ll tell you why coming up. but first, let' s get over to first alert meteorologist amy sweezey with a look at the forecast. amy: the sun will come back today. it will not be total, blue sky sunshine. it will look a little grey at first. once the dry air moves in, it will not aside our cloud cover. we will then have mostly sunny skies great it will bring our temperatures up, even warmer than yesterday. we are heading into the upper 70' s, even 80' s. i' m not seeing a lot of fogginess on her visibility map. over the next two hours, we may see some low cloudiness going on. 54 degrees at the palm coast right now. 51 in leesburg and sanford. 50 degrees daytona beach. 52 in orlando and melbourne.

some small, hit and miss showers may be happening. overall, not much rain going on. there is a little bit. most of the bigger rain is off to our south. that is where it will stay today. 79 will be our high in ocala and the villages. we would hit 80 in orlando and winter park. up and down the coast, it will s as let' s get a traffic update. ted noah is standing by. ted: the choppers are flying right now over orange county. they are on their way to a bad crash at the intersection of the road and edgewater drive. but we are hearing is that it is in the intersection, blocking two lanes. if you' re going to be traveling on the road this morning, you might want to consider obt as an alternate for edgewater. the overall stretch into

parkway to colonial is a short five minute commute. that is right where it should be. 408 westbound, no delays just yet. michelle: right now, crews are taking down the oldest toll plaza on the beachline. jason: it' s expected to ease traffic on the morning commute. alex villareal is there live. alex, how is this going to help? alex: you are not going to be paying any less money here. but because of you when i could beat hang the toll at this plaza, it will save you time. it will illuminate some of those nasty traffic jams that drivers have complained about. take a look at the big signs up now. they say "thru traffic only. " this is the only toll plaza on the 109 mile system without an express lane. it is also the second busiest. it handles about 75,000 vehicles a day. that expense all the traffic mess we see here.

set. the shootings happened at another desk at a number of different apartment complexes in southwest and northeast sides of the city. one man says, he was inside his home and woke up to the gunfire. >> i just don' t understand what' s going on back here, but this is the second time it' s happened. michelle: officers are trying to determine if the drive-bys are connected to a shooting that left one man injured on northwest 16th street saturday. jason: covering orange county. the tourist district is dealing with a wave of car break-ins. over the weekend, the windows of dozens of vehicles were smashed. brett connolly is here with new details about the thefts. brett? brett: this was a smash and grab job that moved quickly. it left a trail of debris. thieves broke into 32 cars in orange county' s tourist district overnight.

monumental movieland hotel on i-drive, canada drive hotel and suites, and the country inn and suites on universal boulevard. burglars smashed the windows of cars to get inside. some guests became even more frustrated, after dealing with hotel management. have here says that they' re not responsible for anything. they said that they have the insurance, that covers any kind of liability that happens outside. they' form, and then they' re throwing them away in the garbage cans right behind the counter as soon as you walk away. i saw them throw three papers away, and they refused to give us a copy of our paperwork. brett: we checked and, in florida, public lodging operators are not liable for property loss unless it was their fault, or it happened because they were negligent. managers at all three hotels aren' t commenting. michelle? michelle: in seminole county, a second person is facing charges in the rape of a 13-year-old girl. officers in longwood say, jaime popowski didn' t do enough to

the attack. walter ambrose was arrested more than a week ago for the rape. he is a registered sexual predator. popowski is charged with aggravated child neglect, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. jason: now to a developing story in virginia. police arrested a second virginia tech student in the death of a 13-year-old girl. nicole lovell disappeared from her home in blacksburg, virginia last week. david eisenhauer and natalie marie keepers are now charged with her abduction and murder. >> 19-year-old natalie marie keepers has been charged by blacksburg police with felony count of improper disposal of a body, and one misdemeanor count of accessory after the fact in the commission of a felony. jason: lovell' s remains were found in north carolina. police don' t know how or why she was killed. this morning, gainesville police are trying to figure out how a university of florida student fell six stories to his death. they say, surveillance video shows 20-year-old chance wolf

partition, in an apartment complex near campus yesterday. his body was found in a courtyard. police do not suspect foul play. michelle: 6:09 now on your monday morning. jason: it is the first day of february. a monday. we are really going to heat it up here. let' s get over to amy with your forecast. amy: it is all thanks to that sunshine. yesterday, we made it back to the lower 70' s in most spots. we stayed socke d in with that cloud cover all day long. today, we should see the cloud cover break up a little more today. it should help our temperatures climb into the upper 70' s, near 80' s and most of the area. right now, it is 59 degrees in ocala. 60 at daytona beach. 62 in orlando and melbourne. clouds are rolling through. a couple struggles are possible here and there.

