on stage? jason: start your engine. that's what we heard at the new daytona speedway. michelle: we made it through the week. we are sitting under cloud cover but this is going to change in the days ahead. amy is here to break it down. >> the two days of rain that we've had moving on out and now the dry air is coming in, which means we will get some sunshine for your friday. sunrise doesn't happen until 7:16. once we get to sunrise we will start seeing more sun especially farther north. as the clouds clear we'll get more sun farther south. temperatures today mid 60's, upper 60's. not quite back to normal. here's our temperatures now. we have dropped to 46 in ocala where the skies have cleared and the temperatures are falling. 48 now in the villages

49 leesburg. we're 54 in orlando, still at 58 in melbourne. the wind out of the northwest, a bit breezy this morning and clouds are pushing south. you can see how they started to clear to the north and they will keep clearing as we head through the next few hours. 65 is where we're headed in ocala and the villages today. 66 in clairmont. 67 orlando and winter park. along the coast we will climb into the mid to upper 60's. 66 new smyrna beach and 68 in palm bay. it is 6:02. let's get a traffic update. >> we'll get a peek at i-4, westbound on the right side of the screen. it's looking pretty good, no delays outside of our studio on i-4. on the 408, very busy starts at 6:00 hour. not there yet, only a 4

we still have construction in deebt -- daytona beach on i-95 south where a left lane is blocked. jason: we're waiting to find out more about a body discovered down the road from a burning house. michelle: it was on river drive off ocean shore boulevard. alex, what do we know so far? >> michelle, this is a very unusual situation. we know it all started with a 911 call from a neighbor who reported seeing flames coming out of the window of this house. the damage is extensive. the entire inside of the house looks to be very well burned. the windows are shattered here. it's blackened by soot at the top. just a lot of damage that we're able to see just standing owd here right now. deputies responding to the fire say they saw a man running from the area and then heard a popping sound.

he was dead. volusia county sherrif's office says at this point it looks like he killed himself, but they say they are investigating all circumstances. also being investigated here is this fire. the battalion chief on scene says the fire marshal is looking into possible arson. it is still unclear how this man may have been connected to the fire but we do know that it had an impact on fire fighters' work to get the flames out. >> we had to deter units. the engine had to actually turn around and come from a different direction because the road was blocked by the incident. >> despite those delays, fire fighters say the fire was put out quickly. but 20% of the home was lost. we are going to continue to follow this investigation for you. we still have a lot of unanswered questions here. as soon as we get new details, we will bring those straight to you both here on air

wesh.com. michelle: this morning investigators want to know how much money a security guard may have taken from hotel guests near disney. orange county sherrifs say they caught edward cespedes in a sting. undercover deputies put $500 on a night stand and say they saw him take him. the manager at the hotel says $10,000 has been reported missing in 20 thefts over the last year. but so far edward cespedes has only been charged with the one theft caught on camera. hotel guests say they were surprised to hear it was an employee taking the cash. >> you trust in those people really. you think they're there to look after you. >> we're always putting stuff in the safe. we use the safe. we don't leave things lying around. michelle: edward cespedes has been bonded out of jail. jason: the red cross is helping a marion county family after a fire destroyed their home. these pictures show flames

that home last night. the flames engulfed much of the house. the mom and her four kids were not at home at the time. the cause is still under investigation. michelle: in commitment 2016, reaction poured in all night after last night's republican debate and donald trump's competing event that he said will draw more attention. we're still waiting on the ratings but on facebook ted cruz was the most talked about. on twitter, no surprise, trump was number one. >> look at all the cameras, like the academy awards. >> side by side, donald trump's veteran fund-raiser. >> isn't that better than this debate that's going on? >> during the fox news debate where candidates mocked his absence. >> i'm a maniac and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat, and ugly. >> he's an entertaining guy, the greatest show on earth. >> a little teddy bear to me. >> i kind of miss him. i wish he was here.

