wind gusts and a low threat for tornadoes from late morning through the afternoon and evening commute. right now, it is fairly light rain across flagler county. central florida, much of the area is covered with light rain or moderate rain, where you see the yellows across downtown orlando. several pockets of rain in osceola and polk county. rain is going to continue filling in as we had through the day. we had some thunderstorms earlier in tampa. we will keep an eye out for the possibility of those storms over the next couple of hours. upper 60' s and lower 70' s is where we are heading for highs. we will talk about the timing for those storms later. let' s can a traffic update. ted, it has been messy. ted: we are looking at the five 28 closure eastbound just before state road 407.

state road 520 as the alternate. on to the mess that is i-4, this is weston i-4 at fairbanks avenue. looking beyond fairbanks, a crash blocking two left lanes. between fairbanks and par, two left lanes blocked. here is another crash, eastbound, involving a semi-. right lane blocked on i-4 eastbound. another crash, i-4 eastbound, daytona beach, right around u.s. 92, international speedway boulevard, right lane blocked. on the good side, we do not see delays on the 408. michelle: new from overnight, a man is recovering after coming face to face with a pair of criminals. jason: orange county sheriff' s deputies say he caught them breaking into his truck.

midnight near a home on park that' that' s where alex villareal is live, alex, what happened when the victim confronted these guys? alex: they ran away from him. he chased after them. that is when deputies say he was shot in the leg by these away. it happened here on park commons drive. behind me. it happened when he found these two guys trying to break into his car. the sheriff' s office say they drove off in another vehicle. it happened last night after 11:30. the him sought -- the victim

he tried to catch them after he tried to burn -- after they tried to burglarize them. we do not know the identity of the man who was shot. as soon as we get new details, the investigation is ongoing. live in villareal. michelle: today we expect to learn much more about this wrong-way driver caught on camera. only wesh 2 has this video of the dangerous situation on the beachline. troopers say the man behind the wheel caused two crashes. jazmin walker is here, jazmin, what do we know about the driver so far? jazmin: he is in his 70' s, but he' s got a great driving record. arnold whigham got his florida license in 1999 and hasn' t received a single ticket or infraction. toss the perfect record out the window. tuesday, dot cameras spotted his white gmc pickup heading west on the 528 in the eastbound lanes. it was rush hour. chopper 2 spotted the aftermath as drivers like the one in this

trying to avoid a crash. the expressway authority has alarms to get wrong way drivers to stop and turn around but not where tuesday' s incident happened. they have had these systems in place at hiawassee and the 408, and also on the beachline at 520. they have had approval to put in more, but it will take time. jazmin: no one was seriously hurt. wrong way drivers are not uncommon in central florida. in 2015, they received 130 reports of wrong way drivers. jason: an 80-year-old veteran heads to surgery today, after he was heard by a man who took a bus on a joyride. on monday, herbert doktor was being loaded onto a lynx access

wheel. the driver says she still didn' t have doktor' s wheelchair locked into place. doktor' s daughter says he was thrown around during the short ride. >> she kept saying you' re gonna hurt my patient or kill us and my dad flipped out of the wheel chair. jason: she says her father suffered a bleed on the brain, and a broken hip from the ordeal. rene burgos was arrested on kidnapping, robbery, and carjacking charges. michelle: we have calls in to deputies this morning to find out if any arrests will be made in the shooting death of a marion county man. 32-year-old richard hutchinson junior was killed yesterday at a home on northeast 167th street in the ocala national forest. detectives say a family friend shot hutchinson after an argument. lieutenant robbins: but the family member inside did indicate they felt threatened which caused a shot to be fire.

sheriff' s office says the family is cooperating with investigators. jason: new information this morning about the deadly turn in that weeks-long standoff in oregon. the fbi arrested eight protesters, including their leader, ammon bundy. overnight, the fbi identified the man killed in a shootout as lavoy finicum. agents say finicum and bundy' s brother refused to surrender. agents say they aren' t sure who fired the first shots. all of the suspects are now facing federal conspiracy charges for the protest over federal land rights. michelle: we are tracking lots of rain. you will need the umbrella. jason: let' s get to amy. amy: the pavement is wet. most of the rain is light. we will see quite a few thunderstorms. upper 60' s, lower 70' s. it will be fairly warm.