>> you are watching wesh 2. jason: right now. crews are working to demolish one of oldest toll plazas in central florida. starting today, you don' t have to stop at the airport toll plaza. the toll will now be collected at four, new toll plazas that have been built on nearby, beachline ramps. michelle: in just hours, the first votes in the 2016 election will be cast in iowa. candidates from both parties are focusing on the first-time voters and undecided voters. we have team coverage in des moines, bringing you the latest throughout the morning. jason: here at home, and man accused of killing a horse in volusia county will go on trial today. he intentionally drove into a group of writers last week. injuring one of the writers, and

-- injuring one of the riders, and killing a horse. jason: covering orange county. a wrinkle in the plans for a new elementary school in the audobon park area. michelle: construction has been delayed. jazmin walker has a look at what' s holding things up. jazmin? jazmin: it' s mother nature. right now, the ground at the construction site won' t support a new school. so they' re delaying the opening for one year, from 2017 to 2018. the school site is on falcon drive. the district did a first round of soil testing last spring and didn' t find any issues, but deeper tests found something called "muck." it' s an organic material that can be squashed under the weight of heavy structures and cause buildings to sink. they didn' t find any muck near a previously-known sinkhole. the district has two options. re-design the site plan to avoid those unsuitable areas, and/or improve the soil. they' re still going ahead with plans to demolish the old school buildings, and prepare the site in the coming weeks. audubon park and glenridge students, zoned for the new school, will stay at their current school sites for the extra year. there' s a meeting about the changes tonight at 6:00 p.m. at audobon park elementary.

new steps are being taken to make the water in flint drinkable. hundreds of plumbers began volunteering yesterday, to start replacing faucets and installing water filters in homes throughout the city. residents have been depending on bottled water since the city switched the water system to the flint river, which corroded the tap water. jason: thousands of floridians could soon lose their government food stamps. that' s because work requirements, that had been suspended, are back in effect. they apply to anyone considered able-bodied between 18-years-old and 49-years-old, with no dependents. anyone receiving food stamps must work, volunteer, or attend classes at least 80 hours a month. michelle: billions of dollars are up for grabs for college students, who are eligible for financial aid. a new report from nerd-wallet.com found, american students failed to claim $2.7 billion in grant money last year. financial experts say, most students simply don' t fill out the federal financial aid application. in florida, students left $167

table. jason: gas prices are continuing to slide, but that could be changing soon. according to aaa, regular slid three cents in just the past week alone in the orlando area. it will cost you an average of $1.74 a gallon for regular. in daytona beach, filling up will cost a bit more at $1.82 a gallon. but, analysts say, we could see increases in february, as oil prices begin to rebound. it seems like our temperatures are rebounding as well today. we are going to hit 80 in a few spots today. amy: you get people complaining that it is too hot, too hot. bring us the cold weather. but now, we are going to have some rather happy people. michelle: that' s right. amy: we are never going to be able to please everybody here. the good news is that we are going to be back in the 70' s, near 80' s today. we will see some 60' s again, and some rain in the later half of

starting out, a few of us are in the 60' s. there is a lot of cloud cover, like we had yesterday morning. we are starting off a little gray and gloomy. it is warmer. the sunshine will return in the next couple of hours. we are still an hour away from sunrise. so far, we have dropped into the mid-to upper 50' s, near 60' s. that is quite a bit warmer than our average, low temperatures. we are about 10 degrees warmer than that average. we are about 10 degrees warmer than we were yesterday morning. beach. we are at 59 right now in ocala. are headed. again, well above average. upper 70' s to around 80' s. we have cloud cover rolling through right now. some high clouds and a few the question.

right now, crews are taking down a traffic causing toll plaza on the beach line. it is going to make your commute to lead to international airport -- it is going to make your commute to orlando international airport a little bit smoother. alex: it is going to be a big changer on the 528. you are no longer going to have to pay a toll at the airport toll plaza. as you said, the entire plaza is going away. it is going to be demolished. take a look at the signs up now. it says, "thru traffic only, do not stop." through here. you will still play -- pay the toll at some other plazas along the beach line. drivers have complained that this is the only trouble plaza does not

with 75,000 the eagles driving through here each day. -- vehicles driving through here every day. you are asked to still drive carefully as you pass through here, as the toll plaza is still up. it should make driving on the 528 more convenient, safer, and more efficient. the entire project should be completed by the summer. live in orlando, alex villareal, wesh 2 news. jason: troopers in volusia county say, a string of events lead to the death of a biker and a woman, who tried to help him. the biker crashed sunday morning on u.s. highway one in port orange. troopers say, 33-year-old tina martin of port orange saw the crash, and got out of her car to help the victim. that' s when they say, two other cars came along and crashed into martin and the biker, killing both of them. also in volusia county. deputies are now waiting on autopsy results for a man found dead near a brush fire. 52-year-old malcolm rule'

was discovered saturday, near the budget inn on east new york avenue near deland. deputies say, they were in that same area the night before, when they got a call that rule built a fire and had been sleeping on a nearby bench. michelle: happening today. a man goes on trial in volusia county, accused of a killing a horse. exactly one year ago today, prosecutors say christoper todd intentionally drove into a group of riders. wesh 2' s brett connolly has the story. brett: good morning. this case begins with jury selection today. todd has pleaded not guilty. he still faces three charges, including battery with a deadly weapon. this was near spring state park, where three people were riding horses. one rider claimed that todd raced down the road, very near the group.

