villareal and the effort to keep the homeless warm. amy sweezey is tracking how long these temperatures will stick around. and you for joining us this morning. i am michelle imperato area --. jason: i' m jason guy. it is cold. amy: we have a freeze warning in numbers in a second. we are going to climb today. we will get some sunshine that will help our temperatures get to the low to mid 60' s. however, that is not back to normal yet. 73 is our average high. we have to wait to tomorrow to get back to normal. we have an hour to go and once we do get to sunrise, our temperatures will climb. we will make it to 58 by noon today. the freeze warning you saw in effect for more counties today. it includes volusia, northern light, and sumter for another three hours. everybody else that is not officially freezing with the air

alex: iamb amy and i am feeling pretty good out here, it has been interesting. we have had mixed reactions to the temperatures. we talked to new yorkers who said this is nothing. it is cold enough that coalition for the homeless of central florida here in orlando did that means they have opened up to get out of the chill. s men service center takes care of 250 men a day and the center for 240 men women and children. on a cold night, when the temperature dips below 40 degrees, the coalition opens overflow site -- space and everyone is welcome. i talked to a member of the kitchen staff who said they have dozens of extra people there today and they are making more breakfast right now to be able to feed and take care of those people. seminole county emergency officials also opened up more shelter space overnight in seminole county at the rescue outreach mission of central

shelter on standby. in orlando, utilities commission put extra crews on standby and said they are ready to provide extra power for home heating systems during the cold snap. it is a chance -- they are tips to keep you safe. including open your blinds and drapes during the day to lead in the warm sunshine, but at night, close them to keep out the cold air. keep portable heaters if you need them at least three feet away from furniture, bedding, walls, clothing, and anything else flammable. it is cold outside, so remember that when you are stepping out. ted has an information you might need to look out for when you step outside to get in your car. ted: usually, i-4 eastbound or seminole county is quiet, it is westbound that gets slower. i-4 but when you look at the chopper. ultimate hasn' t wrapped up get

the sheriff says the shooter, 68-year-old david evans, took off. he killed another deputy during killed. police have not released a motive. the sheriff says he thinks the because he was in uniform. s son on his estranged father. >> he never talked poorly about cops to me. never had issues in the past with police officers. he just -- i think he just got into, he was a heavy drinker. he had emotional problems and all in all, i think what happened today is a terrible tragedy. brett: one deputy killed was a 30 year veteran of the department, the other had been with the agency for 16 years. a spokesman for the harp -- harvard county -- harford county sheriff says the investigation is ongoing. michelle: this morning, we are

damage this car caused when it slammed into this orange county home. the damage is so bad, the home on rio grande and 19th street has been deemed unsafe to live in. the homeowner says the all situations hard to fathom. >> how far was the car in? >> it went year. michelle: orlando police say the driver of a sedan lost control yesterday afternoon. kinsey' s daughter and -- say they were minutes before -- in the spot minutes before it crashed. >> and you are just in there just before? >> probably about five minutes before the car went through the wall. michelle: the family is now staying at a hotel and we are waiting to hear from police about possible charges for the driver. jason: a brevard county deputy is out on bond this morning, charged with having sex with an inmate.

the stretch from the turnpike to colonial drive is going to cost eight minutes. jason: we are working to find out how an elderly man died after driving into a frigid pond. the crash was reported in groveland, not far from the turnpike. brett connolly joins us now. we understand he made it out of the car alive. brett: the good samaritans that pulled him from the karsay the 73-year-old was talking with them before he suddenly died -- car say the 73-year-old was talking with them before he suddenly died. two good samaritans pull that crash victim from the pond. he was speaking with them but as he was sitting on the ground he fell unconscious and died. this crash remains under investigation. michelle: a former marion county

we showed you this video of jesse terrel punching derek price. price had laid down, appearing to surrender. the other four deputies took plea deals on the charges but terrel is fighting them. a trial scheduled next month. jason: the standoff at an oregon wildlife refuge could come to an end today. the fbi has that refuge surrounded. for protesters hold up inside. the group sees to that refuge over opposing federal land-use policy. cliven bundy was taken into custody. his son, ammon bundy, was leading the protest until his arrest last month. michelle: the man who assassinated robert kennedy will remain behind bars despite help