this morning on the today show. jason: we' ve just learned an elementary school principal in indianapolis gave her life to save students from an out-of-control school bus. principal susan jordan was seen pushing the kids out of the way when the bus suddenly jumped the curb yesterday. 210-year-olds -- two 10- year-olds were seriously hurt. jordan died from her injuries last night. the mayor of indianapolis spoke to the grieving community. >> we cannot express deeply enough all of indianapolis feels . jason: the driver says she is not sure what caused the bus to suddenly accelerate. michelle: happening today, a controversial plan to temporarily shut off niagara falls, is up for public discussion. state leaders in new york say two 115-year-old pedestrian bridges need to be replaced. to do it, the water on the u.s. side of the falls would have to be redirected to canadian side, while the work is done. tonight' s hearing has been moved to a nearby convention center,

expected. jason: right now, a state of emergency has been declared for residents along the northern california coastline. it was issued after the wet el nino weather caused major erosion to the area leaving some apartments hanging off a cliff. some of the buildings have been declared unliveable, but some residents are defying the order to leave. strong storms left behind not only a battered coastline but also a sinkhole and a trail of destruction. michelle: if you are just waking up with us and you can hear the rain, it has been out through amy: get up and get moving. you need to leave early. we have had several accidents. morning, make sure they are ready for the rain. rain.

temperatures in the mid to upper 60' s. you can see there are two different things going on. this is the initial rain ahead of the cold front. it is going to take two days to clear the area. we will have rain tonight and again tomorrow. we have an area of low pressure. that low is going to help provide the energy to fire up strong to severe wind gusts. by late morning for lunchtime, will form. the yellow dollar that you see,

the plastic surgeon says the cosmetic crook stole about $20,000 worth of products. >> they came exactly knowing what they wanted. we had iphones, we had computers, none of those things were touched. they came straight for the refrigerator where we have our botox. michelle: detectives are hoping someone will help them fill in the blanks to find the guy. jason: new on sunrise, an employee of a key west bar is suing backstreet boys singer nick carter. skylar carden says carter struck and punched him during a fight at the bar earlier this month that resulted in carter' s arrest. an attorney for caden says a jury will decide the amount of damages in the lawsuit. new this morning, the nfl has confirmed it is investigating the doping allegations against peyton manning. the league opened an investigation after an al jazeera documentary accused him of using human growth hormone. that intern behind the allegations later admitted he lied. manning denies using hgh. the nfl says the investigation will not be finished before manning leads his broncos into

we are going to get to amy sweezey in just a second but first alex villareal is live outside right now. alex: we have had the umbrella out all morning and we have needed it. foggy is exactly -- soggy is what we are experiencing out here. it has been coming down ever since we got out here earlier this morning. i can always tell the weather by my hair. it is definitely rainy. the big question is when is this rain going to stop? >> not today, not tonight, not even tomorrow. by friday, it will go a. -- away. a couple rumbles of thunder, nothing severe.

we have got a lot of clouds, a lot of rain pouring in through the day. it is warm now, mid to upper 60' s in most spots. we will climb into the upper 60' s-lower 70' s. the initial rain coming through now and then our cold front is still back to the west of us. this front and an area of low pressure are going to move through here in the next several hours. wind gusts will happen starting late morning. right now, light rain in flagler, volusia, where you see the green it is very light rain. through downtown shower. a break in a couple spots but for the most part, most of soggy mess. -- soggy mess --

we are going to talk more about the timing of our storms as they move through and who can see a low chance of a tornado today in just a few minutes. it is 6:32, here is ted. ted: it hasn' t stopped just yet. you can see from our shot, i-4 westbound into downtown orlando. in between ivanhoe boulevard and colonial drive we have a crash blocking a lane and it is westbound. we have a crash on i-4 eastbound locking a right plane involving a semi-. approach on john young near obt, be prepared for that. international speedway boulevard in volusia county, another crash blocking a light -- right lane. around the area of mile marker 241 we have a crash blocking a right lane.

the five beach line expressway which is now reopened. you can see this picture from brevard county fire rescue from the semi crash that had shut down eastbound. it is only affecting and eastbound left lane. i westbound from the seminal west area -- rest area -- i-4 westbound from seminole rest area. michelle: the search is on for a pair of thieves who shot a man who caught them in the act. jason: the victim saw them breaking into his truck. let' s get back out to alex villareal, live at that scene. alex: well, the burglars reaction was to run from this man when he caught them but he was actually shot when he ran after them. it all happened here on park