riders claimed that he was intentionally driving close, which hit and killed one of the horses. here is a 911 call from one of the riders on that day. >> he drove right around, close by. it was intentional. all because i called him [b eep]. brett: todd has been sitting in jail for the last couple of months. he violated his bond, in charges for the death of the horse, when he was arrested with marijuana in his car back in december. jason: all right brett. thank you. we' re expecting to learn more information today about a carjacking suspect, shot by orlando police. danielle evans is charged with armed carjacking, and aggravated fleeing and eluding. police say, they had to open fire, when evans crashed a stolen car into multiple cruisers on friday. a surveillance camera, near bumby avenue and south street, captured the car trying to drive off as officers approached.

questioned and released. michelle: happening today. the world health organization could declare the zika virus a public health emergency. there are reports of zika in nearly two dozen countries. the mosquito-borne virus has already been linked to birth defects in south america. here in the u.s., the cdc is advising pregnant women to avoid traveling there. a vaccine is in the works, but it could take years to develop. jason: isis is now claiming responsibility for a triple-bombing that killed at least 50 people in syria. explosions rocked a suburb of damascus, sunday near syria' s holiest shiite shrine. a syrian monitoring group says one of the targets was a bus , carrying a shiite militia. the country' s foreign ministry estimates an overall 100 people were hurt. iran' s supreme leader is rewarding the commanders who captured two boats full of american sailors. they' re getting a rare military honor for what the ayatollah

as you may remember, the $10 -- the 10 sailors were detained earlier this month when one of the boats broke down and drifted into iranian waters. iran later admitted it was an accident and released the sailors, but not before questioning them. michelle: happening today, it' s not a done deal yet, but governor rick scott will meet with the seminole tribe about a new, $3 billion gambling agreement. it allows the tribe to keep card games at its casinos and to add roulette and craps. the governor plans to discuss job opportunities with the tribe today. state lawmakers still have not signed off on the deal. what a local boy scout troop is doing when they were targeted by thieves. as we had to break, the orlando magic are hoping to keep their momentum going tonight after their first win in eight games. they beat the celtics last night at home 119 to 114. in the day ahead they face the

michelle: as you head out this morning, you will not need a jacket. amy: we are in the 50' s and 60' s right now. about 10 degrees warmer than where we were yesterday, at this time. we are headed into the upper 70' s and lower 80' s today. we will have some more sunshine, and some more -- some warmer temperatures today. the villages and leesburg will check in at -- are checking in at 51 degrees right now. there is some cloud cover to start off. we will begin the day a little gray. maybe even a few sprinkles , not a lot of rain though at this point. as we head into today, we will get some sunshine and begin to climb quickly. i will take you around county by county, to talk about how long we will stay warm, and when some rain and storms will move back in. that is coming up in just a few minutes.

s go over to ted noah with a traffic update. ted: we are looking at our chopper flying over i-4. they are heading to the john river bridge there. overall, it is pre-quiet for your morning drive. the westbound is seeing a little more traffic brown altamonte springs. -- at altamonte springs. eastbound is on the right side of the screen here. this is just east of the turnpike. if you are going to be driving on i-4 eastbound, through downtown orlando, it is really not that bad. you can see from the sensors here, it is looking pretty good. jason: covering seminole county. we' re learning much more about the man charged in a shootout with sanford police. michelle: that shootout friday injured an innocent bystander. jazmin walker is here with the new details in the suspect' s arrest. jazmin: this is roshad smith. he' s waking up in the seminole county jail, after a judge

awhile. sanford police say, smith fired shots at an officer who eyed him, as the man, a 911 caller said, pointed guns at cars along 1792 friday night. in return, the officer shot back. the shootout went around this car dealership. bullets marred the merchandise. smith disappeared. a helicopter' s infared camera and police k-9 unit helped find smith, hiding behind a utility box, wearing just underwear and socks. documents also show smith was out on bond at the time, for eluding an officer with a suspended license, and was convicted in 2008 for culpable negligence in a death case. smith is charged with attempted homicide, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a weapon in public. he isn' t expected to face a judge again on these charges until march 22. jason, back to you. jason: thank you jazmin. an update to a story we brought