the decision came from testimony from paul schrade who was injured in the 1968 shooting. schrade claims there was a second shooter who shot the presidential candidate. jason: the nation' s top cop will begin a tour two point out some of the best police departments in the nation. the justice department announced it is suing ferguson, missouri, over civil rights malaysia -- violations. >> loretta lynch will launch a to her that will take her to six cities to highlight police departments she views as role models for law enforcement. this comes after she announced the justice department is suing ferguson missouri after legislators voted against a deal about how police and courts

a complaint accuses the missouri city of routinely violating residents rights and misusing law enforcement to generate revenue. the justice department has been scrutinizing ferguson since michael brown, a black, unarmed 18-year-old was fatally shot by an officer months ago. the unanimously voted against a deal with the justice department saying they couldn' t afford the price tag. jason: people will come together to remember fallen orange county sheriff' s deputy scott time. a candlelight vigil -- scott time -- scott pine. the deputy was shot after confronting car burglary suspects. the gunman later shot and killed himself. his girlfriend is serving 15 years in prison.

36 in sanford and 38 in leesburg. it is not as windy today. the winds are much lighter in a lot of spots. we don' t have to worry about wind chills but we do have the freeze warning for our northern counties. as we climb today we will start to get sunshine and that will will be warmer than yesterday. it is a slow climb. we will be in the lower 60' s before noon and later today we will top out in the mid-60' s. we will talk about when the 70' s make a comeback in just a few minutes. let' s get a traffic update. ted: the chopper is up and flying west through seminole county looking for delays. things are quiet. we are getting a lot easier going into maitland and eastbound on the left side of i-4 and downtown orlando, starting to pick up with the morning congestion.

have a crash on state road 50. it is partially blocking elaine. if you are -- blocking a lane. a little east of the area of the turnpike and downtown orlando, that is john young. you can see a little bit slow as you start to approach through kaylee at 21 miles per hour. only two minutes longer than usual. michelle: we are hearing from a former health worker accused of punching a patient with dementia. jason: the nursing assistant lost her job. this woman is saying it is a misunderstanding. jazmin: she says she was trying to protect this patient who said she was -- he was trying to make the -- escape the facility. >> i was trying to trick him with the towel to see if you could let go of the door and hold on to the towel.

michelle: alonso punched randall ellison and senior who was in a wheelchair eight times. upon learning , our staff reported to local state agencies. the defendant' s son says he did not hear about it. >> the staff did not communicate to me what had happened. that is what disturbed me. jazmin: the victim is being cared for at a veterans facility instead. he is not going to sue but hoped the nursing home employees treat every patient with respect. michelle: and eatonville street could be fixed in hours. jason: public works crews have repaired a water main break.

as we get going today, as soon as we start to get more sun, we will climb and make it back into the low-mid-60' s. we are not back to normal but we will be warmer than yesterday. a lot of us did not make it out of the 60' s but all the sunshine. it has been so blustery in the last couple of days, that cold air has felt colder. today, calm her winds allow our temperature to fly. on sunday, we get another cold front that comes through but it is not as cold or significant as last couple of fronts. this will bring us down to below average. it is 28 degrees in ocala, we dropped to 44 in the villages. leesburg, daytona beach, melbourne all at 38 and

orlando is our warm spot at 40, but we were in the upper 30' s earlier so we have dropped since mid-eight and lined. marion county under the freeze warning. a lot of freezing temperatures, upper 20' s and lower 30' s. flagler county also under the warning although we are not all at freezing. 30 degrees in palm coast. we have got that frost as well and we have a little bit of a wind chill. most of us have calm winds that sanford is one of the spots where that 36 actually feels more like freezing because that breezes in about five miles per hour. we will get lots of sun, so between those things that will allow our temperatures to decline a little more significantly than yesterday. 64 today in eustis. we will top out at 65 in kissimmee, 66 winter haven.