the man was taken to the hospital after he was shot. he is expected to survive. his gunshot wounds are not life-threatening and he was listed in stable condition at the hospital. the sheriff' s office says they drove off in another vehicle. it started just after 11:30 when the victim, 30 years old, saw this strangers trying to break into his car. they ran away when he confronted them and he ran after them and that is when they shot him. we are going to be working to find out more about what happened and why this man did used to run after these two burglars. deputies have not released any information about the people they are now looking for. we are working to learn the identity of the man who was shot. we will bring those straight to you both here on air and on

jason: we are working to find out what led to this deadly wreck on i-95 in flagler county. you can see in this footage, an suv crunched up in front of that tractor-trailer. once we get more information we will bring it to you. michelle: two people charged with beating a pair of deputies. jazmine: this started with a domestic disturbance call. these deputies showed up to the house in brevard county and ended up in the hospital. these two people are responsible. skylar francis and courtney johnson. the call came in near u.s. one. the suspects were fighting in the backyard and deputies tried to break it up. francis pulled out a collapsible baton and beat the deputies with it. the deputy had to be airlifted to holmes regional medical center.

the hospital. >> we are not sure what started the disturbance. our general crimes unit is continuing to investigate. our thoughts right now are just on the safety of our two deputies. >> the deputies are expected to be ok. michelle: there is now a statewide search underway for a three-year-old boy who may be on the run with his mother and her convict boyfriend. this is xander quigley, believed to be with gary bullock junior. they believe the boy' s mother, natasha quigley, helped bullock get away. sandra' s information was -- sanders information was entered into the crime registry. jason: 340 evidence photos were

it started in july of 2014 -- 2013. they will cut the ribbon at 3:30 this afternoon inside the world center of racing, celebrating the major effort to finish this massive project. then it is on to the racing. daytona take screen saturday afternoon. fans will get an entirely different nascar experience. >> it is great to stand on the podium in general that it would be hard to pass for her five years. i feel good about this year. getting to visit florida in its own race. jason: race officials calling this the first motorsports stadium. a race this weekend and next month the daytona 500 on february 21.

breaking news in the new orleans area. this is from our affiliate w dsu there. there has been a massive fire and this is not far from that area where you would go on canal street. if you are familiar with the new orleans area you will know this location. >> this is right outside the french corridor. one person is believed to be in the building. there is a massive response and expected alarm fire. we will it you know the latest. jason: covering volusia county, film students -- students will be waiting to see if they will be wearing uniforms. teachers say the new policy will alleviate bullying issues and and their policing of the dress code.

right now, green color is light rain and the yellow is more moderate showers and there are several areas where we are seeing those showers. there is still a cold front to our west that is on its way here in the next several hours and it is a cold front and an area of low pressure for here that is going to bring the potential for strong-severe wind gusts. there is a low threat of an isolated tornado as well. right now, just some rain. flagler county, volusia county, much of central florida seeing -- light to moderate showers. into southern lake and more than polk, the i-4 corridor and into brevard along i-95 we are dealing with this rain and it will continue for the entire day. we will get a break here before

roll in, but our biggest concern is for those 58 mile-per-hour winds or greater. and that low possibility of an isolated tornado. we cannot rule that out because the winds in the upper atmosphere are adding to that. by noon we will see those thunderstorms rolling into our northern area so between 10 and noon is the timing. in the metro area from noon to three, and then continue pushing over to brevard county. once the strongest storms and, we will see quite a bit of rain as we head into the late-night, overnight, and tomorrow. temperatures will climb but we are only going to be in the upper 60' s-lower 70' s. tomorrow, we will see that front slowly drifting through, which means more rain tomorrow

breaks and a lot of cloud cover. cooler temperatures continues into the weekend. pictures from yesterday -- it is celebrate literacy week. i had the opportunity to talk to some kids in oak park elementary school about literacy and the importance of reading. we talked about whether as well . i spoke to the first and second graders. all my new friends in titusville, brevard county at oak park elementary. ted. roads 17. forcing traffic to the right shoulder and it is now talking about a mile backup on state road 417 southbound. that is just beginning to talk about the troubles.

what you are looking at is eastbound. this is a crash involving a semi-in orange blossom trail. we have one on i-4 eastbound and volusia county, a right lane is locked there. into downtown orlando it is one big trunk -- chunk of traffic due to accidents both east and west bound. beach line expressway eastbound, still a bit slow. we -- we have it blocking a lane. by 4:36, you might want to consider university boulevard. jason: an overnight shooting in orlando. michelle: he was shot by two thieves he caught red-handed. he confronted the crux as they broke into his car overnight on park commons drive. the guy was shot while chasing them.