the f.b.i. says it expects the oregon wildlife refuge standoff to end soon. the traffic stop that led to the death of one of the protesters. drive around a roadblock but got stuck in a snowbank. he got shot when he reached into a pocket to get a loaded handgun. >> the world health organization is sounding the alarm about the rapid spread of zika virus in more than 20 countries. >> the world health organization is holding an emergency meeting to discuss the zika virus. 4,200 babies now born with this unusual condition in which they have unusually we are expecting now millions of people to contract zika this year the question becomes what about the united states? might we see mosquitoes carrying zika alive at u.s.

a chilly, wet morning will give way to a warmer, sunnier day. downtown orlando 56 now. amy's tracking it all in your friday morning first alert forecast. it's friday morning and we're back in just minutes on sunrise. michelle: investigators are looking into how a man found near a house fire died. volusia county deputies say a man was running on the scene around midnight. they say his death appears to be a suicide. they don't know the cause of the fire. jason: disney is facing a lawsuit after a snake bite. the family claims the snake fell on an eight-year-old boy and bit him in 2014. his grandmother went into cardiac arrest and later died. disney says it did offer the family help but they refused it. >> neighbors say they're being terrorized by pit bulls. michelle: six violations are pending against the owners.

killed her cat. >> the woman said she tried everything she could to stop the dogs from attacking her cat on the front porch but they wouldn't stop. the pit bulls have been taken away from the neighborhood which is in edgewater. now they're being kept in a shelter under a nuisance hold. many in the city say this is far from the first incident. a neighborhood facebook page shows hundreds of posts about the dogs describing other violent run-ins. >> they just run the neighborhood at will. they have -- i understand there has been a lot of damage, a lot of animals. they've even gone adults. it's time that it stopped. >> we do know the owner was cited for this recent mauling and faces several hundred dollars in fines for the animal violation. animal control will decide whether the dogs are a danger to the neighborhood. jason: the orange county sherrif will be meeting with the aclu to discuss allegations of racially

this report claims black drivers in florida are ticketed for seat belt violations nearly twice as often as white drivers. the sherrifs department said in this statement the orange county sherrif's office continually reevaluates its policies, procedures and operations to ensure they are consistent with best practices. business owners say they're tired of being a prime artists. shops and stores have been taggers up to 40 times in the last few months. the cost to remove the graffiti is running into the thousands of dollars. last november orlando police arrested two men for earlier work in the area. they now believe they're dealing with two new taggers. jason: three local school administrators are competing to be named the best in florida. rhonda hunt principal of eustis heights is eligible.

chad frazier from eustis heights elementary. candidates were nominated by superintendents and winners will be named next month. >> students across central florida are celebrating literacy week. yesterday i was a mystery reader in seminole county. two teachers invited me to read to their students. we had a blast with the book. very interactive. a whole lot of fun. michelle: it was interactive. jason: parents, you've got to read this one to they will love it. not so much a calming story. afternoon entertaining reading. >> can you read it without say you have to yell here? jason: there are animated parts where things happen. you turn the book to the left and all the dots on the page are on the left side. then you shake the book and it's like whoa! it gets very exciting.

it's going to be a good weekend; right? >> yes, we have the sunshine coming back. we're in the process of getting rid of the clouds now. we had two days of rain and now we're finally getting a break which is great, i think. i know the rain is so beneficial. it helps out our lawns and gardens but look at all this rain. we had more than an inch in winter haven and sanford. cocoa beach picked up half an inch yesterday. this is on top of the couple of inches a lot of us got on wednesday with the rain. melbourne picked up three quarters of an inch yesterday. that added to what we had the rest of the month, means we had the second wettest january on record this year with almost 8 inches of rain. we got beat out in 1979 with a little more than 8 inches of rain. this is since we've been keeping records in the 1800's. this morning as you get the kids to school we still have clouds but they are working their way out. another hour to go before sunrise. it is cooler and it's breezy this morning.

low to mid 50's. let me show you some of the numbers as the clouds clear out, the places that are clear, the temperatures are dropping quickly. now we're down to 45 in ocala. 48 in the villages. orlando has dropped to 53. sanford at 52. melbourne still at 57 with a little more cloud cover there. the clouds will keep pushing south. dry air will come in. not only will we get sunshine, we are going to have a lot lower humidity today. no more rain as we head into the weekend. mid to upper 60's where we're headed for highs. 65 ocala and the villages. 66 in eustis, also in clairmont. we'll hit 66 today in long wood. orlando, winter park, st. cloud headed to 67. along the coast mid to upper 60's. cooler to the north, warmer to the south. 6 for you today in palm bay. zora fest going on in the eatonville area all around the next several days into the weekend and next week.