a local boy scout troop is raising money to replace equipment thieves stole. the crooks got away with their trailer last week from the parking lot of the all saints lutheran church in south orange county. it was used to store more than $10,000 worth of items. >> that this all happened -- that somebody went and took from the scouts. they took this just for -- i do not know what. profit? they might have thought it was lawn equipment. jason: we have had several phone calls in to our newsroom about how -- asking how people can help. the information on how you can help is posted on wesh.com. michelle: new on sunrise, cuba will soon have more internet access than ever before. overnight a communications company announced it is now allowing cubans to order home internet service. it' s the first step in bringing home access to one of the world' s least connected nations. general public access began last

s adrian whitsett on michelle: amy, it seems like our week is going to be split. it is going to start off warm, and then get a little cold in the later half of the week. amy: jason, you will like the first part. and then people who elect the colder weather elect the second part. i was over at lake mary earlier, it was celebrate literary week in florida. i was visiting some students, and it was a great time. we talked about whether, of course. -- weather, of course. we also spoke about the importance of reading. we had a great time. i also stop by a fifth-grade class two. -- class too. they were also learning about the importance of literacy and

all right, our temperatures will climb today. 72 is our average high temperature at the end of the month. average -- our average high to date will be 76 degrees. down as one of the what is months we have ever had. the spring tornadoes this -- tornado season when i began in the month of february. tomorrow is the anniversary of the groundhog state windows in central -- the groundhog' s day tornadoes in central florida. today, we will have some more sunshine today, compared to yesterday. tomorrow and wednesday, those are the days we will be warm. thursday will bring us some showers and storms. on friday, we are back down in the 60' s for our highs.

clouds are streaming through right now. there been a couple of sprinkles off to the north. no major concerns for rain today. drier air is on its way in. you can see it right here. that is the dry air in the middle part of the atmosphere. that is working its way in, as the moisture makes its way out. that will help us get a little more sunshine today. it will also help the temperatures climb a bit more quickly. we are in the big -- we are in the upper 50' s and lower 60' s to start out this morning. with a ridge of high pressure, some more sunshine, some warm wind, our temperatures will climb to date into the upper 70' s -- will climb today into the upper 70' s and most of our northern spots. mount dora, you are headed to 79. we will hit 82 -- 80 degrees

the farther north, you will be cooler, but not by much. 77 in titusville. 77 at cocoa beach. 77 at palm bay. tomorrow, we will be warm again with some scattered clouds. wednesday will be our last warm day, before a cold front will arrive. late wednesday and overnight into thursday, we will have some showers and storms that move in. the colder air will be behind that front on friday. as you can see here on the seven day forecast. we will stay in the 60' s next weekend. another front will reinforce that cold air. it will come through on saturday. ted? ted: choppers over i-4, heading into orange. there are the dreaded altamonte springs delays right now. you are going to be hitting the brakes there, about three minutes slower than it usually is for the travel time. i-4 eastbound here.

wesh 2, later on in the evening. for now, from des moines, iowa, i am adrian whitsett. michelle: remember, we have an entire section of wesh.com dedicated to commitment 2016. just go to the news tab and click on politics for the newest developments from the campaign trail. jason: a man accused of killing a horse in volusia county goes on trial today. prosecutors say christoper todd intentionally drove into a group of riders in port orange last year injuring one of them the trial begins at a: 30. michelle: ocala police are looking into whether a series of drive-by shootings are connected. they happened at a number of different apartment complexes in the southwest and northeast sides of the city. one of those shootings left one man injured on northwest 16th street saturday. jason: the tourist district in orange county is dealing with a wave of car-breakins. 32 cars were broken into on saturday at several hotels. those include, monumental movieland hotel on i-drive and suites, and the country inn and suites on universal boulevard. the hotels have refused to comment.

working to demolish one of the oldest toll plazas in central florida. starting today, you don' t have to stop at the airport toll booth. the cash will now be collected at four new toll plazas that have been built on nearby beachline ramps.

jason: let' s get you a look at the weather to get you started this morning. amy: drier air is working in this morning. it will mean a cloud cover we are currently seeing will break apart. we should get some more sunshine today. we are are in the upper 60' s and lower 70' s right now. -- upper 50' s and lower sixes right now. we are headed into the mid-to-upper 70' s. even some 80 degree temperatures this afternoon. some more sunshine and a breeze coming in out of the southwest. we will stay warm through wednesday. shower and storms on thursday. colder air on friday. ted: a chopper flying over i-4. they are flying through seminole county. this is just past the fairbanks curve. things are not looking too bad here. never, if you are going to be going to altamonte springs, it is going to be slow.
