precipitation. villages. for now the heavy stuff stays north of leesburg, lake mack back over to sorrento. even new showers developing over saint johns. further to the south leesburg, holly and the

see more rainfall move in. back toward zephyr hills this batch moves towards clairmont within 20 minutes time. the big line of storms still out there. there's a ton of lightning in here. while i think it will gradually weaken as it moves our way, thunder and lightning is certainly a possibility as it moves toward us. another 240 miles or so to move in. areas highlighted in yellow, communities that the national weather service and storm prediction center placed under what's called a slight risk for severe weather meaning we could see an isolated area of strong to severe storms. the good news is that i think the tornado threat is going to stay north of central florida. our severe weather breakdown looks like wind being our big concern. that's going to be the case. storms moving at 40 miles an hour, gusty winds possible. heavy rainfall, hail and tornado threat will remain relatively low. 10 a.m. it starts moving in. on the doorsteps of the

slowdowns westbound getting on to i-4. the big picture from the conway toll plaza to i-4 is going to cost you five minutes. jason: these are the stories making headlines. beginning with an overnight shooting near u.c.f. michelle: that gunman is on the loose. the shooting happened before 11:30 last night at the marky apartments. investigators tell us a 19-year-old man was shot in the back and taken to the hospital. it's not clear what led up to the shooting. jason: we have new information about an overnight crash that involved a trooper in orlando. investigators say juan torres hit the back to have the officer's cruiser around 4 this morning on sand lake road near i-4. troopers tell us torres was arrested for d.u.i. the trooper wasn't hurt. michelle: an argument in orange county took a frightening turn on the streets. deputies say a woman got into an argument with a man at her home yesterday. the man drove away with the woman hanging on to his car. she let go at forest city road when she was hit by another car passing by.

open in volusia county a truck cashed into the bridge near i-4. troopers say the driver of the back part of the dump truck up. that driver was taken to the hospital but is right. michelle: a local college security guard died after a crash on campus. we told you yesterday morning his golf cart was hit by a suspected drunk driver and now he died from his injuries. the driver is held on a $3,400 bond. jason: the former pedi raping a customer could soon learn his fate. a jury begins deliberating in the trial. he says he had sex. michelle: a man stole a wheeler. surveillance shows a man walking into a tent on 4:41 sunday. he rides off on a 1983 honda three wheeler.