pretty cool in the morning in the 40's but with lots of sunshine, we will climb as we head through the day. tomorrow looks great. right around 70 degrees for the high. keep the humidity nice and low. on sunday we will climb just a little bit into the mid 70's but still have lots of sun, couple of clouds. we're dry over the weekend. things look great as we head through monday as well. we're back in the 80's on tuesday. our next front will arrive wednesday-thursday. that will be our next best opportunity for some showers and storms. >> it's looking great on the 528 express way, this is westbound, that is 417, about 70 miles an hour to pass by the 417 area. westbound on the right, 55 miles an hour approaching the airport toll plaza pretty much right where it should be. westbound getting from seminole county into orange county on i-4, lake mary to lee, 11 minutes.

drier air is coming in. cooler air is breezy, and our temperatures will top out in the mid to upper 60's. warmer. of course yesterday morning we were dealing with a lot of clouds and even some rain. today we have dropped much more and tomorrow morning will be even colder as we 30's in some of our northern spots. 45 right now in ocala, 48 in the villages where clouds have been clearing. we've dropped to 50 in daytona beach. 53 melbourne. we still have cloud cover to the south but you can see more scattered clouds across the metro area and clearing out to the north across flagler and marion counties. temperatures today will make it to the mid 60's off to the north, 66 today in belleview. we'll top out in 67 in water ford lakes. 66 in sanford and deltona. at the coast mid 60's to the north, upper 60's to the south. we'll talk more about your

now let's get a traffic update. >> a report of a crash on the east side of orange county on university boulevard at ralphs road. possible injuries so we are keeping an eye on that one. most of our congested areas on i-4 and 408 looking pretty good. no delays yet from john young to colonial. you can see into downtown orlando on the right side with ease and the 408 over i-4 looking pretty good. that westbound drive into downtown, 4 minutes to the toll plaza. deputies responding to a fire found a body nearby. michelle: alex is live on the scene. what are you finding out? alex: we just saw family members arrive here. they do not want to speak to us of course on camera. this is a very tragic, tragic time for them. we did see them go into the

they have been surveying the damage. we talked to a family friend here who said that the man lived in this house. the man, that deputies say was found dead down the road. the battalion chief out here says it started with a neighbor calling 911 just before midnight saying that flames were coming out of the home, out of a window and looking at the house, you can see that it is badly damaged. when deputies got out here they saw a man running from the area and then heard a popping sound, and when they got to him he was dead. the volusia county sherrif's office says at this point his death appears to be a suicide, but they say they are investigating all circumstances. also being investigated here is the fire. no one was in the house when fire fighters arrived. the battalion chief on scene says the fire marshal is looking into possible arson here. it's still unclear how the man may have been connected to

friend out here that he did live in this home with his brother, and we do know that this incident, the deputies finding hip in the road did delay fire fighters to get the flames out but they were still able to get the fire out quickly. still a lot of unanswered questions here today, but it is just a tragic morning for family members and friends out here. jason: this morning disney is facing a lawsuit. the family of an eight-year-old boy claims the child was bitten by a animal kingdom and that led to a death in the family. >> the family was visiting from alabama in october 2014 and says a large snake escaped at animal kingdom, fell from a tree on to that eight-year-old boy and bit him. the family alleges the boy's grandmother saw the whole thing happen and went into cardiac arrest. she died a short time later. disney says it doesn't know

grandmother but in a statement said during the visit a nonvenomous snake bit the boy. the snake was not part of our collection. the nurse at first aid in animal kingdom cleaned the wound and the family declined emergency treatment. disney says the family returned to the park after that bite was cleaned. the family's lawyer says they are going to file a wrongful death lawsuit in the death of the grandmother, and they also plan to sue for the boy's alleged injuries. michelle: new on sunrise, a scam alert you need to know about. the volusia county sherrif's office says someone pretending to work for the department is calling people in the area. the scammer claims there is a warrant out for their arrest and they need to pay money to clear it up. an 81-year-old victim was scammed out of $5,500. if you get a call like this, call the sherrif's office immediately. >> new information this morning about how three inmates in california escaped. a teacher who worked at the maximum security jail in santa ana now accused of

investigators say the 44-year-old gave them google maps of the jail and other materials. a week ago after cutting through the metal and crawling through they have not been caught. jason: in commitment 2016 this friday morning, get back out on the campaign trail. last night they took the stage in des moines for debate on the fox news channel without their frontrunner. >> one of the topics of the night, immigration. another topic, donald trump's absence. >> i kind of miss donald trump. he was a little teddy bear to me. >> with no donald trump at last night's g.o.p. debate on fox news channel. >> he's an entertaining guy. >> candidates took jabs at the republican frontrunner and at each other. >> the last four questions please attack ted cruz, marco please attack ted, chris please attack ted. >> immigration became one

and seeing a bumpleg of westbound -- bunch of westbound delays starting. time for that westbound journey on i-4 through downtown orlando that's what is waiting for you. a crash near state route 417, a lane blocked there. another one in east orange county on university boulevard at ralph. that could be blocking a lane by the intersection. jason: 6:44. a man will learn his fate today. michelle: last summer he broke into a woman's house and slashed her house. >> this is 48-year-old douglas reed not only accused of slashing a woman's throat but trying to smother her. he's been in jail since november. the victim was outside taking care of her lawn when she realized someone broke into her home. when she went inside deputies say reed cut her throat and tried to kill her. the woman ran outside to

for help. a neighbor called 911 when she saw her friend bleeding at her door. >> i just was freaking out. i was freaking out. i was crying and i thought she was going to die on me because of all the blood that was coming out. >> reed is facing several charges including attempted murder. he pled guilty to some of the charges in november. we know the mother of reed's two children has written letters asking for the judge to grant leniency and also explaining some of his criminal history. reed will be sentenced at 9:00 this morning. michelle: this video captures the moment a sunrail train crashed into a car on the tracks in seminole county. michelle: you can hear the moment the train collided with the car on the tracks at monroe street in sanford wednesday night. that is when witnesses started calling 911. >> 911, do you need police, fire or medical?

sure, maybe all three. i'm sitting here at orange boulevard by the -- by the sanford exit at the railroad crossing. there's a car on the railroad tracks and a train just hit it. michelle: the train was empty at the time and no one in that car was hurt. jason: happening today, you can meet the orlando city lions. the team will be making a big announcement. you can be there for it. orlando city is hosting its first appearance for 2016. the team's president and captain will be on hand. there will be food trucks and the orlando city kickin' cruiser. the event begins this evening at 5 at the lake nona townster. -- town center. two players have been selected to play in the rising star challenge, an exhibition game featuring rookies and second year players. congrats to those two magic players.

on sunday night. >> you made it to the end of the work week. friday is here and the weekend is shaping up to be great. michelle: amy, you promised good weather this weekend. >> we had to make it through days of rain. we've done it. we've dealt with the puddles and now we get sunshine to return. two days of rain brought us an inch, two inches, even three and a half inches of rain wednesday and thursday in sanford. we set some records and we added to our monthly totals. it's been a wet january yen way because we've had several events that have come through. for daytona beach we're actually the third wettest on record this year with more than seven inches of rain. notice not that far away

place, back in the 1970's and 1980's, we've been keeping records sin the 1800's. this is pretty significant for us this month. we are going to dry out and no more rain for the month of january right through the weekend. we wait until tuesday of next week which of course is february when we see a slight chance for some rain. right now here's the temperatures. it is cool, it is breezy. the colder air is coming in behind our front, and the skies are clearing, so we are at 45 now in ocala, 46 in the villages. dropped to 49 in leesburg, 50 daytona beach. orlando made it to 53 and melbourne 56. we're going to get sunshine in about a half-hour, about sunrise. clouds are clearing out at the same time. those of you that are clear you'll get lots of sun. still clouds to the south. as those clouds clear we'll start getting a little more sun in our southern counties as well. cool, dry air keeps coming in today so we will end up mostly sunny.
